After a complicated year, as usual, we look forward to a more glorious future
Unfortunately 2013 did not end the way we hoped it would. After a promising start
in which we won two more titles, we were unable to deliver what we had
expected and planned for the Brazilian Championship. We had plenty of victories,
from the unprecedented win in the Libertadores Cup, through the 27th São Paulo
Championship to the Recopa in July. But our performance was far below
expectations in the last months of the year.

Elsewhere in Corinthians,
2013 saw great results. We won

title and the Brazil Cup with Rony
Gomes; the historical Rip Curl
Pro in Bells Beach, Australia with
Adriano de Souza (“Mineirinho”);
the Beach Soccer World Cup; the
São Paulo Futsal League; the state
and metropolitan championships
and the Brasil Correios Cup
with the Under-20 Futsal team;
three titles in the São Paulo
Youth Championships (Under-13,
Under-15 and Under-17); the BH
Cup (Under-15); the third American
Football state championship; the
Canon Lyon City Cup (Under-15);
and for the first time ever, we
were the leaders in the national
swimming ranking.
In areas other than sport, the
club also showed impressive
growth. In the clubhouse
members benefited from
improvements in diverse areas,
such as canindé, tamburello,
tennis, the great hall, the
children’s playground and
in bocce. We also held the
internal championship with the
participation of more than 500
children in five categories.
We reformulated our
ombudsman service to be able
to better listen to and serve
supporters and members.
In Parque São Jorge we also
organized major events, such
as the José Finkel Trophy, the
Corinthians Poker Circuit, the
Corinthians Canto Por Ti (I sing
for you) Festival and a circus.
We featured in an article about
the organization of the World
Cup in Brazil published by the
prestigious North American
magazine The New Yorker, in
January 2014. The article was
on the World Cup in Brazil, but
dedicated 14 pages to Corinthians,
covering a number of subjects
such as the construction of
the stadium which hosted the
opening of the Cup, the numerous
titles the club has won in recent
years, its marketing activities,
Ronaldo the Phenomenon’s
time with the club and the fact
that more than 30 thousand
passionate fans invaded Japan to
see Timão win its second world
club championship.
Two events greatly saddened
us in 2013. One of these was the
death of the young Bolivian
Kevin Douglas Beltrán Espada
in February, after being hit by a
signal flare fired from the stands
where there were a number of
Corinthian supporters, 12 of whom
were arrested. In conjunction
with the Ministry of Justice and
Foreign Relations, we provided
accompaniment for the arrested
supporters until their release and
donated US$ 50,000 to Kevin
Espada’s family. We were also
shocked by the accident at the
Arena Corinthians in which two
workers – Fábio Luiz Pereira,
a crane operator for BHM, and
Ronaldo Oliveira dos Santos, an
assembly worker for Conecta
– were killed. We immediately
initiated an investigation into
the causes of the accident and
provided the victims’ families
with full support. A tribute was
paid to these workers, both
Corinthians, during the 37th round
of the Brasileirão at Pacaembu.
It was a difficult year, which
was reflected in our economicfinancial performance. Although
results were positive in 2013, they
were down on previous years.
Our revenues decreased by 12%
in 2013, but the accumulated
increase over the last six years
was 135%, reaching R$ 316
million. Disciplined, responsible
management enabled the club
to post a surplus of R$ 1 million
in 2013, with an accumulated
surplus of R$ 34.2 million since
2007. This situation was the
result of a home stadium ban for
various Brazilian Championship
games, closed gates in a
Libertadores Cup game and a
general decrease in investment
in the Brazilian football market.
Additionally, the team’s early exit
from the Libertadores in 2013,
and its non-classification for
the 2014 competition prevented
the generation of new revenues.
We have everything we need
to turn this situation around,
starting with the inauguration
of our stadium, which will
host Corinthians’ games and
entertainment events. We
may therefore look forward
to revenues from ticket sales,
merchandising, sponsorship, box
rental, sales of licensed products
and other sources of income,
such as the naming rights
for the stadium.
We have already begun a new
cycle for 2014. We will make
the dream of the more than 30
million Corinthians come true:
the inauguration of the Arena
Corinthians and hosting the FIFA
2014 World Cup in our new home.
We are confident it will be

journalist Thomaz Mazzoni,

Even with the 12% decrease in revenues compared with the
previous year, Corinthians’ total revenue grew 135% between
2007 and 2013, ending the year at R$ 316 million. The reduction in
revenues during the last year was due mainly to a home stadium
ban on games during the Brazilian championship, having the
gates closed during a Libertadores Cup game and increased
investment in contracting major players for professional football.

The results of responsible, efficient management are evident in
Corinthians’ level of indebtedness. In 2007, investment in players
and fixed assets was low, totalling R$ 101.6 million. Additionally,
revenues without player transfers were lower than the club’s
indebtedness (R$ 63.2 million). Over the last six years, this
situation has been turned around, ensuring adequate coverage
of debt. Between 2007 and 2013, revenues without players
transfers grew by almost 300%, while indebtedness increased by
91%, ending last year at R$ 193.7 million.
The higher investment in professional football, the non-receipt of
goodwill payments – the contracts with Nike and TV Globo were
renewed in 2012 – and the lack of new sponsorship contracts led
to a reduction in revenues and an increase in costs. Football costs
increased from R$ 233.3 million in 2012 to R$ 248.2 million in 2013.

