The spaciousness, the newness, the temperate climate, the acoustics and excellent sound system – all were elements for deep thankfulness throughout the day. Baccalaureate began with a prelude by Heather Deal. The staff and seniors marched in to “Trumpet Time” by the Crusader Band. After the welcome by Andrew Boersma and invocation by Daniel Paul, the Crusader Choir directed by Kevin Waller sang “Give Thanks.” Kindergarten graduates Jimmy Burma and Owan Watson were presented their diplomas by Superintendent Jason Watson and teacher Megan Hall. Seniors Kaylee Goeringer and Shanna Moreland poked fun at their classmates, giving special remembrances of each, during the Senior Reflections. Israel Appel and DJ Beckwith continued with light-hearted tributes to each of the staff. The power point presentation of the senior class reviewed their friendships and memories made over the years. A spiritual time of congregational worship was led by the SBA Worship Team directed by Craig and Lori Brockel. The special speaker, Ken Shay from Pierre, SD, told the seniors that basic training is over – they are going out to battle now. Using 1 Peter 1:13, Shay had three goals he encouraged the seniors to adopt. First, upon leaving SBA and their homes, they need to find a church home where truth is a Person, Jesus. Second, they need to realize love is the great- During a brief stoppage of the rain, the seniors expressed their joy at graduating. est virtue and the power of love keeps one fighting. Finally he encouraged them to find Christian fellowship in order to stay strong. He ended with a moving poem Hakuna Matata theme of Junior/Senior Banquet A rainbow of colors from the senior girls’ dresses was displayed as the class posed before the banquet. “Hakuna Matata” means “No Worries.” These words from the movie The Lion King were chosen as the theme for the 2013 Junior/Senior Banquet held April 19. However, the J/S theme was based on Matthew 6:25-34. Ethan Hammer said, “I really loved the way the juniors incorporated the theme of Hakuna Matata. It reminded me that we don’t have to worry because God is in control.” While SBA grounds were snow- covered, there were no worries at the View in Pierre, SD, where there was bare ground, some green grass, and temperatures warm enough for the traditional outside pictures. The Grand March began at 6. After all were seated, junior Elissa Stiegelmeier welcomed the group and gave thanks for the meal. Everyone helped themselves to delicious prime rib, mashed potatoes, salad, corn, and rolls. Dessert was attractive cupcakes in four flavors made by Becky Stiegelmeier and Lisa Deal. David Paul said, “The meal was most amazing. The prime rib was slow cooked to perfection . . . The many flavors of delicate cupcakes were rich and very delicious.” Allison Deal introduced the speaker Rocky Moxley from Selby, SD. He continued the theme by encouraging the students to not worry. Moxley (con’t page 7 Hakuna) about the calm before the storm. “I need a Savior who is the calm before the storm.” Jamie McClain gave the benediction after which the recession- al “I Sing the Mighty Power of God” was played by the Crusader Band. After lunch, prepared by the (con’t page 5 Grads) TN3 test scores high by Jason Watson This was the second year that SBA administered the Terra Nova 3 (TN3) test to all students. You may recall that the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) switched to the TN3 test last year after using the Stanford Achievement Test for a number of years. This year SBA’s mean scale scores exceeded the national norm group in every subject area in grades 9-12. Since our elementary classes are so small (five or fewer students in each grade K through 8) the comparisons there are not very accurate since the performance of one student can greatly skew the overall score (for better or for worse). However, the elementary and middle school students did very well this year, too, particularly in reading and language arts. (con’t page 7 TN3) KEITH & KRISTYN GETTY in CONCERT! With the SBA choir! Page 2 News APRIL/JUNE 2013 Clean-a-thon nets much trash, donations by Cheryl McClain Clean-a-thon was postponed due to snow April 24. Even though the weather was cold on May 1st, it was decided to get the cleaning done since the end of the year was soon coming. Many students and staff were disappointed not to have the picnic at the Miller Park. Instead, morning classes were held and the “picnic lunch” was enjoyed in the dining hall. Students and staff cleaned ditches in the afternoon. There were some spots that couldn’t be cleaned due to standing water. The students brought back “ditch items” that were voted on to find Although the day was cloudy and cold, some students and staff found joy in the Clean-a-thon. Joseph Lopez found the most valuable item which was an unopened package with a tail light for a vehicle. Mr. Burma found a useful tire wrench and Mr. Pedersen found a candy wrapper with SBA colors. Approximately 20 miles of ditches are cleaned in the fall and spring for a total of 40 miles. The total income for Clean-a-thon 2013 was $19,191 compared to last year’s total of $16,400. Cheryl McClain, coordinator, expressed