But in the last couple of decades, these attractions have expanded dramatically with newly-themed areas designed to keep visitors around a lot longer. Last month, there was a range of new openings and announcements that offer more reasons for clients to head back to Orlando or southern California. But now Disneyland Park features the brand new live show Mickey and the Magical Map, and the Disney Princess venue, Fantasy Faire. Meanwhile over at Universal Orlando Resort, Springfield, hometown to America’s favourite animated family, The Simpsons, comes to life this summer. The expansive, new area within Universal Studios will be anchored by the mega-attraction, The Simpsons Ride. Universal Orlando Resort and Warner Bros. Entertainment have also announced an expansion of historic proportion with the entirely new themed environment — The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley. Scheduled to open in 2014, the world’s first centrally themed, multi-park experience expands The Wizarding World of Harry Potter across both Universal Orlando theme parks and allows Universal’s creative team to bring an unparalleled vision to this unique project. Universal Orlando is also poised to open its new mega-attraction, TRANSFORMERS: The Ride — 3D, which will open on June 20 — bringing the intergalactic battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons to Universal Studios Florida. IATA members reaffirm support for NDC initiative, saying it provides better comparison shopping; richer content for agents CAPE TOWN — The International Air Transport Association (IATA) 69th Annual General Meeting (AGM) has reaffirmed its support for the New Distribution Capability (NDC) initiative. tent and the ability to compare and transact airline offers in a transparent fashion.” Consumers already have the ability to view rich content when they visit many airline websites, including bundled and no frills fare offers and personalization, as well as the ability to see graphic depictions of products and services available for sale, said IATA. “In most cases, however, travel agents do not have access to the same information and services through their systems. The XML-based NDC standard will close this merchandizing gap, providing consumers with the same shopping experience regardless of how and where they do their travel shopping. “Consumers want to be able to buy air travel products in the same way that they purchase other goods, with full access to product information, the ability to comparison-shop and to see the full value of the offer. And we want sumers to compare base fares and to do so without identifying themselves (‘anonymous shopping’). The AGM Resolution also noted that consumers will be protected by data privacy protection laws and regulations regardless of how and where they choose to purchase air travel. Additionally, members confirmed that airlines and other industry players will be free to decide whether or not to adopt NDC to support some or all of their distribution needs, and that IATA would continue to support PUERTO PLATA TORONTO DEPARTURES . Tyler noted that NDC faces some opposition for incumbent interests. “Frankly, some of our opponents are not telling the truth. Let me clear the air with some facts. All were in attendance at John Fluevog Shoes in downtown Toronto recently to catch a sneak peek of Air Canada rouge’s brand new inflight uniform. Flights have been on sale since December 2012 and according to Michael Friisdahl, Air Canada rouge President and Chief Executive Officer, “sales have been very, very strong.” All aircraft are currently in the process of being painted and fitted with newly designed interiors, and a total of 150 flight attendants have already been hired. Both youthful and casual, male and female uniforms now include burgundy knit sweater sets, scarves, bright headbands, lightweight wool trousers, stylish plaid ties, streetstyle hats and fashionable shoes designed by famed Canadian shoe designer John Fluevog. In addition, pilots will sport specially designed pilot wings featuring the company’s ‘r’ favicon. All designs were modelled down a runway by actual flight attendants in training, with Beker providing fashion commentary from start to finish. “One thing you will notice is the ab- sence of the jacket,” said Renee SmithValade, Vice President, Customer Experience. “Typically, the jacket is the one authority piece in a wardrobe, but we really wanted to loosen the knot on the tie, roll up our sleeves and go for a more casual feel.” In addition to fancy new threads, Air Canada rouge has implemented