With 10 freshmen on the new team, it took the majority of the season to become w hat the Cougars are typically known for…winning. The year ended in success though, as the Cougars won 10 of their last 12 appearances, claiming championships in both the prestigious Halloween Classic (2 years in a row) and the Big Bend Crossover tournament. "It was a growing year for us but I am really proud of the way the Cougars fought the entire year. Most teams would have given up, but this squad persevered and came out winners in the end. This should prove helpful in getting a great start for the 2006 season" said Coach Kathie Woods. Sami Hennessy and Jessica Heidenreich both made appearances in the Sophomore All-Star Game and Heather Gerke was twice named NWAACC Defensive Player of the Week. Hennessy and Rachel Gowen provided stellar performances all season and were selected to the Southern Region All-Star Team. In another top honor, freshman Margo W yatt was selected as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' College Player of the Year. Gowen's strong performances lead to her signing with the current NAIA Champions at California Baptist University next season while Heidenreich and Ashli Itami both received NCAA and NAIA scholarships to continue playing volleyball after Clackamas. 3 COACHES KATHIE WOODS AT CCC KATHIE WOODS :: HEAD COACH Year W-L-T Pct. 1995, 1996 & 2004 NWAACC Coach of the Year 2005 27-21 .563 2004 43-9 .827 This is Kathie’s 24th year at the helm of the Cougar volleyball program. In 1995, under Kathie’s direction, the program made major strides in becoming a perennial contender, compiling a 495-148 record, a 77 percent winning average. Being at the top of the league is something Cougar teams and fans have grow n accustomed to. The Cougars have brought home six Southern Region titles and two NWAACC Championships in 1996 and, most recently, in 2004. Post Season: NWAACC Champs 2003 30-6 .833 Post Season: NWAACC 2nd 2002 35-15 .700 Post Season: Qualified Overall 495– 148 .770* *since 1995 Kathie’s success as a coach eventually led to public speaking engagements on motivational techniques and team unity during the off season and she has since written a book entitled, The Honor of Coaching. In the Cougar Volleyball program Kathie stresses her philosophy in giving 100% in school, volleyball and life. Her athletes work hard at becoming not only better volleyball players, but also on character development and showing respect in all of life’s situations. Her team’s successes have led her to multiple NWAACC awards when she was selected Coach of the Year in 1995, 1996 and 2004. She has also been selected Southern Region Coach of the year in ’95, ’96, ’02 and 2004. A devout Christian, Kathie initiated the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter at Clackamas and last year was selected FCA College Coach of the Year for the Portland metropolitan area. She was also featured in the FCA’s national bi-monthly publication, STV (Sharing The Victory) in August 2006. Kathie got involved with sports at a young age and accelerated at every sport she participated. As a multi-sport athlete, she was always known for her poise, intelligence and confidence on the court and field. She competed at state and some regional level competition in tennis, softball, racquetball and volleyball. Kathie also earned state medals in table tennis and competed against Judy Bochenski, a member of the USATT Hall of Fame. Her successes in softball and volleyball eventually led to her playing for Oregon State University’s Volleyball squads during the 1974-76 seasons. She also competed in Softball at OSU during the 1974-75 season. After college competition, Kathie turned her love for sports towards coaching and teaching. She taught swimming for over 20 years and continues to teach racquetball as well as professional course work, first aid and CPR. Her first collegiate coaching assignment was with Linn-Benton Community College during the ’81-82 season. In 1983, she moved to the Oregon City area and became Volleyball Head Coach at Clackamas. A dynamic individual, Kathie also serves on the NWAACC’s Executive Board, Volleyball Committee and she is an Athletic C ommissioner for the league. She also coordinates and directs Clackamas’ Intramural Sports activities. Kathie hails from Dallas, Oregon where she graduated from Dallas High School in 1974. She holds a Master of Education (1981) and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Administration (1978) from Oregon State University. 4 COACHES Lindsay Schiely :: Head Assistant This is Lindsay’s first season as a Cougar coach, but she has been very involved with coaching camps, clinics and private lessons during the off-season the last several years. Lindsay’s Cougar roots runs deep. Lindsay played for the Cougars during the 02-03 and 03-04 seasons and led the team to a combined 65-21 record, a Southern Region Championship and NWAACC 2nd place finish in 2003. Lindsay had a stellar college career receiving both NWAACC Academic All-American and Volleyball All-American while at Clackamas. She then achieved all-academic honors and was twice a first team all-league selection at NCAA Div II, Eastern New Mexico. ESPN the Magazine also selected Lindsay to the All-Academic District 6 First Team in her sophomore year at ENMU. Lindsay holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Eastern New Mexico University and an AAOT from Clackamas CC in 2004. She is a 2002 graduate of Reynolds HS. Casie Hulden :: Assistant Coach Casie has been a long time