In 2011, the Public Arts Board (PAB) began searching for ideas to enhance our Norman Parks. The PAB liked the concept of the Cow Parade in Chicago and other similar projects, but wanted to create something unique, produced locally and that incorporated its mission, to create exciting, appealing, and harmonious public spaces through the integration of art into public places. The PAB accepted a proposal to use the Firehouse Art Center’s original duck, “Samo Ducky,” designed and donated by Douglas Shaw Elder. The PAB hired 3-D Extreme in Norman to cast fiberglass reproductions of the original duck and published a “Request for Proposals” to Norman artists to submit their visions of the duck sculptures to paint and enhance. In addition to Samo Ducky, residing next to the Firehouse in Lions Park, there are 18 ducky installations currently located in Norman: ART EDUCATION INITIATIVE The Art Education in Schools Initiative is the Firehouse Art Center’s effort to bring art education opportunities and experiences to students K-5 in the Norman Public School system. Along with Firehouse support, these programs could not exist without grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied Arts, and with generous individual donations. If you would like to support the Art Education in Schools Initiative, please contact Douglas Shaw Elder by email at info@normanfirehouse.com. Since September 2014, the Firehouse Art Center has provided 444 HOURS of art education to 1,711 CHILDREN, including: • • • • A R T E D U C AT I O N I N I T I AT I V E • 168 Kennedy Elementary students who have received 35 hours of instruction through an after school partnership with the Center for Children and Families, Inc. (CCFI) 474 Jackson Elementary students who have received 319 hours of bi-weekly art instruction 327 Lincoln Elementary students who received 30 hours of visual art education during their school’s Figurative Language Mural project 474 Jackson Elementary students who received 30 hours of visual art education during their school’s Figurative Language Mural project 268 Wilson Elementary students who received 30 hours of visual art education during their school’s Figurative Language Mural project All in-school art education projects and programs introduce visual art education that connects the students’ current curriculum with the Oklahoma Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. Projects are designed to allow children to see their subject from a different viewpoint, to expand the ways in which they absorb information, and to express their understanding of their education in a vibrant way. Research has shown that children who can express themselves artistically will dramatically improve their skills of observation and retention along with their overall performance. FALL 2015 PROJECTS: Bringing Figurative Language Murals to Additional Schools In 2014, The Firehouse Art Center worked with all 1,235 students at Kennedy Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Jackson Elementary to create large murals illustrating examples of figurative language including: simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and clichés. In spring of 2015, the Firehouse took the project to Wilson Elementary; additional public elementary schools in the Norman community will be added when school resumes in the fall. The Figurative Language Murals project is designed to use visual arts education as an alternative form of learning to help students attain higher retention and understanding of a challenging language curriculum, while completing a unified goal to achieve school beautification. MIDSUMMER NIGHTS 2015 August 21 & August 22 | 6 - 11 PM both nights Lions Park, at the corner of Flood and Symmes About Midsummer Nights The 38th Annual Midsummer Nights art festival will take place on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22, 2015, from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. The event will be held in Lions Park, at Flood Avenue and Symmes, adjacent to the Firehouse Art Center. Demonstrations Throughout Midsummer Nights, Firehouse instructors will be found in the Central Tent demonstrating skills that are taught in classes offered during the year at the FAC. Jewelry teacher, Elyse Bogart, will be crafting silver jewelry pieces both nights alongside a few of her longtime students. Ceramics faculty members Joe Cox and Florene Welcher will demonstrate wheel throwing techniques. Artist Craig Swan will be working on a sculpture while Adrienne Day demonstrates printmaking techniques. MIDSUMMER NIGHTS Midsummer Nights is one of the largest art festivals in Norman, taking place in the evening, with a one of a kind atmosphere. The event is the Firehouse’s opportunity to highlight regional artists, share its mission to provide quality art experiences, and demonstrate its passion for the visual arts to the community. This juried arts festival features 25 unique, high-quality artist booths offering pottery, jewelry, glass, sculpture, woodworking and more. Midsummer Nights is a great opportunity to speak with artists and purchase original works of art priced for every budget, from student to collector. MIDSUMMER NIGHTS 2015 Art Activities This year’s Midsummer Nights art festival features a variety of exciting art opportunities for children, including the “Children’s Art Wall,” the innovative “Foil Sculpting” project, frottage drawings, and figure drawing. The community’s beloved children’s art activity, the “Children’s Art Wall,” will be provided for young painters, with local artists and instructors available to assist the children with their creative compositions. Participants of foil sculpting will be encouraged to construct a multitude of creations, each from a single sheet of foil, which can be added to the FAC’s environmental platform showcasing a community of imaginative foil sculptures. Frottage drawings can be created by rubbing a drawing tool over a textured surface; the drawings can be left as is or used as the basis for further art making. Both children and adults are invited to participate in the figure drawing activity, which will provide the opportunity to create graphite portraits of a professional model with encouragement from FAC faculty who will also be sketching and assisting with the activity. MIDSUMMER NIGHTS Artist Booths At its core, Midsummer Nights is an opportunity for the Firehouse, as an arts institution, to support and celebrate regional visual artists.