new inflight training after partnering with the Disney Institute in Florida. Flight attendants will receive customized service excellence training at the Institute in addition to safety and regulatory training from Air Canada at its Toronto and Montreal training centres. “Disney really stood out to us, they had an approach that we really liked,” added Smith-Valade. “They talked about creating a whole corporate culture surrounding Air Canada rouge and not just about front-line training.” Friisdahl also added: “We’re investing in the Disney Institute’s service excellence training to ensure our customers’ vacations truly start when they board our aircraft. TRANSFORMERS: The Ride 3D is a mind-blowing, action packed experience that pushes the limits of technology so riders will be placed in the middle of an epic battle between Autobots and the Decepticons. The battle begins when guests enter the headquarters for the government operation that partners with Autobots to protect the world from the Decepticons. While inside, guests are recruited to help protect the AllSpark, a powerful energy source that would allow the Decepticons to destroy Earth. “The ride envelops the audience and makes them feel like they’re in the world of Transformers, that they’re in the midst of the robots. I wish we could do this with the movies,” said Spotlight_June06_SummerAttractions.indd 11 Michael Bay, an American film director and producer. Recruits can create their own NEST identification, train for battle and gain access to exclusive photos and videos. Alberta offers summer travellers dramatic landscapes Only Alberta can offer travellers the great Canadian outdoor experience complete with soaring mountains, shimmering lakes and wandering wildlife, and GOGO Worldwide Vacations has it. Canada’s first National Park, in Banff, has incomparable beauty with a wide range of activities for travellers to partake in. Visitors to Banff National Park can set up camp and spend their days swimming or gliding across the smooth surface of the water in a canoe. Hiking along the park’s trails offer close experiences with the birds and other wildlife. A local must see is the “Castle in the Rockies,” Fairmont Banff Springs, which is rich with history. Lake Louise, located 45 minutes from the town of Banff, is a memorable day trip, home to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Jasper National Park is Canada’s largest Rocky Mountain park. With its soaring peaks, beautiful waterfalls and historic glaciers, the national park is home to National Aboriginal Day. This festival is a substantial cultural crossroads for a diversity of Aboriginal groups. Travellers can experience Aboriginal culture at its finest and sample bannock and bush tea. The top five summer activities Jasper offers travellers are camping, wildlife watching, hiking among the many trails throughout the park, scenic journeys and the chance to experience mountain life. Jasper National Park is the gentle giant of the Rockies. For clients looking for a more urban feel to their summer travel plans, Alberta offers that too. Spotlight_June06_SummerAttractions.indd 13 2013-06-03 12:00 PM SPOTLIGHT SPOTLIGHT NAME Photo courtesy of Holland America Line SPOTLIGHT CRUISING The Crow’s Nest on Holland America Line’s Veendam Holland America Line cruise puts Antarctica’s icy beauty in full view by TIN Thomas ANTARCTIC PENINSULA — We had expected plenty of snow, ice, glaciers … and they were there in profusion. But the lasting impression we returned home with after our cruise to Antarctica on Holland America’s 1,226-passenger Veendam was the immensity of the towering mountain ranges on the Antarctic Peninsula, far higher than we had expected, white-clad, cloud-tipped and creating a breathtaking panorama of desolate beauty. Only around 40,000 people a year get to visit the huge, frozen continent, repository of all but a fraction of the world’s permanent ice and snow. Fewer still get to walk on the surface of a land so remote and so far removed from anything else that even the most experienced traveller will experience. And it’s the experience of a lifetime. Because of tight restrictions imposed by international treaty, few large, mainline cruise ships such as Veendam sail this far south and those Spotlight_June06_Cruising.indd 14 that do have nowhere to dock and put their passengers ashore. Even the smaller ships that tender passengers ashore can only land 100 passengers at any one time, according to the Berlitz Cruise & Cruise Ships, Bible to the cruise industry. Potential visitors must make their decision: