Learner successes
Exhibitions
Congratulations to this year’s
Adult Learner Award winners!
We will be celebrating their
achievements at a fun family
event on July 18 at the Rivers
Centre. Tutors and staff look
forward to sharing stories like
Fozia’s, a mother of four
including triplets.
Are you signing up for a creative course? Would you like
to display your work?
In addition to our annual July exhibition, we are
planning further opportunities for learners to show
their work at Rivers and other venues.
For details of all exhibition opportunities and
accompanying demonstrations and mini-workshops,
please contact adult.education@milton-keynes.gov.uk
Fozia Abid has been offered a place at Northampton
University to train as a Primary teacher. She says: “My
learning experience with Adult Learning has been
amazing. My jouney began with basic maths, science
and English up to GCSE level. The support I received
from the tutors and staff was excellent. I am very
thankful to the tutors and support staff for making my
dream come true. ”

Visit the Project Space at MK Gallery during the month
of October to see work created by ACE learners, tutors
and friends. Work on display is inspired by the
landscape and cartography of Milton Keynes.

help you source materials and equipment

some courses

Make Do and Mend Weekend
Neighbourhood Employment Programme
Milton Keynes Council and Milton Keynes College are
working together with Job Centre Plus and a range of
voluntary and community organisations to provide
locally based job clubs to help unemployed young
people and adults into work.
The job clubs are based at the Rivers Centre, in
community centres, libraries and Parish offices in the
heart of priority estates so that as many people as
possible can get help.
We have an exciting choice of workshops planned for
22 and 23 November and a Vintage/Craft Fair 11am –
3pm on Sunday 23 November at the Rivers Centre. If
you are a collector or a maker and would like to book a
stall, please email adult.education@miltonkeynes.gov.uk.
It’s a great opportunity to test the market without too
much upfront investment.
Job clubs offer help with careers advice, job search, CV
writing, completing applications and basic computer
training. Advisors can help you find other training as
well, whether you are actively seeking work or
considering your options for the future.
An up-to-date list of job clubs, opening times and
contact details is on the Council website at:
www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/clmk
See page 34.
Get involved
Filling in feedback forms is not the only way to help us improve. We really value opportunities to talk directly to you about
your experiences and views so we visit as many classes as possible over the year and also host regular meetings and focus
groups.
Would you like to take part in one of these or represent learners at Milton Keynes Adult Learning Forum meetings?
Please tell your tutor, email us at adult.education@milton-keynes.gov.uk or phone Ritu on 01908 556751
Interviews and
skills checks
We want all learners to get the best from their course and
if you are applying for a qualification course we will
arrange a telephone or face-to-face interview to make
sure you understand what previous experience and
commitment the course requires.
English, ESOL and Maths learners will also have a
skills check to make sure that you start your course at
the right level.
Interviews and skills checks will take place at the Rivers
Centre and the Flexible Learning Centre - CMK Library
during August and the first week of September.
To book an English, ESOL or Maths Skills Check, call
01908 556703.

or

If you apply for a reduced fee or free place you will need to tell
us the reason and sign a declaration to confirm your eligibility.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
We may, regretfully, have to cancel courses if we do not receive enough
enrolments, or close them if there is a high level of non-attendance or
withdrawal. In these circumstances you will be informed as soon as
possible by text where possible through PageOne and a refund will be
made by crediting your credit/debit card or by cheques. It is not possible
for us to make refunds in cash.
However, to avoid disappointing learners who enrol on courses which do
not attract quite enough learners to be fully viable, ACE reserves the right
to adjust the course length. For example a course may be delivered more
intensively and end a week early. Under these circumstances no refunds
or partial refunds will be possible.
Session cancellation due to extreme weather
Wherever possible we will offer replacement or extended sessions to
make up for sessions cancelled due to extreme weather, tutor illness or
other unforeseen reason. In the unusual event that this is not possible, we
will recompense learners by issuing a pro-rata credit or learning voucher
against a future course.
Cancellation or transfer by the learner
If you need to withdraw from a course and inform us in writing at least 10
working days before the course is due to start, you will be eligible for a
refund of all fees minus a £30 administration charge. If you withdraw from
a course at any other time, you will not be eligible for a refund. However,
in exceptional circumstances and at our discretion, we may be able to
offer some credit against a future course.
Requests to transfer courses may also incur a £30 administration charge
unless recommended by your tutor or a member of ACE staff because a
course at a different level will better meet your learning needs.
Withdrawal from 24+ Advanced Learning Loan courses
We will retain your deposit of £100 if you do not take up a place offered
on a course eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, unless your loan
application has not been successful. We will also retain your deposit if you
withdraw early from such a course, regardless of the circumstances of
your withdrawal.

