The Kenyan-grown flower was likely headed for a vase in Australia, England, Japan or the United States. Kenya’s cool climate and high altitude make it perfect for growing large, long-lasting roses. (AP) — A Minnesota elementary school has kissed Valentine’s Day goodbye. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, too. Bruce Vento Elementary in St. Paul is joining other public schools in opting out of holiday celebrations as school officials strive to be more culturally sensitive and inclusive. The school has a predominantly Asian and black student body, and English is a second language for more than half of its pupils, who come from a range of faith backgrounds. In a letter to parents last week, Principal Scott Masini said his rationale was to avoid “encroaching on the educational opportunities of others and threatening a culture of tolerance and respect for all.” He acknowledged it would be an unpopular decision for some. “I have come to the difficult decision to discontinue the celebration of the dominant holidays until we can come to a better understanding of how the dominant view will suppress someone else’s view,” he said. The letter drew both criticism and support as it started circulating on social media, with some people praising the policy for its sensitivity to diverse cultures and others decrying it as political correctness. The Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis ran an editorial calling the decision misguided and urged Masini to reconsider. As word spread, the school district issued a statement saying its longstanding policy “discourages programs and festivities that celebrate observances unless they are required by law.” That means government holidays celebrating the birthdays of President George Washington, President Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr., along with Veterans Day, are still OK. You may offer your sympathy online at www.wittyfuneralhome.com By DENISE LAVOIE AP Legal Affairs Writer BOSTON (AP) — A judge has granted a new trial to a man convicted of killing a 10-year-old Boston girl while shooting at rival gang members. Joseph Cousin was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2002 fatal shooting of Trina Persad as she and her siblings left a park in the Roxbury section of Boston. Prosecutors said the girl was shot in the face with a sawed-off shotgun fired by Cousin, then a member of the MagnoliaIntervale-Columbia gang. The park was named after another child, Jermaine Goffigan, 9, who was killed when he was caught in gang crossfire in 1994. Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said he will appeal the ruling from Judge Janet Sanders. The judge’s ruling, dated Wednesday, found that an attorney for Cousin had a conflict of interest because he represented Boston police officers before and during the time he represented Cousin at his second trial. Cousin’s first trial ended in a mistrial. “The problem is that White had an economic or personal interest, at the time he represented Cousin, in remaining on good terms with the Boston Police Department, thus creating a substantial risk that the manner in which he represented Cousin could materially and adversely be affected,” Sanders wrote in her ruling. Conley criticized the ruling and said it “does not question the integrity of the jury’s verdict or the sufficiency of the evidence.” “The fact remains that Joseph Cousin armed himself with a loaded shotgun, pointed it out the window of a stolen car, and pulled the trigger, killing a 10-year-old girl in a playground named for another murdered child.” Cousin’s appellate lawyer, Robert Shaw Jr., said the judge correctly found that 435 Main St., Suite E 54 Main Street • 2nd Floor Cousin’s trial lawyer had a Athol, MA Gardner • 978-632-9570 conflict of interest. Submitted photo Smithsonian giving visitors a virtual look inside Apollo 11 By JESSICA GRESKO Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — They are bits of space graffiti hidden from the public for decades: a crude calendar, scrawled lunar coordinates and markings warning of a locker containing “smelly waste.” Apollo 11 astronauts left those scribbles inside the spacecraft that took them on their historic mission to the moon in 1969, but now the public will get to see them for the first time. National Air and Space Museum officials presented a preview Thursday of a virtual 3-D model that will allow the public a look inside the car-sized Apollo 11 command module. No longer will the public have to try to peer inside through one of the capsule’s small windows or hatch. The new model will allow Agenda PETERSHAM —The selectboard will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall lower level with the following agenda: Call to order. Minutes. New business. anyone to examine the craft’s controls and see writing left by its three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. (Aldrin says he’s pretty sure the calendar was Collins’ handiwork.) Some of the markings left by the astronauts have to do with maneuvers they had to make to reach the moon, information it was easier to have written near the craft’s instruments. Others writings are less technical: “launch day urine bags” reads an inscription on one locker. On another: “smelly waste.” “They just wanted to warn themselves that this is probably a locker that they should probably leave closed until after the mission was over,” said Allan Needell, a curator of space history at the Smithsonian who oversees Apollo artifacts. The Apollo 11 command module, called “Columbia,” has been one of the star attractions at the National Air and Space Museum since its opening in 1976. But climbing inside has never been allowed. Even curators have been reluctant to go inside and risk damaging it. The model expected to be available online this summer will let the public maneuver around the craft themselves and even print their own 3-D model of it. Eventually, a virtual reality experience will let visitors feel like they’re sitting inside the capsule. To make the model, experts spent two weeks scanning the inside and outside of the craft with lasers. They also took thousands of pictures. Needell, who has overseen study on the command module for almost 20 years, says even he saw new things during the model’s creation. One piece of astronaut graffiti curators found written on a wall was a crude calendar of July 1969. It begins on the day the craft launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral, July 16, 1969, and ends with the day the craft returned to Earth, July 24, the only day that is not crossed off. Needell says that in space, the astronauts wouldn’t have sunrise and sunset to keep track of the day, so the calendar would have helped. Needell said he called Apollo 11’s two living astronauts, 85-year-old Michael Collins and 86-year-old Buzz Aldrin, to ask about the writings. Aldrin felt the calendar “sounds like something Mike would have done,” but it is still “a puzzle,” Needell said. It was Collins who was alone in “Columbia” while Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, who died in 2012, descended to the moon’s surface. There’s nothing special written on July 20 — the day Armstrong became the first man on the moon. On the capsule’s calendar, it’s just another day that’s crossed out. Dear Pet Talk: What is the most puppies a dog should have in order to stay healthy? — Jaden Diaz-Rodruguez; Mrs. Bourque’s Fourth Grade, South Street Elementary School, Fitchburg Dear Jaden: The answer is ZERO. Dogs and cats (like humans and other mammals) do not have to “have babies” in order to be healthy. Having offspring actually stresses an animal — particularly if they have babies when they are very young, very old, or very often. Cats can have three litters a year — which is why it is crucial to identify and capture stray and feral cats to limit the population. If you get your female dog neutered early on, she will have the maximum health benefits against certain kinds of mammary cancer. Neutering your female dog at any age also prevents: unwanted pregnancy, uterine infection, prolapse of the vagina or cancer of the uterus or ovary. Some animals have a difficult time when giving birth – and may require an emergency csection (very expensive) to get the last baby out. Also, there may be babies that are the “runt” and are unlikely to survive. Those of us who work with animals have seen plenty of “runts” in both dogs and cats, and they usually have a short, brief life. Thank you for a great question. Chase, Jr., Publisher Deborrah L. Porter, Editor Jacqueline Caron, Advertising Manager Robert A. Perkins, Production Manager Emeritus Obama’s Wishful Budget Can’t be Taken Seriously W hen President Obama submitted his proposed budget one year ago, he claimed that he wanted to do away with the “mindless austerity” of the sequestration, which had provided