needs. The appropriate activity level of
each participant is determined during an
initial assessment.
The Asthma Education Program, taught
by Deborah Chabot, a Certified Asthma
Educator, is designed to help participants
understand their asthma and medications;
when to take medication and why; and how
to avoid or control asthma triggers. The
program helps in developing an action plan,
so participants know what to do when they
have asthma symptoms. This program
teaches that asthma doesn’t have to limit
your life.

Education and Exercise
Optimize a Healthy Pregnancy
n a collaborative effort, the Parent Education Program of The
Birthing Center and The Bond Wellness Center at MCH are planning
education and exercise programs for childbearing women. The first of these
programs is a Prenatal Aquatics class. Pregnant women use the buoyancy of
water to move their bodies through a slow full range of motion. They learn the
importance of core muscle strength, alignment, balance and relaxation. At the
end of each Prenatal Aquatics class, experiences are shared and questions are
addressed in an informal relaxed atmosphere. This community of women
develops a fabric of support, vital for new and experienced Moms.
The instructors for this program rotate between
The Birthing Center nurses and The Bond
Wellness Center fitness instructors.
Leadership from both departments believes
there is greater success in working together.
Future collaborations to encourage prenatal
exercise and education are planned.

food labels, are supplements needed, and the effect

“As a nurse at MCH’s Birthing Center,
I have a strong bias about the high
quality and personal care. Until I gave
birth to Tucker, I didn’t fully realize the
uniqueness of delivering a
baby at MCH. My other
deliveries were at a much
larger hospital and the
experience was like
night and day. I had
a much more intimate
and personal relationship
with the staff at MCH.
Everyone was respectful of
my wishes. They allowed me
to have some control over
my care while always
offering professional
advice. Now that I’ve
experienced the MCH
Birthing Center, I wouldn’t
deliver anywhere else.”
