A regular meeting of the Bay Forest Community Association (BFCA) Board of Directors
was convened on June 18, 2012, at the Clear Lake Presbyterian Church. Board members
in attendance were Gene Fisseler, Dennis Fouty, Dan Pias and Barbara McCollum.
Bryan Wangsgaard, legal counsel, was also present. Discussion was focused on activities
associated with our transition to a self-managed community.
A regular meeting of the Bay Forest Community Association (BFCA) Board of Directors

in attendance were Dennis Fouty, Dan Pias, Barbara McCollum and John Hass. Bryan

Tennis Town Hall
More than a dozen Bay Forest residents participated in the July 2 Tennis Town Hall,
representing league players, potential league players, non-league players, interested
parties and the board of directors. For more than an hour, we worked through a series of
slides that summarized our court hours of operation, our 'first come, first served' policy,
our leagues and the operational policies, court maintenance and repairs, and other topics
of interest.

A series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) have been posted
at www.bayforest.info under the Feedback tab. These FAQs
summarize the Town Hall discussion and are intended to serve as
a reference for residents regarding “all things Bay Forest tennis.”
Dog Attack in Bay Forest
On July 10, two Bay Forest residents and their pet were attacked
by a loose pit bulldog. All three suffered wounds that included
punctures, scratches and scrapes. An ambulance and police officer
responded to the situation. A police report was filed, the dog was
restrained, and the owners, other Bay Forest residents, were issued
a citation for failure to control the animal. The pit bulldog will
spend ten days in quarantine for observation while the victims of
the attack recover, waiting to learn if they must undergo treatment
for rabies. This event demonstrates the importance of keeping pets
in fenced backyards or on leashes at all times.
Community Management Model Changes
In June, BFCA made a change to its management model. The
homeowner satisfaction scores for the community management
company who served Bay Forest have regularly tracked lower than
those of our other service providers. However, despite changing
management companies several times over the past decade, we’ve
come to realize that you (and we) have greater expectations than
the local community management market can deliver.
Consequently, we terminated our community management contract
and have elected not to hire another community management
company. Instead we will hire a part-time employee to be our
community manager – in other words, we will be self-managed.
To make this work, we are committed to developing a management
function within the community. We are performing the necessary
community management functions while we get our hands around
the scope of work and the number of hours per week required
for the new manager to do the job. As we work through this,
many of you may hear from us to better understand homeowner
expectations and to advise you of changes you can expect.
In addition to having our community manager handle all
the “management” functions, we plan to incorporate light
maintenance into the job description. We expect this to be a great
way to get work accomplished more quickly and at a lower cost.
It is our goal that you will find an improved level of management
service delivered in our community. For example, petty and/or
vague deed restriction violation notifications will be eliminated.
You’ll no longer find your community manager to be distant and
impersonal – rather, you’ll find the community manager right
here in our neighborhood.
Many of you regularly reach out to us with your good thoughts,
support, input, questions, and suggestions. We hope that continues
– and increases!

Welcome Home Don Pettit!
Friends and neighbors in Bay Forest came to welcome back
a real "down-to-earth" friend and neighbor - Don Pettit! Don
actually came down to earth (Kazakhstan, specifically) on July 1
after spending 193 days in space. During his mission with Space
Station Expedition 30/31, Don passed by Bay Forest and the rest
of the planet 3,088 times, travelling more than 76 million miles.
The "launch" of this party took place on Saturday, July 21st at the
Bay Forest Pool. Friends and neighbors came to visit with Don
and his family and welcome him back to his "Bay Forest family."
There was pizza, cookie cake, snow-cones and lemonade to enjoy.

Remembering Dennis Johnson
May 2, 1956 – July 4, 2012
We will be doing a Memory Page on Dennis in the September
issue of the Bay Forest News. If you would like to share your
memories of Dennis, please email your thought to me at
mgmoran@swbell.net.
I thought you would like to “remember” how Dennis has been
part of our lives and of the fiber of Bay Forest and the Bay Forest
News from the beginning.
Many of us Bay Forest residents have lots of good memories of
Dennis and can reflect on how he played a part in shaping our lives.

