New railway station
for Sa Pobla
The railway operator Serveis
Ferroviaris de Mallorca
(SFM) is to build a new
railway station in Sa Pobla,
the regional government
having approved a €600,000
investment to relocate the
station to a position by the
ring road some 200m south
of the current one. The
reason for the move is to
improve traffic circulation
as at present the railway line
crosses the ring road. Work
on the new station will start
later this year and be finished
next year. It is work that had
been anticipated and that
had been called for some
years ago, but a decision had
then been delayed because
of uncertainties surrounding
the planned rail extension to
Alcúdia, which was scrapped
due to the failure of Alcúdia
town hall and the then
regional administration to
come to an agreement as to
its route. The new station will
not involve any change to the
existing railway line.
Budget for Playa de
Muro boulevard
Muro town hall has
allocated €400,000 from an
investment budget totalling
€2.1m to the creation of a
new pedestrianized boulevard
in Playa de Muro. The town
hall had announced its wish
to establish this boulevard a
while ago and the investment
from the current budget
would be used to develop the
first phase of the boulevard.
This would be between the
municipal offices opposite the
Playa de Muro hotel and the
Calle Julia, the road between
the Alcudi-Mar hotel and the
chemists. The boulevard does,
though, require investment
from the tourism ministry
as well, and this has yet to
be approved. Opposition
parties at the town hall voted
against the plan, saying
that the boulevard will do
nothing to tackle the issue
of tourism seasonality in the
resort. The opposition also
argued that the town hall was
giving priority to Playa de
Muro at the expense of Muro
town, an accusation that is
hard to justify given that
the total investment budget
includes projects for the town
and also given the fact that
businesses in the resort have
repeatedly called for there to
be investment, of which there
has been relatively little over
the past few years.
Son Bosc back on
the agenda?
It’s been a while since we
heard anything about it, but
the proposed golf course
on the Son Bosc finca by
Albufera may be coming
back on the agenda. Muro
town hall has included the
golf course in its current
tourism plans and wants its
development to be declared as
being in the “general interest”
of Mallorca. This requires
a decision by the Council
of Mallorca, and it has just
withdrawn this general
interest status from the plan
for the Son Saletes golf course
(mainly in Sencelles but also
in Binissalem). Son Saletes is
a “rustic” finca but, as such,
it isn’t as environmentally
sensitive as Son Bosc, so
the Council’s decision may
not be good news for Muro
town hall. The withdrawal
of Son Saletes’s general
interest status comes only a
few months after the death
of the main promoter of the
golf course, Ventura Rubí,
who was also a leading figure
in the Partido Popular in
Sencelles.
Waterparks in the
north
There is of course a longestablished waterpark in the
north of the island, namely
Hidropark, but there are
to be other waterparks this
summer; all of them in the
sea. Playa de Muro’s sea
waterpark has already been
agreed by the town hall
and the Costas Authority
and is to be anchored 160
metres off the shore by the
Alcúdia Park hotel. The
company which is installing
the Muro waterpark - Glide
Sports - is also going to
operate waterparks in Can
Picafort, Puerto Alcúdia
and Puerto Pollensa. Those
in Can Picafort and Puerto
Pollensa will be closer to
the shore than the Playa de
Muro waterpark. The sea is
particularly shallow in that
part of the bay of Alcúdia;
hence why it has to be further
out. Access will be by rowing
boat, swimming or any other
means except motor boat. The
cost of the Muro waterpark is
eight euros, and payment has
to be made at a kiosk on the
beach.
Not everyone is happy about
the waterpark plan for Puerto
Pollensa, opposition parties
at the town hall saying that
there is a lack of consensus as
to the “model” for Tamarells
beach. In other words, they
are criticising the mayor and
his administration for not
having consulted over the
waterpark and the creation of
a massage point on the beach.
There again, the opposition
parties are always levelling
this criticism at the mayor.
Facilities for
the disabled on
Albercutx beach
Part of the beach by
the Anglada Camarasa
promenade in Puerto Pollensa
is to be reserved for people
with disabilities. Facilities
will include an amphibious
chair. Welcome though this
is, rather less welcome is
the news that the European
Environmental Agency listed
T A L K
Albercutx as one of only
two beaches in Mallorca
that did not meet its quality
expectations in 2013. The
other beach was Magalluf’s.
IslandFit coming to
Bellevue
There is further evidence of
Puerto Alcúdia’s growing
reputation as a sports tourism
destination and it will be in
the shape of a whole load
of fitness fanatics who will
once more be descending on
Bellevue from 19 June to 22
June for IslandFit, organised
by the Fitness Alliance.
Bellevue was the venue for
IslandFit last year as well.
I’ve had lots of positive