if a landing is important to them, book passage on what the industry terms an ‘expedition ship’ or trade that for the greatly expanded facilities and lifestyle of ships like Veendam, which provide an mind-expanding experience of their own. Not all ships permit their passengers ashore. Not all ships go deep into Antarctica. A ship like Veendam provides more comfort in crossing the notoriously rough Southern Ocean via the Drake Channel from the tip of South America, onboard facilities are much more expansive and they also give opportunities to visit many fascinating South American ports of call with their usual routing from west-coast Valparaiso in Chile right around the southern tip to Buenos Aires in east coast Argentina... or vice versa. Cruising south on the Pacific and enjoying the ship’s broad program of activities we arrived at Puerto Montt at the north of the lovely Chilean fjords and then Castro, capital of the Chiloe Islands, first settled by the Spaniards in 1567. The main island is largely national parkland and the city, filled with treasures from early Spanish settlement, contains unique palafitos, houses built on stilts, many of them converted to craft shops, restaurants and even hotels. Puerto Chacabuco, our next port of call, reached by a voyage up an inland waterway, is the gateway to some magnificent country and to Coyhaique, largest town in the region with the peaks and glacier-filled mountains of the Andes in its background. Two days later we sailed into the famed Magellan Strait that separates the mainland from the large island 2013-06-03 11:08 AM ;0*6 >LY[OLPT*V\Y[ 9PJOTVUK/PSS65 3UHDQG3RVW&UXLVH(XURSH 790=(;,;9(5:-,9:(**6446+(;065;6<9: 'D\V IURP *(+77+)36** ,UOHUJL`V\YJSPLU[Z»JY\PZL^P[OHM\SS`J\Z[VTPaLKP[PULYHY` (]HPSHISLMYVTHU`JP[`PU,\YVWLVY3H[PU(TLYPJH (SSWYP]H[L[YHUZMLYZHUKJP[`[V\YPUJS\KLK ;^VUPNO[ZHJJVTTVKH[PVUH[HUKZ[HYWYVWLY[PLZ *VU[PULU[HSIYLHRMHZ[KHPS` (KKVU[V\YZPUJS\KL^PULY`]PZP[ZJVVRPUNJSHZZLZHUKTVYL -VYJVTWSL[LWYPJPUN]PZP[V\Y^LIZP[LVYJHSS\Z[VKH`:\IQLJ[[VH]HPSHIPSP[`H[[PTLVMIVVRPUN0UJS\KLZOV[LS[H_LZHUKZLY]PJL JOHYNLZ0U[LYUH[PVUHSHPYMHYLNYH[\P[PLZP[LTZVMHWLYZVUHSUH[\YL56;PUJS\KLK *VU[HJ[V\Y:WLJPHSPZ[Z;VKH` of Tierra del Fuego in the south and reached Punta Arenas, main town of a sheep-farming region on the Chilean mainland’s deep south. This is the base for visiting Chile’s most spectacular region, the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, an amazing UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with waterfalls, glaciers, dense forests and dramatic granite pillars that soar up to 8.500-ft. The highlight short excursion of the cruise for us was a ferry ride to Isla Maddelena, some 30 miles away, to visit the enormous colony of penguins there, a marvelous opportunity to get close to and observe these remarkable and fascinating birds. Estimates of their number range from 150,000 to 180,000 at any one time. After sailing through Chile’s fascinating Glacier Alley we reached Ushuaia, the world’s most southerly city, a pleasant place with interesting museums and good souvenir shopping and where an interesting shore excursion is a ride into the Tierra del Fuego National Park on the narrow gauge Train at the End of the World. It was thrilling next day to see, from the ship, infamous Cape Horn once the main route to the Far East and Australia from the east coast of America. It was our last sight of land until we had crossed the Southern Ocean and reached Antarctica at the Palmer Archipelago, site of the first of many re- Australia & Fiji search stations manned by various nations, this one operated by the United States. A group of scientists from the station boarded our ship and briefed passengers on the work being carried out, mainly marine biological research and the monitoring of various global conditions. This was the start of four days sailing among the icebergs and along the stunning coastlines, past Deception Island with hot cider served on the open decks to warm the resolute passengers who viewed the astonishing scenery in the open air. During time spent sailing off the frozen continent, the ship’s Arctic Expedition Team and guide Benjamin manned the Antarctic Base Camp in the Crow’s Nest lounge with maps and books for passengers to refer their questions to. The captain kept his passengers well informed with an excellent commentary on our route. Lectures on Antarctica and its exploration were held frequently in the ship’s Showroom with speakers expert in polar lore. There were also frequent showings of documentary-style films on the region. From that point on the rest