His life was definitely one of those lives that “made a difference!”
Here are a few of my memories of Dennis:
When Bay Forest was brand new and there were less than 100
homes here, the Bay Forest Community Association was made
up mostly of Friendswood Development Company employees. In
order to represent the interests of the people of Bay Forest, the
Bay Forest Civic Association was formed. Dennis was one of the
original Civic Association’s Board of Directors.
In addition, when the Bay Forest News became Incorporated,
Dennis was the Director and the Vice President of the Bay Forest
News. When the paper began, it was just a double-sided one page
paper that we handed out to our neighbors. That is how the Block
Captain system developed. When the paper was still small and the
number of homes had not grown too large, Dennis would copy
the paper for us, for distribution. He was always there finding a
way to get things done.
Dennis had a talent of figuring out the best way of getting from
point A to point B. He was always thinking ahead and always
thinking of ways to make things better and to make things
happen. His energy and enthusiasm were contagious!
All of the Moran Family will miss Dennis very much, but we
know that his contributions to Bay Forest and the Bay Forest
News will live on for a long time!

“Who cares about getting a doctorate? I just won
Yard of the Month!” Barbara Tackaberry
I don't know about you, but I feel like we've been under water
for most of the last month. While I might be sick of the rain,
our Yards are loving it. My goodness we have some lush,
beautiful, yards in Bay Forest! It was very difficult for our
Yard of the Month committee to select just one from each side.
Congratulations to Barbara and Steve Tackaberry of 2106 Purple
Plum Lane on the North Side, and to Linda and Joe Costanza on
the South. Your homes consistently exemplify the beauty of Bay
Forest. Thank you for all the hard work and effort you put into
designing and maintaining your beautiful yards.

2207 Town Oaks is a beautiful example of Southern grace and
charm. The two Live Oaks in the front yard provide a tremendous
amount of shade, but the Costanza's have made it work for them.
They use the symmetry of the house and the trees to sculpt a
dramatic, formal front walkway. When lined by dense shrubs, the
wide front walkway becomes an elegant avenue. The cool shade
is highlighted by soft grass, and pale impatiens and hostas which
line the walkway and surround the trees and house.

Mushroom Circle or
“Fairy Rings”
With over seven inches of rain from July 8-18, mushroom rings
started to pop up all over Bay Forest. This picture was taken at the
Bay Forest Pool Park.
Some types of mushrooms can be frequently found growing in
circles, which are commonly known as "fairy rings." Mushrooms
are the fruiting part of the fungus, which actually grows
underground and is called the mycelium.

Which Mushrooms Grow in Rings?
Marasmius oreades frequently grows in rings, and is commonly
called the fairy ring mushroom. It is an edible mushroom. Other
mushrooms that grow in rings are Chlorophyllum molybdites
(chloro means "green") and Agaricus campestris, the meadow
mushroom.
Folklore
Fairy rings were thought to be caused by fairies who danced the
night away. When they became tired and wanted a place to rest,
they went to the fairy king and asked for something to sit on, and
he gave them mushrooms for seats.
Fairy rings also occupy a prominent place in European folklore as
the location of gateways into elfin kingdoms, or places where elves
gather and dance. According to the folklore, a fairy ring appears
when a fairy, pixie, or elf appears. It will disappear without trace
in less than five days, but if an observer waits for the elf to return
to the ring, he or she may be able to capture it.

Mushroom Mania: July 27, 2012
One issue I didn't cover in last week's email tip about all the recent
rain, was the resulting onslaught of mushrooms.
It was an amazing crop, brought on by the perfect witch's brew of
warm temperatures, summer fertilization and excessive moisture.
I have been swamped with emails on the subject, and prople
(many in a panic) want to know how to control them. The answer
to the question is - DON'T! Thank you for your time, drive safely,
and have a great weekend!
Okay, I'll give you more information, but you really don't have to
do anything. Most mushrooms we see in our yards are beneficial
fungi — saprophytic fungus. They are actually an indication
of a good thing: lots of organic matter present. The part of the
mushroom you see is sort of the "fruiting" structure of the fungus
exploding forth. They love wet, warm weather, and as long as
there's organic matter to feed on, they will continue to reproduce.
Once it's all been consumed by the fungus, the mushrooms will
disappear. That, however, could sometimes take several years.
The best solution is to ignore the mushrooms. Or, you can rake
them out or pluck them up when they appear. If you prefer, you
can just mow them down.
There is no "silver bullet" spray that will make them go away
without killing everything else in the soil, too. There are, however,
a couple of topical fungicides that can reduce their numbers. I've
recommended Consan Triple Action 20 for this for years. Or, if
you want an organic method, dust with agricultural sulfur.
The second most often-asked question about "shrooms" is, "Are
they edible or poisonous?" I think it is unwise to eat mushrooms
from your yard, even though these kinds of mushrooms may not,
themselves, be poisonous. But the organic matter they grow in
is. And because the types of mushrooms found in yards vary by
environment, the time of year, and the weather conditions, it is
usually best and safer to assume that any mushroom in your yard
is poisonous. I always err on the side of "paranoia" and feel it's not
worth taking a chance. Even if they're not poisonous by definition,
they may still be somewhat toxic, and that could mean stomach
discomfort for some folks ingesting them.