assistant coach with Kathie since 1998. A defensive specialist, she was member of the 1994-95 Cougar teams and served as team captain for the 1995 Southern Region Champions. The ‘95 team had an amazing 45-9 season record and finished 4th overall in the NWAACC. Casie then went on to play for Southern Oregon University , where once again her skills and leadership qualities led to her assignment as the 1997 Raider’s team captain. Casie graduated from SOU with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Science and earned her AAOT from Clackamas in 1996. She is a 1994 graduate of Aloha High School. She now works full time as a Project Manager at Integrated Services Inc. Nels Norquist :: Assistant Coach This is Nels’ second season with the Cougars and he develops the team’s front line blocking skills. Nels’ played club ball for the Western Oregon University team from 2001-03 and now plays club ball in Portland during the winter. He also coaches Canby High School freshman team and Canby club ball since 2004. During the summer, Nels is very active playing both grass and sand volleyball. Nels holds a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Science Education from Western Oregon University, 2006 and an AA degree from Clackamas in 2001. Nels is a graduate of Canby High School in 1998. Michelle Boeckman :: Assistant Coach A CCC alumna, Michelle completed a standout career with the Cougars. Along side Head Assistant Lindsay Schiely, she helped to guide the Cougars to the 2003 NWAACC Southern Division championship and a second place overall finish at the NWAACC Tournament, earning all-league honorable mention honors. She completed her amateur volleyball career at NCAA Div II, University of Alaska Anchorage where she was one of the leaders for the Seawolves. Michelle also had an outstanding prep career at Canby High School, earning first team all-league honors as a junior and senior for the Pac-9 Conference back-to-back champions. Her career goal is to become a emergency room nurse and has returned to CCC to complete the nursing program. Once she obtains her two-year RN, Michelle will work towards her bachelor's degree. 5 2006 OUTLOOK COUGAR VOLLEYBALL - RELOADED! A Championship Run Possible in 2006! The Cougars are excited about a fresh new start for 2006. Last year our character was tested and I believe we passed the test. We certainly were much improved from the start of the year and it took hard work and dedication to improve the way be did by year’s end (winning 10 of our last 12 matches and two tournaments). This year, though, we are starting much stronger, with the strength and experience of five returning Cougars from the 2005 squad. Returning strong for the Cougars is sophomore outside hitter Meggan Chapin, who played much of her freshmen year injured. Meggan has worked hard at her rehab and has come back in top shape with her textbook-perfect jumping form. Also much stronger and healed is middle blocker Aubrey Schneider, a red-shirt sophomore from the 2005 season. Aubrey had struggled the entire year, getting over injuries, but things are looking positive for the stellar athlete as she continues her climb back to all-star status. Aubrey is a born leader and is working hard to get her team back to the championships. Also returning for the Cougars are defensive standouts Jami Duhrkoop and Heather Gerke. These two ladies have put in extra hours, competing against each other, to make each other stronger and the entire team more competitive. Both are defensive stars that are capable of leading any team on defense and bring back the reputation that Clackamas has in their defense. They are extremely exciting to watch! Rounding out the returnees is outside hitter and all-around player, Margo Wyatt. Margo is one serious Cougar in her endeavor to help bring the team back to Championship status. The recruiting class joining the Cougar lineup is spectacular!! You can view what each of them brings to the program in the player bios area of this guide. When you have several athletes that dominated in high school and other colleges around the nation joining an already strong nucleus, the outcome can be huge for this program!! Standouts such as twotime 4A All-State OH Rhea Wortman bring that excitement. Others, such as experienced and dynamic setter Malia Kamahoahoa, quick and clever setter Carla Crowder, and dedicated and committed outside hitter Carley Johnson … when these young ladies join Holly Coutts, Kara McGinty, and Sarah Hall….this creates a synergistic effect that will be DAN GEROUS. For those of you who do not know what a synergistic effect is, I will tell you… It is “when two or more things (or experienced athletes) combine together to form a more potent, powerful, NEW thing (or TEAM)!! That is what we are about this year…forming a new team that is powerful---using the philosophy that we have always had (giving 100% in school, volleyball and life) to get there and knowing that “The Heart of a Champion Lies Within” , we are ready…OK… I will say it…Ready to RRROOAAARRRRRRR… Here we go…hang on for another wild ride to the top! Her tight defensive play earned her a selection as a Cougar Player of the Week. Jami always plays with intensity and is a vocal leader for the team. #1 Sophomore :: Libero/DS Estacada, Oregon Estacada HS High School Highlights Jami was selected as a 3A Tri-Valley League All-League defensive specialist in 2004. Her volleyball honors include First Team All-League in both Canby HS her junior and senior years, named 2005 Pac 9 Player of the Year and