some measure of limitation on government spending. Then in December, aided and abetted by a Republican-controlled Congress, he eradicated those minor restrictions and replaced mindless austerity with clueless profligacy. Now he puts forth a budget for the 2017 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, that calls for $4.15 trillion in spending, a $223 billion increase over the current year’s budget. His proposal, curiously released while all eyes are focused on the New Hampshire primary, spans more than 2,300 pages, which, in itself, serves as a testament to the federal government’s bloat and overreach. The president’s budget contains $3 trillion in proposed tax increases over the next 10 years, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The most controversial of these is a $10.25-per-barrel oil tax, which would be used to fund “clean” transit projects and low-carbon technologies such a self-driving cars, which the private sector is already rapidly developing. With oil prices currently hovering around $30 a barrel, that is a roughly 35 percent tax, which experts project would translate to a price hike of about 25 cents per gallon at the pump. Fortunately, this is a nonstarter for congressional Republicans. The president’s budget message reads like his State of the Union addresses, espousing his wish list, from “green energy” subsidies to universal preschool to high-speed rail and increased transit funding to $4 billion for a K-12 computer science program to two years of “free” community college to apprenticeship programs to “encouraging” state paid leave policies — none of which is the province of federal, state and local governments. President Obama’s budget would, once again, expand government control over our lives and further burden current and future generations with debt. It is understandable that a lame-duck president with a somewhat hostile Congress would advance a budget sprinkled with fairy dust, but Obama’s proposal should not be taken seriously with regard to fiscal responsibility. Ex-Irish bank exec to return home By Jeanne Phillips © 2001 Universal Press Syndicate Teen’s heart aches for young cousin in midst of melodrama DEAR ABBY: I am 18 and in my sophomore year of college. A month ago, my family went through some major hardships. It came out that “Uncle Mark” has been cheating on my aunt for years and is moving his mistress to our area. They have two children, a son in elementary school and a daughter, “Dana,” 13. I feel bad for my aunt, but I’m absolutely devastated for Dana. My Uncle Mark has skipped all of her school events in the wake of this mess, and I can’t begin to imagine how disappointed Dana must feel. Uncle Mark is a sociopath. He feels no empathy, manipulates others and has a sadistic streak. Dana was not close to her dad, but since this mess began she’s even less so. Abby, I don’t want my cousin to feel like she’s alone. Since I’m an older teenager, she looks up to me. How can I be supportive, and not intrude in this delicate situation? — SUPPORTIVE COUSIN IN MAINE DEAR SUPPORTIVE: You are kind to want to help. Your cousin is probably experiencing a range of emotions because of the turmoil that’s going on around her family. The kindest thing to do would be to spend time with her when your schedule permits and allow her to vent when she needs to, because she will. ****** DEAR ABBY: I am a 10-year-old girl. I’m good at math and very intelligent. I have two questions: When I’m alone in a dark room, I feel like I have to run out of the room. Why? My second question is, what kind of job can you get without going to college? — SMART SOUTHERN GIRL DEAR SMART SOUTH- ERN GIRL: Many people of every age — especially children and the elderly — have a fear of the dark. That’s why parents use small night lights in their children’s bedrooms and gadgets like The Clapper are popular. Adults may be afraid of tripping or running into furniture. Teens who watch scary movies develop a fear of the dark because they imagine a “monster” is lurking out of sight who might harm them. The solution can be as simple as keeping a night light on or switching a light on as you enter a darkened area. As to what kind of job a person can find without going to college, discuss this with a counselor at your school. College may not be for everyone, but I don’t think it’s likely you’ll get a well-paying job without some advanced education — if not in a college, then in an apprenticeship program or a trade school with a proven high job placement record. ****** DEAR ABBY: My girlfriend and I have been having a huge disagreement lately. Since we can’t seem to settle it, I’m asking for your help. I say that because tomatoes are technically fruits, ketchup is a smoothie. She disagrees because tomatoes are the only fruit in ketchup. Please tell me — is ketchup a smoothie? And if so, why? — SPENCER IN ARIZONA DEAR SPENCER: Your question is a first. In my opinion, ketchup is more a puree than a smoothie. “Smoothie” suggests a beverage that’s drinkable, and I don’t think ketchup qualifies. ****** Contact Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Questions grow over banks as profit warnings pile up in Europe and US PARIS (AP) — Questions are growing over the financial health of banks, particularly in Europe and the U.S., as they face a toxic mix of low economic growth, bad loans and squeezed earnings. France’s Societe Generale became Thursday the latest bank to issue a confidenceshattering profit warning, which helped trigger a new sell-off in financial stocks. The bank saw its share price stumble 12 percent and major rivals like Deutsche Bank and UniCredit saw losses of nearly 10 percent. European banks are not the only ones to suffer. Japanese bank Mitsubishi Financial fell 7 percent on Thursday. In the U.S., Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and Bank of America are down more than 30 percent so far this year. Among the top concerns is that the global economy will weaken more than expected, souring some of the loans that banks have issued to companies around the world — particularly in distressed sectors like the energy industry. U.S. banks have tens of billions of exposure to loans made to energy companies, who have found themselves unable to pay back their debts due to low energy prices. Mike van Dulken, head of research at Accendo Markets, says the latest weakness in bank stocks stems from U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen “warning on current financial market turbulence and suggesting further rate hikes could be delayed, which added to already raised anxiety about BOSTON (AP) — The former chief executive of Anglo Irish Bank, now living in Boston, has dropped his fight against extradition and agreed to return to Ireland to face fraud charges. Irish investigators have accused David Drumm of conspiring to conceal massive losses from shareholders. He left Ireland after the bank collapsed. He moved in 2009 to the Boston suburb of Wellesley, where he was arrested in October. A March 1 extradition hearing had been scheduled. But on Thursday, Drumm agreed to return to Ireland. During a hearing in federal court, Drumm waived his right to an extradition hearing. Drumm said in an affidavit filed with the court that he will continue to contest the charges in the Irish NOT PREPARED courts. When I get in- the health of the global economy.” On Wednesday, Yellen cautioned that global weakness and falling financial markets could depress the U.S. economy’s growth and slow the pace of Fed interest rate hikes. That’s a particular concern as the U.S. economy has been one of the few bright spots in the global economy, which is seeing a slowdown in China and stagnation in Japan and Europe. The slowing of interest rate increases in the U.S. is also bad news for the big banks, which have been waiting anxiously for interest rates to rise. Since the financial crisis, the big banks have largely grown profits by cutting costs. Higher interest rates would mean banks could charge more for their loans. The fact that many central banks keep cutting interest rates, pushing down market lending rates, is further hurting banks by squeezing their profits. Banks mainly make money by lending, so as rates drop, so do earnings. Investors made big bets in the second half of last year that interest rates would rise in the U.S., so to see that bet fail has forced investors to dump bank shares. Letter to the Editor Wellesley’s next president is named quiries from college administrators, I usually give the same answer. This answer is the behavior or lack of responsibility that these people bring into the classroom will be identical to the way they treat patients or perform lab tests. As an example, I had EMT students that performed so poorly in the classroom that I told their academic dean that if I were ever in an accident and one of these students (now an EMT) attempted to treat me that I would deny their services until I was taken to a hospital for treatment. The liberal agenda found at the elementary and high school levels has produced an attitude in students that they can do anything they want and still receive a high grade and scholarly recognition. When backed up by college administrators as to grades, American students are not attaining the disciplinary levels needed to work in a hospital or medical testing laboratory environment. It is no wonder we find so many Asian and European nurses and technicians employed in hospitals and labs throughout the country. Ray Younghans Orange The situation is worsened in some regions, particularly the eurozone and Japan, where the central banks charge commercial banks to deposit money with them. Analysts at Capital Economics say that if the European Central Bank cuts one of its key interest rates further below zero, “this could have adverse effects on banks’ profitability.” Citing ECB chief Mario Draghi’s recent statements that the central bank could take more action in March, the analysts said the ECB “seems prepared to squeeze banks’ profitability further in the short term in order to support the economy.” The Stoxx index of European bank shares is down 20 percent in the last month, when Draghi first mentioned chance that the ECB might try to offer more stimulus in March to lower market rates. In some markets, bad loans are already piling up — or have not been dealt with effectively since the global financial crisis. That’s the case in Italy, where banks are estimated to hold some 350 billion euros in soured loans, or more than 30 percent of the eurozone’s total. The government is trying to mop up those bad loans, but the banks are seeing their shares slide in the meantime. Banca Monte del Paschi, which was down 9 percent on Thursday, is down 60 percent so far this year. More narrowly, some banks are being targeted for complex financial investments they have made in recent years. That’s the case of Deutsche Bank, which has seen the value of its so-called contingent convertible bonds fall sharply. The bank has some 350 million euros in payments on such bonds due by April 30, and had to issue a statement Monday evening assuring it had the money to pay. P.O. Chase, Jr. Publisher ATHOL DAILY NEWS Weekend, February 13-14, 2016 Page 5 Flowers BOSTON — Beacon Hill Roll Call records local senators’ votes on the only roll call from the week of Feb. 8-12. There were no roll calls in the House last week. ILLEGAL HUNTING (S 2069) — The Senate 35-0, approved and sent to the House a bill that would increase penalties for illegal hunting, also known as poaching. Provisions include increasing the fine for hunting bears or bobcats with the aid of a dog or bait from $300-$1,000 to $1,000$5,000; raising the prison sentence from up to six months in prison to a year in prison; and increasing penalties for serial poachers who repeatedly break the law. The measure also makes the Bay State a member of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, a reciprocal agreement among 45 other states that allows state law enforcement agencies to share information with those of other states. It recognizes suspension of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses in all states that are members of the compact. Any person whose license is suspended in a member state would also have his or her license suspended in all other member states in which that conviction would be a violation resulting in suspension. Supporters said the illegal harming or killing of wildlife is a very serious problem that should not be tolerated. They noted the bill would update current state laws created more than 80 years ago, and would increase penalties which currently are so low that they no longer serve as a deterrent. They argued that the increase in penalties would also reduce the black market for bear gall bladders and other animal organs sold for a profit. (A “Yes” vote is for the bill.) Sen. Anne Gobi: Yes; Sen. Stanley Rosenberg: President rarely votes ALSO UP ON BEACON HILL INCREASE JAYWALKING FINES (S 1813) — The Transportation Committee held a hearing on legislation to increase the fine for jaywalking, currently $1 for the first three violations and $2 for fourth and subsequent ones. The bill would increase the fine to $25 for a first offense, $50 for a second offense and $75 for subsequent offenses. Pedestrians are legally permitted to cross streets only in designated areas such as crosswalks. Crossing streets outside of these areas or against “don’t walk” signals is defined as jaywalking. Supporters said citations which would result in the low fines currently in force are rarely issued by police officers and are not an effective deterrent. They said jaywalking has caused many accidents and deaths. YELLOW DOT PROGRAM (S 1889) — The Transportation Committee’s agenda also included a bill that would create the Yellow Dot Program to assist first responders at the scene of a car accident. The voluntary program would allow seniors 62 years of age and older and individuals with a chronic disease to affix a decal with a yellow dot to the rear window on the driver’s side of the motor vehicle. The dot would alert first responders to look in the glove compartment and locate a yellow dot folder compiled by the participant which would include his or her medical information. Supporters said the program would help save lives by ensuring that first responders have a list of the victim’s health records including all prescription drugs that he or she uses. They said that accident victims are often injured or unconscious and thus unable to communicate information verbally to a first responder. OTHER TRANSPORTATION-RELATED BILLS — The Transportation Committee’s hearing also included legislation that would require that all vehicles in a funeral procession to turn on their emergency flashers (H 3082); mandate that rental car companies allow renters the option to return a vehicle anytime on a Saturday or Sunday to any rental company branch office where vehicle returns are accepted during regular business hours, even if the location is closed (H 3065); require the formation of a special commission to study the cost and feasibility of implementing a ferry service that goes from Boston Harbor to Long Island. (H 3311); and require that all vehicles have their headlights on at all times (H 3090). Current law requires headlights to be turned on during the period of onehalf hour after sunset to one half-hour before sunrise, when visibility is reduced to less than 500 feet or when the windshield wipers are being used. WHOOPING COUGH (S 1993) — The House approved and sent to the Senate a proposal that would require hospitals to provide parents of newborns with educational information on whooping cough and the availability of a vaccine to protect against it. Supporters said that a re-education effort for parents of newborns about the disease is needed because whooping cough has reemerged in recent years and the number of cases in the United States has risen from 2,000 per year in the 1970s to 32,000 in 2014. CONDO RECORDS (S 713) — The House approved and sent to the Senate a bill requiring condo associations to reimburse legal fees incurred by any unit owner in his or her efforts to obtain records or documents required by law to be provided by the association to its owners. Under current law, established in 1974, if an association refuses to provide such records, the only recourse available to owners is to hire an attorney. Supporters said it is unfair to have the owner of a unit pay his or her attorney’s fees if a court rules that the owner is entitled to the documents and the association did not provide them in a timely way. They noted that documents are usually requested by an owner who wants to sell or refinance his or her unit. $15 PER HOUR MINIMUM WAGE FOR AIRPORT WORKERS (H 3923) — The Committee on Labor and Workforce Development held a hearing on a measure that would raise the minimum wage from $10 per hour to $15 per hour over three years for baggage handlers, janitors, nonTSA security and screening personnel, airplane cleaners, wheelchair assistants, skycaps, ticket agents and certain other employees at Logan Airport. The wage would be hiked to $12 this year, $13.50 next year and $15 in 2018. REWARD FOR WHISTLE-BLOWERS (H 3943) — The Committee on Labor and Workforce Development’s agenda also included a measure that would reward any person who reports that an individual is participating in the state’s “underground economy.” The whistle-blower would receive 10 percent of any tax revenue recovered. The underground economy is a term commonly understood to include people working “under the table” for cash that is not reported to the IRS and Massachusetts Department of Revenue. It also includes many other illegal