English, Maths and Science
Adult Learning offers Functional Skills and GCSE qualifications in English and Maths
Some adults leave school without English and Maths qualifications. Later, they find they need these core skills to
succeed at work, in their communities and as parents. Functional Skills are essential for getting the most from
education, training and employment as they offer problem solving skills alongside subject knowledge.
Why should I enrol on a Functional Skills course?
• Success at work – employers recognise their value
• Opportunity in education – a functional skills qualification will open doors to further and higher education
• Fulfilment in life – these practical skills equip learners to deal with everyday tasks
GCSE or Functional Skills?
We will be happy to provide you with advice and guidance on the best course for you.
Before joining a course, you will be asked to attend a Skills Check session. Call MK 556703 to make an appointment.

• Talk to our languages advisor on 01908 556705
Continuing your language learning?
Do you know your place on the Languages Ladder?
If you already hold any Languages Ladder certificates, make sure your new tutor knows which skills you have passed
at which levels. See www.assetlanguages.org.uk

Measure your progress on the Languages Ladder
How do you climb the Languages Ladder?
1 What is the Languages Ladder?
The Languages Ladder (Asset Languages) is a scheme which rewards your language learning achievements and
helps you chart your progress.
2 How does it work?
The Languages Ladder (Asset Languages) gives you the opportunity to focus on the language skills you need - listening, speaking, reading and writing – and helps you to identify more easily which class you should join. You
can start at Grade 1 in any skill and work your way up!
3 Do I have to do the assessment?
No, it is entirely optional, although most learners decide they would like to have their progress recognised.
Feedback from learners indicates that the step-by-step approach helps them build confidence and makes learning
easier.
4 When and where do these assessments take place?
Most assessments take place in the classroom and are very informal. This kind of assessment is part of the course
and it is unlikely that you will notice it happening! You might, for example, be asked to do an exercise as a group or
with a partner and the teacher will take the opportunity to listen in to what is going on.
5 How do I find out more about the Languages Ladder?
Your tutor should be able to give you more information, you can talk to our languages advisor on 01908 556705

