Yachad Catalog 2015–2016

“Yachad” is the Hebrew word for
together and combines 9–12th graders
from across Minneapolis. Yachad is
open to teens who are affiliated with
Reform, Conservative, and Modern
Orthodox synagogues from across
Minneapolis, as well as teens who are
not affiliated with a synagogue.
Yachad is the teen educational
program for:
Welcome to Yachad! Yachad has been a dream of the Minneapolis Jewish
community for almost ten years. This dream began with two rabbis over a
cup of coffee. Our community has created and built this amazing program
for and by teens.
Yachad brings together the best that our community has to offer to provide
transformational experiences for our teens. Through Yachad’s dynamic
and engaging environment, teens will grow along their own pathway as
they continue along their Jewish journeys.

This course is designed for teens like you who want to
dig deep into Israel’s history and politics, learn about
advocacy efforts, and develop leadership skills. Every
teen will be paired with an adult mentor who will help
guide their personal learning in this experience. The time
commitment for this fellowship includes weekly sessions,
programs outside of class, and work time together with
mentors. Teens need to apply to participate in this fellowship experience.

Let’s Talk!
Want to learn how to order food at a café or navigate
around Israel? Are you heading to Israel on a teen program
and want to learn some Hebrew before you go? Then this
is the experience for you! In this experience you will learn
practical, conversational Hebrew. This course is designed
for students who can read basic Hebrew and are ready to
understand and speak Hebrew. No prior Hebrew vocabulary or grammar is needed.

Know About Israel...and More!
Israel Leadership Fellows Program
In the College in the Schools (CIS) Program, affiliated
with the University of Minnesota, teens earn university
credit upon successful completion of the requirements.
This rigorous course of studies typically requires students
to enroll in 3 hours per week and complete all assignments and assessments. Yachad will offer five levels of
college Hebrew for teens — beginning, intermediate, and
advanced levels. Placement tests can be scheduled by
contacting the Yachad office.

Welcome to Israel! Come explore the food, history, dance,
culture, music, media, and more as you visit Israel right
here in Yachad. This unique seminar series will allow you
to immerse yourself in Israel without buying a plane ticket.
At each session you will experience a unique part of Israel’s
culture and history. Come “travel” to Israel with your
Yachad friends.

Have you ever wondered what a typical day looks like for
a teenager living in Israel? Through a virtual collaboration
with our sister city Rehovot (located outside of Tel Aviv),
you can communicate with Israeli teens and discover
different perspectives while connecting with new friends.

Cook it! Eat it! Live it! #Jewishfoodie
Grab your popcorn and get a front row seat for the Twin
Cities Jewish Film Festival. Together we will visit several
films in the festival, analyze their themes, and look for
commonalities within this prolific genre. You will also
learn from Film Director Todd Bruse about how films are
selected for the Film Festival. Teens will select a film to
promote, discuss, and run the viewing.
Love to cook? Love to cook for others? Love to make a
difference in your community? Grab your apron and head
over to the kitchen to prepare delicious ethnic foods. You
will have the opportunity to cook for several local events
in the community.

Ever wonder what goes on behind the curtain? We’ll take
you on an exciting, memorable tour around the Twin
Cities to experience live theatre at its finest. Each show
will relate to the overall Jewish theme for this experience. You will have the opportunity to meet with actors,
playwrights, and people behind the scenes as we explore
theatre in the Twin Cities.

Join other teens for this unique course with Danielle
Livon-Bemel, (HY-HC). As part of Healthy Youth-Healthy
Communities you will explore topics related to teen life
in a safe, supportive, and Jewish environment. Possible
workshop topics include issues related to mental illness,
relationships, substance abuse, eating disorders, sexual
assault, dating violence, and bullying — all within a Jewish context and framework.

Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival
HaZamir: The International Jewish
High School Choir
Join together with your peers to make beautiful music in
this unique choir/chorus. This musical opportunity brings
together teens of all ages and skill levels to sing, harmonize, and create. Local chapters across the country and
the world practice the same Jewish and/or Hebrew chorale pieces. All of the chapters join together in the spring
for a Gala Concert in New York City.

Exploring Hot Topics!
Investigate key questions of our lives and society to see
what’s trending in the Jewish world of political ethics,
sexuality, health and medicine, and global citizenship
— through Jewish text, case studies, discussion, and
reflective writing. In this hybrid online / in-person course,
you will build their own frameworks for grappling with
core questions through a Jewish lens, in dialogue with
one another. This experience will be offered in a hybrid
format which means that students will meet once a week
for a study hall, and they will work online at their own
pace to complete the additional three hours per week of
the course requirements.

The Inner Voice of the Jewish Artist
Join together on this journey to explore the inner voice
of Jewish artists in their creative space. You will visit
local Jewish artists in their lofts and studios to learn
more about how and what they create. You will have the
opportunity to explore your inner Jewish artist in our
multi-media studio. This experience will culminate in a
gallery exhibit with the local artists visiting to experience
your artistic creations.