Here's an amusing sidebar (which may only be funny to my Texas
A&M brethren ). There is an Aggie yell (Aggies do "yells," not
"cheers)" simply called "Military." Former students will know it as
the one where they salute. At the end of the yell, it goes, "A&M, Give
Us Room!" Of course, back in the '80s, those of us with a sense of
humor could never resist saying "A&M, Give Us Shrooms!" I still
chant that when I go to A&M games, and I use it on the air from time
to time when someone calls in with a "shroom" question. So, if you've
always wondered why I do that, now you know the rest of the story.

The pool is Closed on Mondays, except holidays: September 3.
Pool Parties
Our community pool is a great place for Bay Forest residents to
host small group parties for birthdays, for sports teams, for church
groups, etc.
Parties may be scheduled during regular hours and on Mondays.
No more than one party may be scheduled in the afternoon (noon
to 4:30 pm); no more than one party may be scheduled in the
evening (after 5:00 pm). Parties should be scheduled at least seven
(7) days in advance. There are two options for having a pool party.
Small Parties
Homeowners hosting parties with up to and including twentyfive (25) participants may be scheduled during regular hours and
may extend until 10:00 pm. Additional lifeguards may or may
not be needed to maintain an overall lifeguard to patron ratio
of 1:25 during a party scheduled during regular hours. Based
on the number of expected party participants and Sweetwater’s
experience with typical pool patronage during the time a party
is scheduled, additional lifeguards may be deemed needed and
supplied. The Bay Forest Community Association will pay for
any additional guards needed during regular hours.
Large Parties
Homeowners hosting parties with more than twenty-five (25)
participants or desiring exclusive use of the pool may schedule
parties on Monday in the afternoons (noon until 4:30 pm) or in
the evenings (5:00 pm until 10:00 pm). Sweetwater shall supply
sufficient lifeguards for each party, determined to maintain
an overall lifeguard to patron: ratio of 1:25. The homeowner is
responsible for paying Sweetwater an hourly rate of $10 for each
required lifeguard (minimum of two). There is no fee for using the
pool. The hourly rate will include any set up and cleanup activities.
Blue Marlins Swim Team
The Blue Marlins had a wonderful summer
swim season this year, in addition to placing
7th out of 20 swim teams present at the
Champ Meet Series. We are vey proud of our
Marlin swimmers! The Blue Marlin swim
season lasts a little over one month, spanning
from the middle of May thru the end of June.
A swim meet occurs every Saturday morning
during the month of June, for a total of 5 swim meets. Of course,
all meets are optional, but attendance is strongly encouraged.
Summer swim team offers the benefit of learning to swim the
length of the pool, while also perfecting a variety of swim strokes.
Typically, after one season of swim, most swimmers become
proficient in a minimum of two strokes; but more importantly,
become much stronger and confident in the pool, itself.
The Blue Marlins Swim Team encompasses three neighborhoods:
Bay Forest, Brook Forest & Bay Oaks, and encourages ages 5 thru
18 to participate. This year, we had several new young swimmers
added to our team. Remember, that you can join Blue Marlins at
any age under 18.
We hope that you will mark your calendars for next spring swim
registration! We would love to see new faces in ALL age levels.

July 4th Bike Parade
At the Bay Forest Bike Parade, prizes were given for the best
decorated bike in each parade.
One of the best things about the parade is that the people come
out and line the parade route and cheer on the parade riders.
Residents wave their flags and make some noise to celebrate the
riders and our country’s Independence Day!
Party at the Pool
Many people spent the day at the pool and enjoyed their
neighbors and the festivities. Hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks
were served. There were games and prizes for all age groups.
Bay Forest Mommies’ Club
June and July saw the advent of summer and lots of pool time
for Mommies Club members. Kelli Glenn and Billie Patterson
organized some “We are going to be at such-and-such place,
and join us if you would like to do so…” events. For example,
moms met at the play “Pinkalicious” at the Main Street Theater
at the end of June; at the Children’s Museum of Houston in early
July; at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in late July;
and had supper and swimming at Galveston Beach on July 26th.
Upcoming events include seeing the bats at the Waugh Street
Bridge in Houston on August 23rd. On Tuesdays, people are
welcome to meet at the Cinemark Theater at 10:00 am for a
movie ($1.00 fee) or for swimming every Tuesday evening from
4:00 to 6:00 pm at the pool.
Mommies Club and the Bay Forest Community Association
sponsored an event on July 21st at the pool to welcome Don
Pettit home from his LLOONNGG journey in space. Thank you
to Carol Bornstein (Organizer Extraordinaire and Cookie Cake
Provider), Joy King (Pizza Procurer), Jennifer Aber (Snow Cone
Mama), Edrina Fitting (Paper Goods Dispenser), and John Haas,
Dennis Fouty, and Gene Fisseler (Bounteous Beverage Buyers)
and all of the friends and neighbors who brought fruit and side
dishes! Don left his home in early Nov. to go to Russia. He left
for space on Dec. 21st and finally returned to Houston on July
1st. He spent over 6 months orbiting the Earth! While he is still
getting used to dealing with the pesky issue of gravity again, he
is glad to be home. Welcome Back, Don!

