HIGHAMPTON MESSENGER Issue 8 April—May 2011 CHAIRMAN CHARLES CHATS... For a long while, the parish web site has not been easy to find or use, but now it has a reorganisation on a new site. You will find the new easy to use site at www.highampton.org and if you want more information contact either Chris Lockwood, Michelle Ody or myself. It is that time in the cycle of the parish when the council has to stand down and if there are enough candidates an election will take place at the same time as the district council election and the referendum on the voting system. Anyone wishing to stand should have sent in their nomination forms by the 4th of April, I hope that all those interested have seen the poster in the notice board and done so, it is good to have people interested in serving their community. If there are more candidates than seats there will be a parish election. Towards the end of the month of April on Wednesday the 27th it is time for the Annual Parish Meeting. This is the same as an A.G.M. for the parish council, so please come along and meet and speak with your councillors . On the 9th of April there is a special recreation day at the Ruby Hub at Cookworthy Forest Centre, so if you are interested in any country pursuit go along and enjoy yourself. By the next edition of the newsletter the council will be back in place but I will not be writing this piece unless I am once again chairman, so I would like to thank you all for putting up with my ramblings up to the present time! Don't forget to vote in all the elections in May and remember that you cannot complain if you don't try to influence events. Charles Dumpleton (Parish Council Chairman) Thank you to everyone for their contributions to this issue. If you would like to submit an item or an advert for publication in the next issue please email highamptonnews@googlemail.com Alternatively please hand in any Newsletter items to the Village Post Office. Deadline for submissions for next issue: Wednesday 24th May 2011 If you have missed any of the previous issues please visit www.highampton.org Page 2 HOLY CROSS CHURCH SERVICES Sunday 10th April 11.15 am Holy Communion with Healing Revd K Roberts th Wednesday 13 April 12.00 noon Lent Silent Prayer Friday 22 2.00 pm April - Good Friday Good Friday Service Revd G Matthews rd Saturday 23 April - Easter Eve 8.00 pm Service of Light AT BLACK TORRINGTON Revd K Roberts Sunday 24th April - Easter Day 11.15 am Easter Holy Communion Revd G Matthews Sunday 8th May 11.15 am Holy Communion with Healing Revd K Roberts Sunday 22 11.15 am nd May Morning Prayer Mr T Lobley th Thursday 26 May 9.30 am Holy Communion Revd G Matthews Sunday 29th May 10.30 am Benefice Holy Communion AT BRADFORD Revd K Roberts Church Flower and Cleaning Rota 2011 April M Bowden & M Richards May J Harrow & V Letheren June M Baker & J Bull July G Bowden & D Croft August Sept For Holy Cross Church, Highampton Monday 11th April 2011 at 8pm. Parents also donated cakes for a cake stall. A total of £101.00 was raised. All the fun of the circus! Half term finished with razzle-dazzle for staff and children at Pre-school as they celebrated with a circus day. Over the past few weeks, children have been learning balancing skills for tightrope walking, juggling using their own hand -made juggling balls and stilt walking. The day was made complete some wonderful make up and costumes. The children and staff have much to celebrate, following a fantastic Ofsted report in the autumn term, and two members of staff being awarded their NVQ Level 2. The inspection assessed the Pre-school as being good in all areas of its provision, and the inspector commented that children were cared for and nurtured by staff. She also commented: 'Children are clearly happy confident and secure in the Pre-school’s calm and relaxed environment.’ The Pre-school is now looking to develop links with other providers and is keen to encourage parents to become more involved. Children, parents and committee members are also celebrating the achievements of Wendy Rose and Germaine Andrew, two of the Pre-school assistants, on the awarding of their NVQ Level 2. Their achievements mean all of the Pre-school staff have achieved nationally recognised qualifications. The Pre-school is held in Highampton Village Hall and operates on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9.15am and 3.15pm. There are also drop in toddler sessions Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Children are welcome unaccompanied from two years upwards. More details are available from Angie Rose, the Pre-school leader-on 01837 811149. Please do not leave valuables on view in unattended vehicles, this convinces thieves to attack your vehicle rather than someone else. Unfortunately the more isolated the car park the bigger risk you are taking. Please report any suspicious activity to the police, this type of offender is very difficult to catch without prompt reporting. A quad bike was stolen from the Tawstock Barnstaple area overnight on 9th/10th March. This farmer was lucky and recovered the bike nearby. This is the second quad bike theft, in a few days, locally. Please increase your security as this could be the start of a series of this type of crime. There are now available alarmed padlocks which make a very loud noise if disturbed. They cost a few pounds which is very reasonable compared to a quad bike. They will wake your dogs up at the very least. Please phone with any information on 08452 777 444. SCHOOL Help for Heroes A fantastic £370 was raised for the charity Help for Heroes at a coffee morning and sale in February organised by our two Year 6 children, Will Bowden and Chloe Rose. The event was very generously supported by families, friends and visitors to the School, and we would like to thank everyone who came or sent a donation. The charity was suggested by Will Bowden because we have been learning about