of the trip was somewhat of an anti-climax with time at sea broken up with a stop at Puerto Madryn, the port of Chubut Province, which Welsh immigrants NH[L^H`ZPU[LYUH[PVUHSJVT first settled in 1865. It’s an attractive little town with a fine seaside promenade from which sea lions and whales can often be seen. Shore trips took passengers to a breeding ground for sea lions nearby and other wildlife including sea elephants can be seen in the region along with a colony of half a million penguins in a hillside sanctuary at Punta Tombo, which passengers can also visit. A final day at sea was followed by a last day among the many museums and government buildings of Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, on the north shore of the wide mouth of the River Plate and then on the 20th day of the cruise, Veendam crossed the river to elegant Buenos Aires, pride and joy of Argentina and the last stop on a memorable trip. Holland America’s Veendam is a comfortable way to see the Antarctic VALPARAISO, Chile — She may not be the newest or glitziest ship in the fleet but Holland America’s Veendam is unquestionably one of the most comfortable ways to visit one of the most uncomfortable and inhospitable regions on earth — the Antarctic continent. A traditional, relaxing cruise experience, in other words. Veendam entered service in 1996 but the line’s fleet refurbishment program has maintained consistently high standards and a US$40 million renovation three years ago added several new features including more entertainment, food service in the aft pool area, and more accommodation (capacity was increased up to 1,350 passengers from 1,266) that includes two new types — lanai cabins and spa staterooms. Our stateroom was cosy and nicely furnished with all the necessities for sleeping and relaxing, and the alternative dining facilities were top class, especially the sophisticated Pinnacle Grill, which seats only about 60 and offers an elegant well-presented finedining experience. Service in the restaurants and elsewhere about the ship was polished and friendly. One of the most appealing newer features added during the refurbishment was The Retreat, in effect a brand new deck added to the aft part of the ship. Here passengers can relax in the sun on comfortable chaise lounges — there are even some located in a 4-inch deep pool allowing their occupants to dip in their toes and cool their feet — or even watch movies on a open-air large screen. The public areas inside the vessel have, in common with all Holland America’s ships, a classy feel about them. The cruise line pumps literally millions of dollars into all its vessels in the form of antiques and works of art ranging from paintings and sculptures to memorabilia recalling the great days of Holland’s maritime history in the form of 18th and 19th century detailed models of ancient fully rigged sailing ships. Veendam even has an elaborate 17th century iron strongbox and a 17th century bronze cannon from an old Dutch man-o-war. Cruisers will also enjoy one unique feature introduced to its ships by Holland America and present here — the Culinary Arts Centre. This is a large demonstration kitchen in a room fitted out theatre-style with leather seats so that passengers can watch the ship’s top chefs create various culinary masterpieces. For those careful of their physical well being, the ship has an superblyequipped fitness centre and spa. Veendam will be making a series of Eastern Seaboard cruises from Quebec this summer. The 10-day event includes several nightclub events, a Human Rights and Education discussion and a block party. But the most anticipated part of the event is the Pride Parade and Festival. Massachusetts Youth Pride, which took place on May 18, is a one-day annual festival dedicated to celebrating LGBT youth throughout the state. These two events are just the beginning of a busy Pride season for Massachusetts, which was the first state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004. LGBT Pride has become a major tourist attraction and brings in travellers from across North America. Pride celebrations aren’t just limited to Boston. Provincetown is also another LGBT destination, home to two important Pride events. Provincetown Family Pride Week, which runs from Aug. 3 to Aug. 10, brings LGBT parents, children and their families together to celebrate with singing, dancing, games and great conversation. Carnival 2013 is Provincetown’s second major Pride event. Opening on Aug.18 patrons can enjoy boat cruises and pool parties. This year’s theme is Viva Las Vegas. An