Slight contouring using powders to create gentle
shadows and soft luminosity to the skin is the look this
season. If customers need an example ask them to reflect
upon classic Hollywood starlets such as Lauren Bacall, or
for the younger generation, Natalie Portman. It is always
a good idea to visualise where to go with their chosen
look.
For this look suggest Revlon Beyond Natural Cream to
Powder Eye Shadow for a structured look. The shades
start out as a lightweight cream, and gently turn into a
powder upon application, for long-lasting wear. This is an
investment for customers as the four shades can be used
for all occasions – keep it softer for the day and darker for
the evening.
To create a sophisticated and feminine look,
recommend a brow pencil or a soft brown eye shadow to
fill in the eyebrows and give them definition and buff the
skin with Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Mineral Powder
for a natural luminous complexion. Suggest highlighting
the cheeks with a light natural looking bronzer to create a
powerful yet soft look such as Rimmel’s Natural Bronzer.
To create definition in the cheeks, advise your customers
to suck in their cheeks and apply the bronzer to the top of
the cheekbone and into the hairline and temples.
If the eyes are meant to be the windows to the soul then
the lips should be the door. Ask customers to add a tint
of colour with an autumn inspired shade to their lips for
a berry stain effect thus creating a defined matt look.
Always recommend smooth moist lips before applying any
lip stains. This can be achieved by preparing the lips with
a lip treatment or gently exfoliating with a toothbrush to
alleviate dry rough lips. Also make sure the lips have no
sticky product on them before applying the stain, as the
product will not provide adequate coverage to the lips.
Round off the sophisticated statement with a modern
take on ballerina hair, giving a crisp and contemporary
Suggest your customers evoke the woodlands and
leaves that inhabit our National Parks with Maybelline
Emerald Isle 4 colour eye shadow palette. They can
apply the lighter shade onto the lid, blend the medium
shade in a C-shape around the corners of the eyes and
in the crease and apply the darkest shade along the
lower lash line. Lastly, they can apply the lightest shade
or a vanilla toned eye shadow to the inner corner of the
eye and the brow bone. It is easy to create this soft and
misty green effect, which can bring out hazel or brown
eyes or cause a dramatic effect with blue eyes.
Two thick coats of mascara will intensify this look for
evening and for the day – one even application is all
it needs. Cheeks can be highlighted with a soft sheer
powder blush like Covergirl Cheekers blush in natural
shimmer or natural rose, and a soft pink nude look can
be given to the lips with YSL Rouge Volupte in sensual
silk, gently patted on to create a natural unstructured
look.
The hair for this look should be let down and kept
flowing and natural. To create natural beach hair,
customers should towel dry well so the hair is not too wet
and apply mousse into the palms and massage through
the hair. The scalp should be avoided so the hair stays
less oily longer. The hair should be separated into two
sections down the middle of the head and scrunched
together to make two knots on either side of the head. It
should dry naturally or, for those in a hurry blow-dried on
a low heat until dry. Once the hair is dry the knots can
be let out and the fingers run through the hair.
Soft and tonal hues play with colour to create a
dreamlike, almost Impressionist’s palette of delicate
beauty and effortless glamour.

Round off the sophisticated statement with a modern
take on ballerina hair, giving a crisp and contemporary
look for autumn. A classic bun modernised with texture
is simple, chic and easy to do. Firstly, blow dry the hair
straight or run irons through it so it looks sleek and has a
healthy looking shine. Slick back the hair into a ponytail
and separate into two sections, tie hair bands on each
section and twist each section the same way you would
to create a classic bun. Secure with bobby pins around
the bun and don’t worry if there are loose bits. It gives a
modern finish to the bun. Finish off with a strong hold
hair spray.
Nails are matt nudes and cement tones for hands and
feet. Essie nail polish in chinchilly and playa del platinum
makes for a striking yet sophisticated look.
Skin, hair and face colour can all take inspiration from
Mother Nature as she appears in autumn.
Suggest your customers evoke the woodlands and
leaves that inhabit our National Parks with Maybelline
Emerald Isle 4 colour eye shadow palette. They can
apply the lighter shade onto the lid, blend the medium
shade in a C-shape around the corners of the eyes and
in the crease and apply the darkest shade along the