Fiestas not far away
The up-and-down weather
recently has led some of us
to wonder when summer
will truly be starting, but
you know it is starting when
the fiestas get going. By the
time that the next issue of
“Talk of the North” comes
out, the first of the fiestas in
the north will be underway.
It is Sant Joan in Muro town.
Apart from celebrating
John the Baptist, the fiesta
also celebrates the real start
of summer and the end of
spring.
Round and about
This weekend (7/8 June),
there are two fairs happening
not so far away. One is
the Sant Joan craft and
agricultural fair in Son
Servera and the other is the
herbs fair in Selva. Coming
up in Alcúdia - at the
Auditorium on Saturday, 14
June - is a concert by Jaime
Anglada. Palma-born, he
is a well-known name in
Spanish rock music. He will
be performing his new work,
“Temposinfónico”. Price is
€12 or €10 in advance. The
concert starts at 9pm. This
Saturday (7 June) at 9pm,
there is the rather oddly...

Esra North Presents the
Annual Flower & Craft Show
Once again the Cloisters in Pollensa provided
an ideal backdrop to the English Speaking
Residents Association (ESRA) Annual Craft
and Flower Show. Members from across the
island were joined by a number of tourists to
view this year’s show. Indeed, the Southwest
District brought some 51 members by coach.
The number of exhibits was down on last
year, but the quality on display shone through
presenting the judges with a difficult task to
find the winners.
This year there was some fine jams, cakes
and relishes competing for the top prize in
addition to the flower displays, crafts and
photographs taken by members.
Janet de Vries and her hard working team
from ESRA North with help from other
Districts provided seamless organization, and
the friendly competition from the various
ESRA Districts was ever present. Some of the
regular faces were missing, but there were also
many new exhibitors, including a new section
for ‘Decorated Roof Tile’.
North Mallorca Lions in Motion
Members of Calvia Lions have now held two
meetings in Pollensa in an effort to establish a
new Lions Club in the northern part of
the island in the form of a branch of
Calvia Lions covering the areas in and
around Pollensa and Alcudia.
The president of Calvia Lions Ronald
Hawes told Talk of the North that he is
“extremely pleased” with the initial response
from the local residents and wishes to
encourage further interest from anyone who
might be interested in joining as founder
members of the new club. The next two
meetings have been set for Monday 2nd June
Images and text courtesy of Howard Mullen
When the judging started, exhibitors left
and a strange silence fell on the cloisters.
Eventually, the competitors returned to seek
the judges’ stickers, resulting in the occasional
whoops of delight, or sad face.
After the marks were tallied, ESRA President,
Michael Booker, with Pat Tubman, Janet
de Vries, and ESRA Vice President David
Whitney made the presentations, and there
were lots of new faces among the recipients.
Well-done ESRA North for organizing such
a successful event. Sometimes events like
this can be taken for granted. One tourist,
leaving for lunch was heard to say, “If living in
Mallorca is like this, I want to be part of it!”
at 19.30 and Monday 16th June 19.30 both are
planned at The Yacht Club in Puerto Pollensa.
The objective of these meetings is to seek and
identify persons male and/or female (age
not important) who would be willing to
give some of their time in formulating
a structure of the new Lions Club and
commence the organization of fund
raising events in the northern part of
the island. A number of local residents
have already expressed an interest but a few
more people would always be welcome. If
you are interested in joining the Lions in the
North, please contact Calvia Lions President,
Ronald Hawes by email ronaldmhawes@

