The Washington State Legislature will convene for Regular Session on Monday, January 11, 2016. This year’s session is scheduled to last for 60 days is expected to adjourn in early March. Once again, education is expected to be a major issue for consideration as legislators addresses ongoing issues with the McCleary decision and funding basic education. Other issues could also come to the forefront in anticipation of the 2016 election cycle, which will see all statewide offices on the ballot in November. In preparation for the 2016 session, the Regional Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee established five legislative objectives that cover issues that have a significant impact on chamber members and the Tri-Cities economy. The following list is a brief outline of these objectives identified by the committee and approved by the Regional Chamber’s Board of Directors: 11 Education & Workforce Training Energy & Carbon Emissions Tax & Fiscal Policy Wage & Hour Reform Water Resources Support efforts of the state’s higher education system to better meet the needs of employers in Washington. Advocate for a change in state policy to recognize hydroelectricity as a renewable energy source and support policies that encourage private sector investment in carbon reducing technology. Support reauthorization of Local Revitalization Financing (LRF). Reauthorization of LRF, along with modifications towards tax increment financing (TIF), will help promote economic development efforts in the Tri-Cities and other communities across the state. Promote consistency between state and federal wage and hour law when there is no clearly articulated, policy-based reason for more restrictive state standards. Also, advocate against drastic increases to the minimum wage – these are not economically viable in smaller communities in Eastern Washington, like the Tri-Cities. The Regional Chamber supports policies that will help address the region’s water needs. Increased water storage and protection of our existing dams help ensure our community and state have reliable access to water that can address future growth.