overview of what’s covered under the travel insurance policy is a great place. For example, with trip cancellation benefits, you’ll want to give an overview of the ‘covered reasons’ for cancelling. Trip cancellation policies cover many of the most common reasons for cancelling, but even ‘cancel for any reason’ policies don’t provide reimbursement for every possible cancellation reason. Nonetheless, the list of covered reasons is a great selling point because it can serve as a reminder that without insurance, certain events that are beyond your client’s control can mean unexpected financial losses. It’s also wise to point out some of the exclusions within the policy, especially the pre-existing conditions clause. Almost all travel insurance policies include this clause, which basically states that expenses that arise due to ‘pre-existing’ medical condition will not be covered. What constitutes ‘pre-existing’ varies from policy to policy so the clause is best read in detail by the customer, who obviously knows their own medical history better than anyone. Another item to highlight is the need to contact the travel insurance provider before seeking medical treatment abroad. This is an important call because it can not only be an opportunity to verify the insurance coverage but the insurance company can also recommend a medical facility that is appropriate for the situation. In addition, many policies state that if a customer doesn’t call in advance of seeking treatment, the amount of coverage they have may be reduced. You may also want to review specific elements of the travel insurance policy that are more likely to affect the customer. For example, some policies have exclusions pertaining to organized sports and activities like bungee jumping. You can review relevant exclusions such as these if you’re dealing with an adventurous traveller, for example. This type of personalized caution isn’t available to customers who book travel online. q&a I had a client who said he didn’t bother with insurance when driving to the U.S. for the day. When asked what if he had a car accident, he said that his car insurance would cover his medical expenses. Is this true? Dennis Runge A common mistake for travellers is making assumptions about what level of medical coverage their auto insurance, credit card or employee travel benefits include. If a customer believes their auto insurance provides the coverage they need, stress the importance of obtaining a copy of their auto insurance policy and reviewing it with their insurance provider to confirm the specifics of out-of-country medical coverage. Does the policy explicitly state that out-of-country medical expenses are covered? What are the conditions and exclusions? Any day and dollar limits? What medical services are included? Does the client have to pay and file for expenses incurred? Remind them that with travel insurance, they not only have coverage for unforeseen medical expenses but also receive extensive medical support and assistance. This includes medical evacuation and repatriation (by ground or air), if required. Most importantly, medical emergencies are not restricted to car accidents. They can happen anytime, anywhere, regardless if they are on a day or week-long trip. Stumped on a question? Here’s your chance to ask the experts! A recent media event at the Anaheim resort showcased both Mickey and the Magical Map (in the newly refurbished Fantasyland Theatre) and Fantasy Faire. The trip coincided with Disney’s ‘24-Hour All-Nighter’ event over Memorial Day weekend. Now open with five shows daily for the summer, Mickey and the Magical Map follows Mickey Mouse as he ‘charts’ his quest to become a mapmaker, in his timeless role (most famously in 1940’s Fantasia) as a sorcerer’s apprentice. Mickey appears both as a live character and as an animation in the show, and a couple of times he goes from one to the other in a blink of an eye. The magic happens fast, it’s that good. Scenes with Mickey are interspersed with live song and dance numbers from some of Disney’s most popular movies. There was Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from Tangled singing ‘I See the Light’, Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog singing ‘Dig a Little Deeper’ and Sebastian from The Little Mermaid singing ‘Under the Sea’, with the added effect of tiny bubbles that floated down onto the audience, to the delight of both the adults and kids. Mickey and the Magical Map is being presented at Fantasyland Theatre, near the It’s a Small World attraction and close to the entrance for