Apologetics Beyond ReAson
In this accessible and engaging work, veteran apologist Jim
Sire gives us eyes to see the myriad “signals of transcendence” all around us that point to the specific truth of God
in Christ. Focusing on the power of good literature—even
from those who deny the existence of God—enables us to
perceive and testify to God’s reality in ways that rational
argument alone cannot.
All inspiration is rooted in God the Creator, and some of
God’s truth lies buried until an artist exposes it. Good literature, written from a Christian standpoint or not, displays
multiple examples of our human understandings of God,
the universe and ourselves. It testifies to the existence of a
transcendent realm and often, in fact, to the truth of the
Christian faith.

Life confronts us with an endless stream of questions: Is
there a God, and if so, how can I know anything about who
or what God is? Is the quest for truth an elusive dream? How
should I live and what should I value? What happens at the
end of my biological existence?
These questions lead people of every creed and belief to
consider important existential concepts. But many people
wrestle with the relationship between faith and reason as
they dig into the roots of this theological and philosophical
pursuit. Does a shared interest in a common set of questions indicate that philosophy and theology are close kin
and allies, or are they competitors vying for our souls, each
requiring a loyalty that excludes the other?
In Faith and Reason, Steve Wilkens edits a debate between
three different understandings of the relationship between
faith and reason, between theology and philosophy. The
first viewpoint, Faith and Philosophy in Tension, proposes
faith and reason as hostile, exclusive opposites, each
dangerous to the integrity of the other. The second, Faith
Seeking Understanding, suggests that faithful Christians are
called to make full use of their rational faculties to aid in
the understanding and interpretation of what they believe
by faith. In the third stance, Thomistic Synthesis, natural
reason acts as a handmaiden to theology by actively pointing
people toward salvation and deeper knowledge of spiritual
truths.
Bringing together multiple views on the relationship
between faith, philosophy and reason, this introduction to
a timeless quandary will help you navigate, with rigor and
joy, one of the most significant discussions of the Christian
community.
Steve Wilkens (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is
professor of philosophy and ethics at Azusa Pacific University. He has also taught as an adjunct faculty member at
Mount San Antonio College, Fuller Theological Seminary

School of Theology. His books include Hidden Worldviews

Unlike many approaches to ethics, this book foundationally turns to Scripture, going only as far as Scripture itself
goes. The result is an overview of biblical ethics that not
only addresses the life of love and wisdom to be lived out by
Christians as virtuous individuals, but also as Christians in
community, in society and in a world of God’s creation. This
comprehensive study is the place to begin on the journey of
living wisely, faithfully and obediently.

in extensive conference ministry in the United States and
overseas. He served as the third president of Columbia International University for twenty-two years.
Paul Copan is the Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and
Ethics at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Formerly he served

and practical ministry.”
William R. Baker, professor of New Testament, Hope
International University, and editor of Stone-Campbell
Journal
For many Christians who believe the Bible is the ultimate
authority for faith and life, questions about the role and
value of the church’s traditions can be difficult to tackle.
In this wide-ranging book, veteran teacher Bob Rea
tackles these barriers to understanding the faith and
practice of our spiritual forebears. He covers how Christians
understand church tradition, why it is beneficial to broaden
our ideas of community and how tradition helps us understand ministry. Rea not only skillfully explains why church
history matters—he shows why it should matter to us.
Robert F. Rea (MDiv, Emmanuel School of Religion;
PhD, Saint Louis University) is a professor of church history
and historical theology at Lincoln Christian University. He
previously served as a pastor and youth minister, and has
contributed to publications such as the Encyclopedia of Early
Christianity, Christian Standard and the Stone-Campbell Journal.

How could the life, let alone the death, of one man two
thousand years ago be the salvation of the human race? The
biblical explanation is the atonement: the crucified one was
the Son of God, acting and suffering in cooperation with
God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ has universal, inclusive
and cosmic significance, because in him the Creator acts
and suffers. There is also a special relationship between
Christ and humanity—he is “with” us, and he is “for” us.
Donald Macleod considers seven key words Christians
have used through the centuries to describe what happened
on the cross: substitution, expiation, propitiation, reconciliation, satisfaction, redemption and victory.
Donald Macleod (DD, Westminster Theological
Seminary), now retired, served as professor and chair of
systematic theology at the Free Church of Scotland College
in Edinburgh. He pastored Kilmallie Free Church and
also served at Patrick Highland Free Church in Glasgow,
Scotland.

