Category Manager
Consistent with previous years, the Cigarette and Tobacco
category found itself in an environment of change in 2014.
With declining rate of cigarettes cartons sold, increases in cigar stick sales, increases in moist snuff sales and the infusion
of electronic cigarettes into the category, retailers needed
to remain diligent in order to stay ahead of a sea of change.
A convenience store strongly engaged in understanding the
category and its customer will focus on several topics such
as: correct item mix, market baskets, trends, new items,
pricing, maximizing visible location and shelf space. Stores
may want to consider plans for how often they rework item
mixes and if their customer’s habits are changing.
With the convenience class of trade representing over 68%
share of total industry on cigarettes, 73% share on moist
tobacco and 60% share of cigars, the convenience retailer
success depends on an understanding of the trends within
the category. The US Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that

GDP grew as much as 5% in the third quarter of 2014 indicating strength in the market. The convenience class of trade
showed a 5.3% lift in inside sales that same time frame,
with gross profits rising 4.3%. This growth shows that the
convenience store should remain diligent in catering to its
consumers and their additional spending.
Consumers continue to look toward a c-store as a provider
for all tobacco and nicotine products. A savvy c-store operator can take advantage of this growth by adopting a mindset
of spoiling their customer with a central focus towards opportunity and availability. With emerging trends in subcategories such as electronic cigarettes, MST and SNUS, in addition to multiple new flavors and line extensions, retailers
must remain focused in understanding and adapting to the
constant barrage of changes headed their way. The growth
can continue and retailers must be ready to take advantage
of that growth.
CIGARETTES
There is as much activity in the
cigarette category today as at
any point in the past half century
and although the sales trends in
2014 are similar to those in the
more recent past with declines of
3.5% to 4.5% there might just be
a silver lining in the form of item specifics such as menthol and premium priced
brands.
Cigarettes are currently yielding 14.7% of inside margin
for c-stores, which represents a 0.4% increase over
2013. Cigarette volume is
expected to continue declining in the coming year. Sales
in convenience fell for a third
year in a row, giving up share
to smaller subcategories which
include electronic cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, pipe tobacco and cigars
which all saw growth. For the foreseeable future, the anticipated rate of
decline according to tobacco analysts
will range from 3.5% to 4.5% per
6 CIGARETTES/OTP
year. More pressure is being placed on the category because
of e-cigarettes and other OTP segments. While it is still difficult to obtain comprehensive performance metrics, there
is a consensus that the e-cigarette category may be cannibalizing cigarettes by as much as 1%. McLane Company’s
cigarette carton volume through 2014 is down 3.2% from the
same time last year.
Cigarettes remain #1
in store sales segment
serving as a destination
category in the
convenience class of
trade, and remain one
of the top categories
specific to Gross
Margin contribution.
The category itself continues to reflect healthy trends as
it relates to the premium/price value mix. Through 2014,
McLane carton volume reflects premium to have a market
share of 79.39% and price value to have a market share of
20.61%. This is consistent reflection of years over the previous year. These numbers tend to reflect the promotional
activity being displayed by companies like Altria, RJRT
and Lorillard. The activity by these manufacturers, and to
some degree the price points associated with Marlboro line
extensions, continue to spur trends in favor of the premium
segment. These efforts continue to yield trends in favor of
the premium segment. In total, average cartons per week/
per store landed at 128.5 in 2014.
Although the category operates in a constant state of decline, there are a few components of the category that appear to be stalling—with some even showing signs of growth.
For example, at McLane Company, Lorillard has sustained
only a modest carton decline in 2014 of 1.3% and by outperforming the market they have increased market share
to 16.1%. Positive trends have become somewhat commonplace for the Lorillard organization, largely attributable to
the continued success of the Newport and Maverick brands.
Another positive storyline is found in the performance of
Santa Fe and Nat Sherman brands, with positive share and
carton growth for the category. These two manufacturers
alone help illustrate why premium cigarettes continue to
do well in the marketplace. Santa Fe markets only American Spirits which is premium priced. Nat Sherman offers a
variety of brands with growth coming from their Natural
Kings. At McLane Company, Santa Fe has experienced a volume increase of 10.5% through 2014, while Nat Sherman has
experienced a volume increase of 7.5%.