titled Piano de Pedra Festival
at Pollensa’s Sant Domingo
cloister (“pedra” meaning
stone). It will feature, among
others, the Pollensa music
band, the Xeremiers Orats
pipers and choirs. Price is €5.
And on 14 June there is the
similarly oddly titled “Festival
Hippie” at the cloister from
8pm. It is another choral
performance. Elsewhere,
there is an exhibition of
works by the Pollensa painter
Joan Bennàssar at Sa Pobla’s
Can Planes Museum of
Contemporary Art. Times
are 10am to 2pm, Tuesdays to
Sundays until 27 July.
Yacht club in crisis
Puerto Pollensa’s yacht
club, already faced with the
“crisis” brought about by
the enormous rise in the
annual fee it is obliged to
pay (which it is challenging),
faces further crisis because
of concerns over its
management. Briton Alan
Ponte is leading a motion
of censure in the current
president, Pedro Siquier,
which could result in him
replacing Sr. Siquier. This
has all arisen because of calls
for the club’s board to resign
when the annual accounts
and budgets couldn’t be
approved because of alleged
irregularities. Mr. Ponte has
said that he would seek an
early election so that members
can choose a new president.

spending 7 months in French barrels.
TOTN Tasting Notes: Muac! has a lovely
sweet strawberry nose with a touch of
rosemary underneath. On the palate the
ripeness continues alongside a charming
tarry character. The tannins are gentle
and very light in structure, with a wellbalanced acidity. We particularly like the
label. Designed by Mallorquin cartoonist
and writer, Pere Joan, the label depicts
a couple kissing, demonstrating a big

Bistro del Jardin
Bistró del Jardín is perfect for

When decorating a boat,
it’s easy to let function
take precedence over style,
perhaps not so much interior
decorating but more ‘finding
a place for everything and
keeping everything in its
place’.
Functional and practical it
may be, but there is no reason
why it can’t be stylish too.
Choosing a colour scheme is
a very simple way of sprucing
up a boat interior. Clearly
space is limited so you must
be very mindful of anything
frivolous and non-essential.
Happily, there are items
available that can make your
boat feel like a real home.
So, to style up your boat,
consider scatter cushions,
wallart and nautical lamps for
example. Keep crockery and
tableware unbreakable, acrylic
is great. It has the appearance
of glass but it’s sturdy and
dishwasher safe too.
In Alcudia Mar, the Son Fe
Tienda store offers their own
label ‘Maid in Spain’ a line of
home textiles that are perfect
for your boat, or your house.
They also offer interiors
advice in your home, boat or
in the store.

A Perfect Outfit

Spanish Lesson
for a wed
It’s wedding season,
which means many
of us are heading
to the shops for the
perfect wedding
outfit. Black and

on trend this
summer, consider
Coco Chanel’s
very own words:
“Women think of
all colours, except
the absence of

Their beauty is

Indeed, monochrome is your

Living in Spain?
The only book you need.
I avoid going to the supermarket with child/ren, at all cost. I avoid it like I avoid anyone
who had gastro this side of Christmas. Perhaps one at a time I can try and be that Mum
who lets her child count out the tomatoes into the bag. Together, forget it.
When I have no choice, I try to entertain them with strategically planned snacks and
their own little shopping lists, with not much luck: Son One jumps in and out of the
trolley as if it is a game of hopscotch, touching every piece of fruit and vegetable
in sight and “accidentally” dropping them on the floor. Little Guy keeps screaming: “Let me out!!” and
when that doesn’t work, he tries: “Stop hitting me Mummy!!” which does work. I am a stressed out mess,
desperately trying to throw at least some of what’s on the shopping list into my trolley while containing the
beasts I have bred.
Arriving at the till, I narrowly miss grabbing Little Guy’s hand before he snatches a bag of m&m’s which he
drops on the floor and I then run over with my trolley. Yellow, blue and green chocolate covered peanuts
happily bounce all over the floor, to the delight of my screeching boys. I almost cry. The checkout lady looks
at me: “no passa res”. Possibly the kindest thing anyone has ever said to me. The older woman behind me says:
“que guapos, quina energia!”, and I love her for the positive spin on what is a stressful situation. Later when I
try to wrangle them into the car, she walks past asking: “Necessites ajuda?” (Do you need help?) I’m not sure
if she means with the bags or with my parenting skills. Supermarkets and kids, a perilous combination.

