Carlson, a PGA professional, spent the first three years of his time at Bocaire Country Club as golf pro. He later went on to become general manager and is now in his second year as CEO. While he’s overseen several major improvements to the club, he said he is thrilled to present a brand new clubhouse to Bocaire Country Club’s members. “The clubhouse opened to the membership Jan. 28,” Carlson said. “It is an extension of each member’s home and we wanted to make a statement with something warm and inviting for our members and guests.” Carlson took on the job of finding the ideal interior designer to transform Bocaire Country Club’s clubhouse into a truly magnificent space that would appeal to current and future members. He didn’t want the club to look like other country clubs or represent anything that had been done before. He sought a customized look for Bocaire in a league all its own. From eye-catching sconces and ceiling fixtures to gorgeous custom carpets and reflection pools at its main entrance, the clubhouse at Bocaire Country Club is an oasis. “We had a design off between three firms to get this job,” Carlson said. “Edward Cox Interiors out of Miami just completed the job and they’ve been wonderful to work with. We’re making a very bold statement and the redesign of this club is very contemporary for what we’ve known and the members are very excited about it.” Bocaire Country Club home sales continue to soar. Carlson attributes it not only to the amazing amenities and five-star service at the club, but also to the homes themselves. “The property here essentially sells itself. The lot sizes and homes are large and the density is very light,” Carlson said. “It’s a unique property. There are no tees times and there’s always a table available at dinner.” The boutique size of the club also allows members to receive a more exclusive experience, 24/7. “What also sets us apart from other country clubs is that we’re half the size of a typical club,” Carlson said. “The attention to detail and personal service you get from members of staff here is a priority. We not only know your names, but we know your children and grandchildren’s names and where they’re going to school and what they’re doing. That’s what this environment allows us to do.” Carlson only hires the most capable staff members. “Without a doubt in this business, regardless of which club you’re at, if you don’t have a service heart, you’re not going to make it,” Carlson said. “My job is to hire, train and retain all the very best people who fall under that category and we’ve been able to promote from within. I’m a shining example of that. It’s not easy to do that, but we’ve done that all over this property and that’s led to our success. We have about 85 full time employees who are dedicated to the members’ service.” In addition to the clubhouse, Bocaire Country Club’s members are also enjoying the resort style pool in the club’s luxurious Aquatic Center. “We took the best items we found at other clubs and enhanced that to make it our own here,” Carlson said. “We’ve made the statement that we’re not only a smaller club, but we’re committed to personal service and in the future, MAN WITH A PLAN: CEO Russell Carlson ensures Bocaire Country Club is on course for greatness. TODD ROLLER we’re going to be nothing but that personified. We have 237 homes here. It’s always going to be the place for that discerning golfer who also loves country club and resort style amenities.” The golf course at Bocaire Country Club is also a source of tremendous pride for Carlson. “I love our golf course. Our practice facilities are great and you’re not just limited to the practice areas,” Carlson said. “We do less than 17,000 rounds of a golf a year so you can always get out on the course when you want to.” Giving back to the community is also important to Carlson and the members of Bocaire. “We do a huge Play for P.I.N.K. event here over the past 10 years. This club goes out of its way to support many charitable causes,” Carlson said. “We salute the Wounded Warriors and raised $37,000 in our first event for them. Members band together to form these groups and support these causes and they’re all very well received.” Even though there have been so many recent enhancements to Bocaire Country Club, the club will continue to get better and better. “I love this club because I realize the potential here and that is very invigorating. Reaching what I believe is the club’s potential is very rewarding and we’ve been able to do that and we’ve had no dues increase in four years,” Carlson said. “I’m very proud of that. When you can maximize your potential in any entity in this world, that’s always a positive thing.” Club News Stylish Solutions For Your Window Treatments SHOWCASE Australia. He purchased a lot in the ‘90s, built his own home there and has been thrilled with the lifestyle. “We’re an intimate club with 237 homes. Everyone knows each other and the staff knows everyone by name,” Padover said. “We offer all the facilities of a large club and we offer additional services that aren’t possible at a large club. We have no tee times for golf, a member is never closed out from our dining facilities and we offer formal dining