December, 2014 – January, 2015
Message from our Head of School
Dear Robinson Parents;
This December/January newsletter is a celebration of a wonderful first
semester at Robinson. In the pages that follow you will read and see pictures
of the numerous activities we experienced over the course of the last four
months. The summer renovations combined with the shooting of the Disney
movie in August seem to have launched us on an extremely eventful year.
And the exciting events keeping coming this Friday afternoon and evening with the Magical
Christmas Tree Lighting along with a host of other activities including the nativity scene,
music, crafts, dinner and our first Elementary School Art Exhibit this year. The rest of
December, as you will see in the pages that follow, is our normal furry of activities as we
approach Christmas Break.
January 8th and 9th will be Professional Development days for the Faculty as we focus on
both IB and Landmark training sessions. Then, as classes begin again, I want to alert you to
our Parent Coffee on our second day of school in January -- Tuesday, the 13th at 7:30 am in
the Auditorium. Although our focus will be on the transition from Elementary to Middle
School and the IB Middle Years Program, I will also be highlighting our progress on our
Strategic Plan and, more specifically, what we envision for second semester, our Summer
Programs and the 2015 -2016 school year. I hope that you will make every effort to attend.
As we look towards the second semester and the New Year, I also want to call your
attention to some new pricing alternatives in the Cafeteria on Page 2 of this Newsletter.
As always, we try to hear and address any concerns parents have so that Robinson remains
the best possible educational setting for your children.
Debbie joins me in wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year!
Warm regards,
Dan

Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that December is here and January just around the corner. The next three weeks
will be busy and full of fun and enriching activities for all of us. Teachers have planned many
activities that will allow our students to become better inquirers, acquire essential skills for each
content area, develop conceptual understanding and demonstrate and maintain positive attitudes
towards learning and taking responsible actions.
As we continue to focus on quality instruction and meeting the needs of our students, we ask that
you also help remind your children to work hard and put forth their best to end the year strong and
ready for their return in January with the same commitment. I ask that upon your return in January,
you do not forget the importance of establishing a daily school year routine with your children. Get
your child to bed early on school nights, always have your child start the day with a healthy
breakfast, emphasize good study habits and make sure to set out to school on time. Establishing
these routines at home will show your child from an early age that school is a priority.
As we close out the year 2014, I want to thank you all for working with us to develop and maintain a
strong home-school connection and partnership. I look forward to 2015 and all the successes and
challenges it will bring. Our number-one focus is your children and, rest assured, we are committed
to doing our best on their behalf.
I wish you all many blessings and a healthy and happy 2015!
Warm regards,
Cindy
Quick note to parents: Over the holiday recess, I recommend that you read more about the
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. It will allow you to better understand what
your children are learning in school and to become part of this enormously enriching new aspect of
the educational lives of your children. Check the website www.ibo.org or search on the Internet for
“IB PYP for parents.” You will see an amazing world with which your children are being enriched
here at Robinson School. And much of the information is also available in Spanish and French.

