WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine Issue 0ne 3 Proper Lockout-Tagout Procedures Increased safety, improved productivity, and reduced costs We’ve all heard stories of catastrophic injuries on the job – even fatalities. It’s a tragedy for workers and their families, a disaster for friends and coworkers, and a nightmare for supervisors, managers, and business owners. It is estimated that 10 percent of industrial accidents are lockout/tagout related. Because of the frequency and seriousness of these accidents, OSHA seeks to improve worker safety with a special focus on lockout/tagout (LOTO) standards. LOTO procedures are the standard most often cited by OSHA for manufacturers, and lack of procedures or inadequately documented procedures are among the most commonly cited LOTO violations. OSHA inspectors are specifically instructed to look for documented procedures during lockout/tagout inspections. According to STD 1-7.3 –29 CFR 1910.147, Inspection Procedures and Interpretive Guidance, OSHA inspectors are instructed to “ask the employer for documentation including procedures for the control of hazardous energy.” The world leader in lockout/tagout products and services, Brady offer innovative solutions that enhance safety, productivity, and cost savings. How do you choose a sorbent? Actually, start at the end, in the trash. One of the best ways to help pick the right sorbent is to see what they look like when you’re done with them. If it looks like the sorbent is being used in a high traffic area, you need a sorbent that is durable. Too much sorbent for the application - choose a medium or lightweight pad. Not enough sorbent, consider a heavyweight pad to increase performance. Brady/SCP even offers “green” sorbents to help with your green initiatives to help the environment and save costs. 4 WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine 2009 Whether you’re protecting your employees or your equipment, SPC products are your “go to” sorbents. You can depend on our sorbents to keep work areas clean and safe from virtually any spill, drip, leak or greasy build up. WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine Issue One Hawk-Wesco advertorial B.indd 1 5 9/4/09 14:49:25 Elster Bridges Solutions for Public Power Evolution in the primary and secondary metering markets The metering industry is experiencing a renaissance that reflects the rapidly evolving market place. Replacement of single phase residential meters with more functionality, primarily communications capabilities, began brewing as early as 2004. Clearly now, utilities want metering with advanced functionality as well as two-way communications. Over the past few years, utility customers began transitioning to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems and smart metering. Therefore, the market for standalone single phase residential meters continues to decline, from 4.5 million meters annually to 1 million units in 2008. In addition, there are an ever-growing number of used meters in good condition that are being removed for AMI projects that have entered the secondary market. Elster, with electric, water, and gas metering products and solutions, will continue to listen and respond to market challenges and needs. With the downward trend of noncommunicating single phase meters, Elster is excited to offer two solutions to this changing market segment. The electromechanical single phase meter has been the work horse for the metering industry for over 100 years. The combination of a declining market, rising costs of raw materials, and the need to better utilize the large number of stand alone single phase meters being removed from service, has caused Elster to address the situation. Given this list of circumstances, Elster would like to introduce a single phase standalone “green” meter. Elster’s solutions for the secondary market is the certified AB1G single phase meter. Elster’s solution for the secondary market is the certified AB1G single phase meter. Elster will use a pre-qualified meter chassis and new parts in offering a new warranted meter that fully complies with ANSI and other metering standards. We will replace the rotor, bearings, disc, and name plate with new Elster parts. Think of this approach as restoring a vintage automobile, where the body will be used, but the engine, transmission, and other critical parts will be replaced. The AB1G meter will be available as a Class 200, Form 2S, standard clock 6 WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine 2009 dial 13 8/9 RR register and we will have the option to supply either a glass or polycarbonate cover. Elster will also support current OEM module installation. To meet Elster’s existing quality standards, Elster will calibrate and test AB1G meters and we will offer the same warranty, manufacturing quality controls, calibration standards, and calibration reports that are normally supplied with our products. Elster will continue to support customer-specific serial numbers as in the past. Elster prides itself both in the quality of its products supplied and in being a good steward of the environment. Recycling good electromechanical meters not only fulfills our responsibility and commitment to the environment but also meets the needs of the new secondary meter market. Elster solutions for bridging to the future Many of our customers have stated that they intend at some point to install AMI communicating meters and systems but have not determined the specifics for the business case or have budget to proceed. Elster has an exciting suite of products to offer customers who face this dilemma. We can provide to the customer a REX2-EA™, single phase or urban network meter that has communications technology installed, but can be used as a non-communicating meter. When the customer decides that the time is right for a systems deployment, they only have to install the collectors and the MAS communications server and AMI functionality can be realized. There is no need for the meters that have been installed to be revisited, therefore, eliminating the need for costly visits back to the field locations. Moreover, the customer can use this approach to do customers in Texas and Louisiana. Entergy Corporation, with annual revenues of nearly $13 billion an 14,700a “test employees, is a increasing major integrated energy company engaged i drive” of the AMI system. Carhartt, a Michigan-based manufacturer of premium workwear, offers a full line of FR workwear products that will meet the needs of any electrical utility worker on the job during any season. Carhartt also offers three knit styles for women, specifically designed to fit the female form. Provided that care instructions are followed, all Carhartt knits are inherently flame-resistant and will remain flame-resistant for the life of the garment. Carhartt FR workwear serves electricians and workers in the utility, oil, gas and petrochemical fields who are at risk of exposure to electric arc and flash fires. With warmer months approaching, Carhartt launched an FR knit program last February. Carhartt’s FR knit garments are not only comfortable and breathable, but provide the user with HRC 2 level protection at 9.8 Cal/CM² in interlock T-shirts, and 18.5 Cal/CM² with sweatshirts. The Carhartt FR knit program bridges the gap for comfortable and durable FR apparel, new and loyal Carhartt consumers who are now required to wear FR can find their favorite styles from the Carhartt core line available in FR styles. Carhartt currently offers three styles of long-sleeve knit tops and one style zip-front sweatshirt. The knit longsleeve line includes a T-shirt, a Henley, and a mock turtleneck – all 6.5-ounce knit blend of 55 percent modacrylic and 45 percent cotton. The FR Hooded Zip-Front Sweatshirt is a 10-ounce knit blend of 55 percent modacrylic and 45 percent cotton. All Carhartt knit options come in a variety of sizes and colors with clearly marked HRC labels. 12 WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine 2009 Crescent Sets are the Sets that Meet the Specs Cooper Tools’ most popular Crescent tool set (CTK170MP) provides all the tools needed for most industrial applications, including diagonal cutters, an adjustable wrench, and tongue and groove pliers. WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine Issue One 13 Improve reliability and safety with low cost maintenance! The first polymer housed metal oxide varistor (MOV) surge arresters were introduced more than 20 years ago. The evolution to polymer housed MOV arresters brought two major improvements to surge protection over the older porcelain housed silicon carbide technology – improved surge protection and safety. Gapless MOV technology is a steady state technology that does not require a large series of internal gaps, unlike silicon carbide technology. With the elimination of gaps, and the superior electrical turn on characteristics, MOV arresters are able to limit surges to lower levels and provide significantly better protection for equipment and insulators. For example, a typical 10kV silicon carbide arrester limited a 10,000 amp surge to 65kV where as a typical MOV arrester limits the same surge to 41kV. Based on the ANSI application guide, silicon carbide arresters provide 46% protective margin versus 132% for MOV arresters. Nearly three times better protection! The vast majority of the porcelain housed distribution arresters used were not designed with a pressure relief or fault withstand capability. Consequently, when porcelain arresters reach their end of life, the available fault current at their location may be great enough to cause the housing to fragment, and the resultant pressure can cause pieces to propel in all directions. Porcelain housed substation arrester were designed with pressure relief capability, however the aging of the components can cause fragmentation under high fault currents. Polymer housed arresters, both distribution and substation, have nonfragmenting housings and meet the latest requirements for fault withstand capability. Distribution arresters typically withstand 20,000 amps of fault current, and substation arresters up to 80,000 amps, with only the potential for polymer material expelling. Polymer housed arresters clearly provide a safer operating environment! These two features have now been taken for granted. Every new arrester installation has these benefits. What is forgotten is that every old porcelain arrester still out there provides less protection than is available today, and typically on the oldest equipment that needs better protection than new construction. During periods like today, when housing starts are at their lowest level in decades and the economy is in a recession, the tendency is to halt nearly all construction work. The proactive utility will use this time to accelerate preventative maintenance! Replacing old silicon carbide arresters with Polymer Housed MOV arresters is the most effective means of improving reliability and safety, affordably! NEMA has developed an information website to assist utilities with understanding this opportunity and how to identify old porcelain silicon carbide arresters at www. NEMAARESSTERS.com. “WHEN NATURE CALLS” Personal Lavatory Systems “WHEN NATURE CALLS” Personal Lavatory Systems “nature onjob thesite jobwhat site what do do? you The do? first The thought first thought WhenWhen “nature calls”calls” on the do you is is where the nearest bathroom is or what are my alternatives? In the event of failure, lights will stay ON for safety reasons. ON and OFF are stable regardless of ambient temperature change. Delayed turn OFF of 3-5 seconds reduces false switching from stray light or vehicles, and operation is consistent across the operating temperature range. Rugged and reliable DC operated relay provides chatter-free operation, and there is minimum power dissipation across the light sensor. The 5231 and 5237 turn ON at 1.5FC with a silicon photosensor, and are a superior choice for lower total life cycle costs. Speaking of costs, there are applications requiring a little more energy saving capability. The flexible 5737TM fits ordinary turn-lock sockets providing far greater energy savings. Acting like a photocontrol AND time switch, 5737TM turns ON at dusk, OFF at your selected time, ON at your selected time, and OFF at dawn. It even re-learns and resets itself after a power outage, so that no maintenance is ever needed! WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine Issue One 15 Don’t Bug Out! Working outdoors