Cigarettes remain the #1 in-store sales segment serving as a
destination category in the convenience class of trade and
remains one of the top categories specific to gross margin
contribution. With cigarettes consuming an estimated share
of 38% of total in-store sales, it is critical to remain focused
on providing a comprehensive merchandising selection in
order to meet consumer needs.
Other Tobacco Products
For the majority of 2014, the OTP category has continued
experiencing positive trends. Convenience margins for OTP
are hovering around 31.7% and are expected to sustain this
rate in the coming year. OTP Shoppers continue to have the
2nd highest c-store visit frequency of all category shoppers
and their market basket averages $11.93 versus a non-OTP
average of $9.48 (NPD Group). From an industry perspective, OTP sales have grown 6.3% in the convenience channel for 2014. This pattern of growth is attributed to moist
snuff, as well as continued changes in pricing structures and
consumer behavior with respect to cigars. Through September of 2014 , moist snuff grew 6.8% in dollars and 2.5% in
units. In fact, this segment has grown at a rate of at least
four percent since 2009 and is expected to maintain that
pace for the foreseeable future (Nielsen). For the total cigar
market, consumers choose convenience and tobacco shops
more often than any other class of trade. C-stores have seen
profits increase 9.6% in OTP for 2014, driven by MST and ecigarettes (NACS). Neilson breaks down the 2014 OTP market
contribution for each segment as follows: 56.6% MST, 28.6%
cigars and 9.6% e-cigarettes, with RYO and papers making up
the difference.
Moist Snuff
Smokeless tobacco continues to have strong year-over-year
unit and dollar sales growth, leading to this subcategory
accounting for greater than 56.6% of the total OTP category. With mid-single digit can growth, smokeless tobacco
is buoyed by solid price offering leading to great perceived
value, as well a strong variety of SKUs and flavors. Grizzly,
although barely a decade old brand, continues to lead the
pack in smokeless by offering the top performing SKU in LC
Wintergreen, as well as an overall brand of items that continues to surge in popularity with adult tobacco consumers.
Moreover, with Altria offering competitive pricing on their
new Skoal and Copenhagen items such as Copenhagen Southern Blend, this lower price point has allowed Copenhagen to
gain share and remain fiercely competitive with the surging

success of RJR’s Grizzly brand. With flavor extensions such
as Swedish Match offering peach flavor under the Timer Wolf
brand, and Swisher offering
a grape flavor under the
Kayak brand; it is clear
that smokeless tobacco
manufacturers are in fact
listening to customer’s
demands and working to
capture the adult tobacco
consumer by creating smokeless
segment flavors that weren’t previously available. Simply put,
moist smokeless is sustained
by Reynolds’ Grizzly brand
and Altria’s Copenhagen and
Skoal brands which account
for over three quarters of the
total category and enhanced
by offerings of Timer Wolf,
Longhorn and Kayak; making it the driving force of
true overall growth in the
OTP category.
Industry expectations and
estimates are that moist smokeless
will continue to have true growth
for the reasons noted above, in
the range of 4% - 6% annually. Moist
snuff volume is up 6.4% in 2014
8 CIGARETTES/OTP
(Nielsen). Moist snuff covers almost 42% of the total OTP
units sold and over 56% of the dollars (Nielsen). Low priced
pouch snuff accounts for 71% of this growth and low priced
loose account for 16% (Nielsen). Low priced pouch sales
have recognized the largest gains (as high as 25%) as smokers continue entering this segment. (Note: About 80% of
moist snuff users also smoke cigarettes.)

A relatively smaller category contender, Snus, has experienced a modest increase of 1.6% in unit sales (Nielsen).
In stores that carry the four major brands, Camel controls
69.2% of the market, followed by General at 20.0% and Skoal
at 10.9% (Nielsen). As you may suspect, Camel and General
are the brands currently spurring growth in this segment.
With large sales increases in 2010, as well as the first half
of 2011, SNUS was gaining traction and was proving to be
a viable player in the OTP category. However, the double
digit growth flattened out in the latter half of 2011 and then
stalled in 2012 with small declines in year-over-year sales.
Expect 2015 to have growth in the SNUS arena as Swedish
Match, RJR and Altria continue to turn smoking bans into
opportunity by working to attract the smokeless adult consumer to this creative concept.

