80 Years of Serving Through Innovation
Hydraulic System
Hagedorn has been the farmer’s partner for over 85 years. Since 1990 we
have led the box-spreader industry with innovative designs for a changing
marketplace. In recent years that marketplace has changed more quickly than
ever before.
Flow Control
Buying a manure spreader used to be a matter of ruggedness, reliability, good
performance and, above all, economy. Today it’s about spreading performance.
Twenty-five years ago, Hagedorn responded to the marketplace with simple
reliable, economical machines. Our industry-leading frames, hydraulic systems,
beaters and drivetrains set the standard others attempted to follow. Our Series
II models introduced stepped beater configurations to hydraulic-push platforms
and set the standard for spreading performance for horizontal beater machines.
You needed more: more spread width to reduce the number of passes on your
fields; axle and tire designs to reduce soil compaction; more processing of
the manure for easier incorporation and better nutrient uptake; more control of
application rates for maximum nutrient usage and minimum environmental impact.
We created the solution.
Hagedorn delivers the spreading performance you need with the ruggedness and
reliability to keep you in the field.
Hagedorn manure spreaders use a custom designed flow control valve for precise
control of unloading and application. Engineered and manufactured exclusively for
Hagedorn, the valve works well with all types of hydraulic systems and includes an
internal bypass for quick return regardless of unloading speed.
All 5000 series and 8000 series Extraverts are standard-equipped with a sequencing
valve. This feature is integrated into the flow-control valve and prevents the push-gate
from engaging before the endgate is raised, preventing accidental damage due to a
collision. The sequencing valve is available as an option on horizontal beater models.
Flow controls are designed by our own engineering staff to work with all modern
hydraulic systems and are manufactured by a reputable North American manufacturer.
Hoses & Fittings
All hoses and fittings are industry standard SAE (O-ring) or JIC (37 degree flare) fittings.
There are no pipe threads. All hoses and fittings are rated for 3500 PSI operation.
Machines are supplied with poppet style ISO male tips from reputable North American
suppliers such as Parker and Safeway.
Rubber hoses eliminate the corrosion problems that can destroy steel lines and, in the
event of damage, can be easily replaced without ordering special parts.
Cylinders
Push-off cylinders, like our flow controls, are designed by our own engineering staff
and manufactured by a reputable North American manufacturer.
Our hollow-rod design (an industry first in 1990) allows oil flow for extend and retract
cycles to be channelled through the rod eliminating the tangle of hoses that would
otherwise be involved when the cylinder strokes.
The cylinders use a rugged, ball-type sealing system that easily handles the flexing
that is inevitable with stroke lengths up to 17 feet. Pistons and glands are high-grade
ductile iron for maximum wear and durability.
For horizontal beater models and 5000 series Extraverts we use industry standard
tie-rod cylinders on the endgate. Extravert model 8610 uses welded-construction
endgate cylinders.

