CAPE FEAR CORVETTES. MAY 2014 CLUB OFFICERS PRESIDENT Richard Fox flfox28409@aol.com VICE PRESIDENT Tony Caracciola TREASURER Greg Stanley gstanley3@ec.rr.com SECRETARY Richard Randall rrrzr1@yahoo.com CAR SHOW CHAIRMAN Gordon Boyd gboyd1@ec.rr.com WEBSITE/WEBMASTER John Talatinian jtalatnian@gmail.com NEWSLETTER Peter Ziehl 910-371-2375 203-376-5391 a_caracciolo@bellsouth.net peter@chefziehl.com MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN Dave Flinchbaugh dflinchbaugh@pga.com NCM Ambassador dpaul79912@aol.com Facebook Administrators Don Paulson John Talatinian, Gordon Boyd, Ken Bomhan, jtalatnian@gmail.com gboyd1@ec.rr.com Publicity Chairman NEXT CLUB MEETING: June 10 2014 6:30 p.m. Jeff Gorden Chevrolet In the Used Car showroom South College Road, Wilmington NC MEETING MINUTES May 13th 2014 Call to Order: President Richard Fox called the meeting to order at 6:30pm, welcoming the 45 members and significant others who were present. Introduced were new member Chris Murray, owner of a 2006 ZO6, and guest visitors Esther and Shankay. Chris mentioned that he is soon leaving the U.S. for about a year, and is seeking a buyer for his car. Richard made special mention of the return of Newsletter Editor Peter Ziehl, following his recent recuperation from surgery; Peter was warmly greeted with a round of applause from the members. With his renewed physical health, he has earned the nickname “A-Fib”, thus joining the ranks of other buff bodies such as “Jay-Z” and “Marky-Mark”. Minutes: The minutes of the April meeting, as recorded in the newsletter and posted on the Club website, were approved without dissent. Membership Status and Financial Report: Treasurer Greg Stanley reported that as of the end of April, the Club had 73 fully-paid members. Greg’s thorough review of the Club’s income and expenses for April has us on a solid financial footing. The subject of Associate Members was again brought up, for brief discussion; Associates have by-and-large been spouses, tacitly understood to be members, but because they do not pay dues their status as voting club members has been unclear. Suggestions were offered about using a single dues fee to cover two memberships, or to add a reduced additional fee for the spouse/significant other. A major point was made that many of the “others” contribute significantly of their time and expense to Club events. This issue was tabled without resolution for the time being. Membership Chairman Dave Flinchbaugh returned from a multi-week business trip out of state, and talked of his efforts to consolidate an updated membership roster ASAP. Some member e-mail addresses are in question, so if you’re not sure about the information that will go into the revised roster (any info. not just e-mail address), please contact Dave (dflinchbaugh@pga.com). National Corvette Museum: Club Ambassador and Lifetime NCM Member Don Paulsen presented recent Museum news. CFC’s contribution to the One Acre Club is at 3500.00 of the 15,000.00 needed, and although a multi-year time frame remains available to satisfy the Club’s pledge, Don requested that members keep this mind, and make their (tax-exempt) donations in as timely a manner as possible. Don noted that CFC is a One Acre Club Member, which gives us certain perks, such as more personalized factory tours, and access to certain HPDE events. Having attended April’s Bash at the museum, Don recounted his and Debra’s pleasant time, including: A factory tour, some of which are being conducted by former CFC member Jim Rizzuti; presentations by Tadge Juechter (Chief Corvette Engineer) and Harlan Charles (Corvette Product Manager) on the new C7 Z06, scheduled to go sale in early 2015; and a viewing of the sinkhole and the unfortunate eight ‘Vettes that were recovered and are being displayed through early August. August will be the Museum’s 2014 Caravan and 20th Anniversary Celebration; contact Don and/or the NCM website for details. Don reported that the paving of the Motorsports Park tracks is proceeding, and will be ready in time for the August festivities. Don and Debra also had a chance to see ex-CFC member Bob McCall (now with Queen City Corvettes in Charlotte) at the Bash. Finally, Don has