Chewing Tobacco
For another consecutive year,
chewing tobacco had a decline in
consumer units; however, dollar
sales increased as a result of
manufacturer price increases. With that said, it is absolutely imperative as you strive
to be the solution destination for
your consumer that you offer at
least two, and in many cases
depending on your location,
three SKUs of chewing
tobacco. Red Man, Levi
Garrett, Red Man Golden
Blend and Beechnut are
desired by a specific segment of
customers, making them a must for
your tobacco planogram.
Cigars
As witnessed over the past three
years, cigar unit sales continue to
perform with favorable growth.
This is spurred by both new items
and innovation, as well as pre-priced
multipack cigars. For 2014 cigar
dollar sales grew by an average of
3.8%, a notable improvement given
the dollar erosion associated with a
flood of pre-priced items entering the market (Nielsen). A more
impressive growth pattern exists
with single and multipack foil
pouches, which have grown 29.9%
in units in 2014, driving unit
growth of for the entire cigar
category (Nielsen). Consumers are moving away from single
stick cellophane wrapped cigars
card board multi-packs and gravitating towards foil wrapped singles and
pouches. With regards to cigar flavors: unflavored, sweet and blueberry still hold the
highest market share positions in this segment.
The makeup of market share for this segment is
now 79% foil pouch/singles and 21% traditional cardboard
packs (Nielsen). It is expected that consumers will continue
to gravitate toward foil pouches/singles as prices are more
attractive and innovation continues to improve. Swisher,
Swedish, Altadis and National Tobacco all have foil pouch offerings that are gaining momentum in the marketplace.

THROUGH 2014 cigar
dollar sales grew
by 3.8%, a notable
improvement given
the dollar erosion
associated with a
flood of pre-priced
items entering the
market. A more
impressive growth
pattern exists with
single and multipack
foil pouches, which
have grown 29.9% in
units in the last 6
months, driving unit
growth of 8.5% for the
entire cigar category.

Roll and Make
Your Own
This is a segment of the OTP category that warrants a review due to
growth and the consumer’s mindset to
try new products and experiment. Consisting of cigarette smoking tobacco, pipe
tobacco, cigarette rolling papers,
cigarette filter tubes and cigarette making machines, the category has enjoyed a relatively great
run with cigarette sales continuing
their seemingly irreversible decline
over the last five years. Consumers have
steadily moved away from rollyour-own cigarette tobacco in
favor of pipe tobacco. Pipe
tobacco accounts for 90% of
all smoking tobacco sold in the
category. These destination items
provide high gross profit margin,
high inventory turns and increased
consumer demand along with ancillary
sales. Retailers embracing the category have enjoyed increased OTP profits up to 11% and upwards of $250 in sales
per month per store. The category has been and will continue to be the product of choice for the tobacco-smoking
consumer. The category provides the value and quality the
smoking consumer wants. As one of the best kept secrets
for convenience stores, the opportunity that make-yourown offers retailers confirms that they would do well to
consider allocating space for this category.

E-Cigs
As referenced earlier, ecigarettes continue to be a
hot topic in the tobacco category—both among c-stores
as well as other classes of
trade. Retailers are consistently exposed to a growing
swath of suppliers, products
and flavors; to the extent it can
become difficult to pinpoint the most
appropriate mix for their store(s).
Towards the end of 2013, McLane
witnessed a leveling off of the explosive
growth of e-cigarettes. That growth continued to flatten in the early part
of 2014, with an industry
growth of only 10.3%, while
the category as a whole is
up 45.83% over prior year
(Excel). In late 2013 we began to see a sharp increase
in an otherwise unknown
category, e-liquids; the
growth of which has
continued to climb through
2014. While data on e-liquids
is largely unavailable due to
the high levels of online activity, it is estimated that this
once niche classification now makes up over 60% of the total
e-cigarette category. From a c-store industry perspective,
e-cigarette units are up 15.8% in the first half of 2014, and
e-cigarette dollars are up 13.7%.
From a c-store industry
perspective, E-cig units