Focus on Power Train
Powertrain
Bearings
Our drivetrain is designed to be easy to maintain and service. In the 1970s, Hagedorn
pioneered the use of splined shafts for high-horsepower snow blowers. Today, every
shaft connection on a Hagedorn spreader is a splined connection. Splines transmit
power efficiently by spreading loads to the entire shaft (unlike keyed drives that focus
the load on a single stress point). Splines can be quickly and easily assembled and
disassembled.
The life of a bearing is, in most cases, determined by the quality of its seals.
Hagedorn uses bearings with triple-lip seals. These seals have been proven in
tillage and planting equipment. Pillow block units with triple-lip seals were created
especially for Hagedorn: another industry first. Our bearings are lifetime-lubricated,
assuring long life and eliminating bearing maintenance. All Hagedorn bearings have
an extended inner race with double set screws. Hagedorn uses premium bearings
from NTN and Peer.
PTO Shafts: Horizontal Beater and Extravert 5000 Series
Hagedorn uses only Walterscheid PTO shafts. The heart of our PTO is its splined
telescoping members. Ordinary shafts have two, three, or at best, four driving
surfaces. Our splined shaft has 20 driving surfaces. Horizontal beater models are
protected by a shear-bolt clutch. Extraverts use a cam-style cutout clutch.
PTO Shafts: Extravert Model 8610
Every Hagedorn manure spreader uses a Walterscheid PTO. For 8610 we chose
the smooth, quiet performance of CV joints. Like its 5000 series cousins 8610 is
protected by a cam-style cutout clutch. Bring the machine to a stop. Remove the
obstruction. Restart the machine. No bolts to replace. No tools required.
Bearing Housings
Ductile iron pillow blocks are the standard for Hagedorn. These virtually indestructible
units are built to withstand heavy loads and impacts that would shatter ordinary
grey-iron housings. For the input shaft, we demanded split housings that would allow
the shaft to be removed from the machine quickly and easily without removing the
bearings from the shaft. When no suitable housing was available we designed and
manufactured our own so we could continue our commitment to a simple, easy to
service spreader.
Over-running clutch: Extravert Models
Heavy beaters rotating at high speed pack a lot of inertia and can cause a lot of
damage if brought to a sudden stop. To protect your tractor and the drivetrain of your
spreader we have equipped every Extravert with an over-running clutch which allows
the beaters to coast to a stop without undue stress.
Shafts
To get the power to the beaters we nestled our input shaft within the frame where it is
safe from external damage. Shafts are 1045 steel, precision ground for straightness,
uniformity and precise bearing fit. Our unique split housings allow the shaft to be
removed from the machine without pulling the bearings from the shaft.
Gearboxes
To meet our high standards for strength and durability in gearboxes we went to Comer
for our horizontal beater models and Berma for our Extravert models—both worldclass manufacturers.

Frame Construction
The frame is the heart and backbone of a manure spreader. Our frames combine
structural tubes, formed sections and structural channels to achieve great strength
and maintain the flexibility that is required in a large mobile platform.
Manure unloads and spreads more evenly when the load is packed. Hagedorn
platforms use large-profile formed sections, closely spaced, to carry heavy loads
and withstand the forces of packing.
Our customers told us they wanted a spreader that is strong enough to use as a
push-off trailer without worrying about sidewall strength. Our frames are designed
to support the sides without bulky horizontal members and without relying on the
beaters to tie things together.
Our hitch configurations, axle designs and weight distribution are the best in
the industry. Axle frames are bolted, not welded, to the main frame. It’s good
construction and, in the event of damage, the axle is easily removed for repair.
6
Galvanized Components
Hot-dip galvanized steel has been effectively used since the mid 1800’s to prolong the
life of building and machine components.
Hydra-Spread uses galvanizing to protect the end-gate, push-gate and beater pan of
selected models.
Immersing the welded assembly in molten zinc ensures total protection. Because the
process takes place at 700 degrees F the zinc is literally welded to the steel. Inside
surfaces of structural tubes, seams, overlapped components—all are completely
covered by a protective layer of zinc.
All of this protection comes at a small price. Because the metal is heated to
700 degrees F there is some, unavoidable, shape distortion in the sheet metal
components—a small price for years of extra component life.