earned Second Team All-State honors in 2005. Carla was selected the Oregonian Athlete of the week in 2003, and was voted her team's MVP. She was a 4A Midwestern League Eugene, Oregon Second Team All-League selection. She is a 3-year varsity athlete North Eugene HS in volleyball and lettered in tennis for the Highlanders. Holly was voted the team MVP and best offensive player in 2004 and 2005. She earned Second Team All-League honors in the Tri-Valley league. She was also selected as Fellowship of Christian Athletes Dufur HS (FCA) , Portland Area College Player of the Year for her achievements both on the court and off. Margo was heavily involved wit h the Clackamas CC Associated Study Body in 2005-06 and is currently serving as ASB Vice President for 2006-07 school year. #5 High School Highlights Captain for her state championship volleyball squad. 2005 1A All-State selection in Basketball. An excellent student, She received a Scholar Athlete award in 2004 and the Distinguished Scholarship Award in 2006. She also won Mountain View Coaches’ Award for outstanding team play in 2004. #7 Sarah Hall Freshman :: MB/RS Vancouver, Wash ington Mountain View HS Sarah began playing club ball at Nike NW Volleyball Club in 2005 and then suited up for Bridgetown Volleyball Club in 2006. She spent her high school years playing at Oregon City and Canby, receiving many honors and awards for her court performances. A 2001 PAC-9 All-Star and Second Team 4A All-State hitter, Malia brings in a wealth of experience, solid fundamentals and a level of maturity that the Lady Cougars will surely benefit from. Played club ball for Webfoot Juniors in 2001-2003 and Strormin’ West in 2004-2006. She was a two-time 4A First Team All-State selection and Crook County HS—Eastern the Intermountain Conference Player of the Year in 2004 and New Mexico University 2005. Rhea was also twice selected to the State All-Tournament team in '03 and '04 and represented Crook County in the 2005 Miss Oregon Scholarship Program. At ENMU, Rhea played in all 105 games for the Zias and Made the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll. Her strong play lead to being Prineville, Oregon named Cougar Player of the Week on two occasions, Southern Crook County HS Region Player of the Week twice and was a two-time NWAACC Defensive Player of the Week. #11 High School Highlights Heather was selected to the 2004 4A Intermountain Conference First team All-League as a Libero. She played for Eastern Oregon University in 2004 and joined the Cougars in 2005, but had to red-shirt due to an injured knee. She is back in prime condit ion for 2006. #13 Sophomore :: MB Estacada, Oregon Estacada HS—Eastern Oregon University Aubrey was a First Team All-State and Oregon's 2003 3A Player of the Year in volleyball. She was also a First Team All-League and a State Tournament First Team selection in 2003. In 2002, she made her first appearance on the 3A All-State team. Since becoming a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) in 1984, the Cougars have been leaders in every sport--winning 23 northwest titles. Clackamas proudly represents the best in Oregon athletics, competing in the highly competitive Southern Region--a division entirely comprised of Oregon community colleges. As a full-time Clackamas student, you have the opportunity to participate in any of the sports available at Clackamas, including men's baseball, women's softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track, women's volleyball, women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, and wrestling. In keeping with the standards of the program, emphasis is put on academic progress as well as athletic opportunity. Team travel, uniform s, and health insurance are provided. Athletic Program Philosophy Intercollegiate Athletics are a part of the comprehensive educational program offered by Clackamas Community College. They are sanctioned by the Board and are expected to offer the same kind of general services that any other areas of the College offers. Athletics, whether individual or team sports, help students while they are in college and prepare them for life experiences. They are of value to individuals in terms of enhanced physical and mental well-being; enjoyment derived from participation; ambition and pride, which arise from sporting endeavor; and friendship and sharing, which often accompany participation in sports. In addition, many individuals, while competing in athletics, increase their awareness of other available educational program s. It is possible that many doors will open to those who participate in Intercollegiate Athletics. Physical Education and Health Instruction, Professional Athletics, Coaching, Training, Recreational Fields, Sports Writing or Broadcasting, and Promotion or Publicity may be areas of interest to students who have participated in athletics at Clackamas Community College. They may also use their community college experience to mature and improve before moving to a higher level of competition. Along with services to individuals, a good athletic program also offers services to its school, community, and district. The morale of an entire college and areas can be enhanced by performances in athletics. Public recognition of the services the institution offers often comes through initial contact with student/athletes who represent the College. Thus, athletics at Clackamas Community College are clearly within the total philosophy of the College and do provide opportunities for many students to reach their desired goals.
