Parker INTRODUCTION TO THE GUARDIAN UNIVERSE: 1980 Welcome to the Demo of the Guardian Universe. It is a place where super heroes are few and so are the super villains that they battle. The world you will enter is not that different from this Earth we live on. Events happen and history is about the same. The difference is that super-hero teams exist and are run by the governments and the heroes themselves are known as Guardians. The villains are mostly rogues, people with super powers that run unchecked. Technology is about the same as well with a few exceptions, for example Space Station King Richard III. Aliens are a rare sight on this world, but there are reasons why which will be explained in the Guardian Universe Core Fuzion RPG. Also there is the constant outbreak of zombies around the world and genetically engineered horrors. If this world hasn’t caught your attention yet, oops, you might not like this game. • This is just an introduction to a bigger piece. All material inside is made to wet your appetite and draw you into a bigger fold. If you like the Demo then you’ll love the rest of the actual book. Talsorian Games, with easy play rules for those of you who want to have an easy set-up. http://www.talsorian.com/ In the Beginning Earth was a peaceful world where good had reigned for centuries and evil had been held in check. This all came to an end in 1972 when a man known only as Cartel suddenly appeared in China during a Yukazu clan war. Cartel destroyed the rival clan with tremendous power and left in flash of light taking the bodies of the dead ninja with him. He brought them back to life and turned them into his private army of zombie ninja. Cartel built a palace in North Korea and began to recruit Rogues to serve him in his conquest of Earth. This didn’t go unnoticed by Interpol who quickly informed the United Nations. This gave birth to the worldwide Guardian program in 1981. Taken from the concept that the British government developed after the Vietnam Conflict, different countries assembled Rogues from around the world to defend themselves from the threat of Cartel. They would come to be known as ‘Guardians.’ These weren’t the only threats going on in the world. The Iran-Iraqi War had begun, El Salvador guerillas were killing around a thousand civilians a month and Ronald Reagan took office. With Reagan came Project: Genetec, the growing of super enhanced soldiers which he started in 1985. Before that there were hundreds of experiments going on in secret labs. The Rebirth chemical was also back in production and causing a lot of problems in South America. Things were getting nasty, not better. 1980: The Search for Guardians In 1980, the United States and United Kingdom began their task of forming Guardian Teams. The UK already had a small team assembled and it was led by UK Man, an ex-SAS officer who had obtained his powers of invulnerability through mystic wrist bands. It was a hard year for the British, but once Margaret Thatcher got word of the Guardian teams, she made sure they were funded well. The United States on the other hand had formed their first team, which was already in trouble with the Rebirth outbreak in South 2 GUARDIAN UNIVERSE CORE FUZION DEMO J. Parker America. The US team leader, Martial Law, found himself in a dire situation when he arrived to rescue a clean-up crew only to find the area covered with Rebirth. The end result was the first US Guardian team being killed and Martial Law calling in a napalm strike on the area. What is a Guardian? A Guardian is a human being that has exhibited extra ordinary powers. They can be anyone from any walks of life, but they all MUST be registered and currently working for a government that has a recognized Guardian program. Some people choose not to be active Guardians and in doing so are ordered not to use their powers. To do so means you are labeled a Rogue, a super being who uses their powers outside of government permission. A Brief History of the Guardian Program Originally formed during WW2 as a highly trained covert team, the British Guardians were the first. Their exploits are untold and not much is known about them or their cause. The only thing that anyone does know, are that the Guardians of that era did not have superhuman abilities. Instead they relied on great skill and cunning. In 1974 the first public Guardian appeared, he was UK Man, a British captain whose powers came from mystical wrist bands. He stood for all that was good and the team he assembled in 1984 were nothing but the most upbeat and compassionate members. The United Kingdom wasn’t the only country to get into the Guardian trend. The United States, desperate to undo their folly at the end of the Vietnam Conflict, created their own team. The team leader would be Martial Law, the first to come from Project Undeath. Marshal Law was a cyborg and a well trained soldier. He also had good ties with the military. His team would be some of the darkest heroes that the world would see. There was constant fighting between the US and UK Guardian teams, which would eventually lead to deaths on both sides. By 1992, both teams had gone through major changes. The new teams were much more down to Earth and had good relations with each other. Both teams had to fight Genetecs and those battles had cost them dearly. The new threats came from an increasing number of rogues and other worldly entities. Even aliens made several attempts at invasions, and only through teamwork did these Guardians