raffle tickets available for a red C7 coupe in 2LT trim, 10.00 per ticket, drawing to be held at the Caravan. Old Business: The (successful) Lake Waccamaw/Charity Poker Run was briefly discussed. Again, many thanks to those who contributed their efforts. New Business: President Richard and Sandy hosted a meeting of the Club’s board at their lovely home on Saturday, April 26, with the agenda comprising planning for the rest of this year. Following is a rundown of upcoming calendar plans for the Club (more complete information will be found in flyers posted in our newsletter): 1)Sat. 5/17 Rims On The River—downtown Wilmington, for cars 1980 and older. Possibly a luncheon get-together around noon, maybe Elijah’s? Show is 9a-4p. If planning to attend, meet at Peter Ziehl’s shop 8:45a. 2)Sun. 5/18 Caro-Vettes Show in Jacksonville. If planning to attend, meet at Harris-Teeter at Porter’s Neck 8:30a. Mention was made that the Caro-Vettes Club may be undergoing some changes, but as of now this event is on. 3) Sat. 6/7 Myrtle Beach Corvette Club, Broadway at the Beach. If planning to attend, meet at Harris-Teeter/Dental Works in Leland 8:30a. Club Show Chairman Gordon Boyd mentioned that our Club consistently receives the trophy for best attendance by another club at this event, and that much goodwill is earned for us by joining them there—the same holds for other club shows, of course, but this one has historically been a very reciprocally supportive relationship. Pre-registration ( recommended. 4) Sun. 6/22 Blueberry Festival, Burgaw Town Center. Has a judged show for any cars. 5) Wed. 6/25 and Thurs. 6/26 The Great Race. This is a long-distance race, sponsored by Hagerty, traveling from Maine to Florida. The dates listed comprise North Carolina stops along the route: 6/25 in New Bern, 6/26 in Clinton then travelling to downtown Wilmington (Front St.). Eligible autos are 25 years or older, and Peter Ziehl, who has the information about this event, indicates that some of the entries are accompanied by full Mechanical ICU’s, so it should be quite a hoot to check it out at some point along our local route. Please get in touch with Peter for details. 6) Sat. 8/2 NCCAR (North Carolina Center For Automotive Research) Open Track Day in Garysburg, NC. Last year was CFC’s first exposure to this event, and it was uniformly praised by those who attended. The flyer in the newsletter has details. Be mindful of the fact that helmets are required for all drivers and passengers, that all cars must pass a technical inspection, and that harness restraints are required for race-prepared cars. It’s a well-organized opportunity for different levels of track driving (including high-speed), and the 100.00 fee is a bargain for the 4 X 15 minute sessions of track time. Since it’s an 8am (to 4pm) event, staying overnight Friday makes sense. Don Helms is familiar with accommodations up there, and may be able to provide you with info. if you’re interested in attending. 7) Sat. 9/6 Queen City Corvette Show, Charlotte. A chance to visit Rick Hendrick’s private car collection (for a nominal fee), and a chance to check in with Bob McCall—I dare you to name something better for the first weekend in September! (possible group departure on Fri. not yet decided). 8) Sun. 9/21 CFC Car Show (see below) 9) Sun. 10/5 2nd Annual CFC Picnic, Moore’s Creek National Battlefield. This event is now scheduled. Arrive 11a, eat about 12n, chamois-off rain-drenched cars about 1p. 10) Sat. 10/18 Darlington. The complete structure for the day’s plan is pretty well set, thanks to Richard’s efforts. Following is the arrangement: Each car will be entered with a 30.00 non-refundable fee, payable to CFC and either sent to or given to Greg Stanley. Richard’s assessment is that our club needs to enter at least 15 cars; if we can accomplish that, we’ll be able to open registration to other clubs (e.g., Mustang, Queen City) to bolster our participation, and, if we might turn a small profit from this event, to further our contribution to the Club’s donation to NCM’s One Acre Club. The tentative schedule is arrival at the track at 11:30, followed by our laps and photo opportunities, and then our cruise to a site for a