as well as casual dining.” With major exterior and interior renovations to Bocaire’s clubhouse, Padover isn’t surprised to see a high demand for homes. “We’re selling a lot of homes and getting a lot of new people and younger families with children,” he said. Now in his second year as President of Bocaire Country Club, Padover continues to embrace his role. “I preside over the board meetings, assign the different chairman to committees and I oversee what they do and I think of new policies to bring the club into the future. We have to make changes because the demographics are changing,” Padover said. “I’ve been involved with the renovation of the whole club for the past five years and I’m co-chairman of the building committee.” While Padover was an avid golfer and now frequents the fitness center, his favorite part of living at Bocaire has everything to do with the members. “The best part of living here is the people,” Padover said. TODD ROLLER Maggie Green enjoys working at a country club she says sells itself. Green, who started at Bocaire Country Club eight years ago, serves as assistant general manager and membership director, helping folks line up a life inside the club’s gates. “This is a very exciting time to be at Bocaire,” Green said. “We have our new dining venue, The Bistro, a new aquatic center, guardhouse, new roadway leading up to the club, a tot lot for children, half basketball court, renovated tennis courts and our newly renovated clubhouse.” Green works closely with area realtors to show prospective members the spectacular lifestyle Bocaire has to offer. “We’re on target for a record year for home sales,” said Green, who is originally a computer programmer from London. Green’s impressive computer skills are being well utilized by Bocaire as she maintains the member website, produces all marketing materials for the club as well as the club bulletin. She also enjoys creating fliers for the club’s many social activities such as Valentine’s Day dinner dances and Halloween parties. “For a boutique-size country club, we offer a vast range of sporty and social events. We have a very busy calendar,” Green said. While Green enjoys the variety of her job and the fact that no two days are ever the same, meeting the members is the highlight. “Bocaire is a wonderful place to work. I love coming to work and I love the interaction with our members,” Green said. “We don’t have a high turnover of staff here, which goes a long way in saying how great Bocaire is. We’re attracting younger families and we’re in the top-rated school area. Prospective members feel a sense of warmth from the minute they drive up to our gates. “ With the addition of the aquatic complex, fitness center and more, Green is confident new membership will continue to rise. “We have so much to offer at Bocaire,” she said. “We have 237 custom estate homes here on a minimum of a third of an acre and each home is a minimum of 3,000 square feet. Our dining is incredible here. With the recent opening of our newly renovated clubhouse, Bocaire just gets better and better.” To inquire about how you can make the Bocaire Country Club lifestyle your own, contact Maggie Green at 561-998-1615 or email her at membership@ bocairecc.com. TODD ROLLER BY JOANIE COX-HENRY Boca Piquant 16 You can’t miss Bob Grossman’s smiling face out on one of Bocaire Country Club’s five newly resurfaced Har-Tru tennis courts. The tennis veteran has been instructing at Bocaire since 2000 and enjoys teaching tennis to Bocaire members of all ages. “The tennis program at Bocaire is definitely growing,” said Grossman. “We do round-robins and in-house events as well as tennis clinic and a tennis camp for kids.” Grossman also collaborates closely with Fitness Director Claudia Leonard to ensure his players are getting the optimal exercise and stretching routines to improve their tennis games. “We’re always putting together great events for our members,” Grossman said. “Women’s member guest games are always big for us so we plan on hosting more of those.” While most country club tennis courts are a complicated waiting game, Bocaire’s members always come first. “Our members appreciate that if they want to play a game, they can immediately get a game together whether they have a partner or not. One of us will fill in to play with a member—whether it’s myself or assistant tennis pro Kumiko Hisamoto. We make our members feel at home and guarantee them a game.” Since 2014 is now in full swing, here are Grossman’s four tennis tips to improve your score this year: 1. Make preparation a habit! As soon as you recognize which side the ball is coming to, get your racquet back and turn your body! It’s a common mistake for club players to take so long to get their racquet back and shoulders turned that they often end up playing catch-up with the ball. So remember when the racquet is back early, you will have better balance and your stroke will be smoother. 