Studbook population. 3. Locations. 4. Births. 5. Imports. 6. Deaths. 7. Transfers. 8. Discussion and activities planned for 2006. Introduction and activities 2004 and 2005. Reproduction within the studbook turned out to be very successful for three out of four studbook participants. From location Van der Sluys no reproduction was reported. During 2004 and 2005 forty eight births are reported. 3.3 (6) adults reproduced. With the exception of the 32 animals born in 2005 at location Winkler all juveniles were transferred to privates within Europe. Out of these 32 captive born at location Winkler in 2005 four did not survive and died shortly after birth (see chapter “Deaths”). For all 52 transferred young animals CITES-permits were issued by both the Dutch and Belgium authorities. For further information on births see chapter “Births”. From all four studbook participants no information was received of any health problems neither of the adults nor of the captive born specimens. The new recipients will be asked to report on the well being of the captive born specimens. 2. Studbook population. By the birth of 39 specimens at the locations Winkler (25) and Van Hellem (14) in 2004 the total studbook population on December 31, 2004 was 8.6.39 specimens. The living studbook population also was 8.6.39 specimens. By the birth of 45 specimens at the locations Winkler (32) and Gillissen (13) in 2005 the total studbook population increased to 8.6.84 specimens. Recent report of the determined sexes of a part of the juveniles the exact studbook population at December 31, 2004 increased to 22.22.9 specimens. By the birth of 45 specimens during 2005 at location Winkler (32) and Gillissen (13) the total population at December 31, 2005 was 29.28.41 (98) specimens. The total living population at December 31, 2005 is 29.28,37 (94) specimens. 3. Locations. By the transfer of the 2004 and 2005 transferred specimens from the locations Winkler, Van Hellem and Gillissen to privates the total studbook participants increased to 18. These new studbook participants are living in seven different countries; The Netherlands (6), Belgium (3), Germany (3), Denmark (2), Schotland (1), Italy (2), France (1). 3 4. Births. In 2004 39 specimens are born at the locations Winkler (25) and Van Hellem (14). The sexes of the babies was 13.12 at location Winkler and 1.4.9 at location Van Hellem. From location van Hellem no exact information is currently known regarding this. In 2005 45 specimens are born at the locations Winkler (32) and Gillissen (13). The sexes of these babies are not yet determined at location Winkler; at location Gillissen the sex ratio was 7.6. Birth at location Winkler. 13 Newly born animals at location Gillissen. 4 5. Imports. During 2004 and 2005 no imports into the studbook are reported. The birth of 84 specimens can be considered as new entries into he studbook. 6. Deaths. As reported above all adults are in good health. In 2004 all neonates born at the two locations proved to be healthy. Of the 32 born animals at location Winkler four died shortly after birth. The dead snakes are offered to a Dutch veterinary institute for post mortem research. No results are know at present. 7. Transfers All 52 juveniles born in 2004 and 2005 from the locations Winkler (25), Van Hellem (14) and Gillissen (13) are transferred to 14 new participants within the studbook. These 14 participants are divided over The Netherlands (2), Belgium (3), Germany (3), Denmark (2), France (1), Italy (2), Schotland (1). All relevant information of these 14 new participants are registered in the studbook administration. 8. Discussion and activities planned for 2006. The 8.6 (14) founder animals are a donation by the Jersey Zoo to the ESF studbook. A condition to this donation was restraint in breeding with these snakes. Reason for this was that the EEP population, managed by the EAZA institute Tournai Zoo/Museum in Belgium, already held a large number of Jersey born animals, and a large total number of animals in general. Further excessive reproduction of the species in Europe was not desired. Unfortunately this condition was expressed by the Jersey Zoo when the newly aimed ESF participants were already approached, and CITES paper work was already set in motion. With the four recipients of the 14 Jersey adult snakes an agreement was proposed by the studbook keeper, and then fully agreed by all four recipients. The offspring could be sold to privates, and a certain percentage of the “profit” would be donated to a later to be determined conservation project for the endangered Jamaican boa on Jamaica itself. The studbook participants were free to determine the selling price of the offspring and a 60/40 % dividing was agreed indicating 60% for the breeder and 40% for the project. This all in consideration of the selling price. Not all participants demanded the same price. The prices within the private snake keepers sector is fluctuating and highly depending on supply and demand. All four initial studbook recipients are thanked for their willingness and voluntarily contribution. 5 The total amount of money disposable for the Jamaican boa project is recently fixed at 2300 Euro. With this European Studbook Foundation initiative private snake keepers/breeders make a contribution towards an in situ project for an endangered species, and in this case a species they work with in captivity. During 2006 it will be determined on which project the money will be spent on. 2004 and 2005 were successful regarding reproduction. The ESF-studbook population increased from 14 founder animals to 98 specimens. With the increase of also the number of participants from 4 to 18 divided over 7 European countries the management will become more difficult, and it will be taken into account that a number of animals will become lost for the studbook. The question is how motivated participants will remain when it appeared to be difficult to sell their offspring, and what is more important: are they able to sell them for a “reasonable price”? Second not unimportant reason for perhaps difficult tracking of the offspring is the difference in putting into practice of CITES regulations. For all 84 captives CITES permits were issued. The Belgium CITES authorities for instanced demanded on the permits that within one year the young snakes had to be micro-chipped; it is uncertain whether all new owners will do that or not. It will be a responsible studbook coordinators job to continuously staying in touch with all studbook participants. In the Netherlands very soon a meeting will take place between the European Studbook Foundation board and the CITES authorities. Important issue on the agenda will be the identification of individual reptiles and amphibians in relation to CITES regulations regarding EU-certificates. Second studbook activity will be the improvement of the cooporation with the EAZA EEP for Epicrates subflavus. By proper management of both studbook populations and exchange of specimens by the two organisations EAZA and ESF it must be possible to assure a healthy ex situ European population.