Called the Nova Era: Corinthians (New Era: Corinthians), the producers
have already arranged partners for the project, which will be distributed
by Europa Filmes. Corinthians itself has licensed the film as an official
product, although the club is not participating directly in the production.
The script, written by Alexandre Novaski and Nanci Pittelkow, is
audacious. In it, Corinthians is a major force in a world of bounty. None of
the apocalypse to be found in Hollywood productions, here hunger has
been eradicated and there is no more war.
According to the script, the formation of the Corinthians dynasty is the
result of an intense internationalization process which takes place during
the 21st century. In this futuristic setting, Corinthians contracts a scientist,
George Stevens Lima, to recreate any period in history using what the
producers call a neural device.

(I sing for you)
Festival
Inspired by the Brazilian popular music
festivals of the 1960s and 1980s, in 2013
Corinthians promoted “Canto por ti,
Corinthians” (I sing for you, Corinthians),
the first music festival ever in
Corinthians’ history. The contest was a
major success, attracting entries from
all over the country.
The idea behind the festival was to
consolidate and transmit the culture and
values of the Corinthian nation to different
generations by encouraging composers
and artists of different styles and types of
music. It also represented an opportunity
to revive values that are important for the
club and to provide a stage for Corinthian
composers. The objective is to encourage
the custom of paying tribute to our team
through diverse musical genres.
The contest lasted from August to
November 2013, mobilizing crowds of
people around this Corinthian passion.
At the end, there were 26 finalists, 12 of
whose names will be immortalized on the
first genuine Corinthian CD and DVD.
The first edition of the festival pays
tribute to Adoniran Barbosa, one of the
most important composers in Brazilian
popular music and one who dedicated
many songs to Corinthians. Adoniran
was the patron of the event.
Many major names in Brazilian music
participated in the festival, including
groups like the Trovadores Urbanos, the
Demônios da Garoa and the singer Luiza
Possi, who announced the contestants
who made it to the finals.
The winner received a prize of
R$ 10 thousand, as well as the Adoniran
Barbosa trophy. The contestants
coming in second and third place
received prizes of R$ 7 thousand and
R$ 5 thousand respectively. There were
also prizes of R$ 5 thousand each for
the best interpreter and the singer
chosen by popular vote.
To end the festival in style, the singer
Michel Teló, famous for the international
hit “If I catch you”, gave a show in the
Parque São Jorge gym.

The rowing
tradition
The influence the sport had on the club modified its original
coat of arms, with the addition of the pair of oars and the anchor
Rowing is one of the
more traditional sports at
Corinthians, having been
introduced in 1933, when the
club was presided by Alfredo
Schürig. At the time, the club
acquired ten used sculls from
the Clube Espéria and initiated
a brilliant campaign resulting
in a great many rowing
victories. In 1926 Corinthians
had bought a large piece of
land on the banks of the Tietê
river on São Paulo’s east side,
the current location of Parque
São Jorge. Upon moving
to this new site, the club
discovered the delight and
the glory to be had in rowing
regattas. Several generations
of members learned to swim
and to row in river. And it was
due to rowing that the anchor
and the oars were added to the
club’s coat of arms in 1927.
In 1972, the University of
São Paulo inaugurated its
Olympic aquatic area and the
club opened a second centre
for rowing activities, taking
advantage of the extensive
infrastructure which included
a large area for aerobic
exercises and training boats.

An age-old sport | Rowing was popular before Christ. Indeed, for the Chinese and
the Egyptians it was one of the main means of transportation. Rowing competitions as
we know them today began in 1715 with single-skiff boat races. The world-famous races
between the English universities Oxford and Cambridge on the river Thames, which use
eight-man skiffs, began in 1829. 1893 saw the foundation of the International Rowing Association (Fisa) by Belgium, France, Italy and Switzerland. Whereas, in the state of São Paulo,
the first rowing competition took place in 1897 in the city of Santos (São Paulo).
With the construction of a major highway alongside the Tietê and ever higher levels
of pollution in the river, the club’s rowing activities were transferred to the Olympic
facilities in the university of São Paulo. This area is now the base for a number of rowing
clubs, including Corinthians.

the competitiveness of the
Corinthian rowers. Currently,

in 2010. In 2013, the team
participated in the World
Rowing Championship,
in which more than 3,300
athletes competed before a
public of over 10 thousand
spectators, winning a second
place in one of the stages.
The club was also won the
world championship in the
Master category four times.
The Water Sports
department, which is
responsible for rowing
activities, offers:

• classes for beginners on the
club premises and further

University of São Paulo facility;

health and safety-related questions
via the Internal Accident Prevention
Commission (CIPA in the Portuguese
acronym), but these questions are not
addressed in formal union agreements.
The Club is attentive to the potential
involvement of child labour in its
activities, for which reason all the
contracts it enters into are in compliance
with Brazilian and international
legislation. Corinthians’ relations with
its players are aligned with Brazil’s
Child’s and Adolescent’s Statute and
Pelé law. Fifa and Brazilian legislation
and regulations also set forth a series
of provisions to protect young players;
no work contracts may be signed by

80,000 fans travel to Rio

Corinthians wins the State

wins the City of São Paulo

Championship, beating
Santos by 1- 0. The match
features a goal scored
by Palhinha and an

February 10, 1980 – the 2-0
win over Ponte Preta after
the third match of the
finals gives Corinthians
another State Championship
title, valid for the 1979
tournament, the 16th won by
the club in its history. Many