Ask Aunty Marga ...
The Sport
Dear Aunty Marga,
The cyclists do bring in a lot to the economy
but why do quite a large amount of them
not ride their bikes considerately? I have
many examples if needed.
Ron, Puerto Pollensa
of the North
Ron, guapo, I know they can be a tad
frustrating but no pasa nada. What’s the
rush? Just sit back and let them lead the way.
Have you ever tried riding one of these very
expensive bikes along a pot-holed road?
Sadly, they do need to move out of the way of
them. Don’t forget they are very vulnerable,
they might not think so, but they are. I think a
little anger management course and some
daily breathing exercises are the best
way to deal with cyclists. Suerte!

We call our run over to Cala
San Vicente, the Full Monty
because it has everything:
mountain and woodland,
together with coastal and country road. We veer off into the
Siller development from the yellow aeroplane roundabout
in Puerto Pollensa and follow a mountain track a short way
up and over towards Cala San Vicente (this is also a popular
walk). The views at the top are stunning and continue to
impress as we make our way into Cala San Vicente along
the winding coastal road enjoying views of aquamarine sea
and attractive coves. Instead of running down to the bar
overlooking the beach, we divert and make our way into a
wood which allow streaks of golden sunlight to fall at our
feet. It is a beautiful place to run, the only downside is that
the woodland path is not long enough. This little wood leads
us to a long country road lined with fields of sheep and fig
trees. We then join a track along the main road, which takes
us back to the starting point. Overall, a scenic and diverse
11.5k route that serves as a very good workout.

Continuing from last week’s plank challenge, the Bicycle Kick
is an amazing exercise that works the deep abdominals.
1. Lie on your back on a mat or carpet with your knees
bent, and feet flat on the floor.
3. Bring your right elbow towards your left knee extending
the left leg as you do so, then bring your left elbow over
to your right knee in a twisting, bicycle pedal motion.
4. Keep the exercise slow and controlled. Breathing
naturally throughout. As a slightly easier alternative,
don’t fully extend the opposite leg to the elbow.
Aim to complete 3 sets of 20/40 repetitions in total. Try to
combine these with the plank: 30 sec plank followed by 20

Hello friends! This is a full
day-trip navigating away from
the Port of Pollensa. All you
need are towels, snorkels, sun
protection, food and water.
Mother Nature provides
the rest: beautiful waters,
mountains, wildlife, blue
skies...

WE CARE FOR YOUR YACHTS
to be on our side,
leave Pollença bay.
After Formentor
Island, then the small
cove called Cala en
Feliú, Cala Murta
and Cala Engossalba,
we keep going on
the north side of the
bay, aiming for Cap
Formentor.
This is the most
northern point of
Mallorca. It is truly
spectacular and
one of the most
photographed views
on the island. You can travel
to the lighthouse at the end of
the point by car (this can be
a challenge in itself), but to
visit by sea gives a unique view
of the lighthouse, the huge
cliffs and the deep blue depths.
Thousands of years of wind and
waves have left their mark on
the rocks.
Then we turn to port (we
change our course left), and
keep going up to the next
cove, Cala Figuera. This is the
perfect beach to spend the rest
of the day. Have lunch, swim,
snorkel, jump from the cliffs,
make a siesta, and if you stay
until late, on the way back you
can enjoy the sunset. Savour
over a nice glass of bubbly and
enjoy a romantic moment as
the sun goes down. Captain

Sandra Olarte, a coach at the club, tells TOTN, “The most important thing is to teach our
girls the necessary discipline and respect among peers and coaches.” Indeed the girls can
train for up to 9 hours per week and a weekly hour of ballet is compulsory. “The girls
dedicate a lot of time to bodywork and elasticity.” But of course the training depends on age
and ability.

