Preparing Your Property for El Niño El Niño means there is a greater chance of experiencing heavy rainfall along the Pacific Coast of California in the coming year. Understanding and maintaining your storm drain system is an essential part in preparing for El Niño. Anything that enters the storm drains flows to the creeks and ends up in San Leandro Reservoir. All materials, such as liquid and trash, that are poured, spilled or dumped on streets, alleys and gutters enter into our storm drain system. To keep our creeks clean it is important only rain water goes down the storm drains. To ensure water is able to flow easily through the storm drain system to our reservoir, it’s essential to remember that you are all responsible for maintaining storm drains, creeks, and ditches that run through your properties. By clearing debris and removing any obstructions that could impede the flow of water, this will help water easily flow to our creeks and reservoir. If storm drain structures become blocked it increases the chance of localized flooding in urban areas. Localized flooding occurs when the storm drain system cannot handle the amount of rainfall in the area. This type of flooding can cause damage to property. Take some time to maintain your storm drainage structures and get prepared for El Niño. Moraga Education Foundation The Moraga Education Foundation (MEF) raises funds to benefit all students attending public schools in Moraga. For the 2015–2016 school year, MEF granted $1.5 million to the Moraga School District and $450,000 to Campolindo High School thanks to the generosity of parents, business sponsors and community members who gave last school year. MEF’s annual campaign kicked off in July 2015 with the goal of raising $2.2 million to continue providing the best possible education to Moraga’s students. In addition, the foundation is focusing on growing its Endowment, to ensure the long-term stability of school funding in the town. Please keep saving as much water as you can in case storms don’t bring as much snow and rain as we need. The Moraga Chamber of Commerce does not exist for the sole promotion, support and benefit of shops and big companies but offers many benefits to home-based businesses. It is more than networking— although when worked correctly could be the single key to success. As a Chamber member you become a partner with community-based entities such as the service clubs, Saint Mary’s College, and the Town leadership. The Chamber offers several venues for reaching the community face-to-face through the Community Faire in May, the July 4th, and Pear & Wine Festival. Here are some things you can do: •Inside your home, strive for 35 gallons per person per day. That’s one five-minute shower per person, a few toilet flushes and hand washes, and one full load of laundry or dishes. •Don’t water your garden if it has rained recently. The California State Water Resources Control Board banned it, and EBMUD says it’s just common sense to save that clean drinking water for yourself instead. •Watch the weather. By keeping track of how much precipitation we get, you will be better informed about how much water your garden needs. Tired of guessing? Upcoming classes will be held in Winter in Lafayette on Tuesday nights 1/12–2/23, and Spring in Moraga on Thursday nights 3/17–5/5. The course of six classes followed by a drill allows participants to learn and practice basic emergency preparedness and first aid skills. Classes are open to residents and employees of the Lamorinda area, and are free, however Lamorinda CERT asks for a commitment to attend all classes. Join the Centennial Celebration of Hacienda de las Flores Sunday, May 15, 2016 Moraga’s spectacular community treasure, the Hacienda de las Flores, turns 100 years old in 2016! To commemorate this milestone birthday, the community is invited to a fiesta-themed celebration in May honoring the Hacienda’s historic Spanish roots. Originally part of a Spanish land grant owned by Joaquin Moraga, his descendants sold the estate in 1857. It has subsequently been a ranch, personal home, orphanage, summer home to Donald Rheem, (extensively enlarged and remodeled to include an Olympic pool, stables and race track) and today is Moraga’s community and event center. Step inside the grounds, and step back in time. If you’ve never been, don’t miss the opportunity to see this magnificent landmark. The Town of Moraga, coupled with the Soda Aquatic Center and Campolindo high school campus, make the Moraga Triathlon the ideal venue for the beginning triathlete as well as the more advanced competitor. Make your New Year’s resolution and start training for the Moraga Triathlon. Compete as an individual or relay team. The players will learn the basics of the game while having loads of fun. SplashballTM is a no-contact program held in a shallow pool and floatation devices are allowed. Students should have basic swim skills: 25 yards free, 25 yards backstroke, 30 seconds tread water. Most pop songs use only three or four simple chords, so you will be playing real songs in just a few weeks. It’s easy, and small class size allows for individual attention from instructor. Instructor has BA and MA in music and over 20 years of teaching experience. A $10 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first day of class.
