Rafael is the second largest governmentowned defense company in Israel, and in 2010 sales amounted to $1.8 billion with a backlog of orders worth $3.5 billion. Qualitative Edge RAFAEL was founded in 1948 as Israel’s National R&D Defense Laboratory within the Ministry of Defense, and focused initially on missile technology. Over the years, RAFAEL has developed systems for every branch of the IDF. These systems are based on control of a wide range of technologies and extensive familiarity with the operative needs of the IDF. RAFAEL’s products strengthen the IDF’s qualitative edge, and most systems have been battlefield proven. In 2002, RAFAEL was incorporated as a government-owned company maintaining its technological state-of-the-art capabilities through extensive R&D programs. RAFAEL comprises three divisions, which as a whole provide its customers with integrated systems and technologies for air, land, sea and aerospace defense solutions. Rafael is operating as three divisions: Missiles and NCW Division: This division designs, develops and manufactures a variety of guided missile systems, including air-toair, air-to-surface, anti-tank missiles and air defense systems, as well as electro-optic systems for target acquisition, laser designation and reconnaissance purposes and C4I systems for net-centric warfare. The division’s key products include: David’s Sling - Air defense system for medium range joint project in cooperation with Raytheon, Iron Dome - an effective and innovative mobile defense solution for countering short and medium range rockets. The Python and Derby air-to-air missiles, the Spyder air defense system, the Barak anti-missile naval air defense system, the Popeye and Spice air-to-surface missile systems, the Spike family of electrooptic multi-purpose missile systems, as well as the Litening and TopLite navigation and targeting pods, the RecceLite real-time reconnaissance pod and the SpotLite electro-optic small arms detection system. Ordnance and Protection Division: This division develops and produces systems for land combat forces and underwater defense including: active, reactive and passive protection systems for land combat vehicles, remote controlled weapon stations, naval and land acoustic systems, anti-torpedo warfare, as well as laser and highpowered, microwave-based, energy-directed weapons. In addition, the division also specializes in homeland security applications. The division’s key products include: the Trophy active protection system, advanced armor for the American Bradley and AAV7 AFVs, the Samson family of remote controlled weapon stations, the Carpet mine breaching and counter-IED system, as well as the Scutter, reactive expendable acoustic torpedo decoy. In addition, the division also produces and supplies the Protector naval unmanned surface vehicle. Manor - Advanced Defense Technologies Division: This division develops rocket motors and space propulsion systems, warheads and pyrotechnic subsystems, stand-off breaching systems and naval decoys. The division’s key products include: propulsion systems that are a part of the Israeli OFEQ and EROS satellites, as well as the French Myriade and Proteus satellites and the Hetz anti-ballistic missile. In addition, the Manor Division develops and supplies the Simon door breaching monition as well as the Matador family of shoulderlaunched breaching products, especially suited to urban warfare. RDC (RAFAEL Development Corporation) RAFAEL takes advantage of its own sophisticated technologies in order to develop civilian and commercial applications through RDC, a joint venture with Elron Electronic Industries. RDC has invested in several start-ups including Given Imaging, publicly traded on NASDAQ, which has developed a unique disposable video-imaging capsule, and Medingo Ltd., catering to the needs of insulin-dependent diabetic patients.
