MasterCAN connection / Identification of CAN bus wires for MasterCAN connection
2.2 Identification
connection
of
CAN
bus
wires
for
MasterCAN
ATTENTION: Before identification of wires to connect MasterCAN it is recommended to study carefully the electrical circuit diagram and the Operating Manual of the
vehicle on which MasterCAN is mounted.
To connect MasterCAN to CAN onboard bus, you must find and identify wires CAN-H
(CAN HIGH) and CAN-L (CAN LOW).
Physically, CAN bus most often is a twisted (stranded) pair of wires (30 windings a running
meter) with splitters to connect electronic control units (further on – ECU) that have
terminating resistors of 120 Ohms nominal impedance located at the ends of the bus. The
resistors may be mounted separately or may be integrated into the ECU. As a rule, there is
no SHLD wire.
Example. DEUTSCH company manufactures CAN buses made of special three-conductor
cable (CAN-H, CAN-L, and signal GND) with 7 to 12 mm external coating diameter, special
splitters, and terminating elements – terminating resistors designed to match wave
impedance during the transmission of messages in the bus and to suppress interference
(see Figure 7).
Figure 7 – Elements of the CAN bus produced by DEUTSCH company
There may be from one to six and more CAN buses on the vehicle of EURO-3 Environmental
Standard. They may be designated as M-CAN, T-CAN, I-CAN, H-CAN, A-CAN, EBS-CAN etc.
The following three CAN buses are of interest for fuel consumption monitoring:
T-CAN, M-CAN, and I-CAN (seldom).
T-CAN and M-CAN may have the following features:
•
•
•
Availability of OBD II connector for diagnostics (see Figure 8);
the color and cross-section of stranded pairs of wires;
connection of stranded pairs of wires to contacts in OBD II and ECU connectors.
MasterCAN Vehicle Data Interface
Operation Manual. Version 2.0
20
MasterCAN connection / Identification of CAN bus wires for MasterCAN connection
Example: If there is an OBD II diagnostics connector on the vehicle and a pair of stranded
wires of orange color one of which has a black band, and the other has a brown one, and
this pair of stranded wires matches the OBD II diagnostics connector, so this may be the
CAN bus you are looking for. In this case, the orange wire with the black band is CAN-H,
while the wire with the brown band is CAN-L.
Figure 8 – OBD II connector for diagnostics
Contacts of the ABS/ASR ECU system corresponding to CAN bus are identified according to
Figure 9.
Figure 9 – Identification of CAN bus in the ABS/ASR ECU connector ABS/ASR ECU
ATTENTION: Features of CAN bus may be different for different vehicle manufacturers. Besides, those features may be different for the same manufacturer depending on the particular design features of the vehicle and its configuration (the
engine, fuel supply system, the link between the engine EDC and the throttle pedal,
availability or absence of the electronic dashboard, digital tachograph etc).
Initial diagnostics and assessment of CAN bus serviceability may be carried out using a
multimeter by means of the following traditional methods:
•
•
continuity test of CAN-L and CAN-H wires;
short circuit and impedance check (full impedance depending on the terminating
resistors and input impedance of ECUs connected to the bus) between CAN-L and
CAN-H wires;
MasterCAN Vehicle Data Interface
Operation Manual. Version 2.0
21
MasterCAN connection / Identification of CAN bus wires for MasterCAN connection
•
measurement of voltages in CAN-L and CAN-H wires in the recessive mode (the
ignition is off, the battery disconnect switch is on) and in the dominant mode (the
ignition is on, the engine has been started).
The impedance check should be carried out with the whole onboard circuit off (the battery
disconnect switch is off). The control impedance value must be no more than 60 Ohms.
The serviceability check of CAN bus is carried out with the ignition and engine on, by
pressing and releasing the throttle pedal between the wires of the stranded pair of wires.
The control voltage value must be from 1.2 to 3.0 V.
CAN-H and CAN-L can be identified according to the following voltage values:
• recession mode — about 2.5 V (on both CAN-L and CAN-H);
• dominant mode — less than 2.5 V (on CAN-L) and more than 2.5 V (on CAN-H).
The oscilloscope pictures of signals from CAN-H and CAN-L wires have a view as presented
in Figure 10.

Connection
To connect MasterCAN of MasterCAN V-GATE modification to J1708 onboard bus, you must
use the oscilloscope to identify J1708.A and J1708.B wires.
The signal of J1708 bus is the differential-mode signal, the voltage amplitude in J1708.A
and J1708.B wires varies from 0 to 5 V.

MasterCAN connection / Connection / Using Crocodile contactless reader devices to connect MasterCAN input
2.5.1 Using Crocodile contactless reader devices to connect
MasterCAN input
Simple to operate, TECHNOTON-made contactless readers
are most suitable
for reliable and safe connection of MasterCAN to CAN and J1708 vehicle data buses. To
connect MasterCAN, you are recommended to use the following modifications of Crocodile
contactless reader devices (hereinafter Crocodile):
• CANCrocodile — for contactless connection of any MasterCAN modification to CAN bus
and obtaining data from the bus without removing the insulation layer of the wires and
with no electrical contact;
• 1708Crocodile — for contactless connection of MasterCAN V-GATE to J1708 bus and
obtaining data from the bus without removing the insulation layer of the wires and with
no electrical contact.
CANCrocodile and 1708Crocodile generate the output signal; the data contained in this
signal coincides with the data readings of the connected bus.

MasterCAN connection / Using MasterCAN as a summator of DUT-E CAN fuel level sensors
2.7 Using MasterCAN as a summator of DUT-E CAN fuel
level sensors
To measure the total volume of fuel in several tanks, you may use MasterCAN C 232/485
and MasterCAN V-GATE together with DUT-E CAN fuel level sensors.
The circuit diagram showing MasterCAN connection for summation of readings from two or
more DUT-E CAN sensors also specifying types of cables that need to be ordered is provided
in Annex E (Figure E.1).
S6 onboard bus enables to connect up to 8 DUT-E CAN sensors. You need to use decimal
addresses from 101 to 108.
The calibration table of the fuel tank in which the volume of fuel is measured should be
recorded into the internal memory of each of the DUT-E CAN sensors that are connected to
S6 bus.
MasterCAN receives fuel volume readings from each of the DUT-E CAN fuel level sensors
connected to S6 bus, sums them up and transmits the data on the total volume of fuel in
the form of output messages, in accordance with 1.5.3 (for MasterCAN C 232/48) and in
accordance with 1.5.4 (for MasterCAN V-GATE).
MasterCAN output messages when working as a summator for DUT-E CAN are sent
according to Modbus protocol or DUT-E COM protocol. (The current version of
DUT-E COM protocol may be downloaded at: http://www.jv-technoton.com/)Protocol
selection is made with SK MasterCAN service kit (see 3.7.4).