Mickey’s Toontown. Fantasyland Theatre is not a new venue. First opened in the mid-1980s as a dance location called Videopolis, it also hosted a run of stage productions from Mickey’s Nutcracker to Beauty and the Beast. It got its current name in 1995 and most recently served as a meet and greet area for guests keen on meeting the Disney Princess characters. Now of course the Princesses have a new venue, Fantasy Faire, where they can interact with their biggest (or littlest) fans. Fantasy Faire is a new-build storybook village near Sleeping Beauty Castle, with a Royal Hall and two Princess-themed shows, telling the tale of Rapunzel from Tangled, and Belle from Beauty and the Beast. The venue blends seamlessly with its surroundings. “It looks like it’s been there since we opened the park. That’s one of the things we do best,” said Colglazier. The new attractions generated buzz on what was already a big weekend for Disney. Both the Anaheim parks as well as the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando took part in the 24-Hour All-Nighter, from 6 a.m. May 24 to 6 a.m. May 25, celebrating Memorial Day weekend and kicking off a ‘Monstrous Summer’ (‘Monsters University’, the Disney-Pixar follow up to Monsters, Inc., opens in theatres this summer). Loyal Disney fans started lining up at Disneyland at 5:30 p.m. on May 23 — yes, more than 12 hours in advance of the 24-hour marathon event — and one couple in line was marking their 510th consecutive day at the parks. The parks were particularly busy, especially with the influx of cel- ebratory high school and university grads, but considering the incredible staffing logistics and crowd-control that must have been involved, the event went smoothly. Who would expect anything less from Disney? For more details see disneytravel agents.ca. New Expression: Avalon Waterways unveils its fifth Panorama-Class ship By Tim Johnson KOBLENZ, Germany — There are few greater pleasures than seeing the world from the water, and there are even fewer worlds as lovely as the Rhine or the Danube, two of Europe’s greatest and most beautiful rivers. Fortunately, the recent explosion in river cruising has facilitated much enjoyment and exploration. This form of cruising barely existed before completion of the Main-Danube Canal in 1992, which opened up a vast network of Eastern and Western European waterways, and the industry has grown more than 50% in just the last five years. And Avalon Waterways has added another great reason to get out on the rivers, adding the brand-new Expression to the company’s already-impressive fleet of luxury river ships. Avalon’s fleet ply the waters of Europe, China, Cologne Cathedral and Hohenzollern Bridge, Germany 24 Travelweek June 6, 2013 june6.indd 24 13-06-03 12:26 PM Egypt and the Galapagos, and the company has carved out a top spot amongst the world’s best small ship cruise lines, winning high honours from cruise critics and publications like Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler. This, the fifth in Avalon’s Panorama Class of vessels, is one of the line’s ‘Suite Ships’, with 80% of staterooms qualifying as suites, and measuring 200 square feet or larger (30% larger than the industry standard). Each suite includes wall-to-wall parnoramic windows and a lovely balance of indoor and outdoor space, boasting Avalon’s unique Open-Air Balconies, which feature a spacious seating area and a glass door that opens a full seven feet. Public areas are spacious and stylish, with four separate lounges for alternative dining (or drinks), plus a Sky Deck with premium lounge chairs, a whirlpool and shade awnings. WiFi is offered on a complimentary basis throughout the ship. And, like all Avalon ships, the Expression includes an impressive tour schedule, with daily excursions into a wide variety of ports-of-call. On the Expression’s recent christening cruise, all of these impressive attributes were on display. Carrying a select group of journalists, travel agents and other industry professionals from the Main River in Frankfurt, down the Rhine to Amsterdam, the actual christening took place in Koblenz, a bustling German city set on the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle. Each of Avalon’s ships has been launched by a godmother — a naval tradition that dates back centuries — and the Expression’s godmother, Patricia Schultz, was on hand to smash the bottle and christen the vessel. Schultz, author of the mega-popular 1000 Places to See Before You Die, notes that she was mostly excited (and honoured), but concedes: “I was a bit nervous, yes, although