Huston Recently I decided to do something extra with my new pond/outdoor garden and that’s when I came across the NWF (National Wildlife Federation) and their certification program. In order to certify your backyard oasis you need to provide food, water, cover, places to raise young, and sustainable practices. Each category requires for you to provide a number of elements to obtain certification. Once all requirements have been met you can have your area certified and also give back to the species that share your space. Food (Requires 3 of the following) – Seeds from plants, berries, nectar, foliage/twigs, nuts, fruits, sap, pollen, suet, and bird/squirrel/hummingbird/butterfly feeders. Water (Requires 1 of the following) – Birdbath, lake, stream, season pool, ocean, water garden/pond, river, butterfly puddling area, rain garden, and/or a spring. Cover (Requires 2 of the following) – Wooded area, bramble patch, ground cover, rock pile or wall, cave, roosting box, dense shrubs or thicket, evergreens, brush or log pile, burrow, meadow, prairie, or water garden/pond. Places to raise young (Requires 2 of the following) – Mature trees, meadow or prairie, nesting box, wetland, cave, host plants for caterpillars, dead trees or snags, dense shrubs or thicket, water garden/pond, or burrow. Sustainable practices (Requires 2 of the following) – Soil and water conservation (riparian buffer, capture rain water from roof, drip or soaker hose for irrigation, limit water use, reduce erosion, use of mulch, and rain garden. Controlling exotic species (practice integrated pest management, remove non-native plants and animals, use of native plants, reduce lawn areas). Organic practices (eliminate chemical pesticides, eliminate chemical fertilizers, and composting). Once you have met the requirements, you fill out the online application, choose which type of sign you would like/pay for it (printed paper, printed plastic sign, hard sign, large sign, or rock with engraving). This was an exciting project and it made me realize that you can give back to the environment as well as make your yard/pond look nice. Don’t forget, ompetition for Highest Poin 2016 AHAP C ts !!! CASH PRIZES !!! This year the Aquatic Horticultural Award Program will continue to award those with the highest points turned in throughout 2016. The awards will be presented at the next holiday party in January of 2017. Any GPASI member in good standing can compete! AHAP rules can be found on the GPASI website, www.gpasi.org. First Place: Crystal Trophy and $100.00 Second Place: Framed Certificate and $50.00 Third Place: Framed5 Certificate and $25.00 Hottonia Palustris by Tim Gross Pronunciation: hot-TON-ee-a pal-US-triss Hottonia palustris is a gorgeous light green mid ground aquarium plant native to Europe, where it is unfortunately endangered and even extinct in many of its natural habitats. Unlike so many other plants we keep in our aquariums, this one prefers to stay completely submerged and will usually be found that way in the wild, with white inflorescences poking above the water column. It is not however, an obligate aquatic, and will grow emerged in short tight groupings in the mud when things get dry. In the aquarium it is best used as a hedge type mid ground plant. It will readily throw off side shoots when trimmed, forming a bright green bush with elegant pinnate leaves. To grow Hottonia palustris well, you’ll certainly want to supplement with nutrients and especially CO2. Low iron will quickly cause the growing tips to appear whitish and chalky, while temperatures above 80o F will produce smaller, somewhat sickly looking leaves. For best results, lighting should be at least moderately high as anything approaching the “medium” range will produce leggy stems and a plant that reaches for the light instead of a nice tight hedge as seen in many Dutch style tanks. 6 GPASI National / International Sponsors Amazonas Magazine www.amazonasmagazine.com New Era Aquaculture www.new-era-aquaculture.com Aqueon www.aqueonproducts.com Ocean Nutrition www.oceannutrition.com Cichlid News www.cichlidnews.com Paradigm Fish Foods www.paradigmfishfood.com Cobalt International www.cobaltaqauatics.com PlecoCaves www.plecocaves.com Coralife www.coralifeproducts.com PNT Aquatics www.pntaquatics.com Corydoras World www.CorydorasWorld.com Ray “Kingfish” Lucas & Kingfish Services www.kingfishservices.net Estes’ www.estesco.com SpectraPure www.spectrapure.com Hydor USA www.hydor.com/eng/hydor-usa.php San Francisco Bay Brand www.sfbb.com Repashy Superfoods www.store.repashy.com Ecological Laboratories, Inc. www.microbelift.com Fantastic Fins 734.464.3523 Seachem Laboratories www.seachem.com Frank’s Fish Net www.FranksFishNet.com Sera North America www.sera.de/us/home.html Hagen www.hagen.com Ecological Laboratories, Inc. www.microbelift.com Swiss Tropicals & Poret® Filter Foam www.swisstropicals.com Ken’s Fish www.kensfish.com Tetra www.tetra-fish.com Kent www.kentmarine.com United Pet Group www.unitedpetgroup.com Marineland www.marineland.com ZooMed Laboratories, Inc. www.zoomed.com Mellow Aquatics www.mellowaquatics.com That Fish Place www.thatpetplace.com Become a sponsor today!