uphold the laws of humanity. Character Creation For this demo, GMs need to use the Competent Campaign Style. So each player gets 30 Characteristic Points and 35 Option Points (See pages 6 & 10 of CF). We also have a new way to determine powers. Instead of using OP use Power Points (PP). These are determined by dividing the player’s END by two. Players buy powers from that. Below is a template for Guardian players for this demo. GMs may wish to create characters before the demo and provide them for players. If you have more time then let players dig into the Core Fuzion book. Parker GUARDIAN UNIVERSE CORE FUZION DEMO Paychecks, you betchya! Guardians do get pay in addition to their free room and board. The pay rate goes as such: Basic Appearance (Charity Function) $200 Bodyguard Mission (non hazardous) $500 Bodyguard Mission (Hazardous) $1,000 Criminal Intervention (non-rogue) $1,000 Criminal Intervention (rogue) $2,000 Rescue Mission (minimal threat) $2,500 Rescue Mission (out of country or maximum threat) $5,000 Full Scale Mission (non-rogue) $7,000 Full Scale Mission (rogue intervention on foreign soil) $10,000 The Whole Show (These missions usually mean that the world is watching. The threat is deadly and most likely people have died and that includes Guardians. If this mission is on foreign soil than there must be great care taken not to injure any civilians.) $30,000 Global Fallout (Other Guardian teams have made a hostile threat to your country and military forces are deployed. This only happens when a world wide threat has gone out of control. Example: When a Rebirth Facility in Alaska got attacked. Russia, the UK, the US and Canadian teams battled it out.) $50,000 4 GUARDIAN UNIVERSE CORE FUZION DEMO J. Parker THE INTRODUCTION ADVENTURE The Rebirth Conspiracy This adventure is designed to give players a quick introduction to what the Guardian Universe has to offer. The adventure takes place right after the outbreak at the Rebirth Facility in South America. When creating characters for this game, they must be done using realistic stats. If using Fuzion, you MUST use the Competent Campaign Style. The players will be part of a United Kingdom Guardian team, in training. There will be one NPC provided to give them guidance during the adventure, which shall be controlled by the Game Master. The Story: The British Intelligence Agency has intercepted a mayday from a research facility in South America. The message is as follows: This is Rebirth Facility Alpha. Rupture in transfer line. Rebirth has leaked out into the jungle. Several casualties in main transfer station reported. Explosions heard. Staff unable to evacuate due to contamination. Request assistance. The UK Guardian brigadier has ordered a training team to go to South America to investigate, but not interfere. Each player will receive a tele-harness, a bio-hazard suit and a sidearm for this mission. The Real Story: (Text taken from Guardian Universe Core) Excerpt from Top Secret Projects During the early 1970's the U.S. built a chemical weapons factory in the South American jungle. Only known as the Rebirth Facility, it was the intent of the scientists to create a chemical that would kill organic life and then became non-toxic after 24 hours. Rebirth failed when one of the pipes leaked and killed everyone within 10 miles in 1980. This was only the beginning, because when the cleanup team arrived they were greeted by hoards of zombies. It seemed that the chemical somehow killed the people and then brought them back to life. The team was massacred and the U.S. sent a strike team in along with a few Guardians to deal with the problem. The only survivor was Martial Law, the team leader, who then ordered the whole area napalmed. Mission Briefing The players will be escorted to the War Room where they will receive a briefing by the UK Guardian Brigadier. Here is what he says: At 0200 hours our intelligence intercepted an encrypted transmission from South America to Washington, DC. It appears to be a distress call. The message is played. We are unable to gather any information as to what ‘Rebirth’ is or where the exact location of this facility is. We believe it’s in the northern tip of Bolivia. We would like a team to go there and investigate what has happened, but using discretion. We do not want the US to find out we are down there. You will be accompanied by Captain Ross to make sure you don’t blow this mission. Understand that there is a possibility of contamination so you must play it safe. We 5 GUARDIAN UNIVERSE CORE FUZION DEMO J. Parker do not know what will happen if you come in contact with this ‘Rebirth’ chemical. In front of you there is a mission objective packet. This mission is on a need to know basis, tell no one. Good luck! MISSION OBJECTIVES: Travel to northern tip of Bolivia Locate Rebirth Facility Gather information on ‘Rebirth’ DO NOT interfere with ANY U.S. operation Lethal Force is authorized ONLY in self defense DO NOT become detected by Bolivian government or U.S. personnel If any member is contaminated and threatens the safety of the team, Terminate with extreme prejudice! Acquire a sample of ‘Rebirth’ for study. ADVENTURE The players will be flown to Bolivia by the RAF. They will have to parachute in and hike into the contaminated zone. The players will be equipped with the standard UK Guardian gear listed above in the template. They will also receive a biohazard suit as well and a pistol of their choice. (These suits were not meant for combat, so