Dr. Kit T. Sullivan, President
I consider the opportunity to
have served as President of the
Richmond Dental Society to
be one of the highlights of my
professional career. I thank you
for entrusting me with this great
honor over the past year. It was
a busy one and our organization
has made some great strides
thanks to the combined efforts
of many talented members. It is
inspiring to be surrounded by so
many great people. One thing I
learned about the board when I
stepped onto the ladder was that
there is tremendous experience,
enthusiasm and volunteerism that
is not seen in many organizations.
With this being the case, I know
our profession and our society
are in great hands!
There is not enough room in this
message to thank everyone who
helped me throughout the year,
but there are some individuals
that should receive special
thanks. Presidents come and
go, but our CE Chairman; Dr.
Norman Marks has been serving
for the past thirty years. He
has assisted each President in
securing quality CE courses and
monthly speakers. His dedication

Dr. Kaugars presented treasurers report.
Currently in combinationof checking and

approximately $102,000.00.
A report was given from the CE
committee by Dr. Marks. He asked
the board about the 2014 fall meeting
speaker and showed a video for an
inspiration speaker Brett Leake. We
were all in agreement that for the fall
induction of officers meeting this would
be a great speaker. Dr. Levenson gave
the VDA Board report and Linda Simon
spoke for Dr. Krause about the new
member committee and their upcoming
activities.
New business was reviewed including the
non-renew list. The list of members who
have not yet renewed their memberships
was divided for phone reminders from
Board members. The upcoming baseball
and golf outings were discussed by Dr.
Lambrechts. The Board decided to allow
Linda to purchase a new laptop as hers
is several years old now and a reminder
was given to Board members regarding
hotel reservations for the fall meeting.
There was nothing for the good of the
order. The meeting was adjourned.
The next RDS Board meeting is
scheduled for September 8th, 2014,
delegate caucus is on August 26th
and the next membership meeting is
September 11th.
RICHMOND DENTAL SOCIETY
MEETINGS AND COURSES FOR 2014-2015
Norman J. Marks, DDS, CE Committee Chairman
We are happy to announce the following outstanding meetings coming up!
September 11, 2014: This is our annual meeting to install the officers for the upcoming year and this year we will
have Brett Leake, a nationally known comedian who has performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and is a
headliner at many comedy clubs around the country. He is also a motivational speaker who will have you feeling great
about yourself and your life--- and don’t worry, he has a completely “clean” performance. Don’t miss this evening.
October 3, 2014: Dr. Jim Jackson, an alumnus of MCV (now known as VCU) School of Dentistry, is a Certified
Financial Planner and will speak to a subject dear to us all---Money. No matter how young you think you are,
retirement hits very soon (ask me how I know!). Jim will show you how to be able to retire comfortably when you want
to, so that when the time comes, you can continue to work if you want to and not because you have to. This course
is more valuable the younger you are, not older. Even if you just graduated, you must start planning now. You’ll thank
me in 30 years. This is a half day course.
December 5, 2014: Dr. Steve Rasner is a general dentist in Brigeton, NJ, a small community that has been devastated
by industry moving out--- yet he has developed a multi-million dollar, insurance free, fee-for-service practice. Dr.
Rasner will teach the protocols, both clinical and inter-personal to help you sky rocket your practice. Be sure to bring
your whole staff to this course!!
January 30, 2015: Dr. Gordon Christensen
What can you say? Dr. Christensen is the most sought after speaker in dentistry today. He is and has been, the
featured speaker at every major dental meeting in the country and is always in demand. We are very fortunate to have
him “all to ourselves” for a whole day.

Report from your VDA Board
Lanny Levenson, D.D.S.
It’s been a very fast summer and I
hope you had a good one. Fall is
almost here and it’s time to focus
on dentistry issues.
Currently
the most pressing subject is the
unfolding dialogue regarding fee
splitting. For a number of years,
the VDA has been requesting that
the Board of Dentistry provide
guidance for what is appropriate.
The Board of Dentistry responded
at the start of summer with
preliminary legislation which is
attached below. Subsequently, the
VDA provided a modification to this
language in response to the Board
of Dentistry. The VDA BOD believes
that the language in our response
addresses the spirit of our concern
and provides appropriate guidance.
This response can be seen below
and was recently received by the
Board of Dentistry.
For the second year, The Virginia
Meeting will be at the Homestead
from September 17 to 21. We hope
you are already planning to come,
but if you haven’t made plans
there remain options. If the hotel’s
block of rooms is filled, there are
nice places in town so you won’t
have to make the commute from
Covington.
Check with Carter
Brown at the VDA office if you
The latest from the VDA to the BOD:
On September 11th, the installation
of our new officers and new
members of the board is taking
place. The always warm and witty
Dr. Anne Adams will be doing the
installation. I am also pleased that
Dr. Terry Dickinson will speak to
the current issues facing dentistry
in his talk named “A Storm is Here,
Survival Is Optional.” Dr. Dickinson
has a national presence and
perspective and this promises to
be interesting and useful. Hope to
see you then.

Jim Jackson is a Certified Financial Planner®, and a principle at JBJ
Investment Partners, LLC, a wealth management firm and registered
investment advisor in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
Jim graduated from Duke University, the Medical College of Virginia School
of Dentistry and completed his Residency at the Harvard School of Dental
Medicine Children’s Hospital in 1964, following which, went on to establish
a private practice in Charleston, SC. There Jim spent the next twenty years of
his life managing a children’s dentistry practice and teaching at the MUSCi
College of Dental Medicine and the department of Pediatric Dentistry. All
the while, Jim had a mounting passion for investing and in the early 1980’s,
he began to transition into the field of financial planning. By 1982, Jim
Jackson was leading the American Dental Association’s seminars on Financial
Planning and Retirement, had published his first book titled “Investing for
the Professional”, and had founded Jackson Financial Co, Inc., a financial
planning and registered investment advisory firm.
Jim is the author of 4 books on financial planning and monthly financial
newsletter publication titled “The Jackson Letter.” Perhaps it is his insight
into life as a private practitioner that makes him such a great financial
planner; all the same, Catherine Faddisii put it best when she said, “Jim
Jackson has an uncommon ability to distill complex financial concepts into
easy-to-understand pieces.” Jim’s most recent book, “No One Loves Your
Money like You Do”, hits bookstores this October and offers the ultimate
retirement planning guide for Business Owners and Private Practitioners.
As a partner in the newly formed JBJ Investment Partners, LLC Jim remains
in the Lowcountry with his wife Dee, where he continues to advise clients
on investments and retirement planning, overseeing and managing assets for
clients from coast to coast.
