Director of
Athletics
Yes!
Dear Friends:
As Hudson Valley Community
College observes its 50th
anniversary, we celebrate the
tradition of Hudson Valley athletics and look forward to an
even brighter future. In the
past five years, 11 of our 14
teams have won conference,
regional or national titles.
With the construction of
Joseph L. Bruno Stadium –
clearly the crown jewel of oncampus baseball facilities –
Hudson Valley developed a
new outdoor athletic complex,
unmatched on any two-year
college campus across the
country. We are excited about
our new home and recent success, and I am asking for your
support to ensure that the
future of Hudson Valley athletics will mirror the past.
Your tax-deductible donation
to the Viking Club will directly
impact our 250 student-athletes, assisting with academic
retention initiatives, program
enhancements, community
endeavors, recruiting, and
facility development.
I am sure that you will be
proud of the student-athletes
on our 14 teams. I hope that
we can count on you to be a
member of the 15th team – the
Viking Club.
I want to join Hudson Valley Community College’s
quest for success on the field and in the classroom.

Hudson Valley
Community College
Hudson Valley Community College has
grown significantly since its founding 50
years ago. In addition to the 11,000 credit
and 2,500 non-credit students the college
serves, more than 10,000 individuals benefit each year from the college’s off-campus
programs and training programs, which are
conducted at high schools, businesses and
government agencies.
The college is sponsored by
Rensselaer County and is part of the State
University of New York system. Hudson
Valley Community College offers more than
50 degree and certificate programs through
its four schools: Business; Engineering &
Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences;
and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The college employs 500 full- and
part-time faculty members, and has a
$240 million annual economic impact on
the Capital Region, according to a recent
analysis by the Capital District Regional
Planning Commission.
While 80 percent of Hudson Valley’s
students come from the Capital Region, the
overall student population includes students from nearly all of the counties in New
York State, many other states, and dozens
of foreign countries. The college is ranked
25th nationally in the number of associate
degrees awarded annually, and has more
than 56,000 graduates.
The college is accredited by the
Commission on Higher Education and is a
member of the Middle States Association
of Colleges and Schools. All of Hudson
Valley’s programs are registered and
approved by the New York State
Department of Education with the authority to award associate degrees in arts, science, applied science and occupational
studies, as well as occupation-specific
certificates. In addition, several of the
academic programs are accredited by specialized national professional accrediting
associations, such as the National League
for Nursing, the National Accrediting
Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences
and the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology.
The mission of Hudson Valley
Community College is to offer a wide
range of programs to serve the educational needs of a diverse population. As a fullopportunity college with a strong commitment to teaching and learning, the college
makes it possible for every applicant to
pursue a program of study.
The college’s Associate in Applied
Science (A.A.S) and Associate in
Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) programs
lead to immediate employment in industry,
business, government and health agencies. The college’s Associate in Arts (A.A.)
and Associate in Science (A.S.) programs
lead to transfer opportunities at four-year
colleges and universities. In addition, the
college sponsors a number of certificate
programs that prepare students for selected occupational specialties.
The college, through its Workforce
Development Institute, coordinates training programs and contracts for many area
business and government agencies. The
Office of Continuing Education and
Summer Sessions offers credit-bearing
courses at convenient times and places,
while the Office of Community and
Professional Education offers a wide variety of non-credit and short-term courses
that serve a wide range of community and
professional needs and interests.
The campus provides extensive,
state-of-the-art facilities to support its
academic programs, including the Bulmer
Telecommunications Center, which