season is inspired by the colours of vintage photographs. By Isabella Schimid.
Autumn look number 3:
These powdered tones of colour are less saturated than an
Impressionist’s painting and draw inspiration from autumn
fruits that highlight warm greys and sensual greens.
Complexion should be kept clean and natural with lightly
tinted foundations. A tinted moisturiser or mineral foundation
will give the skin the perfect finish. For a younger customer,
Nivea Visage Young Be Beautiful tinted moisturiser, and for
the customers who are concerned about anti ageing, Olay
Total Effects Touch of Foundation is the perfect product.
Blush colours range from dried petal tones to apricot and
can be worn up to the eyelids or used lightly to enhance the
hollow of the cheeks, giving a hint of colour to break the
monotone light of day. Cream blush is the best product to
achieve that natural contour. Customers should always begin
with a little product on the back of the hand, apply to cheeks
and slowly work the colour up until they have achieved the
perfect look they are after. Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cheek
Colour Cream Blush In Nectar and Maybelline Dream Mousse
Blush In Peach Satin will do the trick.
Eye make up can be mixed and matched with two or three
layers of colour that create a soft almost blur effect. Firstly,
users should begin with the application of a grey or green
toned eye shadow to the outer corner of the eye and under the
eye, then use a pink tone and blend onto the eye graduating
from the outer corner, blended well so you get this lovely
hint of colour and contour. Lastly comes the application of a
gold tone to the inner corner of the eye. L’Oreal Paris Studio
Secrets eye shadows are easy to blend and the colours work
well blended together or used alone. A single smudged line
of a coloured eye shadow along the top lash is another way
of adding that hint of warmth and colour to the eyes. Harsh
eye lines in the rim of the eye or around the eye should be
avoided. It’s all about soft blended colour. A single coat of
mascara is all that’s needed to complete this autumn eye
makeup appearance.
Blurry unstructured lips are the look for autumn. Lips should
be kept moist and undefined. Monochrome shades of apricot
and rose with matt warmth rather than a high shine gloss, are
the ticket. Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in nutmeg protects and
moisturisers the lips with that hint of colour.
Hair that is subtle and natural works best with this autumn
look. Suggest wearing chignons low at the nape of the neck or
up high for a simple style, and scrunch dry or add some loose
big curls to the hair first. The hair can be swept loosely into
a low side bun or up high, and tied with a hair band or bobby
pins to secure it. If your customer wants to make a change or
add colour, recommend subtle shimmering effects with gold
and copper highlights. For brown hair, draw inspiration from
falling leaves – Chestnut is the colour this season.
Fingers and toes will complete this autumn look with tones
of fig and grape. Suggest Essie nail polish in lacey not racey.
Autumn look number 4:
The look of the past blends nicely with the present,
creating a new but understated glamour with green and
grey eye shadows balanced by a burst of berry tones on
luscious lips.
A smoky Silver grey and dusty khaki green eye is
simple and modern. Suggest applying the grey or khaki
cream eye shadow (Rimmel metallic cream shadow
or Clinique Quick Eyes cream shadow) to the top and
bottom lash line. Blend the colour up to the socket and
slightly under the lash line. Applying multiple layers and
not blending too much will intensify the colour. Next
apply a translucent powder to set the cream shadow.
Black or dark grey eyeliner can be used in the upper and
lower rim of the eye and three luscious coats of mascara
top and bottom. It’s that simple to achieve and to add
intensity for evening customers can apply Elizabeth
Arden Eight Hour cream over the top of the cream
shadow (and no powdering) to create a shiny finish. No
harsh lines top or bottom of this eye makeup is needed
– depth and contour is created using the shadow itself.
Covergirl have a product called Smoky Shadow Blast,
a double-ended eye shadow pencil to make creating a
smoky eye even easier.
Strong defined brows are a must this season to
complete the look and create the confidence of the
autumn woman who is street smart and sassy, yet still
manages to capture a type of Brooke Shields sweetness
about her.
Juicy fruits will inspire a saturated red look to the lips.
Lipstick colours of deep red grapes and wild berries can
be used to create a satin stained effect, which can be
finished off with a lip pencil for a defined contoured
look. Rich creamy lipsticks like Revlon’s Super Lustrous
Lipstick have a huge range of red and mulberry tones.
Neutral toned nails complete the look with matte or
shiny pale green or grey-tinged blue nail polish. OPI have
over 200 fashionable modern colours and this season
Light My Sapphire, Here Today Aragon Tomorrow and
Russian Navy Matt are the colours to look for. Nails
should be kept short and slightly squared.
Wispy bobs will make a comeback with updated
sensual and soft waves or curls.
Another hair look inspired from runway to reality, can
be long and luscious with a smooth crown and wild,
crimp waves. Amber tints can add depth in tonal hues
and subtle highlights, mimicking the changing colours
throughout the season. Deep reds, prune and plums will
be the colours to look for this autumn/winter - a vivid and
harmonious statement that will compliment this season’s
make up trends.

