This March-born ewe lamb is sired by Diamond D Dorpers 1018 and out of RF 5444 (2010 National Champion at Sedalia) who was Champion Ewe at the 2011 NAILE Junior Show, 2012 Ft. Worth & Houston. We also had 1st Flock at the 2012 North American International Livestock Exposition! And Proudly Introducing the Next Piece of the Puzzle: “NITRO” “NITRO” Dry Creek Dorpers 0520 Champion Ram at the 2012 North American Junior Show and 1st Spring Ram Lamb in the Open show for Jessica Jean Larrick. Thank you to all our buyers this past year. Thanks also the ADSBS for all their support of Dorper youth programs, and to the breeders who have helped build our flock. We are consigning a Fall-born half-brother to “Destiny” to the Ft. Worth Sale. See our show flock at the Texas stock shows this Winter. I pray that last year’s dry weather and high feed prices are behind us. The most important thing for us to remember as we go into 2013 is: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 Dorpers are suited best for success in the face of the challenges of today’s livestock industry. Drought, high feed prices, and lower lamb prices make the livestock industry difficult. We are blessed with a breed that allows us to turn everyone else’s challenges into our opportunities. Having sheep that can thrive under marginal conditions, gives us the chance to shy away from filling feed troughs with expensive grain and become more efficient managers of our businesses. Recently, I had an interesting conversation with Daniel Rivers of Tennessee. Daniel told me about comments that members of his community shared with him. Daniel’s neighbors told him they believed his sheep operation was making better use of, and probably more profit than, any other crop or livestock they had seen on his family’s land over the past fifty plus years. Daniel says it sure is nice not having to buy tons of feed for hogs or fertilizer for tobacco. Our society is committed to supporting local clubs and educational opportunities in order to support our members’ drive to be better and more efficient shepherds. Our coming Dorper course in Duncan, OK in April 2013 is going to be an important opportunity for our members. Tiens Jordaan, of South Africa, is coming to serve as our course instructor. Several years ago Tiens visited my ranch. I was sure surprised by the two rams he selected for me to use as primary sires in my flock. To tell you the truth, I didn’t really care for the two rams and had been planning to sell them. I sure am glad I followed the instruction of Mr. Jordaan because the rams he selected have been pivotal in getting my flock where it is today. Please, come to Duncan. I am confident this opportunity will help you make better decisions for your flock and add to your ranch’s profitability. New Director, Bill Kuecker of Tennessee, and packing house operator, Craig Jones of Texas, are working hard on a program to ensure greater profits for our members. They are working to brand a “Certified Dorper Lamb” label. The society is grateful for the equity this project is sure to build for our breed. Mr. Jones is committed to Dorper lamb because of the quality of the carcasses he sees daily. As our commercial lambs command a greater premium, demand for our registered stud rams and ewes will grow as well. I invite you all to Duncan in April. Take this opportunity to come and learn. We encourage you to participate in our show and sale in Duncan, as well as our other sales throughout 2013. These sales give you the chance to buy genetics that match breed standard in the show ring and produce premium Dorper lambs on the pasture. May God bless our flocks in 2013! Gillespie, Weston, MA The Dorper & White Dorper shows at the 2012 North American had outstanding quality animals exhibited. In the junior show, Champion Ram and Champion Ewe both went to Jessica Jean Larrick of Ohio. Reserve Champion Ram was won by Wyatt Wertz of Ohio, and Reserve Champion Ewe went to Inbody Brothers of Ohio. I n t h e N A I L E O p e n S h o w, Riverwood Farms won Champion Ram in White Dorpers, with University of Kentucky winning Reserve honors. Riverwood Farms won both Champion and Reserve White Dorper Ewes and 1 st Flock and Premier Exhibitor. In the Dorper classes, Seth Gillespie had Champion Ram, Champion Ewe and 1st Flock. Riverwood Farms had Reserve Ram and Premier Exhibitor, and Jessica Jean Larrick had Reserve Ewe. Now we head into the 2013 Texas stock show season. January 26 will be the ADSBS Regional Show in Ft. Worth, and the Ft. Worth Regional Dorper Sale. Sale catalogs are posted at www.Dorper. org. There will also be strong Dorper shows at San Antonio and San Angelo in February, and Houston in March. Members of the American Dorper Sheep Breeders Society and others interested in Dorpers and White Dorpers will want to be part of activities planned for April in Duncan, Oklahoma. The ADSBS will be hosting both a Junior and Senior level Dorper Course for breeders, in conjunction with the MidAmerica Dorper Show & Sale, the Annual General Membership meeting of the Society, and a Youth Breeding Sheep Show. The schedule calls for the beginner and advanced Dorper Courses to be held on Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26 at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center, Duncan, Oklahoma, beginning each day at 9 AM. Instructors for the courses include Theuns Botha from South Africa; Preston Faris of Sonora, Texas; Warren Cude of Fort Stockton, Texas; and Ron Guenther of Raymond, Ohio. These courses cover a broad spectrum of topics, focusing extensively on the breeds standards of the Dorper and White Dorper, but also covering many management and selection topics. At 2 PM on Friday will be a Judges Certification program for experienced sheep judges Offering Quality Dorper and White Dorper Member of: American Dorper Sheep