Over 30 sculptures created by some of the Midwest’s best known and unknown sculptors bring life to the streets of Effingham as part of the annual Sculpture on the Avenues outdoor exhibition. Going into its 10th year, Sculpture on the Avenues is a self-guided walking tour that begins at Effingham City Hall, located at 201 E. Jefferson Ave. From there, the exhibition winds in and out of Downtown Effingham. The Sculpture on the Avenue program began in 1997 when the Effingham Community Committee for the Arts formed and raised over $60,000 to commission Leonardo Nierman’s Flame of Hope. The Flame of Hope stands prominently in front of the west entrance of City Hall and is the first piece featured on the walking tour. Each year, new sculptures are chosen with the thought of capturing the imagination and appealing to a variety of tastes. There’s fun, whimsy and stark lines and edges - reality and abstract, as well. The pieces are placed to be accessible, to be touched, and to be viewed from every angle. Residents and visitors wholeheartedly embrace the event. Several sculptures have found permanent homes in Effingham and the surrounding area. An informative brochure, which facilitates a walking tour, is available at Effingham hotels, downtown businesses, the Effingham Tourism Office, and in a convenient display outside City Hall at 201 E. Jefferson Ave. The guide to the Sculptures can also be downloaded at www.visiteffinghamil.com. 800-772-0750 www.visiteffinghamil.com 29 Annual Artisan Fair & Wine Tasting Downtown Effingham, Exit 159/162 U.S. 45 and Jefferson, Old Courthouse The 2009 Annual Artisan Fair will include two-days of activities that is sure to be fun for the entire family. “Arts and Hearts” will be held from 5 to 10 pm Friday, April 24. The courthouse, located on the square in downtown Effingham, was the fourth one built in Effingham County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historical structure was built in Second Empire style and is made of brick, stone and wood with 18-inch outside walls. Special features of the building are stone window headers with keystones above each window and a mansard roof with dormers. The building was the working courthouse for Effingham County up until 2007, when Effingham County constructed a new courthouse two blocks west of this structure. Monuments recognizing the history of the city and county can also be viewed on the lawn surrounding the historic courthouse. Over the years, there have been several theories on how Effingham was named. One suggests it was to honor Lord Effingham, a British noble, who resigned his commission rather than take up arms against the colonies in the Revolutionary War. A monument to Lord Effingham stands on the northeast corner of the courthouse square. The southwest corner of the square is dedicated to honoring war veterans of WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The courthouse is the site of special events, including the Artisan Fair and Old Fashion Christmas. For more information, call 800-772-0750. Heart Theatre 133 E. Jefferson Ave. Across the street from the old courthouse is the Heart Theatre, a 1930’s landmark. The theatre is one of two examples in Effingham of the Art Deco style that was popular from 1920 to 1940. The cream and maroon terra-cotta tiles are a perfect foil for the neon and marquee lights. 800-772-0750 37 Dr. Charles M. Wright House Jackson and Main, Altamont, Exit Dr. C. M. Wright built this stately Renaissance revival home in 1889. It was subsequently owned by his son, also a doctor, and his grandson, an attorney. The lineage ended with the third Mr. Wright, who donated his home as a museum. Many of the original furnishings, including carpets, remain in the 18 rooms on the tour. The doctor’s surgery, the nursery and library are particularly memorable. Special events are held each year at the mansion, including a Wine Tasting on Sept. 19 and a Christmas Tree Walk the last weekend of November and the first weekend of December. 618-483-6397 www.wrightmansion.org Monastery Museum 110 S. Garret, Teutopolis, Exit 159 The museum is a prism into the history of the settlers of the Teutopolis region and the Franciscans who ministered to them. View a dazzling panorama of the early life in this German Catholic community, founded in 1838, and the multitude of religious artifacts left by the Franciscans who first arrived in 1858. The three priests and six brothers, who arrived in 1858, set about building a parish and friary. Today, that monastery houses the antique bibles, hand scribed books and hundreds of other items representative of daily religious life. The furnishings, clothing, toys, utensils and elaborate documents, which are works of art in themselves, on display offer a poignant and amazingly complete look at the lives of Teutopolis’ first residents. Hours are from 12:30 to 4 pm the first Sunday of each month from April to November and by appointment. 