Industry wide, through September 2014, the e-cigarette (nonvape) market share for Blu e-cigarettes hit 35.52%Logic 10.25%,
Vuse 7.77%, Mark Ten 7.75% and NJoy 6.25%. For cig-alike items
at McLane, 2014 sales increased 30.42% over the 2013 (McLane

Ten 10.26% and NJoy 7.74% for 2014 (McLane MPulse Database). It is anticipated that Vuse (RJR) and Mark Ten (Altria)
will continue building market share as they continue to expand
both product mix and availability across the U.S.
Starting in May of 2014, McLane Company entered into the
vaping market with a few select brands. These brands were
selected due to their: market strength, quality of production
and reliability within the distribution channel. Those brands
include: Haus, Vapin, VooDoo, NJoy, Zig Zag, Real, Vapor X and

Clearly the cigarette and OTP categories are in a constant
state of flux and the challenge to the retailer is to be on top
of those changes and recognize the need to adapt. In order to
set themselves apart from their competition, a retailer must
ensure they place a significant amount of resources toward
12 CIGARETTES/OTP
effective category management and understand how this can
align with promoting the categories. In today’s marketplace,
successful retailers are pooling their supply side resources
for product and merchandising recommendations that will
help them compete in the ever challenging retail arena. True
category management starts with an internal look at the value
of the cigarette and OTP categories within the store, understanding the items available, consumer preference in their
geographic region, consistent review of the planograms and
updating the mix to keep up with the changes.
In efforts to provide solutions to the previous questions,
McLane has a plethora of resources at retailer’s disposal giving
them the tools, resources and technology to be able to take a
best in class category approach to tobacco.

With decline in fuel consumption, slowing population growth
and competition from other channels in convenience, it is
imperative that retailers leverage their strengths in center
store sales and immediate consumption offerings. Immediate consumption trips account for 50% of convenience shopper visits and salty snacks is one of the top
destination categories.
What better to pair a higher rate of sales with a higher rate
of margins? According to a Willard Bishop study, warehouse
snacks deliver an average of 12% higher margins than DSD.
General Mills also conducted a study that proves that with
just less than one-third of salty category space, warehouse
snacks contribute more than half of the overall salty category profit.
46 SNACKS: SALTY
The growth in the salty snack category is just as compelling,
with more than 90% of households in the US reporting consumption a salty snack within the past thirty days, of which
very few limit themselves to just one or two types. The warehouse salty category is over $1.8 billion in total dollar volume
over the latest 52 weeks, and is growing 5.4% versus last year.
Warehouse salty snacks also represent 44% of dollar sales in
total salty snacks and the category overall is projected to
have a 6.2% compounded annual growth rate in dollar sales
from 2012 through 2017. McLane MPulse data for the last 90
days ending January 2nd shows a C-store/TTL APSW growth of
12.28% for the salty snack category.
Nuts, Seeds, and Trail Mix
Mintel projects a 9 to 11% annual growth in nuts, seeds and
trail mix as consumer awareness of the nutritional benefits of
the category continue to increase.

Nuts and seeds generate more
dollars than any other salty
snack category and have experienced double-digit growth
over the past three years. This
growth is expected to grow an
additional 61% from 2013 through
2018, reaching $10.1 billion at
current prices. McLane MPulse
data for the last 90 days ending
January 2nd shows a C-store/TTL
APSW growth of 15.45% for the nut
segment. Some of the popularity
of nuts and seeds can be attributed to a 2013 Harvard study that
claimed that people who
consume nuts live longer,
healthier lives.
Kraft Planters, Blue Diamond,
Emerald and Snak Club nuts
continue to be core contributors
to salty sets. Wonderful Pistachios
has proven itself to be a top-selling
item in convenience, nearly doubling in growth each year for the past 4
years. New and exciting innovation in the
nut segment this year include: Planters Salted Caramel, Sea
Salt and Vinegar and Chili Lime flavors, which are available
in both tubes and 2 ounce cans.