Grab your paint shirt, dive into your canvas, and get ready
to create! You will have the opportunity to explore a variety of artistic materials with local Jewish artists. At each
session local Jewish artists will visit to inspire your artistic
work. They will teach and share samples of their work.
Take this time to explore and expand your artistic range
within a variety of mediums.
“Songs of My People” — HaZamir
Choir College Credit Companion
Course
Throughout history, Jewish communities around the
world have used music to express their values and
preserve their traditions. In this class, you will explore
the diverse languages, texts, and sounds that are part
of Jewish culture, and discover the ways in which music
has evolved. Special attention will be paid the repertoire
selected for performance by HaZamir. Participants in this
class will combine their rehearsal time in local HaZamir
chapters with online study. HaZamir will be offered in an
asynchronous online format only. Students work at their
own pace to complete the course requirements.

Jump into the national experience with Jon Adam Ross as
he creates a play locally through collaboration. Be a part
of the community in Minneapolis who participates in the
process of creation through text study, story writing, arts
workshops, and online assignments.

Founded in 2009, the Seeds of Justice Fellowship engages
young people in social justice leadership and teaches you
how to create change from a Jewish cultural and historic
lens. Over the course of a year, you will design a social
justice campaign of your choice, learn the skills necessary
to bring about social change, and put those skills to good
use as you work to advance social justice in our community. The time commitment for this fellowship includes
weekly sessions and two retreats.

Lifeguard Training
Interested in a great summer job, working at a summer
camp, or as a professional lifeguard? Sign up today to
learn the skills of water safety. Teens will also grapple
with what it means to save a life — both from humanistic
and Jewish perspectives. Upon successful completion of
this training, participants will receive a certification as a
Lifeguard. The certification includes: Lifeguarding, CPR for
Professional Rescuers and Health Care Professionals, AED,
and First Aid. The certification is good for two years. You
must be 15 years old by the last day of the class to register.

Run Away with the Mitzvah Clowns!
Mitzvah Clowning is sweeping the nation! Learn the
knowledge and skills necessary for visiting the sick (bikkur
cholim), elderly, and those with special needs. During this
experience, you will be trained to be a Mitzvah Clown. You
will learn how to apply clown make-up, create balloon
animals, and initiate conversations with others who may
be different from you. As part of your training, you will visit
people to spread cheer and joy. The Mitzvah Clown program has grown from the Israeli Dream Doctors. An Israeli
Dream Doctor will visit this class in the fall.

Friends ‘N Fun - Count Me In!
The Friends ‘N Fun program is designed to create a social
atmosphere in which all participants can succeed. Each
participant with special needs is paired with a trained volunteer for specialized, guided social interaction. Through
our various styles of programming and events, participants and volunteers build relationships through shared
experiences and create a supportive and special bond.
Everyone learns from each other and has fun. Enroll to be
a volunteer-in-training (15 year olds who are also enrolled
in Intro. to Inclusion) or a Volunteer (16+ year olds).

You will be introduced to the world of inclusion through
this workshop. You will experience both visible and

Shal-Om: Jewish Spirituality
Shal-Om blends Jewish meditation and yoga into one
life-changing course. This class is designed to explore a
variety of prayer modalities and teach stress reduction,
mindfulness, and relaxation. You will engage in traditional
Jewish mystical texts and look to non-traditional sources
for inspiration. Finally, this class will help us define our
own spirituality and attempt to help us find meaning in
Jewish prayer. You will attempt to answer critical questions about Jewish prayer: What is the purpose of prayer?
Does God answer our prayers? Are meditation and yoga
legitimate expressions of Jewish prayer?

Pray Ball: Jews and Sports
Sports play an enormous part in our cultural lives today.
This course will provide participants with the opportunity
to examine them more deeply than would be possible
on a 30-second segment on SportsCenter. “Pray Ball” will
examine current issues in the world of sports within a
Jewish context. Possible topics will include: Sports as a
vehicle for social change, the complicated intersection of
race and economics in sports, and the role that universities and big businesses play in the sporting world. You will
learn how we create spiritual connections through play,
our team, and our community. This experience will help
you connect on a spiritual level with yourself and your
teammates. Time will be spent learning and playing.

Torah High
Torah High is a unique extra-curricular Jewish studies
program for high school students. It provides meaningful and engaging Jewish learning experiences for teens,
encourages connection to the Jewish community, and
incorporates Jewish knowledge and values in students’
daily lives. This class is designed to foster identification
with and support of Israel, and strengthen positive Jewish
literacy and identity while developing understanding and
respect for the diversity of the Jewish community.