Breeders’ Society * Southeastern Dorper Association American Boer Goat Association Robin Rau or Shirley Brooks (229)723-9194 (h) (229)416-5199 (c) 6 Colquitt, Georgia shelbyacres@windstream.net www.shelbyacresdorper.com www.dorper.org Winter 2013 Following the courses, those enrolled will take a written test on Friday afternoon, and receive a certificate for successful completion of the Dorper Courses. You can elect to take the beginner course, advanced course, or potentially both courses if schedules can accommodate. Friday Evening, April 26 will be the show for animals consigned to the Mid-America Sale. Theuns Botha will serve as judge. The ADSBS Annual General Membership meeting will be held either Friday evening, or Saturday morning, April 27 th. An educational seminar will be presented on Saturday morning, and the sale will begin at 1 PM. This sale generally attracts about 150 head of outstanding quality seed stock from breeders from coast to coast, and we would expect the offering to be bigger with so many breeders coming for the extended program of events. Following the sale, ADSBS will host a Junior Breeding Sheep Show for youth members. Details will be available at www.Dorper.org. ADSBS has reserved a block of rooms at the Days Inn in Duncan, Oklahoma for nights beginning April 24th through April 28th. To book your room from this block, please call 877361-2506 and use the confirmation code 56265120. The rate is $63 per night for a double room. The block will be available until April 17th, but we encourage you to book early. This will be a great three days of activities at a wonderful facility. Breeders assisting with the courses will be bringing in dozens of Dorpers and White Dorpers for evaluation and discussion. While the courses are not designed as judges training, they certainly will be a good refresher program for ADSBS certified judges as well as for those breeding and raising the breeds. Experienced sheep judges can take both courses, and then the Judges Certification program on Friday afternoon. Fees will be kept reasonable so that everyone can participate. There is a $40 per person registration fee, with participants buying their own meals and those desiring the “Dorpers Into The New Century” South African handbook having the opportunity to purchase the book on-site or in advance for $40 per copy. Look for the registration form in this issue. Looks like ADSBS will have a record year in 2012! Memberships and transfers are both at all-time highs, and registrations are the highest since 2006. Keep up the great marketing efforts! We have great breeds…we just have to make sure everyone sees them and becomes aware of the strong points! ADSBS will continue the present Dermatosparaxis policy for the coming year. Any White Dorpers or White Dorper percentage animals consigned to any public sales sanctioned by ADSBS must have a negative dermatosparaxis test result from Gene Check. ADSBS members are entitled to discounts on testing ($20 per head). Be sure to note your membership on the testing form. Testing has maintained buyer confidence in White Dorpers, and, to date, no additional bloodlines have uncovered the condition. Happy lambing! One of the most important mottos that any association should recognize is that fact that there is no “I” in team. There is no one member that is more important than another. If an Associations is to be successful, everyone must work together. And that is just what the members of MSRDA did these past months. Members volunteered to Chair committees as follows: Submitted by Elaine Dustin www.msrda.org Fall signifies the end of a hot summer and the beginning of a cold bleak winter. But for the MSRDA it signifies new and exciting re-organization. Starting in September we were delighted with the response we received when we reached out to the membership for their support. Without hesitation members stepped forward to take on the responsibilities of officers, board members, and committee chairs. Promotional brochures were created, as well as a bi-monthly newsletter, to keep all our members informed. In December our Annual Meeting was held and new Officers and Board members were elected. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM CST by President Alan McAnelly. Others participating were Daniel Rivers, Eric Bruns, Judi Mault, Kathy Lewis and Lloyd Wendel. In addition, Directors-electt Bill Kuecker and Darroll Grant participated, as did ADSBS Executive Secretary Douglas Gillespie. Minutes of the September 18, 2012 conference call meeting were accepted as read. Doug Gillespie gave a report on registry activities. We are at new record levels for transfers and memberships, and registrations are running at the highest level since 2006. Ronda has been right out straight, by ADSBS is healthy and trending upward. Since Tom Greene was unable to participate in the call, Doug Gillespie summarized the financial report. Through CRANE CREEK DORPERS & WHITE DORPERS, ccdorpers.com CCD80953, yearling ram *Prolific, year round breeding, *shedding, RR and QR rams for sale *Transport/export services *1000 head ewes *Stephanie Mitcham, 3061 160th St. Sumner, IOWA 50674;Tel: 563-578-5665 sam@netins.net www.ccdorpers.com 14 October, ADSBS was running over $30,000 in income over expenses. November and December bring in the bulk of dues income, so that number will increase before year’s end. Doug also reported that due to the strong cash-flow, he and Ronda had found it was not necessary to cash in any certificates of deposit, as ADSBS had about $100,000 in cash on hand and available for projects. Old Business: Doug Gillespie and Alan McAnelly had distributed a plan for ADSBS to edit and produce a Breeder & Judges Handbook, explaining the breed standard, in 2013 in place of publishing a Dorper Journal. The first edition is budgeted to essentially