Jesus, the Temple and the Coming
Son of Man
A Commentary on Mark 13
The Gospels contain many hard sayings of Jesus, but
perhaps none have puzzled and intrigued readers as much
as Jesus’ discourse on the coming of the Son of Man in Mark
13. Is Jesus speaking entirely of an event in the near future,
a coming destruction of the temple? Or is he referring
to a distant, end-of-the-world event? Or might he even be
speaking of both near and distant events? But in that case,
which words apply to which event, and how can we be sure?
Seasoned Gospels scholar Robert Stein follows up his
major commentary on Mark with this even closer reading
of Mark 13. In this macro-lens commentary he walks us step
by step through the text and its questions, leading us to a
compelling interpretive solution.
Robert H. Stein is senior professor of New Testament
interpretation at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. He is the author of An Introduction to the Parables of Jesus, The Method and Message of Jesus’
Teachings, Difficult Passages in the New Testament, Luke (New
American Commentary), A Basic Guide to Interpreting the Bible,

In this magisterial synthesis, Paul A. Rainbow presents the
most complete account of the theology of the Johannine
corpus available today. Both critical and comprehensive,
this volume includes all the books of the New Testament
ascribed to John: the Gospel, the three epistles and the book
of Revelation.
While not proclaiming a definitive position on the
question of authorship, this work seeks to shed light on the
theology common to all the New Testament authors. John’s
root beliefs concerning God, humanity, sin, the world and
the significance of the Christ-event on eschatology unite the
examined books with the rest of the New Testament canon.
The Johannine corpus also highlights the important areas of
Christology, soteriology and ecclesiology in a manner that is
worth exploration.
Organizing John’s ideas by the main characters around
whom they revolve, the Johannine universe consists of
persons divine and human, and their relationships with
each other. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, faithful believers and
the rest of the world are the main cast of characters that
make up the rich set of writings considered in this exhaustive analysis.
Paul A. Rainbow (DPhil, Oxford) is professor of New
Testament at Sioux Falls Seminary. He is the author of The
Pith of the Apocalypse and The Way of Salvation.

Church History
Edited by Donald M. Lewis, Richard V. Pierard
Evangelicalism is not merely a North American religiously
charged ideology that dominates the popular mind. Over
the last century, evangelicalism has taken on global proportions. It has spread from its northern heartlands and formed
burgeoning new centers of vibrant life in the global South.
Alongside Islam, it is now arguably the most important and
dynamic religious movement in the world today.
This tectonic shift has been closely watched by some
scholars of religion, though it is merely a ghost in our
international news stories. Now, in Global Evangelicalism, a
gathering of front-rank historians of evangelicalism offer
conceptual and regional overviews of evangelicalism, as
well as probings of its transdenominationalism and views of
gender.
Donald M. Lewis (PhD, Oxford University) is associate
professor of church history at the University of British
Columbia. He has written and edited several other books,
including the two-volume Blackwell Dictionary of Evangelical
Biography, 1730-1860.
Richard V. Pierard (MA, California State University;
PhD, University of Iowa) is an active lecturer and author
of several books and articles on history, politics and the
church. He served as a professor of history at Indiana State
University and then as a scholar-in-residence and Stephen
Phillips Professor of History at Gordon College.

Evangelical Postcolonial Conversations
Global Awakenings in Theology and Praxis
In 2010, the Postcolonial Roundtable gathered at Gordon
College to initiate a new conversation regarding the significance of postcolonial discourse for evangelicalism. The
present volume is the fruit of that discussion. Addressing
themes like nationalism, mission, Christology, catholicity
and shalom, these groundbreaking essays explore new possibilities for evangelical thought, identity and practice.
The contributors demonstrate the resources for postcolonial criticism within the evangelical tradition, as well
as the need to subject evangelical thought to an ever-new
critique to prevent the formation of new centers of domination. Evangelical Postcolonial Conversations models the kind of
open dialogue that the church needs in order to respond
appropriately to the pressing concerns of the world today.

Richard Rice guides readers through the seven most
significant theodicies—approaches that have been used to
make sense of suffering in light of God’s justice or control.
He considers the strengths and weaknesses of each option,
while always guiding us toward greater understanding and
compassion. Rice goes further by offering guidelines for
constructing a personal framework for dealing practically
with suffering, one that draws from philosophy, ethics,
theology and real-world experience.
Intending for each of us to find a response to our
suffering that is both intellectually satisfying and personally
authentic, Rice provides the resources for meeting this challenge. He weaves together the theoretical side of the theodicies with personal stories of people who have experienced
great suffering. While no framework can perfectly account
for the problem of pain, we are left with the overarching
insight that suffering never has the final word.
Richard Rice is professor of religion at Loma Linda
University in Loma Linda, California. He is the author of
several books, including God’s Foreknowledge and Man’s Free
Will and Reason and the Contours of Faith.

The Call
New York City
We live in dark times. Christians wonder: Are the best days
of the Christian faith behind us? Has modernity made Christianity irrelevant and impotent? Is society beyond all hope of
redemption and renewal?
In Renaissance, Os Guinness declares no. Throughout
history, the Christian faith has transformed entire cultures
and civilizations, building cathedrals and universities,
proclaiming God’s goodness, beauty and truth through
art and literature, science and medicine. Christianity may
similarly change the world again today. The church can be
revived to become a renewing power in our society—if we
answer the call to a new Christian renaissance that challenges darkness with the hope of Christian faith.
In this hopeful appeal for cultural transformation, Guinness shares opportunities for Christians, on both local and
global levels, to win back the West and contribute constructively to the human future. Hearkening back to similar
pivotal points in history, Guinness encourages Christians in
the quest for societal change.
Os Guinness (DPhil, Oxford) is the author or editor of
more than twenty-five books, including The American Hour,
Time for Truth and The Case for Civility. A frequent speaker
and prominent social critic, he is the founder of the Trinity
Forum and has been a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution and a guest scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for

The Crisis and Promise of Following Jesus Today
The most urgent call upon God’s people is to live as
followers of Jesus. The most indicting critique against the
church is as simple: its failure to do so.