Axles and Tires
Poly Boards
Soil Compaction & Tire Selection
Hagedorn’s poly boards meet all the requirements for a material that is strong,
flexible, resistant to environmental degradation and very slippery.
A typical healthy soil consists of approximately 50% soil particles (sand, silt,
clay) with the remaining 50% taken up with air and water.
Our full-length boards and flush-head fasteners make a smooth, obstruction-free
surface for easy unloading.
Compaction limits the soil’s ability to store, and restricts the movement of,
air and water. This results in poor seedling vigour, poor plant growth and,
ultimately, reduced yields.
Individual tongue & groove boards make an almost watertight box and, in the
event of damage, are easy and inexpensive to replace.
Being plastic (high-density polyethylene), the boards expand and contract with
temperature changes. Our frame design and bolting procedure allow the boards
to expand and contract freely without undue stress to either boards or frame.
There are many causes for soil compaction - some natural, some caused by
cultural practices. We will focus on vehicle-induced compaction.
Vehicle induced compaction can be divided into two types – shallow and deep.
Shallow Compaction
Shallow Compaction is defined as compaction within the normal tillage zone
(5” to 10”) and is related to pressure applied to the surface of the soil. Higher
ground pressures cause increased shallow compaction. It should be noted that
ground pressure is approximately equal to tire inflation pressure.
Operators can minimize shallow compaction by using low-pressure flotationtype tires with a large footprint. Hydra-Spread offers low-pressure flotation-type
tires for all models.
Deep Compaction
Deep Compaction is defined as compaction that occurs below the normal tillage
zone and is generally related to total axle load. Deep compaction is not mitigated
by tire size or inflation pressure unless ground pressure (tire inflation pressure)
is reduced to 12 psi or lower. Deep compaction can be reduced or avoided by
sharing the total load across more than one axle.
Soil compaction is a complex subject. There are many excellent websites. (Just
search for “soil compaction”)
Please contact Hagedorn for detailed information about how to minimize soil
compaction and make your Hagedorn spreader easier to tow by using lowpressure flotation-type tires.

Hydra-Spread Series II Horizontal Beater Models
Stepped Beaters
Hydra-Spread’s stepped beaters spread finer, wider and more uniformly than traditional
stacked beaters.
Conventional beater configuration, for hydraulic-push machines, places the upper beater
directly above the main beater. In some conditions, manure from the upper part of the
load can break away and tumble into the lower beater before it reaches the upper beater
causing a light/heavy/light spread pattern.
Hydra-Spread’s stepped beater design moves the upper beater forward so manure is
removed before it can tumble. The result is a more uniform spread pattern.
Stepped beaters throw better. With traditional beater placements the upper beater blocks
the path of each beater has a clear path to throw manure farther and more uniformly.
RipGrip beater paddles are designed with an aggressive shape to rip the manure and
hold onto it for a fraction of a second. The result is a spread pattern that puts manure
behind the spreader rather than into the air.
Stepped beater configurations and RipGrip paddles are standard on every Hydra-Spread
horizontal beater machine.
Uneven coverage
and flaking
Consistent Spreading
Traditional beater configuration allows flaking and
uneven distribution. Series II upper beater is placed
forward removing material before it can flake, resulting
in a more consistent distribution.
The longest lasting, best performing, most servicable
horizontal beater manure spreader your money can buy.

Extravert
Hagedorn is the recognized leader in hydraulic push-off technology. For vertical
beaters we went to BERMA, a world leader in vertical beater design. The natural
result of blending two leading technologies is a new industry leader. Extravert
delivers performance and control to maximize the nutrient value of your manure.
To ensure optimum performance, our engineering team worked with BERMA
engineers to “beef up” their basic beater designs to better suit harsh North
American conditions.
Our beaters are everything you would expect from a company whose sole purpose
is designing and building beater systems. Closely-spaced spirals and overlapping beater tips mean more contact with the manure for finer processing and
better distribution. Unlike apron-type spreaders, which have a dead spot for apron
clearance, spirals on a Hagedorn spreader go all the way to the bottom of the
beater. An impeller, at the bottom of each beater, further ensures good distribution
of fine materials and semi-solids.
Paddle configurations are a combination of blades to slice through tough materials
and cups to fling finer materials and semi-solids. Even corn and bean stalks are
shredded to an indistinguishable fineness.
Beaters can be customized with any combination of cups and knives. For even
more durability in high-usage applications or abrasive materials we offer forged
and hardened components. We’ve even created custom components for specific
applications. What can we do for you?

The Industry Leader – That’s Hard to Follow
Leading the way for 25 years, Hagedorn has been continually refining and redefining the way farmers handle the spreading of solid manure. Long before others were talking
about the value of manure, Hagedorn was building machines that treated manure as a resource, not a waste product.
Extravert brings together the proven Hagedorn hydraulic-push platform with the spreading performance of BERMA vertical beaters. The result is a rugged, reliable machine
with controllable, measurable and repeatable performance. See it in action online.