Notes from Middle School Division Head, Enid Camacho
As we read this quote, we think about how much our Middle
School has changed in the past year. As teachers participate in IB-MYP
training and students are exposed to the new philosophy, our
students will experience more active, engaging lessons. Lessons away
from textbooks, memorization and facts, replaced by more opportunities to develop skills that will challenge their creativity and curiosity
and will invite them to go beyond expectations to make differences
in their school, community and their world and become life-long
learners.
In English classes they have been exploring different genres, learning
about authors as well as their feelings and purpose as students learn about
past events that marked history and how they influenced events today. Ninth-grade students wrote letters to
Hitler to give the victims of the Holocaust a voice. In eighth grade, The Outsiders, helped students understand and
break down common stereotypes. The seventh graders, through Family Stories, created a family story to pass on
to future generations.
In Math, students have been applying math concepts by creating real life problem situations and exploring
different procedures to find solutions that could be applied to real life events.
In Technology, students have been using 2.0 Floor Planner, to redesign the computer lab and promote
collaboration among students. Through this project students are being exposed to design concepts and skills that
will help them explore future careers in design engineering or architecture. Others have been preparing
brochures and tour guides in which they present facts that represent the historical importance of Puerto Rico.
During Assemblies students have been presenting topics such as promoting peace and how to eradicate poverty
among other global issues.
The Fine Arts department has offered students with genuine opportunities to promote creativity and selfexpression through their art exhibition with its theme Art of the Ancient World where students learned more
about the Egyptians and the Ancient World. The Youth Thespian Troupe led by our drama teacher and in
collaboration with our librarian, has been working on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to present dramatic
readings to students and set the stage for Christmas. In the weeks to come students will be finishing their own
masks and theater shoeboxes for their presentations next semester.
During this week, our semi-annual Book Fair in the Elementary Library continues to promote reading among
youngsters for the upcoming reading challenges next year while also offering some more leisurely reading as they
wrap up the year and get ready for final assessments. Next semester the Middle School will be inviting 6th grade
students to participate more actively as they get to know about activities they will be part of next year. They will
begin to visit assemblies once a month and have a chance to sit in on a class with the seventh graders. We will
also have our first IB-MYP consultant’s visit and will continue to explore ways to expand the IB-MYP curriculum to
other grades. Some departments are already planning activities to present during their special week and clubs
such as Forensics, Oratoria and Model UN begin to warm up for their competitions.
In summary, many amazing things are happening in Robinson’s Middle School where students have diverse
activities that teach them valuable lessons and create positive experiences as they develop skills to succeed in
years to come. Beautiful Things are coming -- an endless number of possibilities!

Secondary School Robotics Championship!
At Robinson we don’t graduate ROBOTS …
Our students BUILD robots and win
championships doing it! Here’s another one!
Robinson Robotics started the 2014-15 season with great success. The first Technology Challenge
took place from November 21 to 23, 2014 at the Juan ‘Pachín’ Vicens Auditorium in Ponce. More than
80 teams from across the Island competed in four categories: Middle School Rookie, Middle School
Advanced, High School Rookie and High School Advanced.
The Robinson Robotics Team members are:
Middle School Advanced: Ricardo Ortiz, Sebastian Pons
High School Advanced: Jessie Moore. Kai Roehrbein
Manuel Rosado
Our team not only excelled but positioned itself as
representing one of the top robotics programs on the
island. In the Middle School Advanced category, we
won the Tournament Runner-up (2nd Place) in alliance
with Ponce’s Caribbean School as well as the prestigious
Design Award, described as being “… presented to a
team that demonstrates an organized and professional
approach to the design process, project and time
management and team organization.” In the High
School Advanced category (the most challenging
category in the Technology Challenge), our team won
the highest prize awarded in the competition, the
Excellence Award, defined as “…the highest award
presented in the VEX Robotics Competition. The
recipient of this award is a team that exemplifies overall
excellence in building a well-rounded VEX robotics
program. This team excels in many areas and is a
shining example of dedication, devotion, hard work and
teamwork. As a strong contender in numerous award
categories, this team deserves to be recognized for
building a quality robot and a “team” committed to
quality in everything that they do”.
Along with these awards, both our teams qualified for the Latin American Championships in January,
2015. There, we will compete for spots in the Puerto Rico Delegation to the 2015 Vex Robotics World
Championships, this year being held in Louisville, Kentucky. It would be the 4th year in a row that Robinson
School students have earned representation in this prestigious global competition. GO HAWKS!