World War II this term. RNAS Yeovilton The whole school enjoyed a great day out visiting RNAS Yeovilton in March to celebrate Science and Engineering Week, and to learn about flight, one of our topics for this term. The children took part in various activities, including making an ejector seat, dressing up in pilots’ clothing from past to present and designing a parachute to bring a real egg safely to the ground (not all successfully)! They also had a tour round the museum and spent time enjoying the various displays, including a simulated flight in a helicopter landing on an aircraft carrier, with the help of the museum’s excellent staff. The trip was partly funded by a grant from the British Science Association for National Science and Engineering Week. Football Success Congratulations are due to the School football team which is going from strength to strength. Recent wins have been achieved against Ashwater (3-2) and Bradford (2-0). There is only one more match before the end of the season, so wish us luck!! Red Nose Day – Comic Relief The children supported Red Nose Day by wearing something red to school and making a donation to the charity. Special Red Nose biscuits were made and eaten during the morning. Brandon Morel undertook a sponsored silence to raise money, and managed to stay silent all day at school and a little bit longer! Well done Brandon!! Carrot Cookies Following a lesson on rationing during the War when we made Carrot biscuits, we have had requests for the recipe – so here it is for you all to enjoy! = 2 tablespoons sugar = 1 tablespoon margarine = Few drops vanilla essence = 4 tablespoons grated carrot = 4 tablespoons self raising flour Blend the margarine and sugar together Beat in the vanilla essence Fold in the flour and carrot, you may need a little milk to bind it all together Put spoonfuls of the mixture on a greased baking tray Cook in a medium oven for about 20 minutes Page 7 Highampton PTFA Highampton PTFA would like to thank everyone who contributed to the fundraising events last year and would like to make you aware of other ways you may be able to help our local school. Page 8 WEST DEVON WALK & TALK OKEHAMPTON www.wfh.naturalenglang.org.uk www.westdevon.gov.uk Weekly short walks, weekly moderate walks and monthly Sundays walks = ALL FREE The ‘Walk & Talk’ scheme is operated by very enthusiastic and friendly volunteers, without whom it would be impossible to promote walking for health within your community. We have short walks on Tuesdays starting at 10.30am outside Waitrose and moderate walks on Wednesdays meeting at the Post office at 10.00am. Once a month we have a Sunday moderate walk. We meet at 1.30pm at the Post Office and then car share to a different location for a change of scene and terrain! New walkers are always welcome! With the scheme growing in ALL areas of West Devon, we are always keen to hear from anyone who is interested in joining our friendly team of volunteers – you can give as much time as you can spare. We offer FREE WALK LEADER TRAINING and on-going support. From 1st April there will be vehicle restrictions at all Recycling Centres. Many of the photographs shown were of properties that no longer exist, having been swept away in the name of progress! The February meeting saw the chairman present a slide show of the recent school centenary celebrations, together with scanned old photographs of village life at the turn of the previous century. All photographs of the event shot by Rodney Parrish and Maurice Thomas are now on a CD and deposited with HLHG for safe keeping together with a DVD of the reunion day taken by Steve Bridges. The Guest Book and the scrapbook, compiled and donated by Michelle Ody, have also been kindly handed over to our archives for security. For the March meeting we joined forces with the Hatherleigh History Society to celebrate their 30 th anniversary when Tony Beard of Radio Devon fame gave a lively talk on the history of Widecombe on the Moor. Because of an expected increase in numbers, the meeting was held in the in the Methodist Church instead of the usual venue in the Hatherleigh square. Our chairman is currently compiling a history of the local South Tetcott Hunt and has been given a photograph of the renowned huntsman Phil Back, who wrote the book ‘From Terrier Boy to Field Master’, now long out of print. The photograph depicts Phil Back leading what appear to be Mr Scott Browne’s hounds, through a nearby village. Can anyone recognise the cottages or have any information relating to the subject? If so, Maurice Thomas will be very pleased to hear from you. He can be contacted on 01409 231460. Our next meeting in April will be the AGM in the Village Hall when all will be welcome. Date to be advised. Highampton WI Meetings are held at 7.30pm in the Committee Room at the Village Hall on the second Wednesday of each month. If you would like to come along we would be delighted to see you. We are all looking forward to the warmer weather and the opportunity to visit another inspiring garden and have future planned visits to the theatre. Our stalwart Church Wardens are no longer able to continue in office – which brings us to a rather critical point - it appears that there is no one to take over from Jill and Val. We need church wardens to ensure that the church stays open for services and for the smooth running of the church . Services are currently held twice monthly, on the second and fourth Sundays and during the summer months there is a monthly midweek Holy Communion service. It would be regrettable if the church had to close, but that could be a real option if there is no one available to help in ensuring that the church stays open and is available for the ministry people appreciate. Is this something you could consider doing? I would love to hear from you and talk it over with you. (Revd) Kathy Roberts Phone 01409 231279 Robertskm8@aol.com