activities including concealment or misrepresentation by individuals or businesses of the actual number of their employees to avoid payroll taxes, insurance, licensing, safety or other regulatory requirements. CHILD’S TERMINAL ILLNESS (H 84) — The Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities held a hearing on legislation that would create a pilot program to provide a one-time $10,000 low-interest loan to 30 individuals to assist them in paying the expenses directly resulting from terminal illnesses suffered by their children. During the week of Feb. 8-12, the House met for a total of 28 minutes and the Senate met for a total of one hour and 15 minutes. Bob Katzen welcomes feedback at bob@beaconhillrollcall.com. ‘Millennial Engagement Initiative’ launched BOSTON — Sen. President Stan Rosenberg on Wednesday announced that Sen. Eric P. Lesser will spearhead a new “Millennial Engagement Initiative” for the Massachusetts Senate. The initiative aims to create a dialogue with millennials across the Commonwealth about the issues that matter most to them, including student debt, social media privacy and the new “gig economy.” “Last year the Senate listened to the concerns of thousands of residents during our Commonwealth Conversations tour. This Initiative focuses on the concerns of millennials, who have important perspectives and ideas that deserve to be heard,” Rosenberg said. “Sen. Lesser and I are passionate about making sure we’re out there, talking with young people and bringing their insights back to the Senate.” “It’s important for us to learn more about what state government can do to promote policies that help engage millennials. Together, we can make progress on specific issues that most directly impact my generation,” said Lesser, who at age 30 is the youngest member of the Massachusetts Senate. Rosenberg and Lesser will host the initiative’s first event this Friday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. with a roundtable at TechSpring, a healthcare innovation center located in Springfield’s downtown Innovation District. The roundtable will include a wide array of students and young professionals ranging in age from 16 to 35 who work in healthcare, educa- Orange the machine will ask the voter if they want to cast it as it was completed or if they want it returned so they can fix the error. The purpose of this initiative is to make sure their Senate is responsive and making the concerns of young people a priority,” Lesser said. According to an October 2014 study by the White House Council of Economic Advisers, millennials accounted for over one-third of the U.S. population in 2013 and are the most diverse generation in the postWorld War II era. From Page 1 and then vegetable crops.” Kenya is the sixth-largest flower exporter to the U.S., according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. As east Africa’s agricultural powerhouse, Kenya supplies the European Union with 38 percent of its cut-flower imports, partly due to a tax-exemption trade agreement. Mr. Mules, who farmed in Zimbabwe before being evicted under President Robert Mugabe’s land reforms, said prolonged rains due to the El Nino weather pattern have pressured the company’s bottom line. “The timing of Valentine’s Day is perfect for Kenya because it falls in the dry season,” he said. “Unfortunately, this year, due to el Nino, it has lengthened the so called ‘short rains.’ Instead of stopping in November we were getting rain in January.” Another lament is about Russia. In 2012, flower exports to Russia, the world’s fifthlargest flower importer, began shrinking due to its tanking economy and depreciating ruble. Russian military intervention in Ukraine in 2014 only “worsened the situation,” said Cindy van Rijswick, a fruit, vegetables and floriculture analyst at Dutch bank Rabobank. “A more indirect effect is that, because of the declining cut-flowers exports to Netherlands, Ecuador and Colombia. Cherop, a 29-year-old single mother of two, works at AAA Growers’ Simba farm in Nyahururu, four hours’ drive north of the capital, Nairobi. It’s the one of company’s four 20-hectare (50-acre) farms that make them Kenya’s third-largest grower of vegetables and flowers combined. Cherop was one of 600 workers bused in from surrounding villages to pick or pack thousands of roses to be sent around the world ahead of Feb. 14. Flowers are intricately tied to the global economy. When it collapsed in 2008, the cut-flower trade lost $1.5 billion the following year. In 2013, global exports of cut flowers, cut foliage, living plants and flower bulbs amounted to $20.6 billion, more than twice the amount in 2001. International events, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and plummeting oil prices, have shaped flower fortunes for numerous Kenyan farms. Sales to oil-producing nations, such as Norway and those in the Middle East, have dropped due to their reduced spending power, said Britain-born Andrew Mules, general manager of AAA Growers’ Simba farm. “Up until two years ago, flowers would have been the most profitable part of the farm,” he said. “Now it is our third after soft fruit Schools From Page 1 School District, on Wednesday said he spoke with the principals of each elementary school and Valentine’s Day is observed in each school. He said it varies from school-to-school, with children in the early grades exchanging traditional Valentines and older children focusing on the history of the holiday. Petersham Center School At the Petersham Center School, students may bring in Valentine cards as long as everyone in the classroom gets one. Swift River School New Salem Principal Kelly Sullivan said the school’s treatment of Valentine’s Day accentuates friendship, in order to respect the beliefs of students who may not wish to celebrate. Preschool and kindergarten students are considering how to take care of friends, grades 1 and 2 will participate in a “You’ve Got Mail” celebration, and older students exchange cards — though no parties or food celebrations are held. In all, the school de-emphasizes the holiday, with celebrations observed mostly in younger classrooms. Fisher Hill School Orange Principal Maureen Donelan said the school places only a small emphasis on Valentine’s Day celebrations, which differ by teacher and include the exchanging of Valentines. Snacks, while included as part of the celebrations, are limited in adherence to the school wellness policy. Goodbye spokeswoman Toya Stewart Downey said Wednesday that she wasn’t aware of any developments since the district’s statement last week. She also said Masini was not available for an interview. Other schools across the country have also decided to forego holidays out of concern for student sensitivities, while others have adjusted their celebrations. Thomas R. Scarice, superintendent of Madison Public Schools in Connecticut, told the Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/1KXkxur) that he promotes celebrating holidays in schools while From Page 1 remaining inclusive. “Children are predisposed to have fun, and once we take those opportunities away, learning suffers,” Scarice said. Some districts have turned to generic seasonal celebrations as a way of not abandoning them entirely. “We’re sensitive to being inclusive but do feel that these celebrations are important for building a sense of community in our schools,” said Amy Parnell, spokeswoman for the Wayzata school district in the Minneapolis suburbs. Dana Malaskova, AAA Growers’ commercial manager, said that up until September 2014, the company was sending a quarter of their flowers to Russia, with a steady 5 percent annual growth; now the volume has shrunk to 5 percent of the total. “We no longer rely on Russia for International Women’s day on March 8, the year’s second-biggest flower-giving event,” she said. The drop in Russian demand isn’t translating into a drop of the price of a bouquet this Valentine’s Day, said Neville Ratemo, a director at Kenya’s Horticultural Council. “There is always a big volume at this time of year and people will always be buying roses, so the price goes up,” he said. The Kenya Flower Council said exports rose from 86,480 tons in 2006 to 136,601 tons in 2014. Kenya’s flower business continues to employ half a million Kenyans and earned more than half a billion dollars last year, according to government statistics. In the temperaturecontrolled storeroom of AAA Growers’ warehouse, stacks of cardboard boxes bound for Canada, Australia, the United States and France are the end point to the process that started with workers like Cherop. Cherop, who earns Kenya’s rural minimum wage of $80 a month, said the arduous manual work is a necessity to feed her family. Giggling, she admits, after a bit of prodding, that she’s never received flowers. “We do not really do this here in Kenya,” she said. “No man has ever