I probably would’ve been okay if people hadn’t told me about other christenings that didn’t go well,” she laughs. Fortunately, all went well; the bottle was raised via a small pulley, and Schultz clipped the string, successfully swinging and smashing the bottle on the bow. And beyond the formalities, the journey demonstrated for all of those on board the many reasons why river cruising has become so popular. The cuisine, both in the main dining room and as part of Avalon’s new Panorama Bistro — a casual, lighter-dining program that features a variety of tapas dishes — was both delicious and fresh, something that executive Michael Baptiste says he and his fellow chefs take great pains to provide. Menus are planned to reflect the culture and cuisine of the ship’s current location, and the vast majority of ingredients are sourced all along the way, says Baptiste, who has worked in Michelin-starred kitchens and top hotel restaurants all over the world. He adds, “We order from suppliers along the rivers, and I get up early S A N D A L S M O D U L E 55:: SELLING SANDALS! During one particularly scenic portion of the German Rhine, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, fairytale castles climbed the green hills around every curve of the river, moving left to right across my giant, open stateroom window like images on a movie screen, making it feel as if we’d sailed into the setting for a particularly whimsical, beautiful fantasy film. At Cochem, a lovely place that straddles the banks of the Moselle, we toured a castle that dates back to 1050 and clings to a cliff top, looming 230 feet above the winding lanes of the medieval town below. And in Cologne, we took in the city’s famous, and startlingly huge, cathedral — one of Europe’s greatest. Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin now open at SeaWorld Orlando ORLANDO — SeaWorld Orlando’s all-new attraction, Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, is now open. The attraction immerses guests into the chilling continent few will ever experience. Antarctica is a realm in SeaWorld where icebergs, snowcaps and howling winds greet guests. They’ll also meet a very special penguin named Puck, and it’s through his eyes that guests learn about penguin life and the dangers and beauty of this frozen land. On board a first-of-its-kind trackless, all-family adventure ride, guests become one with the storyline as they follow Puck’s adventures. Each mobile simulator ride car allows guests to choose one of two levels of exploration — Wild Expedition or Mild Expedition — for various degrees of ride intensity. Designers say each version has multiple variations for a feeling of unpredictability, just like the continent of Antarctica. “When our little hero penguin learns to waddle and slide, we’ll feel what it’s like as the car moves and reacts to the storyline. When he takes his first swim or barely escapes danger, our guests will feel as if they’re right there with him,” said Brian Morrow, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment creative director. There’s one more family SeaWorld guests can join at Antarctica … and that’s a huge family of nearly 250 penguins. Stepping off the adventure ride, guests find themselves among a colony of Adelie, gentoo, king and rockhopper penguins in a 30-degree habitat filled with wind, snow, rock 26 Travelweek June 6, 2013 june6.indd 26 13-06-03 12:27 PM and chilly water. It’s what makes Antarctica the coldest theme park attraction in Orlando. New technologies combine to create a freezing — but dry — climate, allowing guests to spend time in the penguins’ world. These initiatives include fams arriving from the key markets of Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes, a new ‘Meet the Orange’ marketing campaign scheduled to launch in July, and a ‘Memories & Dreams’ social media contest in August. More importantly, Bensmail wants to get the word out that “even though we are a small destination compared to our neighbours, we have all the same things and more — we have our own personal identity.” He went on to highlight Kissimmee’s ‘small-town’ feel, which gives visitors the unique opportunity to “live like a local”, as well as its many outdoor activities including hiking, biking, kayaking, ziplining, fresh water fishing and more. Plus, being situated so close to the Orlando airport and its theme parks makes it an ideal — and Simon Bensmail from Experience Kissimmee arrives in Toronto to share what’s new about the destination. more affordable — alternative to staying in neighbouring Orlando.