2. Take little steps! Performing small adjustment steps will help you get in better position for each shot. Club level players often have trouble getting organized on shots in close to them. That’s because they don’t take the little adjustment steps necessary to put themselves in the best possible hitting position. The reason players don’t use adjustments steps is that it’s a lot of work. Most players think that if they can get their racquet on the ball that they’ve done enough moving. Just remember when you use those adjustment steps to get in a position where you have the most leverage and best balance – you hit the best ball. 3. Hit big on big points! On big points, players often have a tendency to get a little tight. I notice one of two reactions that are common to the everyday player. First, they would swing with everything they had, trying to end the point quickly when the shot called for them to ease up a bit. Second, they would get tentative and push a ball that they needed to hit out on. The best strategy in my mind is to stay somewhere in the middle on the big shots. Try to stay in the big points with smart, safe but effective shots until you have the opening and then take advantage of the opportunity when it comes. When serving, think depth not power! Sure, we all want to hit that first serve booming ace whenever possible but keeping the ball deep on the second serve is the key to preventing your opponent from getting the upper hand. Even if you happen to have spin on your serve, if it consistently lands short then your opponent controls the court. Just remember to reach up and hit your serve at full extension and be sure to avoid pulling your head down before contact – that should help keep it deep. If you are still intent on hitting the first serve hard, just remember to keep a loose grip until point of contact for maximum acceleration through the ball. 17 SWEET RETREAT: The Aquatic Center at Bocaire Country Club is a relaxing, temperature-controlled pool area with two 75-foot dedicated lap lanes and a tranquil spa. TODD ROLLER BY JOANIE COX-HENRY Boca Piquant 20 Bocaire Country Club members have access to some of the greatest workouts on earth, thanks to Fitness Director Claudia Leonard. The longtime aerialist and Circus Experience performer has been teaching and toning at Bocaire since 2010. “Our motto here is to improve the quality of life through physical fitness,” said Leonard, who has worked in the fitness industry for more than 30 years, earned five Florida titles as a competitive body builder and scored a national championship as a springboard and platform diver. “We like to empower the individual through the arts of physical fitness and the circus. I try to incorporate some of those aspects of the circus, such as balance and coordination, into our fitness classes here.” Members can learn to improve hand-eye coordination through juggling, which Leonard teaches. Stretching classes, yoga, Pilates, pump and sculpt and fitness fusion are some classes available to members. She also works with the Florida Atlantic University exercise science program to get the best instructors to teach at the club. “We have something for everyone. We just built a 109,000-gallon pool and we’re expanding on that,” Leonard said. “We have great aqua classes. We’re also incorporating more activities for kids at our fitness center. We have a family Zumba class on Sundays and we’re growing with our dynamic membership. We have tripled in membership since I came on board with all our different programs.” With three personal trainers, programs especially developed for golf and tennis and post-physical therapy exercise routines for members to continue strengthening their bodies, the fitness program at Bocaire is becoming a leader in the local club industry. “We had a great junior camp during the holiday season with more children than we’ve ever had,” Leonard said. “We have three generations working out here at once and it’s really wonderful.” The Boca Raton resident and devoted mom has also been collaborating with Executive Chef Kevin Marcelle on developing more spa-like dining options with nutritionally dense meal choices. “Bocaire’s members are great and this was truly the club I always wanted to work at,” Leonard said. “We give a lot and we help our members if they want to improve their golf game or swing or tennis game. Gullet has been at the job for more than five years and is proud of all that the club has to offer. “The golf program here is constantly changing and growing,” Gullett said. “We promote it to all different age groups here. We have a lot of couples golf and ladies and men’s golf and we’re currently working on developing a junior golf program starting with junior clinics on Saturdays. We have quite a few members with very young children who are not quite golfing age yet, but getting there.” Gullett, who has been playing golf more than 30 years and started at age 8, is always inspired by and impressed with the philanthropic spirit of Bocaire Country Club’s members. “We do a huge Play for P.I.N.K. tournament with typically 120 players,” Gullett said. “Membership really supports that. We also have a Wounded Warrior Project event we’re raising money for. Members run those tournaments. We have tremendous member support for those events.” Bocaire Country Club has been hosting events in support of Play for P.I.N.K. since 2002 and so far, the club has raised more than $486,000 for the cause. Members can also find everything they need to