2015 - 2016 SEASON SMALL AND PERRY www.nsfmhl.ca TAYLOR AND MOSS PELLERIN AND MACNEIL BYRNE AND SPOONER MACINTYRE THIBEAU WELCOME Barry Wisener President of NSFMHL AAA Dear NSFMHL Supporters I am very proud to present to you the Guide for the NSFMHL’s 2015 - 2016 season and invite you to review the information that follows. The guide this year takes on a different style, one the appeals to players, parents, university recruiters or just plain interested hockey fans and followers of our league. New features to the league include the requirement of our respective clubs to have at least one HP - 1 certified coach on the bench which is consistent with the specifications for all major leagues in this country. Our website has been upgraded to get a wider and deeper arrangement of content to stay attached to league activity. We have also adopted the services of individuals who will inject a level of expertice in the area of education, personal development, safety, officiating liasons and communication. Bell Aliant will step up the live streaming of selected games prior to Christmas which will transition into the “game of the week” after Christmas and into the playoffs. Many thanks to our corporate sponsors, to the companies behind our franchises, and the families who believe in a league that promotes skill development, personal growth and the opportunity to play competitive female hockey while living at home. Last but not least I would like to thank Stephen Murray and his team on the Female Council for the groundbreaking work they have done in the way female hockey is administered in Nova Scotia and for the incredible pool of female players who will move through the system with the excitement of some day playing in the NSFMHL. The NSFMHL executive deserves a high level of praise for managing their hockey business well and creating a very attractive brand to which our young female players recognize and hold in high regard. From the beginning of the season to their annual awards banquet they continue to generate a high level of competition with skill, character and enthusiasm in a very professional setting. As many of you know HNS has implemented a Central Online Registry for the upcoming season in female hockey. Better information earlier in the process allows us to administer programs in a quality fashion so we can place players on teams reflective of their skill level and mindset when it comes to hockey. Along with that the Executive Committees have been created to manage the regions with a Committee Chair at the helm. These committees will steer the process and get the players on the ice. The introduction of C hockey in selected areas will complete the list of things to accomplish to ensure our goals are met. Having said all of this we hope that these changes along with the continued good work with the NSFMHL the ever changing landscape will one day have us firing on all cylinders. Thank you for supporting the executive recognized below and for taking the time to review this Guide. Stephen Murray Chair, HNSFC EXECUTIVE Bob Perry Pictou County Team Representative Gordon Boyd Metro Team Representative Carol Ann Pyke Cape Breton Team Representative Les Parker East Hants Team Representative Barbara Tremaine Banquet, Awards and HC Registry Don Crawley HNS Rep and Regulations Advisor Heather Murphy HNS Rep and Budget Advisor “Our executive has worked hard at clearly defining our brand…to provide a highly skilled and competitive league for Nova Scotian females who see the value of staying home with their family, participating in school activities, involved in their communities and building good hockey and personal skills.” HP-1 CERTIFIED COACHES LIMITED TRAVEL EDUCATION RISK MANAGEMENT HIGHLY COMPETITIVE ATLANTIC AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OFF ICE PROGRAMS SKILL DEVELOPMENT AUS AND CIS SCOUTED OUTSTANDING HOCKEY EXPERIENCE RIGHT HERE AT HOME THE LEAGUE WE WATCH Dave Synishyn Chris Larade Head Coach SMU Women’s Hockey Team Head Coach Mount A Women’s Hockey Team Zack Ball Sean Fraser Bruce Donaldson Peter Murphy Head Coach STU Women’s Hockey Team Head Coach U de M Women’s Hockey Team Having an elite female midget league in the province allows us, as AUS coaches, to recruit players who have been developed at high level of hockey both as people and players. It is a great opportunity to watch potential players for our programs right in our back yard. The NSFMHL provides a great opportunity for female players to prepare for the next level. A recruiter has lot’s of time to see these local players over a balanced schedule from August to March. Our program has benefited with no less than 6 players impacting our roster as we continually look for talent from the league. It’s not about where or when you play, it’s about how you play and the NSFMHL provides us with that feature. Mount Allison is looking for enthusiastic student athletes who have the ambition and the ability to perform at the highest level of university academics and sports. The direction I see the NSFMHL taking guarantees that we will have a sustainable pool of qualified student athletes that could potentially add value to our program. The NSFMHL is a very important component to female hockey community and the AUS. Anytime you have an elite league that mirrors the next level in terms of professionalism and quality, it’s a recruiters dream…as coaches have the opportunity to track the progress of potential student athletes and sell our programs to them. The NSFMHL offers the very best in terms of opportunity and transition from Midget AAA to the CIS Level. Historically the league has had a number of graduates move on to become AUS all-stars helping their respective programs win AUS Championships and represent the AUS Conference at the CIS Nationals. UPEI continues to view the NSFMHL as one of our recruiting priorities and looks forward to another year of high end competition. The Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA League has long been a supplier of quality hockey players to the university ranks. We have had several league graduates play in our program and we look forward for opportunities to see these teams compete. The strength of all the Maritime midget AAA leagues has continued to grow and provide a viable option for players who wish to compete at a high level and stay closer to home. TI echo the sentiments of my collegues in the AUS in terms of the brand they have developed. The NSFMHL consistently consistently delivers well adjusted, hard working, academically sound, skilled players to the league.... female players who make a good account of themselves and the programs that got them ready for university hockey. The past two seasons saw steady improvement and the 2015-16 year should be no different. The Selects graduated four players from last season and have filled those spots with extremely high leveled young talent. Expectations for success this season are higher than ever! Having lost in the league final last season, there is a void feeling amongst the group. The Subway girls will be participating in 3-4 tournaments this year which should prepare them for the playoff run in late February and March. The coaching staff strongly believes we have learned a lot over the past couple of seasons and should be knocking on the door of a provincial title. In addition to his academic responsibilities he brings another skill set to the table to the Athletic Department. For the past 10 years varsity programs have utilized his expertice as an academic advisor for their athletes. Needless to say, his keen interest in hockey at the MHA level and background as a volunteer coach in minor hockey make him a natural to liason with sports teams, especially the hockey team. He has helped greatly in bringing the athletes into the community and supporting development programs (AMHA). Any female players in the NSFMHL AAA wishing to view the landscape of what is required to be a varsity athlete, suggestions on goal setting, time management, curriculum, personal development, or just the general transitional concerns from high school to university...Ian is at your disposal. He has worked with players in the past transitioning to university and college programs thoughout Canada and the U.S. and can be reached by calling 902 585-1312 or email ian.spooner@acadiau.ca As Hockey Nova Scotia Referee-in-Chief, Todd is responsible for the administration and development of the officiating program that includes over 1200 officials in the province officiating hockey games from novice to university. Part of that group is our growing female officiating division. Although it is not growing as fast as the male side there has been a great deal of progress. The female officiating program provides tremendous opportunities for young female players to continue in the game after they have finished playing or to give them extra ice time for skating development while learning a different aspect of the game and some pocket money at the same time. In particular he works closely with the NSFMHL AAA league to ensure we are providing quality officials for games as it continues to grow and develop into a premier league with tremendous opportunities for players. todd_robinson@toyota.ca Beth Reid Marie Normore Risk Management League Scheduler and Web Site Manager Beth has been with Hockey Nova Scotia for several years.