217-857-6404 History and Genealogy Cemeteries in this part of Illinois date to the earliest pioneers, who traveled the newly built National Road to a new life in a new land. Oakridge Cemetery East Jefferson Ave, Exit 159 This non-denominational city cemetery is the final resting place of many fascinating figures from Effingham’s stories past. Ada Kepley, the first woman law graduate in the United States. Mrs. Kepley was an ardent advocate of women’s rights and friend of Susan B. Anthony. She published a newspaper, and wrote books and songs. Mrs. Kepley was also a zealous prohibitionist, whose numerous detractors chafed at her activism. One was driven to make an attempt on her life! Lying in wait for the Kepleys, to return home late one night, the perpetrator shot at, but missed, Mrs. Kepley as she ascended the stairs to her downtown home. Mrs. Kepley was not unscathed, as unfortunately, the shot hit her dog. Col. John J. Funkhouser, a Civil War veteran, was offered the office of Secretary of War by President Grant, but he declined. He later became the first mayor of Effingham. Col. Mary (Mother) Newcomb came to Effingham during the Civil War, after her husband, Hiram, enlisted in the 11th Illinois Infantry. She was 44 years old at the time. After Hiram was wounded in battle, Mary brought her husband back to Effingham, but he died shortly after, on February 26, 1862. Fulfilling his dying wish, Mary returned to the regiment to nurse the sick and wounded soldiers until the end of the war. Mary visited the Lincoln White House and had a visit on the porch with Mr. Lincoln. Another resident with a strong Lincoln connection was Catherine (Katie) McPherson Kelly Clutter, who was born in Washington D.C. Katie remained in Washington City while her husband, Tom Kelly, was on detached duty during the Civil War. Katie - a personal friend of Mary Todd Lincoln - frequently cared for “Little Tad.” Tom Kelly died in 1876, and in 1879, Katie married Noah D. Clutter of Effingham. Meet these and many other fascinating figures during the annual cemetery walk, “Glimpses of the Past.” The Grand Army of the Republic soldiers memorial is located in the north section of Oakridge Cemetery. Historical figures can be seen at many of Effingham’s annual events, including the Old Fashion Christmas on the old Courthouse Square the Sunday after Thanksgiving. 41 45 National Road It was a superhighway of dirt, rock, and timber. In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson signed legislation creating a National Road funded solely by the federal government, a first at the time. With westward expansion on the lips of a nation busting at the seams, this road would provide a route from Cumberland, Maryland to Pennsylvania, Virginia (later West Virginia), Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Because of its point of origin, it was often referred to as the Cumberland Trail although other popular names included the National Pike, the National Trail, and the National Road. Albert Gallatin, Jefferson’s Secretary of the Treasury, championed the project by securing funding through the sale of western public lands to settlers. Construction began in 1811 and after years of tedious labor the project reached Illinois where Joseph Shriver began surveying in 1828 from the Indiana border to the Mississippi River. Shriver noted the scarcity of homes and even 42 had an encounter with Indians. The path of the road brought it to Vandalia, our state capitol from 1819 until 1839. William C. Greenup served as construction superintendent in Illinois and was faced with a monumental challenge of finding laborers. With the exception of the occasional crushed rock or timber-laden “corduroy” sections, the Illinois National Road was a dirt path dotted with tree stumps cut low enough that a wagon could easily navigate over them. A heavy rain would transform the National Road to a muddy trail sometimes forcing travelers to find an alternative path. People came to Illinois on the National Road in wagons, stagecoaches, and horseback. Sometimes they would stop at an inn for a hot meal and to visit with other travelers. Beds were at a premium so it wasn’t unusual to sleep on the floor. Transporting goods by river was now passé as the National Road provided a new route for commerce. Conestoga wagons, the forerunner to the semi-truck, brought valuable goods to the settlers and towns that began popping up along the road. A typical Conestoga was 26 feet long, twelve feet high, and weighed more than a ton. Not wanting to surrender valuable space, the teamster driving the rig often sat on an exterior lazy board near the handbrake. From 1830 to 1840, Illinois’ population more than doubled with the National Road playing a major role. The railroad’s emergence in the 1850s plus the lack of maintenance of the National Road saw its popularity deteriorate. However, by the early 20th century the rise of the automobile and bicycle created a demand for improved roads. The National Road rose from the transportation scrapbook to become the blueprint for an ocean to ocean route known as U.S. Route 40. Today the Illinois National Road stretches 164 miles from the Indiana border to the Mississippi River in East St. Louis and encompasses seven counties--Clark, Cumberland, Effingham, Fayette, Bond, Madison, and St. Clair. Many of the communities owe its origin to the National Road bringing the settlers that turned prairieland to civilization. The Illinois National Road Association promotes the roadway and activities on the roadway. For more information on the roadway or on upcoming events, visit www.nationalraod.org or call 888-2680042.