outfit their golf game at Bocaire Country Club’s pro shop. Gullett is in charge of stocking the shop with the latest merchandise from coveted brands such as Titleist, Footjoy, Ping, Polo, Donald Ross, Oxford Golf and more. “We have three pros here and we do club fittings along with lessons,” Gullett said. “We also have quite a few mixed events here for golf including two, ninehole mixers a month in season and one 18-hole mixer in season and we continue having mixed events during the summer months.” Best of all, members at Bocaire can enjoy the 18-hole, Bermuda grass Joe Lee designed golf course basically whenever they desire, since there are no tee times. “The golf program here will continue to grow. The golf course was renovated here about seven years ago along with several other amenities so the club is constantly evolving and attracting new members. This course is very golfer friendly. There are some very tough holes, but all types of golfers should enjoy their golfing experience here,” Gullett said. “A lot more families are moving in and you’ll be seeing more family golf in upcoming years.” For members interested in having a more technical analysis of their golf games, Gullett uses iPad video for golf lessons, if a member is interested in having their golf swing on record. “Bocaire is about personal service. This is a no tee time club, which is a really big deal,” said Gullett, who grew up in Oklahoma and now resides in Deerfield Beach. “We offer individual lessons, group lessons and free clinics throughout season. We also have a ‘Play with a pro’ program for ladies golf where an ongoing tournament occurs throughout the season and the ladies sign up to play with one of us and we play against one another. It’s really neat.” SWING KID: Golf at Bocaire Country Club is in a new league thanks to Jeff Gullett. TODD ROLLER BY JOANIE COX-HENRY Boca Piquant 26 Executive Chef Kevin Marcelle has been whipping up delectable feasts for Bocaire Country Club members since 2009. This year, he intends to add even more exciting fare to the already mouth-watering mix. “We do a little bit of everything here to ensure our members have the variety they want,” Marcelle said. “Members love our seafood nights, which include two-pound lobsters and stone crabs, as well as our Italian and Asian-themed nights.” Steakhouse night is also popular with members along with porterhouse night, where a juicy 36-ounce porterhouse steak for two is served and carved tableside by the chef. “All of our meats are prime quality and if a member wants something that is not on the menu, we get it for them,” Marcelle said. Bocaire is also hosting a new Rendezvous night, which will be an intimate and casual dining experience in the bar lounge. Members will be able to enjoy small plates, such as Asian lettuce wraps, and entrees, such as mussels, pork sliders and decadent desserts, including baked apple strudel and chocolate cake. “It’s going to be more of a casual setting so we can further diversify our dining options at Bocaire and cater to our growing membership’s needs,” Marcelle said. While Marcelle is constantly studying food trends and seeking out new items for Bocaire’s menu and lavish buffet, he also welcomes input from his kitchen staff as well as member suggestions. “Our staff is very well trained and our menu is always changing with exciting choices,” Marcelle said. “We also always cater to our members’ needs and we’re very open to their recommendations. This year, we’re also working on plate design and presentation.” From casino nights to Super Bowl parties to wine and martini nights, Marcelle, who graduated from the Culinary Arts program at Fox Valley Technical College in Wisconsin, is always paying close attention to detail. “I enjoy working in the kitchen and I like to oversee what’s going on,” he said. “I’m a very hands-on person and this club only serves the highest quality food. We use local vendors for our produce and seafood and never use frozen fish or vegetables. Our pastry chef also does an incredible job baking fresh desserts for members. Since the rebuilding of Bocaire’s pool area, we’ve also been able to expand outdoor dining amenities as well.” KITCHEN DREAM TEAM: From left, Pastry Chef Sandra Anderson, Executive Sous Chef Barry Moss, Executive Chef Kevin Marcelle, Chef Garde Manager Steve Cohen and Sous Chef Joel Alvarado. SUBMITTED PHOTO BY JOANIE COX-HENRY Boca Piquant 32 On Jan. 14, Mariposa Restaurant inside Neiman Marcus in Boca Raton was turned into a wonderland of Giorgio Armani makeovers thanks to Tim Quinn. Quinn, who is a cancer survivor and inspiring cancer awareness advocate hosted the sold out event that benefited The Pap Corps, Champions for Cancer Research. As National Director of Creative Artistry for Giorgio Armani Beauty, Quinn has traveled the globe doing makeup for Glenn Close, Debra Messing, Kim Cattrall, Tara Reid, Gwen Stefani, Jordana Brewster, Kate Bosworth and many other stars. For his Neiman Marcus event, he was hot off the plane from a trip to The Golden Globes, where he was loving Cate Blanchett’s fresh, minimalista spring makeup look. Quinn, who has been with Giorgio Armani Beauty since its 2001 launch, now splits his time between his intracoastal