Boe, Faribault, Minnesota, United States of America Variety used for comparison: ‘Seward’ (Summer Wine) Summary: The branches of ‘ARTBOE401’ are more rigid than the branches of ‘Seward’ which are of medium stiffness. When the leaf blade is newly open during summer, the colour of the upper side is brown with light green veins and darker brown along the margin and at the apex for ‘ARTBOE401’ while the upper side is grey brown with light green tones and darker grey brown along the margin and at the apex for ‘Seward’. The colour of the upper side of the fully open leaf blade of ‘ARTBOE401’ is dark brown with shades of darker brown while the leaf blade of ‘Seward’ is dark green. The colour of the seed pod of ‘ARTBOE401’ is red pink whereas the seed pod of ‘Seward’ is light green with red pink tips and develops more red tones with age. Glossiness of the seed pod of ‘ARTBOE401’ is of medium intensity whereas the glossiness of the seed pod of ‘Seward’ is weak. Description: SHRUB: deciduous, upright growth habit, medium density of foliage, medium density of branches BRANCH: erect attitude, rigid stiffness, dark brown, medium density of secondary branches SECONDARY BRANCH: red brown, very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration LEAF: alternate arrangement along branches, ovate shape, acuminate apex, cordate base, dentate margin, strong degree of folding when newly open, medium to strong lobing UPPER SIDE OF LEAF BLADE: weak glossiness, medium prominence of midrib, brown (closest to RHS 176A-B) with light green (RHS N144A) veins and brown (RHS 166A) at margin and apex when newly open during summer, dark brown (RHS N200A) with shades of darker brown (RHS 200A) when fully open LOWER SIDE OF LEAF BLADE: medium prominence of midrib, weak to medium intensity of brown purple (RHS 184A) anthocyanin colouration of midrib, brown green (closest to RHS 147B-C) PETIOLE: present INFLORESCENCE: corymb type COROLLA: rotate form, inner side is white (RHS NN155B) with light blue pink (RHS 62D) blush, outer side is white (RHS NN155B) with light blue pink (RHS 62C) stripe along center of each petal SEED POD: red pink (lighter than RHS 43D), medium intensity of glossiness Origin and Breeding: ‘ARTBOE401’ was bred and developed by the breeder, Arthur Boe, of Faribault, Minnesota, USA. It originated from an open pollinated cross conducted in June 2000 between the Physocarpus opulifolius varieties ‘Monlo’ as the female parent and ‘Nugget’ as the male parent. ‘ARTBOE401’ was selected in 2003 for its plant growth habit, foliage colour, and foliage appearance. Asexual reproduction of ‘ARTBOE401’ by softwood cuttings was first conducted in July 2003 in Faribault, Minnesota, USA. Tests and Trials: The comparative trial of ‘ARTBOE401’ was conducted as an outdoor irrigated container trial during the summer of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 15 shrubs of the candidate variety and 8 shrubs of the reference variety. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 13.5 litre containers on June 14, 2013. The trial was arranged in rows with approximately 1 m spacing between shrubs. Observations and measurements were Plant Varieties Journal, January 2015, No. 94 APPLICATIONS UNDER EXAMINATION NINEBARK taken from 10 shrubs or parts of shrubs of each variety on June 20, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Wood, Spring Lake, Michigan, United States of America Variety used for comparison: ‘Little Devil’ Summary: The plants of ‘SMPOTW’ have branches with fewer fully developed secondary branches than the plants of ‘Little Devil’. The branches of ‘SMPOTW’ have longer internodes than the branches of ‘Little Devil’. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the secondary branches is weak to medium for ‘SMPOTW’ while anthocyanin colouration of the secondary branches of ‘Little Devil’ is medium to strong. The colour of the seed pod of ‘SMPOTW’ is brown green and develops red tones with age while the seed pod of ‘Little Devil’ is brown red. Wood, of Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. It originated from an open pollinated cross that occurred during the summer of 2006 between the Physocarpus opulifolius variety ‘Seward’ as the female parent and a plant known to be a sibling of the variety ‘Seward’ as the male parent. ‘SMPOTW’ was selected in 2008 for its plant growth habit, foliage colour, foliage size, good mildew resistance, flower bud colour, and production characteristics. Asexual reproduction of ‘SMPOTW’ by softwood cuttings was first conducted in July 2008 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. Tests and Trials: The comparative trial of ‘SMPOTW’ was conducted as an outdoor irrigated container trial during the summer of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 15 shrubs of the candidate variety and 8 shrubs of the reference variety. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 13.5 litre containers on June 17, 2013. The trial was arranged in rows with approximately 1 m spacing between shrubs. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 shrubs or parts of shrubs of each variety on July 2, 2014.
