A HANNS EISLER CABARET
“Karyn Levitt is doing something which, to my ears, is new.
She allows (these songs) to bloom and be beautiful in a way
which is undoubtedly musically expressive.”
—IRVING WARDLE, MUSIC CRITIC OF THE LONDON TIMES

Come explore the musical treasures of Hanns Eisler—the gifted Austro-German composer who was Schoenberg’s student, Kurt Weill’s contemporary,
and Bertolt Brecht’s favorite collaborator —with soprano Karyn Levitt
and pianist/musical director Eric Ostling leading The Hanns Eisler Trio
(including world-renowned accordionist William Schimmel and famed
guitarist Ira Siegel.) The program is performed in English and German.
ABOUT HANNS EISLER
While many are familiar with Bertolt Brecht’s other frequent collaborator, Kurt Weill, Austro-German composer Hanns Eisler and his work has been
largely unfamiliar to popular audiences in America. Eisler, the first of Arnold
Schoenberg’s disciples to compose in the twelve-tone method, moved to
Berlin in 1925 where he developed a more “popular” musical style, and forged
a collaboration with Bertolt Brecht which lasted for the rest of Brecht’s life.