break even with $17,500 in income and $17,810 in expenses, depending upon the number of pages. ADSBS would contract with graphic designer Lisa Scramlin of St. Louis, MO to serve as Editor, and ADSBS Director Ron Guenther would be the Breed Consultant to oversee the project. Advertising would be sold. One thousand copies would be printed, with each ADSBS member receiving a free copy, advertisers receiving a few extra copies, and 200 copies to sell at $25 each. Future editions would be much cheaper to produce as the breed standard pages would be essentially the same. After discussion it was MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED to approve this project, and include it in the 2013 ADSBS operating budget. Paul Lewis from Oregon had submitted a request to ADSBS to fund a seminar at the West Coast Production Sale, May 25-26, 2013 in Red Bluff, California. After discussion this matter was tabled until the January meeting. Bill Kuecker reported on the culinary program with Schoolcraft College. He also reported on the plans to develop a USDA Process Verified Certified Dorper Lamb program under the licensing of ADSBS. A preliminary report will be ready for the board during first quarter of 2013. Darroll Grant reported on dermatosparaxis testing. 1,602 White Dorpers have been tested so far in 2012, and 221 head were found to be carriers or 13.8 percent of those tested. We expect those numbers to continue declining as carriers are eliminated from the flocks. Meeting was adjourned at 7:57 PM CST. Respectfully Submitted, Douglas P. Breeders from throughout the country, but from Texas in particular, expressing concern that judges were selecting “wether-type” sheep in a breeding sheep competition. These “wether-type” sheep are generally cylindricalbodied, with parallel lines from topline and underline. These animals’ design is actually completely contrary to the desirable big-barreled look of the Dorper and White Dorper. The ADSBS Board is extremely concerned by this trend, and voted to send this letter to all ADSBS certified judges: November 26, 2012 Dear Certified Dorper Judge: First, on behalf of the American Dorper Sheep Breeders Society, let me thank you for your interest in Dorpers and White Dorpers, and for your acceptance of the challenges for serving as a judge for our breeds. We appreciate your astute understanding of the breed standard, and your ability to apply it “real time” in the show ring. The ADSBS Board of Directors has received comments from breeders and witnessed ourselves a disturbing trend by some judges evaluating Dorpers and White Dorpers. This appears to be an attempt to select individuals for high placing that fit the profile of other popular American breeds, but do not follow the Dorper/White Dorper breed standard. This “Americanization” of our breeds is undesirable, as the ADSBS Board has once again reinforced its strong view that the South African breed standard is what all Dorpers and White Dorpers should be evaluated against. We would refer you to the 4th Edition of the South African training manual Dorpers Into The New Century, by Dolf Lategan. Specifically, page 49, as part of the Breed Standard of Excellence, in reference to the barrel of the Dorper/White Dorper: The ideal is a long, deep, wide body, ribs well sprung, loin broad and full. The sheep must have a long straight back and not have a Devil’s grip. A slight dip behind the shoulders is permissible. In the discussion that follows, Lategan provides sketches of the male shape (wedge shaped, heavier towards the front) RAISING PUREBRED AND PERCENTAGE WHITE DORPER SHEEP IN NORTH CAROLINA. Contact: Ted Katsigianis Vice President of Agriculture The Biltmore Company 1 North Pack Square Asheville, NC 28801 Telephone: 828-225-6156 Email:tkatsigianis@biltmore.com 16 www.dorper.org Winter 2013 and the female shape (wedge shaped, heavier towards the back) and the four photographs provided here depict that ideal shape. The training manual also states “A cylindrical shape is not the ideal and we do discriminate against it especially as far as type is concerned. Let’s have an underline that shows good depth. We all recognize the influence that the club lamb market has throughout the American purebred sheep industry. ADSBS does not wish to see the Dorper/White Dorper selection criteria altered to fit that market. While individuals showing those profile traits may have a place in the marketplace, they are to be discriminated against in the seed stock show ring. They are not the ideal, in fact as stated above they are to be discriminated against. The Dorper/White Dorper is unique in the American sheep industry for its ability to produce fast-gaining lambs for market on a largely roughage diet in a variety of harsh conditions. The characteristics which make this possible are very much part of the aforementioned discussion. We must not lose these traits! We ask that as you judge Dorpers/White Dorpers as a certified judge, that you reinforce all categories of the South African breed standard that has made the breeds what they are. Again our thanks for the difficult job you have undertaken to evaluate our breeds that are certainly out of the mainstream in the United States purebred sheep industry. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to direct them to Ron Guenther, who chairs our Judges Committee (guenther@live.com or 614-216-6268). Sincerely, Alan McAnelly, President American Dorper Sheep Breeders Society mail@hamiltonsheep.com The board continues to explore additional mechanisms to ensure that judges evaluate our animals by using the breed standard, and not the trends seen in other breeds. Obviously our certification program has not been completely successful in training judges correctly. Stay tuned for the announcement of additional steps to maintain the integrity of our breeds.
