that has clothed our souls ever since
Egypt?
By the time you read this Bulletin
article you will be busy preparing for
the q':lebration of Passover, or at least
thinking about it. I always think of
April as a time of rebirth and new
beginnings, both for our ancestors who
escaped the bondage of slavery, and
for us as well. The trees take on their
greenery once again, while the grass
turns from winter dull to a bright ver­
dant green, and the flowers begin to
bloom outside my doorstep.
But it is also the time we think about
changes here at Temple. The
Nominating Committee has presented
the new slate of officers to the Board
and awaits your approval at our May
Congregational Meeting. It is an excit­
ing, excellent slate with new people
who bring new energy, enthusiasm and
ideas. I lo<;,k forward to working with
each of the new Board Members and
the opportunities to share their input
and ideas as we prepare to begin a new
fiscal year at Temple. But there are
also people who will be leaving the
Temple Board and will be greatly
missed. Each of them has made some
wonderful contributions to Temple in
their role on the Board. I will miss

their wisdom, insight, and contributions.
You already know that Carole
Goldberg will be leaving Temple B'nai
Or. As she prepares to move on to
accept a great career advancement as
Executive Director of Congregation Beth
Israel in West Hartford, Connecticut, we
can only wish her the best. During her
tenure at Temple we have grown to love
her warmth, compassion and caring, her
welcoming presence to our congregants
as they come into the office, her hugs,
and the M&M's she dispenses so well!
We have been blessed to h<!.ve her with
us. She has been both a good leader and
a good teacher, and has touched many
lives. For us it will be a loss, but for her
it is a wonderful opportunity. So I hope
each of you will join your Temple Board
and Professional Staff as we celebrate
how blessed we have been to have
Carole as our Temple Administrator, and
honor her at the Oneg Shabbat on May
29. The change we face will be difficult
for us as a congregation, for me
personally, and, I am sure, for Carole as
well. But each of us come to certain
turning points in our lives where we

must seize the moment, and look forward to taking the opportunities and challenges
that face us. So although the parting is a loss for us, it is a window of opportunity
that Carole cannot afford to pass up. If you take but a moment to reflect, you will
know what I mean, and think of this as a wonderfully positive situation for her, and
not as a negative for us! The Search Committee is already actively at work seeking
out a candidate who will serve as Carole's replacement. Although nobody can fill
her shoes the same way she does, we will seek out the best fit.
Another loss this Temple will have is the music of Vivian Gibilisco, as well as the
joy, energy, and enthusiasm that she brings to the Religious School and to her role as
Junior Youth Group Advisor. As she and her family prepare for their move to
Chicago, we can only wish all of them the very best.
The Granite Marketing Committee has started work so that we can get on with
Phase II of the Courtyard next spring, after the excess granite has been sold.
So as you watch the rebirth of the trees and the flowers and ponder the changes
facing our congregation, remember, also, the opportunities that unfold before us.
Seize the opportunity to make the best of situations that we do not always like, and,
to quote one of our past presidents, "to tum lemons into lemonade"! May each of
you have a joyous Passover. Hag samaech.

Passover is the holiday celebrating the liberation of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage. The
holiday is also known as the feast of unleavened bread, "Chag Hamatzot" and "Z'man Charutanu," Season
of our Freedom.
Before Passover begins, every Jewish home is thoroughly cleaned to assure that no chametz (leaven) is
found in the home during the holiday.
"It is a mitzvah to abstain from eating leaven (Chametz) during the entire seven days of
Pesach. As the Torah states, 'You shall eat nothing leavened . . . ' (Exodus 12:20). Among
Reform Jews, abstaining from leaven may take many forms
from not eating those foods
which obviously contain leaven, such as bread or cake, to the more stringent avoidance and
examination of all ingredients in a particular foodstuff. By consciously making a choice to
abstain during the whole week of Pesach, one is constantly aware of the festival and one's
identity as a Jew."

Being a Reform Jew means making an informed choice.
What is Chametz?
The special dietary laws of Passover are based on the rule that during the seven days of Passover, a Jew
must not eat, own, or derive any benefit from chametz or . 'or. Chametz means "fermented" and s'or
means "that which causes fermentation." The term chametz refers to products made of naturally or
artificially fermented wheat, rye, barley, oats, or spelt. The term s 'or refers to yeast and yeast-like
products which cause or accelerate the fermentation of these grains. NOTE, that it is fermented grain
products which are forbidden and not all food which has been fermented. It is permissible to drink wine
which is made of fermented grapes.
Forbidden products on Passover include:
o Regular flour as it would be more subject to fermentation than the
. matzah meal, which, since it has
already been baked, has a much lower moisture content.
o Beer and whiskey made from fermented grain.
o Vinegar made from grain.
o Most prepared products from a supermarket, like salad dressing, pickles, mayonnaise which are usually
made with grain vinegar, or sauces which may be thickened with flour.