appreciation for all who generously gave to Clean-athon. Harkins celebrate 50 years in Brazil by Jason Burma Skip Harkins graduated from Sunshine Bible Academy in 1956 and by 1963 he was serving Christ as a missionary in Brazil. Through the years his ways of ministering may have changed but not his desire for the people of Brazil to know Jesus Christ as their Savior. For the first few decades Skip and Betty had a riverboat ministry and they would travel up and down the river spreading God’s Word to the different tribes that used the river for travel and sus- tenance. As time passed, Skip and Betty spent more time teaching and growing the young believers’ faith. They also used friendship evangelism to advance the cause of Christ among their community, helping out with the everyday things in life. This was an effective tool in building trust among the community. As they advanced in age, it got harder for them to travel, but they have still continued their ministry as they have worked with the local believers in the knowledge and in the translation of God’s Word into A great day to be out and running - these youngsters enjoy a race during the Pre-K activities. Sun shines on Track and Bible by Heidi Seaman A beautiful day, additional room (in the new activity center), and 101 students all contributed to make Track and Bible Day, May 3, a great event. Fifty-two families were represented -- that number included SBA students and families. Eighteen of those participated in the pre-K activities which were designed by Natasha Smith (a home school mom). Melinda Schroeder and Ethan Hammer helped out with that group. All activities were based on “the fruit of the spirit.” Games included fruit hopscotch, pin the fruit on the tree, fruit toss, watermelon roll, banana balance, and a coloring activity where kids were able to take home a basket with ‘fruit’ Fifth graders Jace Burma and Ross Engle earned superior ratings at the April 27 music contest in Miller. They joined other 5-8 grade students in the competition. Kevin Waller, SBA music director, is their teacher. Burma played a baritone and Engle played a trumpet. Coordinator Heidi Seaman said, “It was a wonderful day all around. It seemed very busy from a coordinator’s perspective, but I believe it ran very smoothly. I was very thrilled that Dalton Hinman (whom we have been praying for) came with his family. I was also exceptionally pleased with the help from staff, students, moms, and a few from the community! I think everyone had a very good time.” Plan Today, Give Now or Later Elementary students earn superior at music contest Enjoying the fellowship of the tea are (from left) Lindsey Hettich, Kaylee Goeringer, Shanna Moreland, Megan Hall, Terra Burley, Jessica Clowdis and April Teel. Check out the new Giving site on the website: www.sunshinebible.org Senior girls were honored at the annual Senior Girls’ Tea May 2. Kristina Watson hosted the event. Mothers of seniors and other ladies on campus were invited to join the girls. A variety of delicious hors d’oeuvres were served. Holly Friesen, sister of Kristina, spoke to the girls about purity, using two paper hearts as an example. If the hearts are glued together, they do not separate cleanly when pulled apart. Friesen related this to sexual relationships outside of marriage when the relationship ends. Both parties leave part of themselves with their former partner. Friesen is a medical missionary to Ukraine and is involved in prolife ministry there. The Ashley Hall recital has been rescheduled for Tuesday, August 27. Pierre area winners are Jimmy Burma, Owan Watson, Jakki Burma, Dylan Hass, Cassidy Watson, Tierney Connell, Travis Hass, Shariah Brockel and Ross Engle. Elementary active in learning, contests by Sherry Van Zee Every two to three weeks the K-3rd grades and the 4th-6th grades meet to tabulate their reading pages and receive their rewards by moving from one station to another on the SD Reading Challenge chart. Ann Price from Ag in the Classroom came and shared about different types of soil in SD, the water cycle, and branding of cattle. In April Holly Freisen, a medical missionary, visited and shared about the culture of Ukraine. Donna Smith from Voice of the Martyrs shared a video about Gladys Aylward, a missionary to China. Also in April Darrelynn Tutt presented a lesson on poetry for the classes. The students participated in the contests with the SD Read- ing Council. All students read and recorded pages for the Reading Challenge. The middle grades also sent some Young Authors and Young Illustrators entries. SBA had thirteen winners with the local council: kindergartners Jimmy Burma, Owan Watson; 3rd grade Dylan Hass, Jakki Burma; 4th grade Cassidy Watson; 5th grade Shariah Brockel; 6th grade Travis Hass. In the Young Authors competition Ross Engle, Shariah Brockel and Tierney Connell won. Young Illustrators’ winners were Cassidy Watson, Shariah Brockel and Travis Hass. The winning entries were sent to the State Reading Council where SBA had two winners – Shariah Brockel and Travis Hass. Opinion Page 3 From our administrator Jason Watson I do not know where the time went, but the 2012-13 school year is over. On Sunday, May 19, we graduated the twenty-one young men and women of the Sunshine Bible Academy Class of 2013, students from families in South Dakota as well as Colorado, Nebraska, New York, Japan and South Korea. Those twenty-one graduates will spread out across the country next year to continue their studies, attending schools including the University of MassachusettsAmherst, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and George Washington University on the east coast, Moody Bible Institute, Association Free Lutheran Bible School, South Dakota State University, Dakota State University, Dordt College and Grace University in the Midwest, and Sassoon Academy and Washington Institute of Technology on the west coast. Please keep them in your prayers. The end of a school year often brings other transitions, too, and this year will be no different. Peggy Stacey and Sherry Van Zee are retiring after serving very capably as high school English and upper elementary teacher respectively. Matt DeRenzo did a great job as a resident supervisor in the boys’ dorm this year, but he is getting married this summer and will not be returning to SBA in the fall. And, Gaylen and Benita Engle are also moving on to new opportunities in Rapid City to be closer to family. We appreciate the great jobs they did, too, as Head of Maintenance and Head Cook respectively. Lastly, Matt Van Zee will not be coaching the girl’s basketball team next year, as he pursues college courses toward a career in education. Please pray for each of these members of the Sunshine family as they begin the next phase of their lives, and pray that the Lord will direct just the right people to SBA to fill the thus-far-unfilled positions these individuals have vacated. Around this time last year I wrote in this space about the addition of an art instructor to our faculty and a new partnership with Central Christian College of Kansas that would allow SBA juniors and seniors to earn college credit while taking courses at SBA. Terra Burley did a great job teaching art to all of the elementary and middle school students and to twenty high school students enrolled in Art I. As for the partnership with CCCK, ten students took one or more of the six dual enrollment courses that were offered, earning a combined total of fifty-seven college credits. We are excited to expand our dual enrollment offerings next year with two or three more courses. There are a couple of other exciting additions coming next year, too. SBA has joined the American Welding Society to become an AWS Level 1 certifying site through the SENSE Training and Testing Program. SBA’s welding program is under the supervision of Industrial Arts teacher Todd Seaman. We will also be offering two sections of an Intro to Agriculture course as part of starting an FFA chapter at SBA. SBA will be the first private school in South Dakota to offer FFA. This new effort will be led by Dean of Students Andrew Boersma. Thank you for your support of Sunshine Bible Academy. Please continue to keep the school in your prayers throughout the summer. We are praying and trusting that the Lord will direct many new students to SBA next year. If you know anyone who might be interested in attending SBA, please send them our way! APRIL/JUNE 2013 SBA Foundation David Paul, Chairman Hi, got time to chat? Webster’s dictionary defines the word meaningful as “having a purpose: significant , <a ~ life>”. Nine years ago come August, I was participating in some work projects at Sunshine, removing one of the original three apartment buildings and cleaning up the remains of one that was destroyed by fire. Three new house trailers had been purchased and were being hooked up. I remember a car parking at one of the new homes. A woman got out of this car which was loaded to the roof with possessions. A second car also brought a person or two and was filled to the roof. This was moving day for Peggy Stacey. She had landed a job at SBA. No! There is more to it than that. Peggy Stacey had been recently widowed. Her children were raised. Brookings, SD, was her home and a good position at a local bank was her occupation. Why was Peggy selling her home, quitting her job and moving to SBA? As Peggy settled into her new home, we exchanged a short visit now and again. What I learned from this quiet and reserved woman was this: “I have come here because I want to do something more ‘meaningful’ with my life than the 8 to 5 job I had at the bank.” And the past nine years have been just that: “meaningful.” There are no 8 to 5 jobs at Sunshine. Peggy’s life became filled with students needing to be taught “God’s Truth for Today’s Youth” through her teaching English, drama, looking after the library plus editing this Crusader. SBA needed Peggy and Peggy needed Sunshine. And God blessed this match. Age is not a factor in searching to do something “meaningful” with our lives. Hopefully each new graduate you see here in the Crusader will do just that. As for the rest of us, if what we are doing and supporting is in obedience to God’s call, it is well worth doing or supporting! Thank you, Peggy Stacey, for your years of defining “meaningful.” from