What does it take to create an
open and welcoming community?
What identities do people bring with them when they
walk through the doors of a synagogue, school, or youth
group? How can we be the best allies we can be? Come
explore these and other questions as we talk about some
of the many identities that overlap with Judaism: LGBTQ+
identities, racial identities, ability, and socioeconomic
class to name a few. Bring your questions and we’ll search
for answers!

Ultimate is here to stay! Join together with your Jewish
friends to compete in a tournament-style game of Ultimate! This seven-week workshop in the fall is a great way

Do you love to read? Would you like to read Jewish
themed-books together with your Jewish friends? Your
faculty will lead you on a mission to select a theme, genre,
and books to guide you on a literary journey. You may
select multiple themes to create smaller groups.

The vast majority of American Jews can trace their
lineages to ancestors living in Eastern Europe. Teens
will research their own families’ stories through census,
military, immigration, vital records, and other sources
and then connect their findings to the historical events
occurring in the communities that their ancestors lived
from the mid-19th century to the post World War II era.
Students will learn genealogical research techniques and
will be able to earn college credits through additional
readings, discussions, and assignments. Together we will
learn about Jewish history through the heroic decisions
made by relatives in our past that allow us to exist in the
present. This experience will be offered in a hybrid format
which means that students will meet once a week in a
study hall, and they will work online at their own pace
to complete the additional three hours per week of the
course requirements.

Bible Quiz-Chidon Ha’Tanach
Study our sacred books from a critical angle – understanding the historical background and archaeological
facts. Test your skills with your knowledge of the Bible by
studying for the National Bible Quiz Contest. The National
Bible Quiz Contest is a contest for Jewish youth in grades
6–11. During this course you will study Bible facts and
learn how to prepare for the national quiz. High scorers
are invited to New York for the next round of competition,
and the finalists are invited to Israel for the finals.

The People of the Book-Tanakh 101
Have you always wanted to know why the Jews are the
“people of the book”? This experience is designed just for
you! In this experience you will learn the basics behind our
Jewish texts — what they are, how they are organized, and
where they came from. No Hebrew or text background is
required to register.

Get ready to investigate texts from original source material. Build skills to encounter original Jewish sources with
a view in today’s world — examining the layers of Jewish
conversations throughout the ages. The specific text and
topic will be selected around your interests.

What can Rabbinic arguments teach us about a complicated contemporary issue like cloning? As it turns out, a
lot—and by applying one to the other, teens gain a whole
new understanding and appreciation of both. Through
Moot Beit Din, high school students use critical thinking
skills to apply halakhah (Jewish law) to hot topics like
stem cell research and immigration. Moot Beit Din exposes students to the vitality of the Jewish legal system and
its relevance to their own lives. Teens have the opportunity to present oral reports and defend their conclusions
before a panel of judges during a weekend-long Shabbaton. Optional spring competition travel.

11th Grade Seminar – Looking Ahead
The college selection and admissions process can sometimes be a stressful and challenging process. Learn how to
more effectively organize and participate in this process.
Special attention will be paid to factors which Jewish
applicants should consider when exploring and evaluating schools. Guest speakers may include college admissions officers and students from Hillel. Hear from college
students who will share their experiences on campus and
answer some of your questions.

12th Grade Seminar – College Bound
Yachad 101 — 9th Grade Program
What is this program called Yachad? What is pluralism?
Who am I and what does this mean to me? During this
unique seminar you will explore the origins of Yachad
in Minneapolis and how Yachad is transforming Jewish
education. Local clergy will teach this course giving you
a unique introduction and perspective to Yachad. This
course is required for all 9th graders and is offered in the
FALL only. During this hands-on, interactive course, ninth
graders will learn about Yachad, their classmates, and
themselves. Yachad 101 is the foundation for future years
in Yachad, both socially and educationally. Teens will
understand and explore the history of Yachad, examine
pluralism, and create a broad understanding of their
personal beliefs.
What does it mean to be a responsible Jew? What are the
guiding principles for making responsible choices and
taking responsible actions? As you get ready to go off to
college, this course will help you clarify your beliefs, examine various social and political perspectives, and explore
issues of diversity and choices on the college campus. Students will participate in dynamic discussions and actual
activities that foster responsible citizenship as individuals
and members of a local community. This senior seminar
will address issues on college campuses and help prepare
you for a “response-able” future.

opportunity to study together with their synagogue’s
clergy as part of Yachad. Please connect directly with your

YACHAD TUITION
Tuition fees are for the full 2015–2016 school year.
Teens select courses both in the fall and the spring.
Track 1:
Seminars and Workshops ($650)
Includes unlimited selection of Seminars and
Workshops.
Track 2:
10th Grade Confirmation ($750)
Includes unlimited selection of Elective-Style Classes,
Seminars and Workshops. (Registration for HaZamir with
Confirmation requires an additional $150 payment to
cover international dues.)
Shir Tikvah will continue to maintain their Sunday programming for 9-10th
graders at Shir Tikvah during this transition year ($485).
Track 3:
