JANUARY 2015
PRESIDENTS LETTER
Dear Fellow Club Members,
Well it’s another New Year. Time to saddle up and get on
the Merry-Go-Round of life again!!
Time to make some New Year’s Resolutions: … lose weight, exercise more, spend more time with the
family, eat less fatty food, save more, spend less, be a
better listener, get to the gym, drink less, be a better
partner, sit thru more chick-flicks, get less speeding fines,
finally get the diff-locks, spend less time with my mates
and more time at home, get caught up with all the yard
work & maintenance, spend less time playing golf or
spend more time playing golf?, stop spending too-much
money on that car, do the Cape York trip, get rid of that
V8, buy a ‘sensible’ car …
Hmmm … I’ve noticed something here… Seems
everything I like is, either illegal, immoral, expensive or
fattening!!! Go figure.

How do we grade a Trip?
Trip grades are based upon previous experience and / or from a recent reconnaissance
trip.
The weather can have a significant bearing on the track conditions encountered
before and during the trip. Inclement weather can quickly change an Easy trip to the
difficulty of a Medium or Hard one.
All vehicles attending a trip are to be in good mechanical condition as well as
registered and insured for the intended trip.
RACQ membership is strongly recommended.

Recovery Information
Vehicle recovery may be necessary on any grade of trip. Any recovery is to be
undertaken under the sole direction of the Trip Leader.
Most recoveries involve the use of a snatch strap. A safe distance away when
using a snatch strap is at least twice the length of the strap being used in all
directions from the tow points on both vehicles.
Winching as a recovery method can be extremely hazardous. People have been
killed or seriously injured due to a cable breakage or tow point failure because of
the extreme forces exerted during winching. The utmost care must be taken when
recovering a vehicle using a winch is undertaken. The safe distance is at least 3
times the length of the cable used in all directions from the winching points.
Standing behind a tree or object which is inside the safe recovery distance is not
permitted. Never stand in front or behind any vehicle involved in a recovery,
regardless of the distances.
Rules for doggie friendly trips
1. Doggies are not allowed on trips unless the trip is explicitly marked so
2. Doggies must be under control of their owner at all times
3. Doggies must be well socialized—with other doggies, animals and people
4. Doggies must be well behaved
5. Owners are responsible for their own doggies and their actions, the club takes
no responsibility for your doggie
6. Owners are expected to pick up after their doggie, even if they see others and
their doggies not being so considerate
**Some parks are in a paralysis tic area, it is recommended that doggies have been
treated with anti-tic treatment no more than 2 weeks prior

Trip Report – Christmas Kahnacross
The Inaugural Annual Christmas Khanacross
OK so the title is something of a mouthful. Don’t blame me; I didn’t come up with it.
But whatever it was called, eighteen competitors set out in an atmosphere of friendly
rivalry to challenge the four ‘runs’ that had been set up at Janowen Hills for the
Christmas Party weekend. Each run was different, one took in a steep descent, a tight
route around some trees and back up a slope; two was a long mud run, three an up
and over and round track with very tight turns and four, picking up and reversing a
trailer.
For various reasons setting up the ‘runs’ took place later than intended and some
drivers took advantage of this by driving the tricky parts in advance. Did this give
them an edge? I’m not entirely sure but judging from the results, it seems not.
Our good lady wives and offspring were sworn in as Marshals. Was this their chance
for revenge?
Briefings completed and questions answered, drivers set out to prove their worth.
Points were scored if a vehicle stopped or touched a gate. The closer to the start, the
greater number of points scored. Sounds easy? Hmmm. Not when the lowest score is
the aim.
Not mentioning any names, some of the ‘highlights’ (is that the right word?) included:






Going through gate 3 instead of gate 8, and blaming the spectacles they were
wearing
Claiming that the starting gate was too narrow
Losing traction and bogging down in mud
Returning with a large tree branch on the roof
Hitting the gas so hard that the Land Rover jumped sideways into a gate
Trying to reverse a trailer having never done it before
You really had to be there to appreciate it. Suffice to say that eighteen Land Rovers
finished the day without recourse to using any spray on mud to enhance their
appearance.
Thanks to all the Marshals for their rapidly acquired expertise in scoring, and their
close watching for potential violations. Thanks to all the competitors for giving it their
best shot and thanks to Anthony for organising the many and highly inventive reasons
for awarding prizes.
Finally, it must be mentioned that Liam completed the entire four courses with a
perfect score of just 1 which is the lowest possible. A well deserved overall winner.