Season!
encompasses the latest innovations in
multimedia presentation, videoconferencing, teleconferencing, distance learning,
and instructional technology, and the
McDonough Sports Complex, a 126,000square-foot recreational facility that contains a field house and ice rink.
As a comprehensive, full-service community college, Hudson Valley is committed to meeting the educational and training needs of diverse constituencies.
Within a year of graduation, 91 percent of
Hudson Valley graduates find immediate
employment in their field or successfully
transfer directly to a four-year institution
following graduation.
The college’s academic programs are
designed to be consistent with those
offered by other two-year institutions
within the SUNY system, and they are
designed to promote compatibility and
transferability to four-year institutions.
The college maintains joint admission and
transfer agreements with dozens of fouryear colleges and universities.
Hudson Valley Community College
offers many distinctive programs, including vocational apprenticeship programs, a
liberal arts Honors Program, and unique
health science programs. For example,
Hudson Valley’s Dental Hygiene program
is the only one of its kind within an
approximate 150-mile radius.
The college also provides distinctive
student support services to ensure success, including the Collegiate Academic
Support Program, the Learning Assistance
Center, the Minority Mentoring Program,
the Minority Orientation Program, the
Disability Resource Center, the Peer
Tutoring Program, the Smart Start
Program, and the Viking Child Care Center.
These services are available to all students.

Athletic Facilities
Lady Vikings
Softball
Hudson Valley Community College
boasts some of the finest athletic facilities
found on any two-year college campus in
the country. Among the varsity sports held
on the Troy campus are: men’s and
women’s basketball; ice hockey; football;
women’s cross country; women’s tennis;
men’s and women’s soccer; men’s
lacrosse; and baseball. The college also
hosts physical education classes
and intramural competitions on
its indoor and outdoor facilities.
All of Hudson Valley’s athletic teams enjoy the benefits of
the McDonough Sports Complex,
a 126,000-square-foot recreation
facility that is home to a 4,000seat gymnasium and the first oncampus ice rink at any American
community college. The complex
also has a weight room, indoor
track, racquetball courts and a
fitness room with integrative
adaptive equipment.
The baseball team plays
at the Joseph L. Bruno
Stadium. Built in 2002, “the
Joe” is a 4,500-seat on-campus baseball stadium that
also is home to the New
York-Penn League’s Tri-City
ValleyCats, a Houston
Astros-affiliated Class A
baseball team. The stadium
also houses one of the most complete
exercise physiology labs in the Northeast
and is accessible to physical education
students through classes.
Several other outdoor fields also
were built adjacent to the baseball stadium in 2002. The football, soccer, softball
and tennis teams all have new homes on
the Hudson Valley campus.

Coaches’ Profiles
JEFF BEYER, head coach
Jeff Beyer is in his second season at Hudson Valley. Last
year, he was named the Mountain Valley Conference Coach of
the Year after leading the Lady Vikings to a 29-8 record, a conference title, and a third place finish at the Region III tournament.
Prior to coming to Troy, Coach Beyer spent three years at
Schenectady County Community College, where he took its program from a club team to a Region III tournament berth. In only
its first year of varsity softball in 2002, Coach Beyer led the
Royals to a 14-9 record and a spot in the Region III tournament.
A 1982 graduate of Clemson University, where he played
baseball, Coach Beyer has played and coached with several
fast-pitch men’s leagues in Schenectady for the last 18 years.
Coach Beyer lives with his three children in Scotia.
LYNDA SMITH, assistant coach
Entering her fourth season as an assistant softball coach
at Hudson Valley, Lynda Smith was instrumental in helping to
guide Hudson Valley to a second place finish at the 2002 NJCAA
National championships in Joliet, IL. Coach Smith played varsity
softball, basketball and volleyball at Bethlehem Central High
School before graduating in 1993. She then continued her softball career at The College of Saint Rose, helping the Golden
Knights win two New York Collegiate Athletic Conference
Championships.
Coach Smith also served as an assistant coach on the
Hudson Valley women’s basketball team from 2000 to 2002,
helping guide the Lady Vikings post a 51-9 two-year record. In 2002, Hudson Valley competed at the NJCAA Division III national championship tournament, finishing the season
as the No. 7 team in the country.
Coach Smith majored in communication disorders at The College of Saint Rose and
currently works for the New York State Workers Compensation Board.
JAIME TRUDEAU, assistant coach

Hudson Valley women’s soccer team in 2003. She helped guide
the Lady Vikings to a 10-7 record, their best mark since 1993.
Prior to coming to Hudson Valley, coach Trudeau was an
assistant softball coach at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC,
where she helped lead the Braves to a Dixie Conference championship.