Steve Frusher Director of the Livestock Program How swiftly and unexpectedly life can change! What started out as a father-son Saturday morning fishing trip turned into a nightmare of doctors, hospitals and medical decisions. Several weeks ago, our daughter Steph called us from Chicago to tell us that our son Vance and his three sons had been in a traumatic automobile accident. All she knew was that the doctor was working on an open fracture on Vance’s leg, but she could not find out any news about the three boys. After prayer and several emotional roller-coaster phone calls, we found out that the boys were alive and that the two youngest were being air-lifted to the University of Chicago Hospital to be close to pediatric surgeons. We immediately headed to Chicago and arrived 12 hours later. By this time, Vance had had surgery to fix his fractured leg. He also had three broken ribs, a possible punctured lung, a broken nose, and a shoulder injury. The three boys all ended up with broken bones, but all three are healing properly and rapidly. After a week in Chicago, we headed home and stopped at daughter Jean’s in Harrisburg, SD. Preparing to go back to Selby the next morning, my wife Margaret fell coming down the steps and broke her ankle. The next stop was the emergency room and surgery. We thank all of you for your prayers in behalf of Vance and his family and for Margaret. They will all heal in God’s timing. We praise God for sparing the lives of our son and grandsons. As we prayed all the way to Chicago, we could sense your prayers also. Philippians 4:6-7 says that we are to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” We needed our hearts and minds guarded with God’s peace as we went through that experience in For your convenience the SBA website using your credit card. Chicago and with Margaret in Sioux Falls. In the midst of all of this, God allowed us to sell our house in Selby and find a house in Rapid City. God’s faithfulness and timing does surpass all comprehension. Thanks to all who are participating in the cattle program in spite of dry weather, lack of feed, and poor water availability. What a blessing that God has provided needed moisture during the middle of May throughout much of South Dakota. At the time of this article, all the cow-calf pairs have been placed. Thank you for your sacrifice and obedience to God’s leading. It was good to connect with many of you at SBA graduation and to listen to the inspiring speakers. The new facility was well utilized and helpful. All of these bring glory to God. Thanks Peggy Stacey for your help with the articles. You will be missed on your retirement. You may now make contributions to SBA through “Almost counts in horseshoes...but not in budgets! We are almost to the end of our fiscal year, and right now we will almost balance the budget. Please consider making a gift before June 30 to help us finish the year in the black.” The Crusader is published four times a year by Sunshine Bible Academy. It is mailed bulk rate from Madison, SD. Letters to the editor are welcome but will be printed as space allows and must be signed. News concerning alumni is welcome. To have your name removed from the mailing list, please contact the school via phone or email. The Crusader is mailed free of charge to the parents of students, alumni, financial supporters, and friends of the school. Various students in the English classes and staff write for the Crusader. The processional was the traditional “Pomp & Circumstance” played by the Crusader Band. During the welcome by Jason Watson, attendees who had graduated from the old Quonset were recognized, followed by those who graduated in the “old” gym. Past and present members of the school board, the advisory board and staff were recognized. Campus Pastor Jim Hofman gave the invocation. The Crusader Choir then spread throughout the room and sang a moving “There Is a Redeemer.” Kevin Waller presented the Kea Ufen Dearing Scholarship to senior Brady Brockel. The E. Stanley Morgan Scholarship was awarded to Daniel Pedersen. DJ Beckwith received the Citizenship Award and Brady Brockel received the highest award given to a graduating senior, the Crusader Award. Jason Burma presented the Hall of Fame Award to Gaylen and Laela Van Zee. Brady Brockel gave the Salutatory Address followed by Daniel Pedersen giving the Valedictory Address. The senior class set the tone for the featured speaker by singing “For All the Saints.” Gracia Burnham spoke to the seniors, encouraging them to think about “What is the plan for reaching the world?” She encouraged them in whatever area they chose to pursue God’s plan for them. Since her ordeal in the Philippine jungle as a captive of the Taliban, she has come to realize God’s ways aren’t her ways. She stated that God took her strong husband Martin and left the weak Gracia to do His work. Four of her captors have become Christians and to that she said, “Wow! God did that.” She left the seniors with the thought that some day when their stories are told, they will also be able to say, “God did that.” Superintendent Watson presented the seniors with their diplomas and the ceremony closed with the