club luncheon around 1:00p. Refunds of the 30.00 fee will be made if the event is cancelled. Richard also noted that our future prospects for Rockingham don’t appear too promising, owing to mutual difficulties in handling how this past year’s arrangements were handled. He deserves the membership’s thanks for dealing with this matter with tact and courtesy, and we can be assured that the Rockingham staff has full respect for Cape Fear Corvettes. Very much on the plus side, Darlington is closing in on “most favored status” as a destination track-day for CFC. 11) Sat. Nov 15 2nd Annual CFC Road Rally. This is in the preliminary stage of planning. Peter Ziehl has taken charge of it. New Event: Richard announced the initiation of a new Club Event, the 3rd Wednesday of each month Hump Day Cruise & Meal, to commence Wed. 5/21 at Rucker John’s—chosen to be the initial gathering spot because of their sponsorship of our Club Show. Meeting time to cruise to restaurant TBD, or meet at Rucker John’s at 7p. Hopefully this can evolve into a regular monthly get-together. CLUB SHOW UPDATE: We have many people helping, as always, with preparations for the annual Club Show. Vice-President Tony Caracciolo discussed the situation with club-logo shirts (required for members at the show), and their availability at both Queensboro Shirts and Best Uniforms. Club Show Chairman Gordon Boyd (and co-chairperson Ellen Boyd) updated us on a number of things: --Sponsors have covered all of our show’s trophy needs --June 1 is the new deadline for ordering Club-Show T-shirts (10.00 per/12.00 for XXL)— please get your money to Greg Stanley. --Ellen provided an update on the progress by John Talatinian on our website. A private password will be distributed to us, and all looks good. John can use our photos, notes, etc. to build up our website, please send him whatever you’d like. Remember that we now have complete control over the site, and we can organize it as we see fit. (john.talatinian@hp.com). --Gordon reminds to distribute out Club Show flyers at any shows you attend—or any ‘Vettes you see parked anywhere. --Jim Martin is helping to coordinate a group club picture at our 9/21 show; please be prepared to arrive a bit early: details to follow. An aerial photo-op is still a possibility. Please remember to thank Bobby Smith for his work on behalf of the Club. He tried at length to arrange an event for us at Seymour Johnson AFB, and despite dealing with certain physical issues, his commitment to helping CFC is exemplary. President Fox adjourned the meeting at 7:45pm. A group of members cruised to Carraba’s for a social hour and dinner. Minutes respectfully submitted by Richard Randall, Secretary I will work on getting a list of everyone’s birthday and updating this with names as quickly as I can. Please e-mail Dave Flinchbaugh (dflinchbaugh@pga.com) the day and month of you’re and your spouse/ significant other birthdays President’s Message May 2013 Cape Fear Corvettes biggest charitable fund raising effort is our annual car show. See John Fort or myself for more details Bash I just wish that you could have been at the Bash with us. The sinkhole and recovered damaged cars was one of the highlights or should I say lowlights of the show. Much attention was given to the sinkhole and plans for the hole and damaged cars. The plans have not yet been finalized so stay tuned. The Z06 was the car of the day; both coupe and convertible look to be race ready. I am just not sure that I could get either in my driveway without damage, They are low and with the carbon fiber nose pieces it looks expensive to maintain. Seminars were presented on the Z06 by both the interior and exterior design managers. Also Tadge Juechter and Harlan Charles gave overviews on the 2015 models. The Performance Data package will be almost as good as in the race cars. Motorsport park gave an update on progress with the big announcement of Michelin being named the tire sponsor for the track. The seminar on the race team by Doug Fehan, race team manager and Tommy Milner, driver was great. They talked a lot about the new cars and plans for this year. We also spent time with Jim Ruzzuti who loves Bowling green and the NCM.
