The opportunity came at the 1985 SfIOT Show when I met Alan Johnson of Preclsion Sports. Alan agreed to shlp a Model 54.L8MSto me for testing. It is indeed a fine rlfle. r Not long back I tested an Anschutz Model 1522D Classlcin .22 WMR.The rifle shot like a house afire but it had trigger problems and I wasn't overly impressed wlth its wood to metal flt. In contrast, the 54.18MS (herelnafter called 54 for short) not only burned the barn at the range, its trigger ls marvelous and wood to metal flt ls excellent. The stock ls carved from extremely dense European hardwood and thank goodness for lts lightly stalned flnlsh as opposed to the oil soaking some Qerman manufacturers put to thelr rlfle stocks. Another paste wax which gives more than satisfactory performance is Behlen's Blue Label which contains a mixture of carnauba waxes. Waxes formulated with carnauba are usually more heat resistant as they have higher melting points. Improved clear finishing materials can lend the soft glow of a hand-rubbed oil finish to a wood stock - a must for old-fashionedhand measuring the high speed precisionof AU an accuracybetter than + I a classic-style rifle. That kind of finish can be achievedin a fraction of the total time required for the old linseed oil finish. The newer finishes are more resistant to moisture and abrasion. Moreover, the oil blends described will prevent dehydration, so common in super-dry climates. One must always guard against the effects of abrasionfrom dirt, dust, sand, etc. If a wax is applied after each season'suse in the field, the stock's finish may last a lifetime. rD strugglewith you can enJoy new. exciting Anschutz54.18MSRimfire Metallic Silhouette Continued from pagei5 formed with as much precision as humanly possible would be more meaningful than tests at both ranges without regard for prevailing conditions. A Redfield 1Ox Silhouette scope was mounted on the rifle with Anschutz rings. Anschutz now offers two scope mountingsystems: clamptype for the grooved receiver (which I used) and rings and bases for attaching to the drilled and tapped receiver. The rings are solid steel and quite nicely finlshed, but the top screws need wider slots. I had to grind a screwdriver extremely thin before it would enter the slotted-head screws. The 1Ox Redfield performed beautifully and makes me wonder why those Denver folks bowed out of the competition and varmint shooting market. Best accuracy by a small margin came from what ls probably the most accurate .22 Rlmfire ammunltion loaded in the U.S.- WesternMark lll. It also punched out the smallest slngle group of all loads tested - .29 inch. Sadly enough though, thls fine ammunltlon was discontlnued some years ago. Second in accuracy and the only other load to average less than a half inch was Lapua Match ammunition. Next was RWS Pistol Match whlch. surprisingly enough, sllghtly edged RWSRlfle Match in accuracy. I had intended to also try RWSRSO which has become the match grade ammunltlon by which all others areJudged, but my dwindllng lnventory wouldn't stand the straln. I was pleased to see the 42-grain Super Silhouette load take flfth place, since Wlnchester is one of only two companles to offer a load speciflcally for this demandlng sport. The Wlnchester T-22's performance wasn't what one would call shabby in the test rlfle, but the Anschutz wasn't exactly fond of either Federal load. The blggest dlsappolntment came after 25 bullets from CCI Green Tag ammunitlon had been sent downrange. flowever, in all fairness to the fellows at Lewiston, I must mention that four of the flve groups averaged .79 inch and the fifth group had four shots in less than one-half inch. But the fifth shot opened the group to 1.57 inches. Most likely, the wind zigged when I zagged. Usually, I find 0reen Tag to be one of the most accurate domestic loads available, 48 RIFLE 1O4 but for some reason the Anschutz didn't like it. and the high comb helps to reduce fatigue during long shooting sess i o n s .I p l a n t o s h o o t t h e t e s t r i f l e i n our next hlunter Rifle bench rest m a t c h f o r . 2 2 r i m f i r e s .
