The program provides teens with hands-on summer learning experiences that promote leadership and responsibility. Participation is $110 per teen (ages 14 and 15), and includes training and T-shirts. Applications will be available starting March 11 at cityofhenderson.com and at all Henderson recreation centers. Completed applications must be submitted by April 18. The TNT program trains teens to become future recreation leaders and provide support to the city’s youth summer camps and programs. TNT affords teens the opportunity to gain leadership experience, enhance self-confidence and learn the importance of providing excellent customer service. Teens selected for the program are given summer assignments based on their interests, skills and availability. “The TNT program is unique because each teen applicant is given an interview, much as they would for an actual job,” said Mayor Andy Hafen. “The experience these teens gain throughout just one summer provides them with workrelated experience and instills the importance of being part of a team.” Teens’ TNT volunteer service hours may qualify for community service credit with the Clark County School District. Participants should contact their school guidance counselors in advance for details and to receive prior approval. For additional information, call 702-267-4100 or visit us at cityofhenderson.com. Does my pediatrician have an opening to see my child today? Can I wait until my pediatrician’s office opens tomorrow? Is my child sick enough for the emergency room where there are long waits, insurance issues, and a room full of sick people? With so many options and questions, how do you know when and where to take your child? Every parent who has had a sick child has asked the same questions. There are many resources when your child gets sick. Your pediatrician is your main source of help and first destination when your child becomes sick. Your pediatrician can answer all of your questions and treat most illnesses and problems that are presented to his or her practice. If you have questions about your child’s health, call your pediatrician. If your pediatrician is not available, you have the option of taking your child to an urgent care or the emergency room. An urgent care clinic is usually able to handle most, if not all, of the illnesses and problems that your pediatrician’s office can see. Fever, ear pain, cough, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, eye discharge and redness, vomiting, diarrhea, and pain when urinating are just some of the examples an urgent care clinic can see. Many urgent cares can also suture simple lacerations, see minor head injuries, treat asthma attacks, remove foreign bodies from the nose and ears, evaluate minor sprains, and splint injured extremities. In addition, an urgent care may have a laboratory to run basic tests and perform blood work. Some have an x-ray machine to check for fractures and do chest x-rays. Cheaper copays, shorter wait times than an emergency room, and quick turnaround times attract most parents to an urgent care. Good Night Pediatrics is an urgent care center open from 5pm-5am every night of the year, including holidays with pediatricians seeing newborns through 18-yearolds. Good Night Pediatrics accepts most insurances and your child can be seen in a shorter time than in an emergency room. Y Can I wait until my pediatrician’s office opens tomorrow? Parade at 10am Saturday, March 15 PARADE CARNIVAL FESTIVAL CAR SHOW LIVE ENTERTAINMENT • • Sometimes children can have more serious illnesses or problems and should be seen in the emergency room. These problems include severe asthma attacks and difficulty breathing, prolonged vomiting and diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, and removal of batteries that a child has placed in his nose, ear, or swallowed. If your child is under the age of 2 months and has a fever, then he should immediately be seen in the emergency room. Head injuries with loss of consciousness and complicated lacerations can be seen in the ER as well as any changes in mental status, seizures, or serious extremity injuries or burns. If you have questions or are unsure, call your pediatrician for advice on what to do and where to take your child if treatment is needed. If you believe your child’s life is in danger, call 911. Claudine A. Mendoza, M.D., FAAP, is a pediatrician at Good Night Pediatrics, an all-night urgent care just for kids (and teens) every night of the year from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. Henderson Events Plaza 200 WATER STREET IN THE WATER STREET DISTRICT For Information HendersonLive.com | (702) 267-2171 cityofhenderson 2014 Official Event Charity Subject to change or cancellation without prior notice. It’s true. Instead of always changing what’s on the left side of the ‘dot’, soon you will have more choices on the right side of the dot as well. The “right side of the dot” is what’s called the Top Level Domain (TLD). One the most intuitive new domain extensions is .DIRECTORY. Imagine if you needed to find a dentist or a handyman. Wouldn’t it make perfect sense to just type into your browser www.Handyman.Directory or www.Dentist.Directory? Makes sense to me. In addition to the donations, Manheim employees volunteered many hours at their local Ronald McDonald Houses last year. In 2013, Manheim Nevada held its first fundraiser for RMHC of Greater Las Vegas. A 2006 Dodge Viper sold for $45,000, with $15,000 being donated to RMHC of Greater Las Vegas to help fulfill its mission to provide temporary housing for families who travel to Las Vegas to receive critical medical treatment for their children. The facility serves a high percentage of patients with heart defects from the children’s hospital. “It was incredibly exciting to use the auction process to donate to a proven charity like RMHC,” said Cliff Anderson, general manager of Manheim Nevada. “We wanted to leverage a great car and give a portion of the proceeds to charity.” “The true success of the charity auction was a direct result of Cliff ’s involvement with the local community and Manheim Nevada employees rallying around the cause,” RMHC Executive Director Alyson McCarthy said, noting that the donation will cover the Nevada Viper: Left to right: Alyson McCarthy, RMHC Executive Director, Neal Martino, HR Manager at Manheim Nevada, and Christine Fernandez, volunteer manager at Manheim Nevada. Literacy Through Public Service By Dr. Ray Huntington any parents work hard to find ways to teach their children to be good citizens and caring people, but with a little planning, you can also foster your child’s interest in reading at the same time. If you volunteer as a family or are looking for opportunities to help worthwhile organizations in your community, here are a few ideas that may benefit your child. M Read in a sibling’s classroom. If you have an elementary school student and a preschooler, talk with your preschooler’s teacher about having your older child read to his or her little brother’s or sister’s class. This is a great chance for both children to feel special and an opportunity for your older student to see how much younger children enjoy being read to. …continued on page 26 Bike Valet available. Your child might be surprised to know how many children in the United States and around the world do not have access to books. Organizations like First Book (www. firstbook.org), a nonprofit that strives to provide books to schools and programs for children in low-income families, works in hundreds of communities across the U.S. You and your child can reach out to a First Book Advisory Board near you to find out how you can help. For other ideas, check with your local library. Share your books. Your child could get involved with BookCrossing (www.bookcrossing.com), a worldwide book sharing program. This program is a fun way for your child to celebrate literature by sharing and tracking books he or she no longer needs. Talk with your school or local library, too, for other ideas on how your family can share books you no longer want with organizations in need (or volunteer with those same organizations). Start a book drive. There are many great local and national organizations that strive to add to libraries’ inventories, give books to organizations in need (homeless shelters or nursing homes, for example) and get books into the hands of children. Check with schools and libraries in your area, and also check out organizations near you for ideas on how to start or get involved in a book drive. BooksEnds in California (www.bookends.org), Chicago Book Drive (www.chicagobookdrive.com) and Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour in Las Vegas are all great examples. Volunteer at the library. One of the best ways for students to serve their communities while gaining valuable exposure to books and literature is to volunteer at the library. Your public library likely has many opportunities for young students to get involved, such as read-aloud programs, children’s story times and other programs, special projects, shelf and display organizing, and materials sorting. Look throughout your school and town for opportunities to help others enjoy reading and encourage your student to get involved. The more you can incorporate …continued on page 27 26 ParentsGuide of Las Vegas March 2014 …continued from page 26 reading into your child’s daily life—both by having him or her read and fostering reading in your community—the better. Of course, while these are great activities, there is no substitute for frequent reading. If your child is struggling or could use targeted help, call Huntington. We can develop a customized learning program to help your child become a stronger reader, which will help him or her learn to enjoy this wonderful pastime. Dr. Raymond J.
