Creating Employment
Opportunities For People
With Significant Disabilities
JVS Recognized for Being a
Quality Work Environment
JVS reached the Bronze Level of Achievement in the Quality
Work Environment (QWE) initiative through NISH (formerly the National Industry for the Severely Handicapped). As
part of the initiative, JVS completed a self-assessment, submitted a QWE strategic action plan and completed the action plan
items. Some of the key goals achieved were to develop a
newsletter for workers with disabilities who participate in the
federal AbilityOne initiative and include two such workers on
the JVS Staff Advisory Committee.
AbilityOne is a federal law that promotes employment opportunities for people with significant disabilities. JVS annually
serves approximately 90 such participants who work at the
Detroit Arsenal (TACOM), the IRS and Army Corps of
Engineers mailrooms and at the Federal Aviation
Administration tower at Detroit Metro Airport, among other
locations.
Funding Ensures No Smile
is Left Behind
JVS recently received nearly $20,000 in funding to support the
JVS Tri-County Dental Health Program, which provides dental referrals to uninsured individuals in need of emergency
dental care. The program received operational funds from the
Michigan Department of Community Health to support the
entire program while The William G. and Myrtle E. Hess
Charitable Trust gave funds to enhance the services in Oakland
County.
A new pilot dental program in Macomb County was funded by
the Metro Health Foundation to increase both the number of
dentists donating their services and the amount of free services
provided and to produce a model for increasing donated dental
services that can be replicated in other counties in Michigan.

Women’s Initiatives
Receive Funding
With special funding from the Jewish Women’s Foundation,
JVS is expanding the Jewish Occupational Intern Program by
creating new opportunities for young female college students.
The funding will provide new internships that focus on the
issues and needs of women and/or girls and outreach to expand
the number of these types of internships in the future. The
internship program also serves to strengthen interns’ connections to the Metro Detroit Jewish community and educate
them about the Detroit Jewish nonprofit agencies to increase
awareness of the lay, volunteer and professional Jewish communal service options.
The Jewish Women’s Foundation also partially funds the JVS
Springboard to Success program, which provides women who
have been out of the workforce with job readiness and computer training.

As part of their Bridging the Gap strategy, the United Way
approved a grant to help JVS move individuals and families
toward self-sufficiency. As a Bridging the Gap partner, JVS will
assist individuals who are homeless to become self sufficient
through job readiness training and internships at local nonprofits to fill gaps in their employment history and learn job
skills and work behaviors. The program also provides financial
assistance in the form of bus passes, lunch stipends and
financial literacy courses.
Correction:
The last JVS Matters contained an announcement that may have
implied that JVS was a United Way for Southeastern Michigan
Center for Working Families. Rather, JVS is providing supplemental services in the form of financial literacy and workforce readiness
training to clients of Orchards Children’s Services and
Neighborhood Services Organization is similar to those provided at
the Center for Working Families.
Inheriting Loving Kindness:
Multigenerational Involvement at the JVS Brown Center
By Jessica Grossman, JVS JOIN Intern
Barbara Adler, Marni Adler-Roger and Rochael Rubin all share
a passion for individuals living with memory loss. At the JVS
Dorothy and Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Care
Center (Brown Center), the three are committed to the care
and enrichment of the participants. Yet they are different than
the other generous staff and volunteers at the Brown Center.
Together, the three create a family chain, mother to daughter to
granddaughter. Observing the three Adler women one might
say that their love for the Brown Center is genetic.
Barbara Adler began working as
the office technician at the
Brown Center in 2000. She
sought the position because of
the Brown Center’s mission of
caring for individuals with
memory impairment.
Adler-Rogers’ daughter, Rochael (Rochie) Rubin, was just a
baby when her mom began bringing her to the Brown Center.
“Some of the participants have seen Rochie grow up throughout the years,” explains Adler of her granddaughter. “Bringing
young energy and joy, Rochie’s involvement has added even
more light to the active facility.”
Rubin looks back on her experience with deep joy. “I became
an official volunteer this year, but I’ve been coming here for as
long as I can remember,” says
Rubin, now 13. “It feels good
to help. Even if I don’t know
people, they smile when they
see me.”
Marni and Rochie enjoy volunteering together, frequently
leading the Welcome Shabbat
“They are like a forgotten peoProgram on Fridays. “Multiple,” explains Adler, “Yet they
generational volunteering can
have so much to offer, and so
help engage a larger portion of
much knowledge.” Adler is a

