Avignon, city of the Popes A Villeneuve lez Avignon, city of the Cardinals I vignon has over five thousand years of history. Due to its strategic geographical location, Avignon has long been a crossroads of cultures and exchange. Avignon was once the capital of the Cavare tribe, then a Phoenician trading post, then an opulent city under the Romans. The famous bridge was built in the 13th century, easing travel and enhancing Avignon’s attraction. As the choice of the papacy in the 14th century, Avignon became the capital of the Christian world, drawing the best architects and artists who left their indelible influence, changing the face of the city forever. Avignon is surrounded by ramparts and crowned by the Palace of the Popes, whose impressive size symbolized the pontifical power. Next to the palace stands the Cathedral and the Petit Palais, now a museum. UNESCO has declared this magnificent architecture, the Avignon bridge and part of the ramparts as a World Heritage site. Upon exploring the center city, it is easy to see that in addition to the strong medieval influence from the period of the papacy, Avignon also has many examples of 17th and 18th century Roman Baroque and French classic architecture, and 19th and 20th century works. pass ion 2014 n the 14th Century, Villeneuve lez Avignon was home to the cardinals. The medieval town of Villeneuve lez Avignon is located on the right bank of the Rhone River, facing Avignon. Villeneuve lez Avignon enjoys a magnificent setting, well-protected and preserved over the ages. Full of character, Villeneuve lez Avignon offers a gentle lifestyle and a special atmosphere. Fascinating and full of surprises, a visit to Villeneuve lez Avignon explores outstanding historical and architectural heritage. During the 14th Century, Pope Innocent VI founded the Chartreuse du Val-de-Bénédiction, the biggest in Europe, built at the base of the mighty Fort Saint-André. Philippe le Bel Tower, at the other end of the Avignon bridge, marked the entry into Villeneuve, located in the Kingdom of France. Also see, the Collegiate Church and its cloister, the Pierre-de-Luxembourg museum and St-André abbey and gardens.