People ask many questions about how their lives
relate to the world. What are our lives in this world
about? What are we to make of being human? Why
are we here? Is there a reason we are alive, and, if so,
how would we know what that is? These questions are
brought on at times by beauty and joy, but also by the
daunting facts of our own lives or of the world around
us. We look around in doubt, in pain, in suffering.
These are human questions asked throughout history
by those inside and outside the church.
We long to renew our hope for a world broken and
hurting. And it is we, God’s people living in the power of
the Holy Spirit, who are called to become this hope. Here is
the crisis: we are made and redeemed for this calling, but it
slides through our fingers. Here is the promise: living and
practicing who and why we are is our Christian vocation
whenever and wherever we may be.
Will you answer the call?
Mark Labberton is president of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Labberton came to Fuller after
sixteen years as senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church of

God calls his people to mission. But the demands of
crosscultural ministry can be overwhelming and draining,
leading to discouragement and burnout. All of our strategies and methodologies for reaching others are useless if we
are incapable of living the holy, faithful lives God intends
for us. Yet God does not leave us on our own. The Holy Spirit
equips us to succeed and thrive spiritually in preparation of
becoming God’s message bearers in the world.
Spiritual formation and discipleship are at the core of
effective and fruitful mission. Mission professional Ryan
Shaw unpacks ten fundamental spiritual keys we need to
practice in order to have a successful outer global witness.
Ryan Shaw is international lead facilitator and president
of Student Volunteer Movement 2. He is the author of
Waking the Giant and holds an MA in Intercultural Studies
from Fuller Seminary. He and his wife Kelly currently serve
as missionaries in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

All mission is local—the people of God joining the work of
God in a particular place. In Starting Missional Churches Mark
Lau Branson and Nicholas Warnes introduce us to seven
missional churches and identify best practices while examining common challenges regarding their genesis.
Using stories, interviews with pastors and a look at
common preconceived notions of church planting in the
West, this guide serves as a reference to those interested in
bringing the body of Christ to their specific context—and in
how that context shapes the structure of their congregation.
Curated by a pastor and a Fuller Theological Seminary
professor, this work provides a background of various historical methods of church planting. Learn from these stories
how to build a vibrant, engaging church—one that serves as
a fixture of redemptive witness in our world.
Mark Lau Branson (MA, Claremont School of Theology;
EdD, University of San Francisco) is the Homer L. Goddard
Associate Professor of the Ministry of the Laity at Fuller
Theological Seminary where he teaches courses on congregational leadership and community engagement.
Nicholas Warnes is the organizing pastor of Northland

What is the church’s role in suicide prevention?
While we tend to view the work of suicide prevention as
the task of professional therapists and doctors, the church
can also play a vital role. Studies show that religious faith is
an important factor reducing the risk of suicide. Yet many
pastors, chaplains and pastoral counselors feel overwhelmed
and unprepared to prevent suicides.
In this practical handbook, psychologist Karen Mason
equips ministry professionals to work with suicidal individuals. Integrating theology and psychology, she shows
how pastoral caregivers can be agents of hope, teaching the
significance of life, monitoring those at risk and intervening
when they need help. Because church leaders are often
present in people’s lives in seasons of trouble and times of
crisis, they can provide comfort in the midst of suffering and
offer guidance for the future.
When our church members struggle in the darkness, the
darkness need not overcome them. Discover how you and
your church can be proactive in caring for those at risk of
self-harm.

The Relational Soul
Moving from False Self to Deep Connection
What does loneliness tell us?
“Be it chronic or acute, slight or significant, loneliness
is proof of our relational design. At the core of our being
is this truth—we are designed for and defined by our
relationships,” Plass and Cofield write. “We were born with
a relentless longing to participate in the lives of others.
Fundamentally, we are relational souls.”
No matter our conditioning, God is out to reclaim and
restructure the deepest terrain of the human soul by helping
us shed our reactive “False Self” and put on our receptive
“True Self.” Through spiritual disciplines and a conscious
participation in the love of the Trinity, we transform our
self-awareness and our connection with other people.
Authored by counselor Dr. Richard Plass and spiritual
director James Cofield, The Relational Soul brings together
concepts from psychology and spiritual formation. Each
chapter includes introductory stories and practical “If this is
true, what about you?” questions to help readers engage in
relationships in more life-giving ways.
Richard Plass is president of CrossPoint Ministry in
Jeffersonville, Indiana, where he cultivates spiritual formation in the lives of leaders. After serving in pastoral ministry
for twenty-five years, he obtained a PhD from Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary in counseling.
James Cofield is director of CrossPoint Ministry, where
he offers spiritual direction and retreat leadership. He
taught communications at Tennessee Temple University
and Greek at Dallas Theological Seminary, and served as a
church planter and pastor for over fifteen years. Jim holds a
ThM from Dallas Theological Seminary.