itive because many see their own grandchildren infrequently.”
From the moment one enters the Brown Center, that love is
evident. With her warm, kind smile, Adler greets participants at
the front desk along with her darling dog, Angel, who has her
own Facebook page. A volunteer at the Brown Center, Angel
plays an important role, offering a wordless connection that
only animals can.
Nearly seven years ago, Adler’s daughter, Marni Adler-Rogers,
began volunteering at the Brown Center. “I was working, but
I had a flexible schedule on Fridays, so I would come in and
do whatever I could,” will Adler-Rogers says. “It’s my way of
giving back. It’s heartwarming to know that the Brown Center
offers these individuals an opportunity to enjoy life and live it
to the fullest.”
Perhaps that is what makes Barbara, Marni and Rochie’s involvement so touching. Each has something different yet equally
significant to offer the participants. The Adler family has offered
up their tender kindness, but their heartfelt attention, proving
these traits can be inherited among the generations.
Editor’s Note: The Brown Center is located both at JVS
in Southfield and at Jewish Senior Life in West Bloomfield. To

Many Firsts for 15th Annual Luncheon
The 15th annual Strictly Business luncheon, held on June 7 at
The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dearborn, had a number of firsts.
Honorary Chair Ed Levy Jr., president and CEO of the Edw. C.
Levy Co., (a leading provider of environmental solutions to
local, national and international industry), delivered heartfelt
remarks about the impact his family’s values had on running
andgrowing a successful business, and for the first time in the
luncheon’s history, the 700+ business and community leaders in
attendance honored an honorary chair with a standing ovation.
Rush Trucking Corp. received the JVS Business Leadership
Award for outstanding human resource practices. This is the
first time a company has been singled out for promoting diversity in the workplace.
Founder Andra Rush, a Native American, explained, “I
witnessed the effects of unemployment when I visited relatives
on the reservation and vowed to bring jobs to Native Americans
and others who are often overlooked and underemployed.”
Jason Raznick, founder of Benzinga, (an online financial media
outlet that provides up-to-the-minute news for investors), was
presented with the first annual JVS Rising Entrepreneur Award.
Rush began the company in 1984 with three trucks. Today,
Michigan-based Rush Trucking operates in 48 states, Mexico
and Canada with a fleet of more than 800 tractors and 1,350
trailers, 350 employees and 900 associates.
“The award was created to honor an individual who has
demonstrated excellence and extraordinary success in such areas
as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment
to business and the community,” said Strictly Business CoChair Mindi Fynke.
Three JVS clients who overcame obstacles to employment,
including an Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate
who was laid off, a veteran who had trouble adjusting to civilian life and a woman with a disability, received the JVS
Employee of the Year Award (see page 8 for related story).
Founded by Raznick in 2010, Benzinga now has offices in
Delaware, Metro Detroit and Chicago and serves more than
three million readers in more than 125 countries each month.
“These individuals represent the many who come to JVS in their
time of need,” said Co-Chair Michael Tobin. “It’s stories like
theirs that inspired and motivated us to raise more than
$276,000 so that JVS can continue to help others achieve the
same success.”
Andra Rush, founder of Rush Trucking Corp., accepts the 2012 Business Leadership Award
from Robert Broner of Broner Inc., which received the 2011 award from JVS.

Music and Art Therapy
Fund Honors One,
Assists Many
By Jessica Grossman, JVS JOIN Intern
Bruce and Edwina Simpson
Music and art are two creative outlets that offer endless enjoyment throughout the world, but there is more to creativity than
mere pleasure, as music and art can be powerful therapeutic
tools to open the minds and imaginations of individuals
struggling with memory disorders.
Quite often, people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of
memory loss will have trouble remembering names of their family members but have no trouble recalling the lyrics to favorite
songs from the past. Likewise, those who have trouble verbally
sharing their feelings can express themselves through art.
“Diseases that trigger memory loss affect the sections of the
brain that control both memory and complex planning,”
explains Peter Ostrow, program director at the JVS Dorothy &
Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Care Program
(Brown Center). “Thankfully, they leave the portions of the
brain involved in emotion and creativity intact. A person may
continue to be able to draw, paint, play, sing and appreciate
music even if other functions have gone.”
That’s why, more and more, therapists are using music and art
to help individuals regain a sense of control over memory
disorders come to terms with their emotions and even revive
memory. Listening to music or painting a picture stimulates the
mind and increases brain activity, which has been shown in
neurological studies to help reduce further cognitive loss in
persons with Alzheimer’s.
One former Brown Center client who loved music and art was
Bruce Simpson. He was an engineer by profession but also was
a talented violinist. Full of life and creativity, he enjoyed volunteering with the Dearborn Symphony, painting watercolors as a
hobby, playing golf, traveling and participating in a wide
variety of activities.
When Bruce was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Edwina, his wife,
did everything she could to keep Bruce active, but she knew
something more was needed.
“You just can’t give certain things to your loved ones without
assistance,” she says. “I couldn’t provide the stimulation Bruce
needed on my own.”
When Edwina learned about the Brown Center, she was very
impressed by the professionalism of the staff and the bright,
social environment. With photography and colorful artwork
lining the halls, Edwina knew Bruce would thrive at the center.
So, in March of 2009, Bruce began to attend the Brown Center
facilities at JVS. Soon after he enrolled, Bruce was playing the
violin for his fellow participants, creating his own artwork and
enjoying the active atmosphere.
“The Brown Center not only enhanced Bruce’s life, but mine as
well,” says Edwina. “It made me a better caregiver because it
helped me bring balance back into my life while also making
sure Bruce got the creative and mental stimulation he needed.”
After Bruce’s passing, Edwina, along with Bruce’s sons, Dick
and Tom, wanted to do something positive to commemorate
his time at the Brown Center. They established the Bruce H.
Simpson Art and Music Fund in 2011 as an endowment fund
so that it will continue to fund the music and arts at the Brown
Center, touching others like Bruce and making a difference in
participants’ lives for years to come.
Thanks to funds like the Bruce H. Simpson Art and Music
Fund, the Brown Center will be able to maintain and improve
upon the art and music therapy program.
“It’s a new field in many ways,” explains Ostrow. “We’re always
looking to incorporate new techniques and approaches.”
Both Ostrow and the Simpsons agree that the arts will always
have a meaningful role at the Brown Center.
“No matter who you are or where you’ve been, I believe that
everyone can relate, enjoy and partake in musical and artistic
activities,” says Edwina. “Creativity will always resonate with
people of all ages and from all walks of life.”
Editor’s Note: Individuals can establish an endowment fund at
JVS to support any program or service they wish to benefit seniors,
youth, people with disabilities and others. For more information,