Examination fees are included in the course fee
except where otherwise stated in the course
description.
Course fees do not include materials, equipment,
book or crèche costs, except where otherwise
stated.
It is inadvisable to buy materials for your course
until you are certain it is running.
It may occasionally be necessary for reasons
beyond our control to change the content,
timing, venue or tutor of a programme.
A place on a course may not be transferred to
another person without informing us and
ensuring that eligibility to join has been checked
and all enrolment details amended.
We are unable to accept responsibility for any
damage to or loss of student property. Any
valuable items should be covered by your own
insurance policy.
Cars and cycles are parked at the owner’s risk.
If your course involves physical activity you
should be medically fit or have your doctor’s
approval.
Smoking is not permitted at any of our venues.
We expect all learners and staff to play an active
part in promoting mutual respect and
challenging any form of discrimination or abuse.
We reserve the right to exclude any learner who
does not uphold this policy.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
We may, regretfully, have to cancel courses if we do
not receive enough enrolments, or close them if
there is a high level of non-attendance or
withdrawal. In these circumstances you will be
informed as soon as possible and a refund will be
made by crediting your credit/debit card or by
cheques. It is not possible for us to make refunds in
cash.
However, to avoid disappointing learners who enrol
on courses which do not attract quite enough
learners to be fully viable, we reserve the right to
adjust the course length. For example a course may
be delivered more intensively and end a week early.
Under these circumstances no refunds or partial
refunds will be possible.
Session cancellation due to extreme weather
Wherever possible we will offer replacement or
extended sessions to make up for sessions cancelled
O
Want to enrol? Call 01908 556760
due to extreme weather, tutor illness or other
unforeseen reason. In the unusual event that this is
not possible, we will recompense learners by issuing
a pro-rata credit or learning voucher against a future
course.
Cancellation or transfer by the learner
If you need to withdraw from a course and inform us
in writing at least 10 working days before the course
is due to start, you will be eligible for a refund of all
fees minus a £30 administration charge. If you
withdraw from a course at any other time, you will
not be eligible for a refund. However, in exceptional
circumstances and at our discretion, we may be able
to offer some credit against a future course.
Requests to transfer courses may also incur a £30
administration charge unless recommended by your
tutor or a member of staff because a course at a
different level will better meet your learning needs.
Withdrawal from 24+ Advanced Learning
Loan courses
We will retain your deposit of £100 or £150 pounds if
you do not take up a place offered on a course
unless your loan application has not been
successfull. We will also retain your deposit if you
withdraw early from such a course, regardless of the
circumstances of your withdrawal.
Additional support
Childcare costs
If you are claiming a free place on a qualification
course you are also entitled to apply for help with
childcare costs for the time you are at your course.

If you are claiming a free place on a qualification
course you may also be able to claim back the cost
of getting to your course by public transport and up
to £30 for the cost of books and course materials
and equipment. Please keep tickets and receipts and
ask us for a learning support form, which your tutor
will sign.

Frequently asked questions
Q Can I get help with enrolment?
A Yes. A member of staff can assist you with the enrolment process.
Q I have problems with my eyes, particularly when the writing is so small. Will you be able to help me?
A We can produce handouts and examination papers in bigger print, on coloured paper, on a memory stick or as
email attachments. If you are using a PC on your course we can adapt it for you.
Q I wear a hearing aid and sometimes it is very hard to hear things in noisy places. Do you have any
facilities to help with this problem?
A We can provide a portable hearing loop.
Q I can’t sit for two hours because I have a bad back. Do you provide any firm chairs for your classes?
A If sitting for a long time is uncomfortable due to a back condition or arthritis for example, it is possible for us to
provide a special adjustable chair.
Q My sister has learning difficulties and would need someone to assist her in class because of her ability
to understand information and instructions. Do you have any staff to help with this?
A If you have a learning difficulty and/or a physical disability we can arrange a 1:1 in class and/or out of class
support assistant.
Q I may require extra time to take the examination. Is this possible?
A We can make special arrangements in examinations and assessments for you (please note that evidence of
your disability will be required by the awarding bodies; please provide this as soon as possible).

Music Faculty
www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/clmk
Music education helps everyone to develop skills in a number
of areas; flexibility, the ability to solve problems, the confidence
to learn new skills, to be creative and innovative, and to strive
for excellence. It can help provide a strong sense of
determination, improved communication skills and have a
positive impact on intellectual development.
The Music Faculty (previously known at the Music Service)
delivers the ‘Totally Music’ programme in schools all over
Milton Keynes where nearly 6,000 children experience the
pleasure of learning a musical instrument. The programme
supports schools in delivering their Music Strategy, provides
whole class instrumental tuition and curriculum projects as
well as large group instrumental tuition. It encourages children

opportunity to sing and learn a musical instrument as well as to
perform as part of an ensemble or choir.
At the Music Centres based at Shenley Brook End school and
Simpson on Saturday mornings almost 1,000 young people
join in various ensembles and orchestras. The Music Centre
aims to give children an enjoyment of music while striving for
the very highest standards for those students who wish to
pursue music more seriously.
