This means that they become confident learners who can then take charge of their lives and futures. That is the transformational power of learning which drives us and which attracts so many people to learn with us every year. We have strong connections to our local business communities and we work with them to co-create learning programmes that focus on the skills and attributes that are in demand. Our teams combine expertise in teaching and learning with real industry experience. This combination creates relevant and engaging learning experiences which give our learners the edge when it comes to taking the next step into higher education or employment. Over the last year we have developed a new career pathways concept, which provides every learner with a personalised route to achieving their ambitions and learning goals. At the start of your learning journey, we will work with you to understand what you want to achieve and together create a programme to get you there. We have also been working with like-minded colleges across the country to develop an innovative learning company model, which immerses learners in real-life business environments. This approach develops the industry-specific technical skills alongside the softer skills that employers are looking for. As you read this guide I hope that you will discover more about our approach to delivering an experience that goes ‘further than education’ and feel inspired to begin your learning journey with us. We are the leading local provider of post-16 vocational education, offering students an alternative route to university and employment. Our career pathways are designed in partnership with employers to ensure that students develop the technical and softer skills required for success. It’s an approach highlighted by Ofsted in 2014, which recognised that links with employers leads to learners gaining good entrepreneurial and employability skills. The inspection team also noted that “classrooms and workshops buzz with activity” supported by the use of new, digital technologies. Over the last year we have developed our learning company model to embed commercial enterprise activities and client-facing projects into the learning experience. In hospitality and catering this means that students get involved in all aspects of running the college’s cafes and restaurants and also provide external catering services. Students in hair and beauty progress to work in our commercial salon, run in partnership with the award-winning Francesco Group. This approach is already supporting student progression, with students finding employment with our partners on completion of their studies. It’s an exciting time to be joining Banbury and Bicester College, where a £6m investment has created new, state-of-the-art facilities for media and motor vehicle programmes. These new buildings complement the recently refurbished creative arts centre to provide contemporary and engaging learning environments. BANBURY AND BICESTER COLLEGE, PART OF ACTIVATE LEARNING FULL-TIME PROGRAMMES AND APPRENTICESHIPS 2015-16 Why choose an Activate Learning college? 4 5 WHY CHOOSE AN ACTIVATE LEARNING COLLEGE? TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN At Activate Learning our aim is to go ‘further than education’. That means pushing the boundaries of traditional education to give our students new opportunities and experiences that will equip them to succeed. SO, WHY CHOOSE US? LEARNING COMPANIES We launch real businesses – we call them learning companies – in our colleges where students gain professional experience, skills and qualifications. Learning companies demonstrate the impact and relevance of what you learn because you put new skills into practise straight away and learn from the experience. Learning companies at Banbury and Bicester College include: »» »» »» »» The Cherwell Learning Company The Graduate Salon Blooming Marvellous MOT test centre – coming soon ENTERPRISE The skills of enterprise are highly valued in today’s global marketplace. Employers want people who can think creatively, build relationships through teamwork and adapt quickly to change. Few people have a career for life these days. More typically people have three or four careers in a lifetime and an increasing number create their own employment by turning entrepreneur. At Activate Learning we also value enterprise and have shaped our curriculum so that it sits at the heart of what we do. This includes providing students with commercial, clientfocused (enterprise) activities that stretch their skills and expose them to new situations. We are one of the members of the Gazelle Colleges Group, a network of colleges which promote and develop enterprising and entrepreneurial mindsets and behaviours in their students. CAREER PATHWAYS Don’t just join a course, join a career pathway – your career pathway. We want to provide every student with a clear line of sight to employment. That means understanding what you want to achieve and setting out a plan to get there. We develop pathways tailored around your learning goals and career aspirations and we create them in partnership with you so that you feel empowered to achieve them. EMPLOYABILITY BUILT-IN We work with employers to make sure that our learning programmes meet their needs. This helps to reduce the skills gap between education and employment and means that our students are in demand. During your studies you will take part in work experience, hear from visiting speakers and work on live projects set by employers that reflect issues found in the real world. Our partnerships with employers mean that you start to build important contacts before you finish your studies – and it means some of our students are offered their first step on the career ladder as soon as they complete their qualification. Our students are ‘born digital’ and we want them to take leading-edge digital skills into the workplace. That’s why we have invested in learning zones fully-equipped with digital and mobile technology like ipads and internet TV. It’s also why we embed digital technologies like Google Apps and social media into the way that we deliver our learning. Our approach has been recognised by Ofsted and is seen as good practice by leading national bodies such as City and Guilds. INDUSTRY STANDARD FACILITIES Don’t just learn the theory – get hands on and develop your practical skills in our industry standard workshops and facilities. Whether it’s fashion, catering, sport and fitness, hair, beauty, engineering or childcare, we have got oncampus facilities that mirror those found in the workplace. We are investing in new facilities all the time, to make sure we keep pace with the changing requirements of industry. THE WHOLE JOURNEY By joining an Activate Learning college, you are not just joining one organisation but a powerful network of schools, colleges and training providers. We work in partnership with leading local universities to offer higher education courses, meaning you can progress from school leaver to undergraduate within the same learning environment. Our relationship with Activate Enterprise, the largest apprenticeship provider in the Thames Valley, provides students with excellent routes into apprenticeship training and employment. And with organisations specialising in key growth areas – such as science, engineering and the creative industries – you can find the expertise you need within the group. Every one of us can learn something new – as long we feel motivated and have the right environment and support. Our learning philosophy believes in the limitless capacity of the brain. It’s just like any other muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. However, few of us will make the effort to learn something if we don’t see the point. Motivation is essential, which is why our learning experiences focus on putting theory into practice. Practicing a new skill in a realistic business or industry setting immediately helps you to understand its impact and relevance. And it means you can tweak your approach the next time you do it, based on what did or didn’t work. Our approach to your learning Motivation aside, our emotions are the biggest factor in enabling or preventing us from learning. If we have had negative experiences of education, we can immediately put up barriers when faced with what seems like a similar situation. It can end up feeling like we can’t learn, when in reality our emotions just won’t let us. Our teaching teams understand how the brain and emotions work together so that our experience and understanding can help everyone to fulfil their potential. Find out more by visiting us and speaking to our existing students at one of our open events. Your interview We interview all of our full-time applicants, as we want to get to know you and hear about your chosen career pathway. It also gives you the chance to ask any further questions and make sure it is the right pathway for you. Extract from a Learner Journey The interviewer wanted to know what I enjoyed and took me through the personality inventory I had been sent and had completed earlier. During the interview I really felt listened to and, by the end of it, I was clear about my career path. There was no pre-determined programme, but a series of steps which I could take to obtain a Level 3 qualification. The course was designed around me. Employers were involved in setting our assessments and we were increasingly learning theory at home and applying the knowledge in the classroom – flip learning. Enterprise weeks were completed with a variety of curriculum areas, not just my own, to improve multidisciplinary team working. During the summer break I continued to work for my learning company and helped the college to recruit new students. I never anticipated that I would develop so much self-belief. I’m still following my learning journey … who knows where it will ultimately lead. What I do know is that there is no limit to what I can achieve, provided I make the effort.