Potato chips, which were created in error over 150 years

billion in sales from 2008
to 2013 and are expected
to grow another billion and
a half through 2018. As key
driver of growth leader within
salty snacks, potato chips
are experiencing a 9.4% dollar growth according to IRI
data for the latest 52 weeks
ending November 4, 2014.
McLane MPulse data for
the last 90 days ending
January 2nd shows C-store/
TTL APSW growth of 15.01%
for the chips, pretzels and
rinds segment. The segment
is driven by Pringles which
experienced a 10.6% growth
and followed by Kettle who
experienced a 16% growth
versus a year ago. Like other categories, bold and unique
flavors such as flame roasted, Asia/Middle Eastern inspired,
and sweet and salty combinations are becoming increasingly
popular due to a growing appetite for exotic spices and complex profiles. Recent Mintel research indicates that 40% of
consumers are willing to try new flavors and 23% say spicier
foods are more appealing now than when they were younger.
While spicy flavors are on the rise, regional favorites such as
BBQ will also remain on trend.

two new “Thick and Bold” favors that sport a ridged texture:
Carolina BBQ and Dill Pickle. Kellogg’s Special K Chips and
Stacy’s remain staple items for both salty and better-for-you
chips. Each recently came out with new and exciting flavors,
Special K Honey BBQ and Stacy’s Fire Roasted Jalapeno. General Mills’ Chex Chips have proven themselves to be performers in 2014 and have two new Totino’s Pizza Chips this year in

because of brand recognition.

• 54% of salty snacks are purchased on impulse.
With that being said, half of consumers wait
in line for their transaction for more than 30
seconds and 2/3rds of these shoppers are
not doing anything while waiting.
This holds a great opportunity to
catch an impulse purchase by utilizing a salty section on your front
end or near the register.
• According to the Nielsen Category

are widespread across the US and

presenting an opportunity to have robust

Promoting
• Highlight an essential deal of the week to build shopper
awareness that the c-store is a fill-in destination
• Offer a product mix that supports value and fill-in trips.
These options are especially appealing to Millennials,
who live on-the-go more so than most and are less likely
to grocery shop. Think of bundling lunch or quick dinner
ideas that are easy to grab on the way home and that
don’t require a lot of complex ingredients.
• Promote anchor categories to get shoppers into your
stores, then pair right products for higher rings such as
salty snacks with sodas or beverages with potato chips.
• Focus on displays during key seasons and be strategic
with secondary placements. Leverage your core items on
displays placed as interruptions on paths to destination
categories.
• Call-outs on products such as new and healthy items help
drive impulse purchases in-store.
• Currently 89% of c-store shoppers participate in a loyalty
program of some sort. Establish loyalty programs that are
fast, simple, and rewarding for customers. Fuel loyalty
programs are a way to drive in store trips.
• Loyalty programs are especially appealing to the “superconsumer” who is someone that frequents the store
regularly, spends heavily and has an emotional resonance
with the channel itself. These “superconsumers” drive 40%
of all food and beverage sales in convenience.
• Leverage digital investments for increased trips and/or
bigger baskets.

Snacks: BETTER-FOR-YOU
Perceptions of
snacking have
shifted from a
behavior to be
avoided to a
means of sensible
eating. Betterfor-you snack
foods, such as
fruit, nutrition
bars and Greek
yogurt are on the
rise and projected
to grow 5% by
2018, according to The NPD
Group.

Within the 50 million consumers who often snack between
meals is a group of 14.2 million healthy snackers, who favor
salty snacks and claim that they usually only snack on healthy
foods. According to a Research & Markets report, “Salty
Snacks in the U.S.,” there is a rapidly evolving market that
food marketers increasingly count on to lift their overall profitability. It shows how the packaged food industry’s recent
efforts to roll out a wider array of exciting and innovative
healthy-ingredient versions of salty snacks can succeed by
targeting a critically important subset of healthy snackers.
Perceptions of snacking have shifted from a behavior to be
avoided to a means of sensible eating. Better-for-you snack
foods, such as fruit, nutrition bars and Greek yogurt, are
on the rise and projected to grow 5% by 2018, according to
The NPD Group. Driving growth in better-for-you snack foods
are Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z, who have