Crusader Choir singing “The Lord Bless You and Keep You,” the benediction by Kent LaDue, and the recessional “Nun Danket” by the Crusader Band. SBA had twenty-five students receive such a score, four in the elementary school, and twenty-one in grades 7-12. Since not all schools completing the TN3 test take the Bible subtest, the results for the Bible section are reported differently than the other sections, with students earning ratings of Advanced, Proficient, Basic or Below Basic. Cast members Nathan Yost, Elissa Stiegelmeier, Heather Deal, Allison Deal, Emily Batiz, Ethan Hammer, Elisa Hahne, Joseph Lopez and Noah Appel step off the Army Hymn as members of the military were honored. Accompanists included Daniel Seaman, percussion, Music Director Kevin Waller, and Andrew Shumake on saxophone. Spring musical a celebration of America A standing ovation showed the audience’s appreciation for the spring musical “We the Peoplethe Musical.” The musical, presented April 26, was a celebration of America. Ten actors/singers played various everyday people who make up this great country. Favorite patriotic anthems were combined with uplifting compositions written for the musical to render a 90 minute tribute to remind the audience of America’s history. A committee of six – Allison Deal, Elissa Stiegelmeier, Elisa Hahne, Andrew Shumake, Ethan Hammer and Nathan Yost – formed the center of the story by discussing the Preamble to the Constitution and how to use it as a framework for a show. After each phrase was discussed, the lights shifted to various groups who portrayed that phrase. Most vignettes ended with music sung by the actors. During one musical number, the members of the audience who had served or are serving in a branch of the US military were recognized while their branch hymn was sung. This portion concluded with the singing of “Star Spangled Banner.” Student musicians Daniel Seaman and Andrew Shumake joined Music Director Kevin Waller to supply the accompaniment. Other actors included Heather Deal, Emily Batiz, Joseph Lopez and Noah Appel. The actors were assisted by the tech crew consisting of Mikeal Desta (sound), Melinda Schroeder (lights), Jessica Clowdis (prompt) and Shariah Brockel (music assistant). Waller directed the music portion; the drama was coached by Peggy Stacey and April Teel. A special thanks to Craig Brockel for assistance with the sound system. The play was written by Pat Cook and the music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur. Spring Concert encourages thankfulness Thankfulness – an attitude all Christians should cultivate. On the evening of May 10, the various musical numbers presented at the spring music concert reminded the audience of this attitude. The evening began with a musical by the elementary students “Down by the Creek Bank.” Through various skits and songs the children emphasized the many areas in which one should be thankful. The Handbell Ensemble presented “Rejoice Greatly” followed by the Crusader Band playing “Nun Danket,” “This Little Light of Mine,” and “Fortress Variants.” Superintendent Jason Watson joined the band (playing the trumpet) in a modern arrangement of “Amazing Grace.” The Men’s Ensemble continued the thankfulness theme with “Sing to the Lord” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” The Ladies’ Ensemble followed up with “God Pedersen honored at luncheon Senior Jessica Clowdis lights junior Tricia Wilken’s candle during the Junior/Senior Dedication. Seniors pass light of leadership to juniors The traditional Junior/Senior Dedication Ceremony was held May 9 in the chapel. Resident Director Matt DeRenzo challenged the juniors to assume the leadership position that the seniors are now vacating with their upcoming graduation. He used Peter-the Rock as his example from the Bible. The seniors each read a challenge to a junior student. This was followed by the seniors lighting a junior’s candle. Jason Watson challenged the seniors to consider this time as the beginning of the rest of their lives. He encouraged them to make careful decisions and shared with them ten rules for success based on the Bible. Daniel Pedersen was honored for his hard work throughout his high school years at the 23rd Annual Academic Excellence Banquet in Pierre May 23. Gov. Dennis Daugaard joined in celebrating other graduating seniors and encouraged them to grow their own roots in South Dakota. Hosted by the Associated School Boards of South Dakota and sponsored by the SD Community Foundation and Citibank, the banquet honored more than 200 students from the state’s public, private and tribal Student Council officers elected Senior Daniel Pedesen and Gov. The second number, “Goin’ to the Holy City” featured soloists Sarah Pedersen, Justin Ryu, Allison Deal and Elissa Stiegelmeier. This was followed by “We Praise You, O God” and “Hallelu.” The evening was climaxed by the choir spreading out into the new gym and prayerfully singing “There is a Redeemer.” Music Director Kevin Waller directed the concert and Craig Brockel accompanied most numbers. ever, they finished their trek to a campsite nestled in a deep ravine, with a small stream flowing down the middle of it.
