Congratulations VCE 2015
Galen Catholic College Newsletter Wednesday 16th December 2015 Issue 21 Congratulations VCE 2015 Galen Catholic College would like to congratulate all Year 12 students across the 2015 VCE and VCAL on their results. We are proud of their success at VCE with 106 students receiving an ATAR and a further 10 Galen students achieving their Senior VCAL. We are very pleased to announce that the co-Duxes for 2015 are Fergus Samon and Ryley Pasquali each with an ATAR of 94.65. Both boys are intending to study Science at the University of Melbourne. We are equally pleased to report that so many students have achieved to the best of their ability and have given themselves the best possible opportunity to move onto their preferred next steps whether that be employment, further study or a Gap year. On the basis of these results, we are confident that the vast majority of students who have applied for tertiary courses will receive offers for their preferred options. We are also very proud of the achievements of a large number of Year 11 students who have studied a Year 12 subject in 2015 with exceptional results. Galen Principal, Bernard Neal, said that the staff and community are proud of the achievements of the 2015 cohort. “This was our smallest Year 12 cohort in recent years but the breadth of opportunities available to our students through VCE, VCAL and VET has ensured that the senior students at Galen have been able to tailor courses to suit their particular needs and interests. Today’s results will enable them now to capitalize on having accessed that range of opportunities. “We wish all the students well on the next stage of their journey – Galen will always be here to help and advise them as needed, and to celebrate their future successes with them. We hope that they will continue to be as proud of their Galen heritage as we are of them.” Mr Neal also said, “We are equally proud of all students who put in their best effort regardless of their subject scores and ATARs and regardless of whether they completed their VCE or VCAL.” We wish the Class of 2015 every success in their life’s journey. As I circulated amongst the young students as they sat in the Galen Auditorium before the day got properly under way, they expressed a mixture of anticipation, nervousness and expectation. But they were unanimous in saying how excited they were to be here. Throughout the day, we had trails of students exploring their soon-to-be new school environment – they discovered the Science labs, the library, the downball courts, the front office, the art rooms, the Hospitality centre and Food Tech kitchen, the Italian and Indonesian rooms, the design technology workshops, the Music centre, the Media centre, the stadium and the vast grounds. This may have been the official Orientation Day, but it was actually one in a series of several days over the past 6 months that have helped the Grade 6 students become familiar with the layout and the people here at Galen. For these young people, coming to Galen represents a major milestone in their life’s journey. They leave the safe cocoon of the primary school they have known for the past 7 years and into the environment that will lead them through their teenage years and prepare them for their entry into adulthood. The transition into secondary school is a rite of passage. The careful way in which each individual is welcomed into our community, the excitement and life-skill of learning how to adjust to new surroundings and the resilience this helps to build, and the comfort that comes right from the start knowing they have an adult assigned to their care in the form their homeroom teacher – all these things were evident in the experiences of the children last Tuesday. Join us at Wangaratta Library every Friday in December from 4pm for festive craft and delicious treats. FREE event for all ages. As they students left for home at the end of the day, it was obvious that this day was a real highlight for them. New friendships had started, new subjects and new skills were experienced for the first time, and one more step was completed in becoming the next generation of students who will be Proud to be Galen. Unveiled as part of its masterplan early last year, Galen’s $7 million first stage involves the junior and senior schools swapping locations. Principal Bernard Neal said stage one had been split into three parts, with the $400,000 stage 1a, which began last week, focused on relocating and refurbishing seven portable classrooms which will be used in the transition to the change. The $3.1 million stage 1b involves development of the new senior school on the Park Crescent side of the campus, while 1c, worth $3.5 million will see creation of the new junior school fronting Phillipson Street. Works will be funded through savings and borrowings, and the school is hopeful of attracting Catholic Capital Grants funding for the new junior school. Mr Neal said work on the new senior school would go to tender at the end of February, with work expected to start in mid-April. “In 2016, the students will be in those transition rooms, which will be relocated into a position where we can use them, while the building is under way,” Mr Neal said. New construction works for the refurbishment of Galen’s Main Office. The Year 8 portables have now been removed from their original location so that work can commence on the new Senior School next year. www.galen.vic.edu.au | 7 Applications Open for Immersion Program 2016 Santa Teresa Mission, Central Australia To submit an application, students need to go to the Student Links tab on the SIMON homepage and answer the application questions before Friday 12th February 2016 (Term 1, Week 2). Students will be interviewed early in Term 1 before the final 8 students are selected to attend the Immersion Program. WHO? 8 Year 10 & 11 students will attend (must be 16 at the time of the trip) along with 3 staff members. WHERE? Santa Teresa (Ltyentye Apurte) is an Aboriginal Community 80kms east of Alice Springs. WHEN? August 20th – 27th 2016 WHY? Students from Galen go on the invitation of the Marist Brothers, who run the Santa Teresa primary school, as well as skill based programs for local youth. Students are able to experience life in an Aboriginal community first hand. The experience enables students to break down stereotypes and barriers, works towards reconciliation and reinforces service, social justice and tolerance towards others.