positive attitudes about snacking and a desire to eat more
healthful and convenient foods. This segment experienced a
phenomenal growth in sales of 62% in 2013.
Better-for-you is a fairly new
term which has fast became
its own segment in convenience. This segment can overlap
several different
snack categories
such as nutritional, nuts, seeds,
chips, jerky, and
the list goes on.
Even in its beginning
stages with vague merchandising direction, it is nothing to
ignore as 61% of consumers are actively seeking healthier
snacks and 20% of consumers “strongly agree” they would
shop at a c-store more if it carried more better-for-you
products (Men 17%, Women 22%). This segment has great
opportunity to add incremental growth to your snack sets
while changing the way traditional convenience stores are
viewed by women.
their food comes from. While barriers for purchase in this
segment can sometimes include price (along with selection
and freshness), 58% of millennials are willing to pay more
for better-for-you items.
Merchandising/Promoting
Although better-for-you is a growing trend in snacking,
snacks must still taste good. More shoppers define betterfor-you as basic products and ingredients versus “elite”
or “niche” health, therefore offer healthier mainstream
items that also deliver on
taste. Also important
to these consumers is
the transparency of
the packaging.
According to a
Food Shopping
survey, 70%
say they want
to know where
If there is space in your store for a stand –alone, better-for-you
set that supports your store demographics, a 3 foot end cap
is suggested. If there is not room for a dedicated set, carve
out a 6 to 9 item section in your in-line salty set in a top-hand
corner. Make shopping for these items easy by having the set in
a highly visible area (at least for the first few months of implementation) such as across from the front counter and with
signage on windows and front doors to draw in foot traffic from
the gas pump. Having the right assortment is also important as
the best BFY options won’t force shoppers to make a tradeoff.
Include mainstream items in addition to items with call outs
such as low fat and calories, high protein and fiber, all natural
and whole grain. Since shoppers are more likely to think about
eating healthier in the morning, consider early-bird specials
that include cross promotions with water, fruit or yogurt.

Automotive—Focus on
Innovations & Opportunities
An imperative area of discussion in the convenience store
world is the increase in demand from Hispanic shoppers. According to the NPD group, “U.S. Hispanics make almost two
more visits a month than non-Hispanics to major oil chain
c-stores.” Hispanic consumers have increased spending more
than 200% since 2010, and that number is expected to increase to a spending power of $1.7 trillion by 2017 (CSPnet).
Without representation for this demographic group, retailers
will lose incremental sales.
68 AUTOMOTIVE
Another pivotal demographic group that should be a focus
in the automotive set is female shoppers. Women shoppers
expect a higher level of customer service in the convenience
channel, and typically purchase more impulse items. CSPnet
author Angel Abcede suggests having aesthetically appealing
displays, which the female shopper will be drawn to. According to CSPnet, “The female consumer accounts for $20
trillion in annual consumer spending, with that figure going
to $28 trillion in the next 5 years.” Without consideration
for this group of shoppers, this segment will choose to shop
elsewhere, and convenience stores will lose overall sales.
Continue to expect the high mileage and synthetic oils to rise
in demand as conventional oil loses ground. Millennials care
more about the condition of their vehicles and will happily
switch to a better product if the price is right. With gas prices
being as low as they are currently, there is a little more spending money for the younger consumer to use on a higher quality
product. As shown in Figure 1 below, the motor oil segment of
the automotive set continues to be the leader in sales. There
is a slight decrease in the sales percentage in 2014, as shown
in Figure 2, but that can be attributed to the harsh winter
weather in the beginning of the 2014 year which resulted in
unnatural sales for anti-freeze and window solvent.
consumers about the nearly 20% of oil
samples that failed the testing standards by creating the Motor Oil Matters
program, complete with a website
(www.MotorOilMatters.org), to inform
consumers and
encourage them to increase
purchasing in “quality”,
higher-end oils.
Although the synthetic and high
mileage blends are on the rise,
it is always a good idea to keep
value option oil in the set to
compliment the premium blends. This
gives another option and allows retailers
to reach more consumers. The McLane
private label oil, Road Tech, makes a top
quality value oil and consistently ranks in
the top 15 of oil sales each year.
Following are the top SKUs sold in the motor oil category. With
new standards coming in 2017, and thinner oil trends climbing,
expect this chart to change in the near future.