home in Boca Raton, office in New York and home in Boston. “My parents also live in Boca and I absolutely love it here,” Quinn said. “I love doing this to support any cancer research.” Quinn has been cancer free since 2008, but his journey to help others never ceases. “Working with L’Oreal and Armani, I’ve been very fortunate because they’re great about me continuing my grassroots efforts to increase cancer awareness,” Quinn said. “As I started sharing my story, I found most men don’t talk about cancer. When I was first diagnosed, I was shocked because I had never been sick and the word ‘chemo’ just really scared me. The tumor grew really quickly. I had testicular cancer in my pelvis and it was really aggressive.” While Quinn couldn’t change his cancer diagnosis, he did make a vow to handle the illness on his terms. “I traded in my Jaguar for a Mercedes station wagon, which I called my ambulance and after treatment, I would just lay down in the back of it because I was in so much pain,” Quinn said. “And I also learned the importance of finding a doctor who really gets you from my friend Farrah Fawcett.” After months of chemo and radiation, Quinn admits he never felt discriminated against until he got sick. “I’ve always been tan and I was losing my tan and not looking like myself and feeling terrible,” Quinn said. “Then I was very upset about losing my hair. People around me told me I needed good hats and a good sense of humor to get through it. I took their advice and made everything around me pretty.” During his stay at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Quinn used his beautifying talents to bring joy to the nurses and patients surrounding him. “I would wheel my IV pole into the sunny part of the hallway, which I started calling my office, and I would teach other patients and nurses on my floor how to look beautiful with makeup tips and more. Raising money to help cancer patients is important but so is raising selfesteems of people while they’re going through it. If you’re not feeling great about yourself, you can’t fight the battle you need to fight.” For more on Quinn, follow his tweets @TimQuinnBeauty. Fashion BOCA RATON WOMAN TAKES COMFORT TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH SHOE LINE SHOE-INVERSE: Design Comfort Shoes leaves local women plenty of options in sassy colors to stay well-heeled this spring. BY JOANIE COX-HENRY The right pair of shoes can change your life. Just ask Cinderella. But too often, beautiful heels that don’t leave you barefoot by the end of the night, crawling toward the door are just another fairy tale. However, Boca Raton shoe designer Ilene Greenberg wants to make your feet live happily ever after, one step at a time. Greenberg is President and CEO of Design Comfort Shoes. Her line of women’s heels offers a gel footbed in each shoe, comfort stretch material to ease bunion pain and slip resistant rubber outer soles. “I launched the company in 2011, and spent the past two years working with a German engineering and design firm to create prototypes until the designs really got to where they needed to be,” Greenberg said. “I abused my feet for so long walking in uncomfortable heels it was difficult to find shoes that fit. I soon realized I wasn’t alone.” Greenberg’s current collection is made up of peep toe sling backs and ankle strap peep toes in exciting colors from red snakeskin to yellow leather. Each shoe has a 4-inch heel, but with the platform balancing out the bottom of the shoe, it takes about an inch off. “I study shoes styles here and in Europe,” Greenberg said. “Vibrant colors are always in and I wanted to keep my shoes somewhat classic. My current line is geared for spring 2014. The leathers are brought in from Italy and they’re a wonderful quality.” While Greenberg has gained inspiration from shoes kings, such as Manolo Blahnik and Vince Camuto, she still appreciates their creations. “I love Louboutins and Ferragamos and I hope no one gives those up,” Greenberg added. “ I just want people to understand there’s an alternative out there built for comfort and style. You don’t have to sacrifice style to be comfortable.” Currently available in sizes 6 to 10, Design Comfort Shoes cost $245$249 and are sold on Designcomfortshoes.com. The “Stacey” shoe, which is a luxurious leather sling-back, is her best selling style. “We’re building these shoes with the intent that you can wear them longer than you can typically wear a pair of heels,” Greenberg said. “People forget when they’re in pain that there’s something wrong. It could be a blister or a callus or you’re changing the bones in the anatomy of your foot. Women with bunions on both feet can wear my shoes.” Greenberg, who loves spending time with her husband and two sons when she’s not designing shoes, still gets a thrill when women walk in her shoes for the first time. “’Wow!’ is typically the first reaction,” Greenberg said. “It’s a great feeling knowing these women are going to put these on and enjoy the night.” Boca Piquant SUBMITTED PHOTOS 33 Travel DREAM SHIP CRYSTAL SERENITY BRINGS ITS SPLENDOR TO SOUTH FLORIDA LUXURY LINER: Crystal Serenity offers a ship packed with the ultimate atmosphere and most exquisite accommodations.