concerns. Local trips are planned each year to gardens or

Bay Forest Gourmet Club
It’s not too late to join for the 2012-2013 year. Dues are only $20
per year.
This year’s theme will be the Olympics, featuring food from
five different Olympic host cities. Our first big dinner will be on
October 6, 2012, and we will be enjoying food from the first host
of the modern Olympics, Athens. Don’t forget to mark the date
for the party. If you are not a member but have considered joining,
why don’t you plan to attend? Just bring your favorite kabob or
Greek salad recipe and join us for the fun. Send us an email at

recipe for Greek salad, try this one.
Greek Country Salata
½ head romaine lettuce, shredded (4 cups)
1 small cucumber, thinly sliced (1 cup)
2 tomatoes, cut into 1-inch pieces (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced (about 1/2 cup)
½ green sweet pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
Greek dressing (see recipe below)
16kalamata or Greek black olives
6 to 8 anchovy fillets
4 ounces crumbled feta cheese
Lemon wedges (optional)
Byzantine dolmades (optional to purchase dolmades)
1. Place lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onion, and, if desired,
sweet pepper in a large salad bowl.
2. Toss with Greek Dressing and top with olives, anchovies
and feta cheese. Garnish with lemon wedges or dolmades,
if desired.
Greek Dressing
¼ cup olive oil
2 tablespoons snipped parsley or mint
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
1 clove garlic, minced
½ teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
Combine all ingredients and refrigerate – you can prepare
dressing up to three days in advance.

The money we raise will go to the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer
Crusade, whose mission is to fund access to care and finding a
cure. They provide funding to organizations all over the country
in five areas: medical research, clinical care, support services,
educational and advocacy seminars, and community-based, nonprofit early detection breast health programs.

presentation on their recommendation. Other suggestions that
have not been organized into committees will also be considered
in the final plans.
It is not too late to contribute your opinion or join a subcommittee!

Camp & Freshman Mixer
Students Mark Your Calendars — August 16
The freshman mixer is an opportunity for you to hang out with
old friends from your middle school and meet incoming freshmen
from the other schools. This is a great way to take the “edge off”
that first day of school.
The PTSA arranges munchies, drinks and music. It’s a lot of fun and
a great way to start off your freshman year at CLHS. Activities for
the day will include previews of clubs, an information assembly,
and tours of the campus. Refreshments and a time for socializing
are planned at the end of Fish Camp.
FISH CAMP is on Thursday, August 16 from 8:45 am to 12:00
noon. Fish Camp registration will start in the Krueger Field House
at 8:45 am. The Mixer is in the NGC Commons area following
Fish Camp and will last until 1:00 pm.

Drivers are not allowed to park in the back lot and walk students
into school. Parents who wish to accompany students into the
building on the first day of school must park in the front lot and
walk with their children through the main entrance. Students are
dismissed at 3:15 pm. daily. Please keep our children safe by
using caution when visiting our campus.

The 2012-2013 school year is right around the corner. The FPE
office will be open weekdays from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. and 1:00
– 2:00 p.m. for new student and Kindergarten registration from
Monday, August 8 – Wednesday, August 22. The first day of
school is Monday, August 27. Students must be in their classrooms
by 8:15 a.m.
For everyone’s safety, please observe the following rules for
entering and exiting Falcon Pass Elementary School. The main
parking lot is reserved for school bus drop off and pick up. The
small circular lot on Falcon Pass Drive is reserved for day care
vans and buses. Walkers and bike riders enter the building through
the side doors by the hard top next to the CLHS fields. Car riders
enter through the cafeteria by using the long driveway behind the
school next to the CLHS fields. Drivers must come to a complete
