HBC started its intervention in the slum on 2 March, 2014. A child club has been formed in the slum comprising of 45 children. The child club members have been very proactive, taking up issues and advocating for the same. Due to the efforts of the children the slum has seen significant changes in the past one year. There is an area in the slum where pipes were strewn all over the place rendering it difficult for the children to play. Often children, while playing, would trip over the pipes and injure themselves. The children of the Gautam Nagar child club took it upon themselves to raise the issue and advocate for change with the local government authorities. A group of 20 children from the club actively participated in the process which was led by Child leaders Malati, Pratiksha and Shivani. They initiated the process by writing a letter to the Corporator seeking to meet him and discussing the issue. The Corporator accepted their request to meet him and on 12th February, 2015 the children met him and discussed the issue with him along with presenting a Charter of Demands. The Corporator showed a keen interest in the issues raised by the children and assured them to take immediate action on the issue. As a result of the advocacy by the children, the municipal workers started working on it the next day and within a week the underground pipes were constructed. Now the children are able to play on that area without any hassles. Since the efforts of the children were fruitful, it also developed a sense of achievement among the children boosting their leadership skills. In another similar instance, drains were lying uncovered in the slum. During rainy season, drain water would overflow leaving the roads choked. The area where the children used to play would get blocked with drain water leaving it impossible for the children to play. The children of the same child www.humarabachpan.org club took up this issue and advocated with the Corporator again as a result of which the drains were covered with immediate effect. www.humarabachpan.org Humara Adhikar, Swacch Samudaya – Children’s Surveillance of Sanitation Location: Delhi Sanitation and hygiene have been a pressing issue in the resettlement colonies of Narela and the lack of functional dustbins makes matter worse. The dustbins were painted and inscribed with messages such as “Swach samuday hi Swast Samuday hota hai” on its sides. Similar efforts were also made at MCD schools in and around the community. Over 300 children participated in the cause. Surveillance of Sanitation: Child leaders from Pocket 11, Narela have come together to monitor the issues that surround the basic services in their community.