which is also found naturally

Vitamin C complex
Famously linked to vitamin
pills and oranges, its goodness
is now found in beauty products,
too. Vitamin C is an antioxidant
that works to prevent free
radical damage. These are
volatile molecules so look for
a stabilised Vitamin C product
to help reinforce the skin’s own
defenses and prevent long-term
damage.
Squalene
Squalene is an organic, oil-free
moisturiser that occurs naturally
in the body. It can be derived
from olives and is an excellent
non-greasy moisturiser that
instantly softens
the skin and helps prevent cell
damage. It is also non-irritating and
non-comedogenic.
CoQ10 penetrates into skin cells to
boost skin repair and regeneration
and reduce free radical damage.
Antioxidants
Peptides
Antioxidants help protect skin
by combating free radicals,
which attack healthy skin cells
and collagen. This attack of the
skin’s vital structures can cause
damage, mutations, cell death
and inflammation, resulting in
lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone,
sensitivity and even cancers.
The science behind peptides
came from the discovery that when
collagen is damaged by sunlight it
is broken up into peptides. Certain
peptides formed were able to act as
a signal to skin cells to make new
collagen, meaning wrinkled skin
could be improved by fooling it into
thinking it had been damaged by
applying this peptide.
Peptides offer a way for the
skin to repair itself naturally and
can potentially trigger specific
things in the skin, so that they
might improve wrinkles, firmness or
age spots.
Ceramides
Ceramides are a type of skin lipid
that sit in the top layer of the skin
and work to lock in essential oils
and moisture. They are essential in
maintaining both the structure and
strength of the lipid matrix.
Stem Cells
Retinol
Skincare specialists are creating
specialised peptides and enzymes
that help stimulate the skin’s
storage of stem cells. It is
believed the skin contains a ratio
of approximately one in 10 to
one in 10,000 stem cells. These
specialised cells are dormant until
they receive signals from the body
to begin the repair mode. The use
of topical products stimulate the
stem cell to split into two types
of cells: a new, similar stem cell
and a ‘daughter’ cell. This stem
cell can receive the message to
create proteins, carbohydrates and
lipids to help repair fine lines and
wrinkles and restore and maintain
firmness and elasticity.
Retinol is a Vitamin A (retinoic
acid) derivative that is a safe,
effective and widely used
anti-ageing solution. Retinoids
encourage better cell turnover
in the upper layers, normalising
skin turnover.
Hexapeptide
This is a popular component
of anti-ageing products as it
acts on a similar principle to an
anti-wrinkle injection. It works
to relax muscles and reduce
stress in the skin for a more
plump, youthful appearance
and aims to smooth expression
lines and wrinkles.
Idebenone
Idebenone, respected for some
time as a pharmaceutical agent in
the form of a super antioxidant, is
now an ingredient in quality antiageing skincare products to help
prevent wrinkles. Idebenone protects
the skin from the elements and
reduces the appearance of fine lines,
reduces dryness and improves skin
texture.
Coenzyme Q10
CoQ10 occurs naturally in the
body, however, factors such as
stress, ageing and some medications
can lower the levels. In most people
over 30, levels of CoQ10 in the skin
are below optimum, resulting in less
ability to produce collagen, elastin
and other important skin molecules.

Furv, a yoga wear clothing company in Whistler,
Canada. Working closely with the owner of
the company to produce the logo (fun, free &
groovy). From the logo the catalogue & all other
advertising materials & in-store signage were
created using the same fun/free/groovy theme.
The idea behind the label was you feel naked
wearing fruv clothing.
Fruv was being launch during the 2010 Winter
Olympics, newspaper ads were created using
the snow & sport theme.