Q & A with Coach Jeff Beyer
What does it take to be a successful student-athlete in the Hudson Valley softball
program?
Participating in athletics can make school more fun. It also can be a good way to relax
and decrease stress. The biggest challenges to the student-athlete are time issues. These
issues arise at the level of daily planning, semester-long planning and even planning for
two years at Hudson Valley. Successful athletes will use the same discipline they use in
their sports to ensure that they use the time available to them, between classes and
before and after practice and competitions, to complete their assignments and prepare
for exams.
What makes Hudson Valley a special place for student-athletes to pursue their degree
and to play softball?
Hudson Valley has shown great attention to the unison of academics and athletics. In
addition to the many courses of study that the athletes can take, Hudson Valley offers the
best athletic facilities around. The campus design and the addition of the new softball
complex have made for a great student-athlete experience.
What is your personal philosophy about coaching?
I begin with emphasis on the need for priorities: family, academics, and athletics. The
tried and tested philosophies, “give 110 percent” and “practice how you expect to play”
are both part of my approach to coaching. I work these into two standard philosophies.
First, I strongly believe in over-preparation for all possible situations. Secondly, as coach,
I take it as my responsibility to foster team chemistry. I present game situations for each
athlete to get to know her own and her teammates’ strengths and weaknesses. With that
knowledge, we can all fit together like a puzzle, with each piece complementing the next.
Dennis P. Fagan
767 Hoosick Road
Troy, New York
12180
www.faganasset.com
What are the team’s goals this season and what does the team need to do to achieve
them?
We actually have a large group of freshmen. Our goal is to use the seniors’ experience as
a tool to mature the freshman by April. We have altered practice a lot from last year’s routine, maximizing time on team drills. We have increased the length of the practice sessions to include weight training in the fitness room. I hope this also will speed up the
maturation of the freshman. The team has lived up to this goal early than I expected.
Our long-range goal will be to learn to use our resources – speed and agility – wisely
enough so that by regionals we can dominate comparably strong teams. We have a leaner
team than last year which will learn to rely on speed more so than last year’s team. It is my
belief that if we achieve this goal, we are going to be strong contenders in postseason
play.

Season Preview
Expectations are high once again for
the Hudson Valley Community College
softball team, and why shouldn’t they be?
The Lady Vikings haven’t had a losing season since 1987 and have won more than
20 games in each of the last three years. A
29-8 record and a third place finish at the
Region III tournament last season came on
the heels of a second place finish at the
NJCAA Division III World Series in 2002.
Another returning player up the middle
is shortstop Lauren Krogh (Troy/Troy High
School). Blessed with good hands in the
field, she also hit .293 with three doubles.
Meg McLoughlin (Troy/Troy High
School) led the team with a .447 average
a year ago and is expected to provide a
veteran presence in the outfield. Also
returning is Lindsay Frament
(Waterford/Catholic Central High School),
who hit .333 in 18 at bats last season.
Hudson Valley, the defending
Mountain Valley Conference champions, is
ranked No. 3 in the preseason NJCAA
Division III poll. However, Coach Jeff
Beyer, in his second year, knows that it’s
where you finish and not where you start.
Beyer, who was named the Mountain
Valley Conference Coach of the Year last
season, did not have to travel very far to
find his players. All 15 Lady Vikings are
from Section II schools. Eleven of them
are from Rensselaer County.
“It is nice to be recognized by your
peers as one of the nation’s top teams,
but we’re still really young,” Beyer said.
“The talent is here for us to have a good
team, but it is going to take a lot of hard
work, dedication and teamwork.”
The schedule is challenging once
again. The Lady Vikings will meet each of
the teams that advanced to last year’s
Region III semifinals-Monroe Community
College, Broome Community College and
Corning Community College. Hudson Valley
opens its season against Illinois’ College of
DuPage, last year’s national runner-up.
Even though the Lady Vikings are
young, they do return standout players at
key positions. On the mound, Stephanie
Goodspeed (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh
High School) and Samantha Zotto
(Troy/Troy High School) combined to go
16-5 last season. Goodspeed, who should
return as the team’s ace this year, was 7-4
with a 2.45 ERA. She fanned 78 batters in
80 innings pitched. Zotto was 9-1 with a
1.98 ERA.
