Yo Sketch Dawgs!
Yo Sketch Dawgs! a big thanks to all of you who checked out the new site when it premiered a few weeks ago! It was great fun to create and launch, and I hope you find it a useful resource for inspiration, ideas and those inevitable days when we all hit a creative brick wall. I’ve been hammered with emails asking, “Whazzup with your sketches and the Green Bay Packers?” Well, let’s see if I can answer this burning question without offending any of you who might be cheese heads (qualifying the aforesaid statement by pointing out that I am a life long, diehard Minnesota Vikings fan). Call me a purist, but I still draw my sketches by hand to this day. A friend of mine deduced that it is my doodling inner child coming out to play. [Yeah, whatever.] Quite frankly, the only “inner” thing about me is my belly button. But, I digress. Where was I? Oh yeah, the Packers. Right. Okay, so a couple of years ago, the combination of Sunday football, a few blank sheets of paper and a No. 2 pencil, turned into Monday morning sketches posted at Memory Creators. One particular Monday, I posted an irregular (okay, obscene) amount of sketches and Shawna, one of the home girls a t M C , wo n d e re d what had made the previous Sunday so prolific in the sketch d e p a r t m e nt. [ I t is i m p o r ta nt to n ote at this juncture that she is a Packers fan.] Never one to pa s s up an opportunity to poke fun at a cheese head, I explained to her that the Packers had been waxed the day before by the Colts and one of layout: Becky Fleck photos: Tricia Ribble Favre’s worst career days resulted in one of my most productive sketch days. I managed to state this with a straight face, but inside I was suffering from a fit of giggles. Shawna clearly failed to see the humor and war was declared for the rest of the football season. [Good on ya mate if you are still with me on this drawn out, little story.] The wins and losses of any given Sunday could be loosely gauged by the amount of sketches that showed up on Monday morning, becoming a standing joke at MC. If the Packers lost, sketches were plentiful; if the Vikings lost, I pouted and took a nap. So there you have it—three degrees of separation that gets you from football, to wins and losses, to sketches. Another question I’ve been asked is if the full page pdf’s will still be available for you to print. I hear y’all keep them in binders? Very cool! The short answer is yes, and individual jpeg images will also be posted each month for downloading. Once again, a big thanks to Stayce at Memory Creators for housing my sketches over the past two and a half years— appreciate the free rent, girlfriend! On the horizon, be looking for new 8”x8” sketches, more card sketches, and the first installment of ColorMaps. If you have ideas, suggestions or requests, shoot me an email at suggestions@pagemaps.com. If you’d like to share your layouts and cards, attach a scan or photo and jet that bad boy to share@pagemaps.com. I really dig seeing everyone’s work!