Notes from Upper School Division Head Sandy Rosenbaum
Upper school students have been very busy the first semester of school. The Spiritual Life department
introduced the Robinson community to The Daniel Plan, which emphasizes spiritual, physical, emotional
and social wellness. Our Physical Education department is revising its curriculum to reflect healthy life
choices and is introducing lifetime sports into the curriculum and students are using the Hawk Fitness
Trail throughout the day. Athletically our students are participating and excelling in a wide variety of
sports and competitions.
Students are also participating in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and clubs ranging from chess
to ping pong, and cheerleading… to forensics, Model UN, Poetry Out Loud and robotics. Twenty-eight
students presented their art work at the Puerto Rico Museum of Art (“A Surrealist Campeche”).
Students in the Reading Club attended a webinar with singer Usher promoting reading. And various
students have competed in Math and Science Bowls, again with great success.
Academically the teachers continue to work with new methodologies in the classroom which engage
students in project-based learning and are using assessments that model real life situations. All students
in Grades 6-12 participated in the Microsoft activity – “Hour of Code” where they learned some basic
programming skills. All our students also participated in “Puerto Rican Week” where they celebrated
their cultural heritage and participated in new experiences that gave them a greater appreciation for our
culture. Seniors have been submitting college applications and many are excited as they receive
acceptance letters and scholarships. In April, the Upper School will be applying for the Diploma Program
of the International Baccalaureate program for Juniors and Seniors.
Upper School assemblies have been a time for student leadership and presentations. The Anti-Bullying
Club will be presenting its innovative Anti-Bullying YouTube video rap and teaching the anti-bullying
guidelines. Robinson alumnus and former Puerto Rico Secretary of Health, Dr. Johnny Rullan, spoke to
the students about his accomplishments at Robinson and in the health field in Puerto Rico as outlined in
his new book, Una Vida en Salud. And with the support of the Administration and PTO, Janelle Burley,
author of iRules, spoke to the students (and parents) about their digital life and how to make responsible
choices.
Our students continue to be involved in community service as they assist with “morning drop off” duty
and the annual food and toy drive. Our students recently raised $869.89 for the MDA in the coin war
challenge. We will continue next semester with a variety of opportunities for our students. In January
we will be training teachers and students to work with a four-module depression awareness curriculum,
which is part of the Boston Children’s Hospital’s suicide prevention resources. We will be providing this
curriculum to our juniors and seniors in an effort to help them transition into college and better
understand the anxiety and mental health issues they may encounter as they leave home. Our students
continue to be happy and focused and we are excited to watch them grow and mature in all areas of
their life
And Happy Holidays to all!

Robinson Students’ Art
exhibited at the
P.R. Museo de Arte
Twenty-seven Robinson Students from 10th-12th grades, inspired by Jose Campeche
but influenced by the Surrealist Movement, were selected to have their artwork
exhibited by the P.R. Museum of Art Nov. 5-25. But after seeing the public’s response
to our students’ work, the Museum asked if it would be possible to extend the dates
until December 5!
The exhibit featured many varied pieces of student art: acrylic painting, collages,
photography and watercolors, including both large-and-small-format pieces.
The Exhibit opened November
5, 2014 with a reception for
Robinson’s parents, Board
Members, Alumni and friends
in the Burger King Gallery for
Students.

