During this special time for babies, we'll learn new nursery
rhymes, finger-plays, bouncy-lap songs, interact with puppets, sing,
read a book, play baby games, and dance! Join us for this wonderful
opportunity to network and share with other parents and caregivers.
Why Read to Babies?
It's never too early to begin reading to a child. Babies' brains
grow rapidly. Reading to babies right from birth (or even during
pregnancy) stimulates their minds, develops language skills and lays
a foundation for later reading success. Babies who are read to also
discover that books are fun, become good listeners, understand
their world better, and experience beautiful art in picture books.
They grow into children who love to read when they experience the
warmth and pleasure of cuddling with parents and listening to
nursery rhymes and stories.

Music Powers the Brain
Simply singing with a child connects neural pathways, and increases
the ability to retain information. In other words, it builds memory. Music
builds a strong sense of rhythm, which leads to a better ability to understand and produce language. Singing develops spatial reasoning, which allows children to recognize patterns and later helps in problem‐solving.
Songs are rich in vocabulary and by nature build phonological awareness.
Music Influences Us
You can use music to influence children in positive ways. Using music, you can change a mood, stimulate creativity, and direct energy toward
movement or stillness.
Music Connects Us
Because music is a language, it can bring together a diverse group
of people, and by simply singing together, give them a shared experience.
You don’t need to know what the words mean to understand the intention
of a song.
Music Comforts Us
Repeating the same songs give children security, and memories
that can be called on to comfort for a lifetime. When caregivers sing with
their children, they are calmed and comforted as well.

Bouncy-Lap Songs
These are great songs to sing while bouncing your child on your lap
or cradled in your arms. Put your child on your lap, facing you and bounce
them along. With repetition, they will begin to anticipate the dip, kiss or
tickle at the end!

* You can substitute the letter "B" for the first letter in your child's name. For
example, Mark it with a "M," and put it in the oven for Mary and me!
