The Amplemouse Box
Celebrating the 75th anniversary of Robert Mouseman Thompson and Ampleforth working together
IT WAS IN THE EARLY STAGES of the First World War that Robert Thompson first
met Fr Paul Nevill from Ampleforth. Robert and Fr Paul clearly understood each other
and what really mattered about that first meeting was that Fr Paul got a glimpse of the
furniture that Thompson had made for his own house in Kilburn, all modelled on
mediaeval oak patterns. Fr Paul immediately thought of the Library at Ampleforth College
and the rest, one could say, is history.
The latest collaboration is on a limited edition, keepsake box; The Amplemouse Box. An
ideal size for cufflinks, jewellery, watches or stationery, it is hand crafted in oak and bears
a marquetry Ampleforth crest and a carved, relief mouse. The suede lined box measures
261mm long x 196mm wide x 120mm deep and includes a lift out tray. The box is
available with a variety of suede linings including Ampleforth colours red and black. Initials
can also be inscribed on the front of the box at an extra charge.
Production will be limited to 250 and each box will be beautifully packaged, numbered
and certified by Fr Cuthbert Madden OSB, Abbot of Ampleforth, and Ian Thompson
Cartwright, Managing Director of Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd.
The Amplemouse Box will retail at £1,095 including VAT, excluding delivery. Sales of the
Amplemouse Box will help to support the Bruno Bursary Fund at Ampleforth College.
Students receiving Bruno’s bursary will be from a background most needing help and
support; vulnerable and disadvantaged young people whose lives could change forever
as a result of such a bursary at Ampleforth.