Accepting Employee of the Year Awards are (from left) Roberta Zald, Charles Scott and Frances Gendler
Three Honored for Determined Spirit
Three job seekers who successfully found jobs with support
from JVS were honored with the JVS Employee of the Year
Award at the agency’s 15th annual Strictly Business luncheon in
June. Their personal stories were featured at the luncheon in a
video highlighting their struggles and successes. Visit
www.youtube.com/JVSDetroit to view their individual stories.
Roberta Zald
With degrees from the University of Michigan and
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Roberta Zald never
imagined she would be unemployed. She had a great job in a
business development role and was excited to break into new
markets. But when the automotive industry started to revive,
new markets were no longer a priority, and Zald was laid off.
“My reaction was one of devastation,” explains Zald. “I questioned my own value. If I could be removed so easily, then
what was I really contributing all along?”
Zald, who had 30 years of work experience, thought she would
quickly find a job in no more than two to three months. It
took eight. During that time, she heard about JVS’s employment services and Success Teams and joined one of the groups.
The team is described as “Weight Watchers for job seekers” by
Karen Gutman, JVS employment specialist and coordinator of
community outreach. The team provides accountability, support, education and structure. For Zald, it gave her the
confidence and motivation to stick with the job search until she
found employment. Now, she’s the director of operations at
IPR Robotics in Troy and is grateful that JVS was there to help.
“JVS really gave me a safe place to push myself and to make me
believe in myself again,” she says.
Frances Gendler
Frances Gendler enjoys listening to music, reading and rug
hooking. With job retention services from JVS, she’s also able
to enjoy work as a courtesy clerk at Hollywood Market in
Royal Oak.
The job retention program helps people with disabilities remain
successful by checking in on their performance and addressing
any challenges or concerns that may arise. The program has
helped Gendler successfully retain her job for 13 years.
For Gendler’s mother, Shirley Goldstein, the program has also
provided peace of mind. “JVS has given me security, as I know
Frances has someplace to go every day,” she explains. “Having
something to get up for and look forward to has given her life.”
It has also given her self confidence. “JVS believes in me and I
can believe in myself,” says Gendler.
Charles Scott
Charles Scott is a Desert Storm veteran who had a difficult time
adjusting after he returned home. “I was a different person,” he
explains. “I had a lot of issues and found it difficult to hold a job.”
Like many vets, he struggled to adjust to civilian life. Lost, Scott
took to the streets where he put two men in the hospital after they
tried to rob him. His behavior cost him eight years in prison.
“Being a dad in prison was one of the most difficult things that
I’ve ever been through,” says Scott. “I had to change who I was
so that I could be a better father when I got home.”
Helping him through the transition was the JVS Prisoner Reentry Program, which taught Scott job readiness, resume writing and interview skills so he would be successful after release
from prison.
Now Scott is the owner of Heaven Scent Catering. He thanks
his wife, family and JVS for encouraging him to follow his
dream and says, “It’s nice to have people believe in you when
you don’t believe in yourself.”
Editor’s Note: Scott has catered several events as a result of the recognition he received at Strictly Business, including catering for JVS!