College Counselor’s Corner
Dear Parents;
It is hard the believe this semester is almost over and that our students are already
moving onto a new dimension on their road to college. Seniors are finalizing their
applications and their parents are completing the CSS Profile and FAFSA financial aid
applications. One of the most challenging decisions for senior students during this
upcoming semester is choosing which college to attend.
This is one of the most stressful decisions a young person will have to make. Many students create lists of pros and
cons, read reviews, research financial aid options and visit each school on their list to obtain a first impression.
This process could consume the student causing some distress and anxiety.
The encouraging news is that all the schools to which our students have been accepted are excellent choices
because all these colleges provide the students with opportunities to learn and grow. The reality is that students
cannot assume which college will work for them until they enroll and begin attending classes. The fact is that a
college is not a magical machine capable of transformation. But the student can be.
3 REASONS why students should not stress out too much about their final college choice:
1 Student’s career path is still undetermined:
Higher education is as much about growth and exploration as it is about preparation for a career. Until students
arrive, they simply do not understand all that is possible. Each of the colleges where the students have been
accepted allow room for growth and exploration.
2. Students do not yet know whom they will meet: The individuals student encounter during college will be an
important part of their exploration. As long as students have chosen to apply to institutions that suit their
mentality and values to maximize their chances of meeting like-minded people, they don't have reason to worry
about where they ultimately end up. The truth is that there are amazing students everywhere. Being open to
meeting them is more important than the campus at which you choose to meet them.
3. Students will change as individuals: Finally, students will be growing and evolving at an incredible rate
throughout the college experience. The person they will become will be shaped in large part by the environment
they choose. In other words, students will be adapting to the school they select and it will thus become the one
best school for them.
The simple truth is that there is no one best college for a student.. Some schools are better fits than others, but
any of the schools the students have been accepted will allow them (as long as they do everything possible to
attain it) to excel academically, socially and professionally. My advice is, look for the possibility of growth, look for
interesting people you would like to spend time with and look for a place that makes you excited for the future. If
you feel this process is daunting and clouding your judgment , then look for advice and help from those you trust
to help you through this process.
Until next time!
Have a wonderful holiday!

Transition to College
More tools for a successful transition to college…
One of the biggest adjustments a young person will make is going away to college, and for
most, living away from family and childhood friends for the first time in their life. This is
especially true for those who have lived on an island. Just as Robinson School focuses on
finding the right college match to help ensure continued success for each of its Seniors, we are
also focused on making this transition as positive an experience as possible by giving our High
School students the tools they may need to recognize and counter any feelings of depression
they may develop away at college.
Robinson has been selected as one of four schools to participate in the Puerto Rico roll-out of a
relatively new educational program. A universal curriculum geared to all students focused on
education and prevention developed by Puerto Rico-born Dr. Nadja N. Reilly at Boston
Children’s Hospital (it gets better… Nadja’s father is even a Robinson Alumnus), “Break Free
from Depression” is a curriculum designed to increase adolescents’ awareness about
depression, teach them how to recognize it in themselves and in their friends, and give them
strategies for finding help. The program is a depression awareness program and not a
treatment or counseling program.
Brought to Robinson with the help of Alumnus
Dr. Johnny Rullan and the San Juan Rotary Club,
and conducted in collaboration with the
San Juan Capestrano Center in Guaynabo,
the 4-session curriculum for high school
students features a compelling documenttary that focuses on a diverse group of
adolescents talking about their struggles
with depression and suicide. Your 11th and
12th Grade young adult will learn the
symptoms, the course of the illness, and the
methods to use for coping.

Notes from Athletic Director Alex Rivera
Robinson “ahead of the curve” once again!
There’s a big difference here
between our Physical Education
and Sports Programs
In the past here at Robinson (and still today at many other schools on the Island, the Mainland U.S.
and around the world) there was little separating our Physical Education curriculum and Sports
Programs. But several months ago, guided by our Head of School (and an athlete/coach in his own
right), we decided to stress the “Education” side of our PE curriculum more than ever before. Our
goal became teaching your children lifelong exercise and nutrition regimens that will help them
not just be healthy… but stay healthy all their years.
Physical Education, then, is for every student here at Robinson, while our competitive Sports
Program allows those determined, or gifted, students to realize their full athletic potential through
our competitive sports program.
So it came somewhat as a surprise when our Athletic Department staff was invited to the annual
Physical Education seminar held by the Puerto Rico Education Department only to hear exactly this
same new focus on differentiating PE and Sports being promoted by the experts brought in to
address us. Those of us from Robinson could only sit back and look at each other as the things we
had already begun doing were presented to our counterparts from the other schools!
Once again, Robinson is “ahead of the curve,” this time in differentiating our PE/Sport Programs.