given me. This mega sporting event takes place Feb. 19-21, 2016 at the Eastern States Exposition, home of the “BIG E,” West Springfield, Massachusetts. The show includes the best of hunting, fishing, boating and adventure recreation that the outdoor world has to offer all bundled together in one great event. it is loaded with great show features including educational hunting seminars, fishing seminars, and fun exhibits like our big casting pool, the retrieving pool, and the giant fresh water fish aquarium! The show is a great family take with demonstrations on many different hunting and fishing skills. There are hunting dog demonstrations, lecturers on varied topics and hundreds of booths featuring products and destinations. The food is also very good and my daughters always enjoyed our trips there each year. Show hours are Friday 12 to 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m., to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You really should check out the web page at osegsportsmens.com to see how many interesting exhibits there will be for you to check out. The Mahar Fish’N Game Club Game Supper will be held this year on Thursday, March 17 at the school cafeteria. The popular event features a variety of fish and game dishes prepared by a veteran kitchen crew that has been cooking up wild game dishes to perfection for a long time. The appetizers alone are worth the price of admission and they are followed by a hearty meal featuring a variety of fish and game dishes. The meal is made possible by the generosity of local sportsmen who donate fish and game they have in their freezers to make the meal possible. One very attractive incentive for the meat donors is the fact that each year the club offers a black powder rifle as a raffle prize that the donors are entered in a drawing to win. High school and middle school members of the Mahar Fish’N Game Club will be receiving tickets next week and there will be some at area outlets later this month. The club, like so many others, has been frustrated in the effort to hold their annual ice fishing derby. Mahar will be the site of the Massachusetts National Archery in the Schools Tournament on Feb. 27. The winning team will be eligible to compete in the NASP National Tournament in May. Last year over 8,000 young people were involved in that competition. Mahar students are busy getting ready for the shoot and the activity has sparked growing interest. NFL fines Talib, Jackson, Webb Denver Broncos fiery cornerback Aqib Talib was fined a total of $26,044 on Friday for taunting and face mask fouls in the Super Bowl. Teammate Malik Jackson was docked $8,681 for unnecessary roughness and Carolina third-string quarterback Joe Webb was fined $8,681 for unnecessary roughness on the final play of the game. Talib was whistled for taunting in the first quarter, keeping a Carolina drive alive. He later grabbed wide receiver Corey Brown’s face mask following a 13-yard catch at the Denver 2, essentially a 1-yard penalty that preceded Carolina’s only touchdown. Afterward, Talib admitted he grabbed Brown’s face mask on purpose to send a message and was expecting to get fined, adding: “But hey, we’re world champs.” GOING RIGHT — Athol’s Evan Saisa (22) dribbles past a Narragansett defender during Friday night’s basketball contest in Baldwinville. Neither NASCAR star will be in a car when Daytona International Speedway opens Friday for preparations for the Feb. 21 season-opening Daytona 500. Gordon, arguably NASCAR’s biggest star, retired at the end of last season and the four-time champion will now be a Fox analyst. He has been highly visible during his newly acquired free time, and was on an all-terrain vehicle trip with Stewart a week ago when the three-time champion crashed. Stewart fractured a vertebra and lay in the sand alone for 90 minutes waiting for his group to find him and get him to a hospital. The accident has sidelined Stewart for the beginning of his final season as a NASCAR driver, denying him a chance to finally win the Daytona 500. He has come heartbreakingly close in his 17 previous tries and spoke last month of his desire to add that win to his resume. Instead, he will watch the race on television as he awaits approval to travel. What Stewart will be missing is the start of what is expected to be a dramatically improved season with plenty of story lines. Kyle Busch will attempt to defend his Sprint Cup title, which he snatched from 2014 champion Kevin Harvick. Defending Daytona 500 winner Joey Logano will be chasing a championship berth he was denied last year because a feud with Matt Kenseth. The drivers will all be using a new rules package that they pushed for during a new era of increased communication between NASCAR and its participants. Denny Hamlin spearheaded a driver council last year at a time when the on-track product was practically unwatchable, with rules that made passing very difficult and catching the leader a daunting task. As NASCAR tried a variety of different packages, the drivers were vocal in the desire for less downforce. Through months of wide-ranging conversations, the drivers secured the rules package they wanted and finally feel that they have a voice in decision-making. The hope is that the racing will be more entertaining this year. The field has been cut from 43 cars to 40, and there are only four open slots each LEGAL NOTICE TOWN OF PETERSHAM HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING To all interested members of the public: The Town of Petersham Historic District Commission will hold a Public Hearing on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., at Petersham Memorial Library, 23 Common Street, to review an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for proposed modifications to exterior architectural features at 37 North Main Street, Petersham. Requested modifications: Removal of an existing exterior door on south side of rear ell and clad door opening in clapboard to match existing. - Petersham Historic District Commission February 13, 2016 week to teams that aren’t guaranteed a spot in the field through NASCAR’s new franchise system. NASCAR is also replacing its “greenwhite-checkered” system used late in races with an “overtime line” that will vary by track. Some other things to know heading into the season opener: -----CHAMP RETURNS: Kyle Busch begins the defense of his Sprint Cup championship at the same track that cost him a chunk of the 2015 season. Busch broke his right leg and left foot when his car slammed into a concrete wall during the Xfinity Series race at Daytona. He missed the Daytona 500 and 10 more races last year, yet a midsummer hot streak propelled him into the Chase and his first Cup title followed. Daytona has since installed more than 8,500 feet of energy-absorbing “soft walls.” LOGANO DEFENDS: Joey Logano won the Daytona 500 last year, a milestone victory to kick off the best season of his career. Logano even reeled off three straight wins during the Chase before he was eliminated, ending his bid for his first Cup title. Logano is trying to become first driver to win consecutive Daytona 500s since Sterling Marlin (1994-95). He was eliminated after Matt Kenseth intentionally wrecked him at Martinsville. DAYTONA RISING: The $400 million Daytona Rising project is complete and will be a featured aspect of the season opener. The massive renovation to NASCAR’s most storied track should drastically improve fan experience and maybe help capture the attention of future generations. The three-year project removed backstretch seating and completely changed the front-stretch grandstands, turning them into the world’s first “motorsports stadium.” The overhaul includes elaborate, corporate-sponsored fan entrances, more than 1,400 high-definition televisions and more diverse food and beverage options. CHARTER SYSTEM: NASCAR dramatically overhauled its business model this week, shifting to a franchiselike system that is intended to provide financial stability for team owners after decades of heavy reliance on sponsors. The change gets away from the independent contractor model that had been used since NASCAR’s inception in 1948. The 36 charters handed out to team owners guarantee revenue and a position in what will now be a 40-car Cup field, down from 43. ROOKIES TO WATCH: This season’s rookie class could go down as one of the best in recent years. Chase Elliott headlines the field, replacing the retired Jeff Gordon in the No. 24 Chevrolet. Chris Buescher, last year’s Xfinity champ, joins Elliott in a class that also includes Ryan Blaney, Brian Scott and Jeffrey Earnhardt. Blaney will have to attempt to race his way into the field each week because his Wood Brothers Racing team was left out of NASCAR’s new charter system. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — It’s been 10 years since the Wood Brothers completed a full NASCAR season, and they stopped trying to make it to the track each week in 2009. NASCAR’s oldest race team didn’t have the funds to keep up with the competition, and a scaled-back approach was what the familyowned organization felt was best for the famed No. 21 Ford. “It would have been an embarrassment to our family, our uncles and our dad, if we just showed up and took a check,” said team coowner Len Wood, the son of founder Glenn Wood. “We didn’t. We tried to perform every time we showed up. It didn’t always work out that way, but that is what we tried to do.” Their approach led to one of the biggest moments in team history: Trevor Bayne’s 2011 upset victory in the Daytona 500. It was the sixth Daytona 500 victory for the team, but first since David Pearson in 1976. They consider Bayne’s win proof that their strategy was best for the proud Virginians, even though it cost them one of the 36 coveted charters that were created this week as part of NASCAR’s new franchising model. Only teams that have attempted every race since 2013 were eligible for one of the charters, which guarantee starting spots in the field each week and provide financial security to owners. The charter system leaves just four open spots in the 40-car field each week, and the Wood Brothers will have to qualify before every race. The timing is bittersweet for the Woods: This dramatic shift in the NASCAR business model came as the team prepared to return to a full schedule with hotshot rookie Ryan Blaney. Blaney ran 16 races for the Woods last year and failed to qualify for three others because rain washed out the session. Their faith in Blaney, who is on loan from Team Penske, and belief that they have made major on-track improvements have the organization convinced that being denied a charter won’t cripple them. “I think with our performance this last year, qualifying in these races shouldn’t be an issue as long as we perform like we know we can,” Len Wood said. “We have talked about in the past that as long as it is a performance related issue like we can’t run fast enough, that is when we have a problem. It is hard to overcome something like that. If you are fast enough every week, that shouldn’t be an issue.” There were technically two charters up for sale because Michael Waltrip Racing shuttered its organization in November. MWR co-owner Rob Kauffman, the architect of the charter system, is free to sell them to the highest bidder and has completed deals with Joe Gibbs Racing and StewartHaas Racing to transfer the slots. Eddie Wood said he was never in position to obtain one of Kauffman’s charters, which went to Gibbs for Carl Edwards and SHR for Kurt Busch. “It was pretty evident that the two that Rob had were going to go to the 19 and 41, so we couldn’t compete with that, so we really never went there,” co-owner Eddie Wood said. “I didn’t think I could outbid Gene Haas and Joe Gibbs.” Fans have taken to social media to blast the Woods’ exclusion from the charter system, but team executives understand the process. The tough part was explaining the situation to Hall of Famer Glenn Wood, who will travel to Daytona on Saturday for the 70th consecutive year. “The hard part for him was that there was this big announcement, confetti flying and we were kind of not a part of it,” Jon Wood, Glenn’s grandson, said. “Maybe we should have explained it beforehand because it would have made more sense and not been such a surprise and catch him off guard. “My grandpa didn’t start this team in 1950 to make a pile of money. What you don’t do is change your business model. You don’t embarrass yourself.” If they could do it all over again and not scale back after the 2008 economic downturn, the team doesn’t think it would change a thing — even though that decision ultimately cost them a chance at a charter. “If you told me I could go back six years and if we wanted to run all the races and you would have a charter, would you swap? No, I probably wouldn’t,” Eddie Wood said. “We wanted to race in a model that fit us at the time ... which was race part-time but when we show up we are competitive and spending enough money to get all the right stuff, the right people and right driver. “That actually turned into a Daytona 500 win. You can’t take that away. That was one of the biggest wins in our career.” Mets Jenry Mejia 1st to draw lifetime drug ban NEW YORK (AP) — Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia became the first player to receive a lifetime ban under Major League Baseball’s drug agreement after testing positive for a performanceenhancing substance for the third time. The commissioner’s office said Friday that Mejia tested positive for the anabolic steroid Boldenone, which athletes have used to increase muscle mass and once was popular for use in horse racing. The 26-year-old righthander was the Mets’ closer in 2014, then was suspended for 80 games last April 11 following a positive test for Stanozolol, a drug popular among bodybuilders. At the time, he said, “I can honestly say I have no idea how a banned substance ended up in my system.” Mejia returned July 12, appeared in seven games for New York, then was banned for 162 games on July 28 after a positive test for Stanozolol and Boldenone. “I think not surprisingly there’s a tremendous amount of disappointment, I think to some extent, anger, to some extent, amazement that this could happen so soon after a previous suspension was completed,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said then. “This is the consequence of making bad choices.” The Mets said Friday they “were deeply disappointed.” The Major League Baseball Players Association declined comment, and a spokesman for Mejia’s agents said the pitcher had no comment. Under pressure from Congress to toughen their drug program, major league players and teams agreed in November 2005 that a third positive test for PEDs would result in a lifetime ban. His 162-game suspension had matched the longest under the big league program, a year-long ban served by the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez in 2014 that originally was 211 games before an arbitrator reduced it. Mejia may apply one year from now to baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred for reinstatement, and Manfred at his discretion has the power to let Mejia back in baseball — but no earlier than for the 2018 season. If an application is made and denied, Mejia could ask baseball’s arbitrator to end the ban, claiming the penalty is without “just cause.” The arbitrator cannot reduce the ban to less than two years. Outfielder Josh Hamilton, then in the minor leagues, was suspended several times for drugs of abuse from 2003-05 but was allowed to return each time. During a time when there was not a drug agreement, Steve Howe was suspended for life by Commissioner Fay Vincent in 1992 after the pitcher’s seventh drug- or alcoholrelated incident. Arbitrator George Nicolau said doctors concluded Howe suffered from Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and cut the suspension to time served, which was 119 days. Brian Vickers set for Daytona return DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Brian Vickers might have been more easily found on TV this week pitching a blood-thinning drug instead of practicing for the Daytona 500. His ubiquitous commercial — which also features Miami Heat star Chris Bosh and golfer Arnold Palmer — was about the only way Vickers stayed in the spotlight for most of the last year. Bosh is back from his blood clot scare and returned to All-Star form. Vickers is ready for a comeback from his own health woes, too. His once promising career derailed by recurring blood clots, Vickers will drive the No. 14 Chevrolet in the Daytona 500 for Stewart-Haas Racing. Tony Stewart is sidelined indefinitely with a fractured vertebra. Vickers has no promises of another start. Yet after missing 34 races last season, he will gladly take a seat in NASCAR’s biggest race. “I wasn’t sure if I would ever be in the Daytona 500 again,” Vickers said Friday at Daytona International Speedway. “Here I am.” Vickers was medically cleared to race this week. He can’t compete while being treated for the clots because the blood thinners increase his risk of serious internal bleeding if he is hurt in a crash. He worked with doctors for a year to find the right plan that allows him to race safely and keep him protected from clots. “I wasn’t sure if I’d ever race again,” he said. The 32-year-old Vickers has three wins in 318 career Sprint Cup starts, but only raced a full schedule twice since 2009. Vickers is paired with rookie crew chief Michael Bugarewicz for Speedweeks. “We’ll be well prepared by the time we get to the 500,” Bugarewicz said. Vickers was picked in part because of his success at restrictor-plate tracks. His first career Cup victory came in 2006 