The results? Here they
are, but don’t read too
much into the range of

Jaguar Land Rover Develops Transparent Pillar And
‘Follow-Me’ Ghost Car Navigation Research
Jaguar Land Rover reveals its '360 Virtual Urban Windscreen' research, which uses
transparent roof pillars to give the driver a 360o view outside the car
To aid navigation on busy urban roads, a ghost car could be projected in front of the
car for the driver to follow
The concept uses future Heads-Up Display technology to provide information to keep
the driver's eyes on the road and reduce distraction
'360 Virtual Urban Windscreen' and 'Follow-Me Ghost Car Navigation' are part of a suite
of new concept technologies that Jaguar Land Rover is developing to reduce the potential for accidents
Whitley, UK: Jaguar Land Rover has launched a research project to develop technologies that will offer drivers a 360o view out of their vehicle, uninterrupted by the pillars
that support the roof.
A screen would be embedded in the surface of each pillar inside the car and would take
a live video feed from cameras covering the angles outside the car usually obscured in
the blind spots created by the A, B and C-pillars.
Pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles would be visible all around the car - and by
combining the transparent pillars with an advanced high quality Heads-Up display, the
movement of other road users could be highlighted to the driver with an on-screen halo moving across the car's virtual windscreen.
16
January 15
Land Rover News
When the driver indicates to change direction, when they move their head to look over
their shoulder during an overtake manoeuvre, or as the vehicle approaches a junction,
the system would automatically make the left or right-hand side pillars transparent.
Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, said:
"Our ultimate aim is to reduce road accidents and enhance the urban driving experience. The Jaguar Land Rover research team is developing this technology to improve
visibility and to give the driver with the right information at the right time. If we can
keep the driver's eyes on the road ahead and present information in a non-distracting
way, we can help drivers make better decisions in the most demanding and congested
driving environments."
The full potential for the 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen would be delivered by connecting the virtual windscreen to the Cloud. By connecting the car to roadside infrastructure and businesses in the urban landscape, the Virtual Urban Windscreen could present information ranging from petrol station prices to the number of parking spaces
available, so drivers won't have to look for this information themselves.
The connected car could also enhance navigation by advising the driver to turn left or
right at more visible landmarks, such as pubs or shops, rather than just road signs or
street names.
While the most intuitive and efficient way to navigate to a specific location is to be able
to follow someone who knows the best route - so the Jaguar Land Rover team is developing 'Follow-MeGhost Car Navigation',which projects an image of a vehicle in front of
the driver's car for them to follow, turn by turn, to their destination.
"Driving on city streets can be a stressful experience, but imagine being able to drive
across town without having to look at road signs, or be distracted trying to locate a
parking space as you drive by," added Dr Epple. "We want to present all of this information on a Heads-Up Display in the driver's eye-line, so the driver doesn't have to
seek it out for themselves and take their eyes off the road ahead."

First ever Range Rover up for auction
The Range Rover has been in production for over 45 years now, but the first ever model to roll off the production line is going up for auction.
Chassis number 001, will be going under the hammer at The Salon Privé Sale in September and is estimated to fetch around £140,000.
This particular model was built between 24 November and 17 December 1969, almost
six months before the official launch date of the Range Rover. The car’s first owner was
Michael Furlong, who was also responsible for creating two promotional films about the
car.
Due to registration alterations and a re-spray, chassis number 001 was lost for a number of years. Having passed form owner to owner, the model was ‘rediscovered’ by its
current owner in the 1990s. The vehicle was then fully resorted over a six-year period
and repainted back to its original Olive Green finish.
Despite its patchy history, this initial model is still in possession of its original engine,
gearbox, axles, chassis and aluminium bonnet. Early estimations reveal the car could
sell for between £100,000 to £140,000.

On the negative side there is a slight fuel leak at the top of the fuel tank when filled to
full and I think it is the filler hose and I have a replacement.
There is some body damage on some panels and the vehicle needs a repaint. With a
little TLC this vehicle would make a great off road club car.
