One of the most environmentallyfriendly convention facilities in the nation, our center is LEED Silver-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. OUR GREEN EFFORTS HAVE RESULTED IN MANY LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL RECOGNITIONS AND AWARDS: LEED Silver Certification by U.S. Green Building Council Alonzo Award for Sustainable Business Practices by Downtown Partnership Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) by CalRecycle 7-Time Winner Recycler of the Year by City of San Diego 5-Time Winner Director’s Award for Recycling Efforts by City of San Diego 3-Time Winner 10 SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTER | FACILITY-GUIDE Innovative Initiative Award by Port of San Diego Green Business Network Environmental Leadership Award by Professional Convention Management Association Clean Air Circle Honoree by American Lung Association Large Champion Honoree Award for Excellence in Energy Savings by SDG&E San Diego Excellence in Energy (SANDEE) Award by San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce FACILITY OVERVIEW WASTE MINIMIZATION • Recycling in 2015 diverted approximately 61% of our total waste from local landfills. • Initial recycling efforts began in 1990 with the diversion of glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans, mixed paper, wood pallets and clean green waste. • Mixed recyclables (paper, plastic, aluminum and glass) are collected daily in clearly marked bins throughout our building helping to make it effortless for attendees to keep recyclables out of the waste stream. Approximately 100 tons of food is donated to local charities annually. • Used batteries, printer ink cartridges, lightbulbs, tires and corrugated cardboard are diverted. • Copper wire is recycled after every show, averaging five tons annually. • Cooking oil is collected and recycled into bio-diesel fuel. • Heating/Cooling System replacement and upgrades save 2.7 million kWh annually. • Energy-management software and energy-efficient lighting saves 734,000 kWh annually. • Energy-efficient dishwashers in our kitchen save 3,297 kWh and 8,198 gallons of water annually. • The convention center is undergoing a conversion to LED lights. Instead of modifying the building’s mounting systems to accept off-the-shelf fixtures, we are working with a manufacturer directly to replace 10,282 existing fixtures with new LED fixtures and lamps. The more environmentally–friendly LEDs offer a number of benefits including improved visibility and reduced energy consumption. • Our in-house green team is dedicated to exploring and implementing the best green practices by encouraging sustainability, waste minimization and energy and water conservation. FOOD COMPOSTING • Nearly 150 tons of food waste is diverted annually. The convention center composts all food scraps eliminating the need for garbage disposals in our kitchen. ENVIRONMENTAL PURCHASING • Products made with biodegradable and recycled materials including copy paper, legal pads, envelopes, toilet paper, facial tissue and paper towels are purchased. • Executive management develops best practices to minimize the impact of events globally by participating on IAVM’s Sustainability Committee for environmentally responsible public assembly facility management. • Environmentally responsible cleaning products are purchased for carpets, floors, kitchens and bathrooms. • Dry cleaning and laundering services for staff uniforms use biodegradable solvents. • Fruits, vegetables, olive oils and seafood are purchased from local farms and suppliers that are within a 100 mile radius, as supply and season allows. WATER CONSERVATION • Low flow automatic sinks and toilets are in all restrooms. • All in-house contractors require adherence to green practices. • Outdoor landscaping uses drip irrigation, drought-tolerant plants and mulch to reduce watering. DONATING REUSABLE GOOD S • Coordination with clients ensures excess food is donated to local charities following events. Approximately • Leftover convention items, unclaimed lost and found items and surplus furniture and computers are donated to local schools and social service organizations. Approximately 10 tons are donated annually. LEADERSHIP • Green disposable cutlery and plate ware are available on request. There are compostable, sustainable and recyclable options. Please inquire as to the best options for your event. • Combined conservation efforts save 81,026 gallons of water annually. 100 tons of food is donated to local charities annually. • The San Diego Convention Center is proud to be a member of the Port of San Diego’s Green Business Network, a group of local businesses dedicated to improve their operational efficiencies and track their successes. TRANSPORTATION • Downtown is home to hotels, restaurants, retail shops and attractions all within walking distance of the convention center, eliminating the need to drive when meeting downtown. • Our convention center is easily accessible via the San Diego Trolley or bus. • Close proximity of hotels to the convention center reduces shuttling emissions.