at Talladega Superspeedway. He finished second in 2014 in the July race at Daytona and has made nine career starts in the Daytona 500. Stewart, 0 for 17 in the Daytona 500, was hurt riding an all-terrain vehicle in the desert in California last week. Stewart hasn’t won a race since 2013 and had only three top-10 finishes last season. Stewart still had a Daytona presence in absentia — he used the livestreaming app Periscope to answer fan questions as he walked on a treadmill. “It’s unfortunate that this is the car I’m in because it means Tony’s not here,” Vickers said. “I can understand what he’s going through, unfortunately.” Vickers has been sidelined four times for health issues since 2010. He missed the final five races of the 2013 season because he was placed on blood thinners to treat a blood clot in his right calf. He also missed 25 races during the 2010 season when clots were discovered in his legs and lungs. No players have been banned for life under the minor league drug program. A Dominican signed by the Mets in 2007, Mejia reached the major leagues in 2010 and became their closer in 2014, when he had 28 saves in 31 chances. He is 9-14 with a 3.68 ERA in 18 starts and 95 relief appearances. Mejia began last year as the Mets’ closer, but couldn’t get loose while warming up on opening day at Washington and went on the disabled list with elbow inflammation. Because of the suspensions, Mejia received just $496,311 of his $2,595,000 salary last year. He will receive none of his $2.47 million salary this year. In Mejia’s absence, Jeurys Familia became New York’s closer, and the Mets went on to reach the World Series for the first time since 2000. New York lost the World Series to Kansas City in five games. Authorities say the men were all wearing court-ordered GPS devices for unrelated cases, which placed them inside the Dorchester store and allowed investigators to track them to an apartment a block away. Police say the suspects entered the store at 6 p.m. Wednesday. All three wore masks and one had a gun. They made off with cash and cigarettes. All three pleaded not guilty at their arraignment Thursday. Two had their bail revoked in prior cases. A third was held on $50,000 bail. The prosecutor said “all their GPSs pinged to the store at the time of the robbery.” Police also found evidence in the apartment that tied them to the robbery. Animal rights protest off after ‘greased pig’ dust-up NEWPORT, N.H. (AP) — An international animal advocacy group launched a protest against a New Hampshire winter carnival event billed as a “Greased Pig on Ice,” but withdrew it after learning there’s no pig in the act — just a man on skates in a pig costume with dollar bills tied to his tail. Steve Smith, an organizer of the 100th Newport Winter Carnival, said People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, launched its alert last week despite his reassurances that no pigs would be harmed during the Saturday event. Smith said he received about 100 emails from concerned animal lovers. PETA spokeswoman Daphna Nachminovitch said Smith did not clarify what the event would entail. She said the updated information is excellent news for the pigs. Smith said Thursday that he assured a PETA investigator in a Feb. 5 email that no animals would be harmed during the event. The group never challenged or questioned him about it before writing a detailed email alert, he said. It talked about “subjecting these highly sensitive animals to such a chaotic and violent ordeal rife with screaming participants.” It also mentioned capturing the pigs and stuffing them into barrels. “How can they know what we’re doing if they never even bothered to ask what we’re doing?” Smith said. “If they just asked, ‘What are your plans?’ I would have told them.” Help Wanted Career Center Assessment Counselor Franklin Hampshire Career Center GVNA HEALTHCARE, INC. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2016 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2016 Valentine Moon in Taurus. Some say romantic love is a relatively new phenomenon in the scope of human history; others point to romantic sentiments written on Sumerian clay tablets dating thousands of years B.C. However old or new your own love may be, and whatever form it takes, the Taurus moon promises an expression that delights the senses. No-Drama Moon. At the heart of every good story there’s drama, which of course relies on conflict: no conflict, no drama. As much as we need the good stories, today many would trade that for a peaceful one in which everyone gets along and lives happily ever after. It could happen under this communicative Gemini moon angling Mercury in Aquarius so sweetly. ARIES (March 21-April 19). V alentine’s Day is a time when men and women express their love and affection for one another, which can be accomplished in a variety of ways. For many celebrants, food and beverages are part of the festivities. According to the USDA and Gallup, in the United States Valentine’s Day is the bubbliest occasion after New Year’s Eve and Thanksgiving. That’s because around $9 million is spent on sparkling wine products. What pairs well with that bubbly? Why chocolate, of course. Fifty-eight million pounds of chocolate candy is purchased during the week of Valentine’s Day, when the National Confectioners Association says 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold. Cupid’s connection to love and the Valentine’s Day holiday H earts tend to be aflutter on Valentine’s Day, and Cupid just might be the scoundrel behind those starry-eyed feelings. Just who is this arrow-wielding Cupid and how did he become associated with Valentine’s Day? God of love and desire Ancient Greeks and Romans were prolific storytellers and used mythology to explain many of the mysteries of life. Certain feelings and happenings on Earth were attributed to the moods and actions of Gods who presided over the people. In Roman mythology, Cupid was the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. His Greek counterpart was Eros, while in Latin Cupid was known as Amor. According to myth, Cupid was the son of the winged messenger Mercury and Venus, the goddess of love. Cupid’s machinations were often guided by his mother’s hand, and matchmaking remained his most well-known trait. As time went on and Christian influences pushed out ancient Greek and Roman beliefs, Cupid was seen as an angel of heavenly and earthly love. Cupid could easily be mistaken for many other angelic cherubim portrayed in artwork during the Renaissance period. Eventually Cupid became a popular icon of Valentine’s Day. Cupid’s appearance Cupid has appeared in different ways in illustrations and other artwork throughout history. Sometimes he is depicted as a winged, chubby infant carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. Classical Greek art depicts Cupid as a slender, winged youth. The reason Cupid has wings is because lovers are known to be flighty and change their moods and minds with some frequency. He is boyish because love is irrational, and he carries arrows and a torch because love can both wound but also inflame the heart. Cupid has traditionally been portrayed as benevolent, if not mischievous. After all, his goal is to bring two lovers together. His arsenal was equipped with two different kinds of arrows. People pierced by gold-tipped arrows would succumb to uncontrollable desire. Those afflicted by an arrow with a blunt tip of lead desired only to flee. Cupid and Psyche Cupid may have been responsible for bringing many people together with his special arrows, but he also was granted the opportunity to experience love himself. According to the myth of “Cupid and Psyche,” Psyche was a beautiful woman whose appearance rivaled even that of Venus. People grew enchanted by her beauty and started to neglect the worship of Venus. Jealous of this attention, Venus asked Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. But when Cupid saw how beautiful Psyche was, he accidentally dropped the arrow meant for her and pricked himself instead. He immediately became enamored with her. Psyche, who had not been able to marry like her other sisters, feared she had been cursed by the gods in some way. She was sent away to avoid the premonition of marrying a monster, but Cupid, hidden from sight, ended up visiting Psyche and gaining her trust and affection. The pair then married, although Psyche had never seen her husband in the light of day because he forbade her to look upon him. After all, he was a god and she was a mortal. One night Psyche disobeyed Cupid’s edict and snuck a peek by candlelight. She was amazed by his beauty and became startled, wounding herself on one of his arrows. Psyche ended up dropping hot wax on Cupid, which woke him up and he ran off. Psyche wandered endlessly trying to find her lost husband and had to go through various