in the heat, rain and other elements is difficult enough without constantly having to swat at annoying insects. With another summer upon us, it’s important for outdoor workers to have an effective means to control and repel insects. To address these concerns about worker safety, CRC has a collection of related insecticide safety products. Minimize serious health risks by fending off harmful stinging and biting insects with CRC’s summer defense -- Wasp & Hornet Killer PLUS™, Bee Blast® and Insect Repellent. Be Smart, Stay Safe! CRC can help! CRC INSECT REPELLENT CRC BEE BLAST® WITH RESIDUAL WASP & HORNET KILLER instantly soaks harmful insects and their nest with a powerful 22ft. jet blast. It kills wasps, hornets, yellow jackets and bees on contact. This specially designed insecticide also kills with residual action as wasps and hornets return to the nest. 16 containing the active ingredient DEET (25%) repels mosquitoes, ticks and other pesky insects. OSHA recommends that all outdoor workers use repellent containing DEET for personal protection. Spraying exposed skin and clothes makes outdoor workers unattractive to feeding insects resulting in reduced exposure to Lyme disease and West Nile Virus. WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine 2009 CRC WASP & HORNET KILLER PLUS™ INSECTICIDE is a strong, fast acting formula that knocks down and kills wasps, hornets, fire ants, black widow spiders and scorpions on contact. Our trigger provides an accurate spray that will reach over 20ft. to drench harmful insects and their nests. It has a high dielectric strength of over 40,000 volts and the extension tube doubles as a locking mechanism to prevent inadvertent spray. Reconditioning: Cost Effective Solution for the Utility Industry Aging and outdated equipment directly jeopardizes a utility’s ability to safely and reliably deliver high quality power. Auditing existing infrastructure and replacing and refurbishing key system components, especially power breakers, are an essential part of maintaining a robust electrical delivery system. Eaton’s Class 1 Reconditioning for breakers helps to restore the integrity of electrical protection equipment to its required level of reliability. It extends breaker life, improves system reliability, and provides an opportunity to enhance system coordination. A world leader in breaker engineering and technology, Eaton uses the most advanced equipment and state-of-the-art testing standards to ensure that a breaker maintains its maximum capability. Eaton’s Class 1 Reconditioning method is an exclusive 6-point process that begins with a rigorous inspection and testing on all incoming breakers. After testing, the breaker is completely disassembled to ensure that any hidden cracks or defects are detected and repaired or replaced. Harsh cleaning methods can damage or even remove silver plating from surfaces and improper lubrication can result in mechanism and latch failures. Therefore, the critical next step is a careful cleaning of all parts and lubricating of bearings. Once the breaker is thoroughly cleaned and refurbished, it is reassembled according to OEM documentation, regardless of whether the original manufacturer is Eaton or another manufacturer. Finally, each breaker is tested to the manufacturer’s and ANSI/IEEE standards. As a follow up service, each breaker is entered into Eaton’s database, which provides instant, accessible history and maintenance information on the breaker. Before Eaton has five Aftermarket Centers of Excellence (ACE) in North America to perform its Class 1 Reconditioning. Each ACE strictly adheres to Eaton’s program of standards and quality processes, which means that customers with multiple sites will have all their breakers reconditioned in exactly the same manner. Safety, reliability, and power quality rely on all the components and equipment in an electrical delivery system performing at optimum capability. Class 1 Reconditioning of breakers is an essential step in safeguarding the integrity of your power system. After Eaton offers full support to all low voltage and medium voltage circuit breakers regardless of original manufacture. Eaton’s 6-Point Process 1. WESCO Utility Solutions Magazine Issue One 19 The BURNDY HIW716ENF ENFORCER™ – A Revolutionary Wrench ® What makes this wrench revolutionary? The HIW716ENF is the lightest, most ergonomic, precision machined impact wrench in its class with the highest output torque. How is this so? For the past 40 years hydraulic impact wrenches years have been made from cast aluminum because it was the most economical means of manufacturing. Today, however, with advancements in CNC machining and the availability of high quality aluminum billet, critical components such as the main body and handle, can be precisely machined in a cost effective manner, with the utmost focus on quality and performance. output torque of 515 ft-lbs will provide utilities and associated construction crews the most benefit whether doing standard maintenance on roadside poles, or reconductoring and reinsulating. The daily task of drilling holes and torquing down hardware just got a whole lot easier with the HIW716ENF ENFORCER™. The ability to meet the variety of flow rates always needs to be considered a factor when it comes to low pressure hydraulic systems. The HIW716ENF ENFORCER™ was designed to handle a wide range of flow rates from 4–12 GPM. In addition, the ENFORCER™ has a gear motor that is not affected by back pressure and will not rub against the housing causing premature wear and tear. It also has a pressure compensated flow control valve that allows excessive flow to by-pass back to the tank. So no matter how much fluid is being pushed through the system, the ENFORCER™ is protected by the by-pass valve and will run cooler, providing longer life. “Rattle-guns,” as these impact wrenches are known to be called, can produce significant vibration and fatigue to the hands of daily users. Weighing in at just under 6 lbs, the HIW716ENF was designed to be the lightest in its class. Couple this with a trigger design that doesn’t require full extension of the users hand to squeeze, even with lineman’s gloves, and you have a more ergonomically designed wrench that can help lessen carpal tunnel syndrome ailments.