Club Spotlight: Gimnasia Ritmica L’Alcudia
Our club spotlight this week is on Gimnasia Ritmica L’Alcudia.
Last weekend, the club participated in two competitions:
on the Saturday the girls received three gold, two silvers
and three bronze medals at the Trofeo por la Paz in Sueca,
Valencia. At the IV Trofeo de Escuelas de Gimnasia Rítmica
de l’Alcudia, the whole club participated to win 14 gold,
nine silver and 12 bronze medals. The girls performed both
individually and in sets.
Children can start the sport at a very young age, the youngest
girls are three years old, and continue up to age 16. It is a girl’sonly discipline and the club coaches the students according to
level and category, covering all styles and apparatus: free hand,
rope, ball, hoop, clubs and ribbon.
This year, the club celebrated one of its student’s becoming a
Regional Champion and two others made 7th and 8th place in
the freestyle class in the same tournament. Clearly the strict
training regime pays off.

A Ray of Sunshine
The storm clouds have parted
and Real Mallorca’s prospects
of staying in the second division
have improved enormously. As
reported last time just as we
went to press, Luis Carreras
was sacked after just 12 games
in charge. Out of a possible 36
points on offer during his
time in charge the team
picked up a miserly
10. Drastic action
was necessary as the
team was spiralling
not just of the league,
but also almost out of
existence. Youth team
coach, Javier Olaizola,
was hastily promoted to
head coach and B-team coach,
Pep Alomar took up the reins
as his assistant. Olaizola is a
former player and captain of
the club and spent eight seasons
as first choice right back. He
is renowned for his attacking
play making long foraging
runs from deep positions. His
partner in crime was Miguel
Soller who was an even more
adventurous left back. Known
as El Vasco because of his
Basque heritage, he continued
to live on the island and this
season was appointed youth
team coach.
The first thing he promised on
taking up his new appointment
was that the team would play
with aggression and intensity.
He, very astutely, recalled three
veterans: Israeli goalkeeper
Dudu Aouate, central defender
‘Popeye’ Nunes and Palmaborn midfielder Pep Luis
Marti. They may all be
long in the tooth with a
combined age of over 100
but they brought a calmness
and composure to the team.
El Vasco’s first game in charge
was away at Girona and the
home side took the lead before
half time. Previously the
islanders would have crumbled
but Tomer Hemed equalized in
the second half to bring a vital
point back. A crucial home
fixture last Saturday against
Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) was
up next. There has always been
a serious inter-island rivalry
between the two sides and an
old fashioned blood-and -guts
football match ensued with the
referee prepared to let the play
flow. 15,000 fans roared on
Mallorca who were in control
throughout and second half
goals from Emilio N´Sue
and Hemed (again)
earned a crucial
victory. As Olaizola
entered the post
match conference
the hard nosed
journalists
even
applauded him. He
shook hands with each
and every one of us and
his enthusiasm and sense of
humour shone.
This victory moved Mallorca
to seventh from bottom, the
final four are relegated. A
point in the final away game
on Saturday at Cordoba
should be enough to ensure
survival. Mathematicians have
calculated that Real Mallorca
have an 86.42% chance of
avoiding relegation but the
points difference is very slight.
Real Mallorca have 50 points, as
do Mirandes. RM Castilla have
49 and then Girona, Alaves and
Jaen all have 48. Only Hercules
with 45 are already doomed.
Injuries to Nunes and N´Sue
during the game against Las
Palmas are likely to rule them
both out of the Cordoba clash
and midfield enforcer Thomas
is suspended after picking
up a fifth yellow card against
Las Palmas. Olaizola revealed
in the press conference that
N´Sue suffered injury in the
first half but insisted at half
time that he would carry on.
Speaking with N´Sue after the
game it was obvious that the
new coach had inspired him to
play on and score the opening
goal. Real Mallorca fans
throughout the world will be
glued to radios, computers and
mobile phones on Saturday to
follow events at Cordoba in
what could be the most crucial
game in the club’s history.