trials established by a still-jealous Venus. In one of her trials, she ended up getting put to sleep, but Cupid revived her and pleaded with Jupiter to make Psyche immortal and let her be his true wife. Jupiter ultimately granted that wish. Cupid will forever be connected to the concepts of love and affection, which is why he has become an unofficial symbol of Valentine’s Day. Happy Valentine’s Day ! ! ! ! Shelly, TY for another! ! Asquino on Wednesday announced his intention to retire in January 2017. Dr. Asquino has served as president of MWCC since August 1987 and is currently the longest-serving public higher education president in Massachusetts. Under his leadership, MWCC has grown exponentially in size, stature and academic services. Enrollment has grown to over 12,000 credit and noncredit students, satellite campuses have been established in Leominster, Fitchburg, and Devens, and the number of academic programs has expanded to over 75 associate degree and certificate options. During his tenure at MWCC, Dr. Asquino has established the college as a state and national leader in the areas of workforce development and economic development; dual enrollment and K-12 partnerships; civic engagement and service learning; veteran services; and renewable energy and sustainability. “It has been an honor and a privilege,” Dr. Asquino said in an announcement to the college and greater community. “I can say without reservation that it has been a joy to come to work each and every day. For that, I thank the hard-working students, faculty, staff and alumni of Mount Wachusett Community College and our many community partners for their inspiration and support.” “President Asquino has transformed Mount Wachusett Community College during his time at the helm of this great institution,” said MWCC Board of Trustees Chair Tina Sbrega. “What was a one-campus college with fewer than 1,500 students when he arrived 30 years ago, is today a thriving four-campus college deeply connected to the communities we serve.” Sbrega praised Dr. Asquino for his deep commitment to community partners. “President Asquino really listens to the needs of business leaders, non-profits, K-12 educators and all of the North Central Massachusetts regional partners.” Sbrega expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Asquino’s leadership on behalf of the Board of Trustees. “We have been so very fortunate to have such an innovative leader as President Asquino. “President Asquino not only cared deeply about his students and the college, but he worked closely with countless community partners to ensure that the college and its offerings were relevant. This entire community is better for his leadership and he will leave a pair of very big shoes to fill.” Dr. Asquino began his career in public higher education in 1971 as assistant to the president of the Massachusetts Board of Regional Com- munity Colleges. He went on to serve as assistant dean of administration at Bristol Community College, and dean of administration and development at Cape Cod Community College before being appointed MWCC’s second president. He is a charter member of the Massachusetts College Success Campaign, and The Democracy Commitment, as well as the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Dr. Asquino currently chairs the Massachusetts Community College Council’s Labor Relations Committee. In addition, he is a past member of the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Communications and Marketing, Commission on Diversity, and Commission on Workforce Development. He has twice chaired the Massachusetts Committee of Community College Presidents and is a past chair of the College Board’s National Community College Advisory Panel. He is a member and past two-term chair of the New England College Coun- cil, and a member of the Massachusetts Campus Compact Executive Board of Directors. Locally, Dr. Asquino serves as an officer and past chair of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts Board of Directors, officer and past chair of the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster and past chair of Greater Gardner and North Central Massachusetts Chambers of Commerce. He is a member and past chair of the Board of Trustees for Heywood Hospital, and the GFA Supervisory Board. He is the recipient of many community and national awards, including the Community Leader Award from the UMass MemorialHealthAlliance Hospital Foundation; the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Nashua Valley Council Boy Scouts of America; the Dr. Robert H. Goldman Community Service Award; the Greater Gardner Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and Community Service awards; the Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Award; the Governor’s Pride in Performance Award; Enterprise Bank’s Celebration of Excellence Community Service Award; and the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations Pacesetter Award. Dr. Asquino holds a Ph.D. and M.P.A. in Public Administration and Political Science and a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Southeastern Massachusetts University, now UMass Dartmouth. He has taught public administration and business administration courses at all college levels, including at the associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral levels. A nationwide search for a new leader for MWCC will be conducted under the leadership and authority of the MWCC Board of Trustees and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. During that time, Dr. Asquino will continue to lead the institution to ensure a seamless transition. “I can promise you that I will continue to give 100 percent every day and partner with all of you so that there is no loss in the momentum that has been our hallmark,” he said. MARLBOROUGH — February is here and while known for its celebration of past presidents, consumers often look forward to substantial sales during Presidents’ Day on big ticket items such as new cars. Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont, offers the following tips for those who are ready to take on Presidents’ Day deals. “Savvy shoppers should plan ahead and stay mindful of their budget,” says Paula Fleming, spokesperson for the local BBB. “By developing a plan in advance and being aware of sales and discounts, consumers are more likely to have a successful and stress-free experience.” In 2015, BBB received 884 complaints on new and used car dealers regarding guarantee or warranty issues, problems with the product or service, and advertising or sales issues. However, last year, customer reviews surpassed complaints as BBB published 1,071 on new and used car dealers. BBB also reported an overwhelming 141,986 inquiries into used car dealers alone, making it the most inquired about industry of 2015. Fleming explains, “These numbers demonstrate that consumers are doing their research, checking out businesses before making a purchase and submitting a review on their experience for future customers to read.” Before you hit cruise control on your new or used car purchase, BBB offers the following tips for car shoppers: Search for sales ahead of time. Check out dealers’ websites and online advertisements, as there are specific discounts being offered this Presidents’ Day. Don’t be afraid to comparison shop and check prices on the same vehicles at different locations. If an offer sounds too good to be true, think twice. Do your homework. If you’re shopping around for a new car, Presidents’ Day is an ideal holiday for it. But before you sign on the dotted line, be sure to do your homework to find out exactly what you’re looking for, how much you can afford, and the type of customer incentives being offered. BBB offers consumers the Accredited Business Directory to find reputable dealerships in your area. Research the manufacturer as well as the dealer. Over 51 million cars were recalled in 2015. Especially if you’re in the market for a used vehicle, it’s important to be familiar with the history of your desired car’s make and model. In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers resources for safety problems. Their tool using a car’s VIN number allows you to look up a vehicle’s safety recalls over the past 15 years including recalls that are incomplete. Stand your ground. If a dealer offered something in an advertisement but that vehicle is no longer available, make sure what they do offer in its place is comparable. Plus, don’t hesitate to negotiate. Don’t lose your motivation to drive away with a deal just because it’s a busy time to car shop. If you’ve done your research, you’ll be ready to “talk shop.” Stay calm and be confident. The dealer still wants to move inventory and they need you to make the sale. Share your experience. If you’ve had a great experience with a business, we want to hear about it!