each time a character gets in hand to hand or if you want to catch them off guard check to see if the suits ripped.) From this point the GM can take total freedom in getting the players there. This world was designed to use your imagination. The only catch is, the players will not be able to enter the facility. When they draw close enough to see it, they will witness U.S. bombers dropping napalm on the site. Encounter one: Zombie Village The players will come upon a village about four miles into their hike. There is an unnerving stillness in the area. There are no signs of life, and that includes birds and animals. There are about ten huts set up in a circular fashion around a tribal circle surrounded with bones. As the players get closer have them make spot checks with minimum difficulty (DV 10). If they pass they hear strange tearing noises coming from the huts. If they fail then they may investigate further or move on. If they investigate then they will smell death emanating from the huts. If they look inside they will see about 2-3 zombies feasting on some newly dead. They will have to make a WILL check (DV 15) against the site of Zombies, failure means the players run away. They will also need a CON check (DV 15) to see if they lose their lunch at the site of cannibalism. There are a total of 20 zombies in this village, all victims of Rebirth. Captain Ross will suggest moving out before the zombies decide that the team would make a better lunch. If players get too close to the zombies then they will be attacked. 6 GUARDIAN UNIVERSE CORE FUZION DEMO J. Parker Encounter two: Hunted As the players draw closer to the facility, they will discover the body of one of the facilities scientists. He is wearing a lab coat and on his back there are three gigantic gashes. In his left hand is a lab notebook with the following written in it: Project Rebirth Notes The Rebirth chemical has different effects on different organisms causing reactions ranging from the zombie mutation to raging a madman. Recent experiments show that individuals with special mental attributes might be able to resist the effects. The following are a list of observations about the different variants. 1) Chemical causes rage in Omega patients 2) Psionic energy can cause immunity to a certain point 3) When exposed to radiation the chemical mutates 4) A high dose of radiation causes an uncontrollable mutation 5) When in mist form the chemical strongly affects previously dead 6) Inhalation of chemical causes mutation 7) Simple filters can prevent contamination 8) Chemical seems to have no effect on sea life 9) When exposed to chemical use decontamination chamber 10) Chamber has proven successful in preventing outbreaks Upon reading the notebook the players will hear an ungodly scream. The ground will begin to rumble slightly and the sounds of tree branches breaking can be heard off in the jungle. The sound is moving closer every second. The players at this point can stay and find out what it is or they can flee. If they stay, a beast that resembles a rhino will break through the jungle and attack the players. If they run the beast will still break through and attempt to kill them. This creature was the prime experiment that the facility was working on and probably what caused the leak. Here is the chance the players need to accomplish their mission. A Quick Look at Gear and Chemicals (GM) Tele-harness The tele-harness was designed for quick evacuation from hostile zones. The UK Guardians are the ONLY people who have access to them. They fit around the chest and most Guardians find some way to use the straps to hold up parts of their costumes. This works well since the tele-harness cannot teleport inorganic material. This means when a Guardian is in a fix, they use the harness and teleport naked back to their HQ in England. The harness may teleport up to two people if the wearer is holding onto another person. There is no known way to block the signal when a Guardian uses the harness. If a Guardian is about to be crushed or killed they may opt to use the harness. They just need to roll up to half of the attacker’s roll to teleport out in time. This harness only works on Earth and will work anywhere on the planet. 7 J. When a player is exposed they must make a CON check difficulty 30 or become contaminated by Rebirth. If a player is contaminated roll on the following table: Roll 1d6 1-2 Psychotic fit (player becomes homicidal and may attack fellow players if they interfere with his actions) 3-4 Player slowly mutates into Zombie (player may use powers for up to 1 hour before they die and return as a zombie) 5-6 Player dies and returns in 1d6 turns as a zombie Symptoms A player who becomes infected and is alive will show signs of fatigue. Dark bags will form under their eyes and a green glaze will form on their skin. Their behavior becomes violent and Armor: Powers/Psionics/Magic agitated until they die. After death, the victim’s body goes cold and they Misc: will remain dead for about ten minutes to an hour. It almost stands upright and instead of feet on the front legs there are hands. Its skin is light purple and it has Rebirth foaming out of its mouth. It doesn’t speak, just smashes and kills anything in sight. He has no real powers that have been detected and if he does have them they never get used. Ross is a combat specialist who loves Black Ops more than anything else in the world. He spends most of his time training these new Guardians who require combat training.