As shown in Figure 1, the number one item in the GMP set in

BlueDEF continues to hold the
number one spot and is a must
in any Automotive set. As the
number of diesel vehicles
on the road equipped
with the Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
system increases by an
estimated 20% in 2015,
retailers must ensure
their shelves are fully stocked
with this product!
In 2014 the average age of a
vehicle was 11.4 years old.
Also, as the vehicle age
continues to trend upward, it is imperative that
a good mix of additives
with cleaners and those
that stop leaks are kept in
the set. With Millennials
having lived through, and
perhaps been impacted the
most by the economic recession, they seem to be choosing
the maintenance route for their vehicles (cstoredecisions).
The chart below represents the top SKUs sold in 2014 within
the additive category.

Car Accessories & Air
Fresheners
It is important to have a good mix of car accessories and air
fresheners in the store sets, as these items are high impulse
items. There is always much advancement in this area of the
automotive set. Combine tried and true products such as the
Lil Tree air freshener with new Perk vent wraps to maximize
appeal for all customers. Innovation is key!
There is peaking interest in innovative smoke odor eliminating products. There are some interesting reviver and smoke
wipes that make a good option for the elimination of smoke
odors and other strong odors. Keep an eye out for these
items as they are expected to be top sellers going into 2015.
Finally, retailers should ensure there is coverage with the
rarely changing essentials such as Duct tape and vinyl tape,
gas cans, Rain-X, and Fix-A-Flat. These basics are important
to the consumer who needs these items in an emergency
situation, or just for everyday use. As in the additive section, expect to see increases in do it yourself (DIY) repair
from the Millennial generation. Below are the top selling

Generally speaking, the current
year has been a much milder
winter compared to winter
2013-2014. That being said,
demand for anti-freeze

items is lower as well.
Retailers still need to
keep a good helping of

Peak antifreeze and

Conclusion
To sum it all up, although profits may not be as high in the
automotive area of the stores, it is crucial to the consumer
and is one of the most popular sections. Centered on major
throughways, many convenience stores are a quick and easy
way to pick up the essential automotive products. With so
many travelers passing through a retailer’s store, it pays to
be in-stock on these important items.
To meet the continuing demand for the needs and preferences of the general population, retailers should have an
eclectic representation in the automotive set. Include items
that are well-known big-sellers with items that are expected
to increase in demand over the years. Do not be afraid to
put in new items, you never know, it may just be the next
big thing!

Private Label: Salado Sales
According to Private
Label Manufacturers
Association’s 2014
Annual PrivateLabel Yearbook,
private label brands
have continued to
grow, outperforming national brands
in dollar and unit
gains in all major
retail channels
Written by:
Laura Moore
Category Manager
Private label brands are also setting new share records
across many categories. This sustained growth indicates that
consumers are not returning to national brands as some of
the larger brands predicted. Consumers continue to choose
the quality and value offered by private label brands over
national brands.
Across all channels combined, market share has increased
to 21.2% in units. The market share is significantly higher in
some categories. For example, 53% of all trash bags, food
storage bags and containers sold are private label brands
(Nielsen). The Health, Beauty and Wellness category also has
a higher private label penetration. The Internal Analgesics,
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) segment is at 47.9% private label,
while the allergy segment is at 43.3% (Nielsen).
Since 2011, private label’s annual sales have grown 5%, or
$5.3 billion, across all channels (Nielsen). Some onlookers
have been cautioning for years that private label brands had
their moment and private label market share and sales will
84 PRIVATE LABEL: SALADO SALES
decline as the economy improves. However, this is certainly
not the case based on the aforementioned trends. Consumers
do not see any reason to go back to spending mor e money
on national brands.
IRI recently reported that consumer brand
preferences do not change from channel to channel. The same consumer
shopping Food, Drug, and Mass for
private label will also purchase
private label in the Convenience
and Travel channels. It is important
that these channels increase their private label offerings to be competitive
with other classes of trade. As the
playing field for Convenience
and Travel expands to include
Drug and Dollar, private label
will be a key element in satisfying
consumer expectations.
Salado Sales provides a comprehensive line of control label
products designed to meet all our retailers’ objectives. We are
committed to keeping our product mix relevant and in -line
with consumer’s expectations. Furthermore, we have a vast
amount of experience developing private label programs and
are always willing to assist you in vetting the right solution for
your stores.
