INFORMACIÓN GENERAL
ELCOME to Aragon. Do you know where you are? You
are in the Iberian Peninsula’s northeast. Its territory
covers an area of more than 47,500 square kilometers
and is made up of the provinces of Huesca, Saragossa and Teruel.
Here, more than 1,200,000 inhabitants live. They are friendly,
noble and close. The best thing you can do is to get lost in this
natural land, full of life and flavor. It has a border of 136 km with
France, so you are in the central door to Europe from France and
Portugal.
W
It will take your breath away, but Aragon is a land that breathes
history. If you follow the thousand-year-old marks, you will
realize that, in this Community of contrasts, Christians, Jewish
and Muslims have lived together. Get ready because your
adventure starts.

ERUEL is a province that will surprise you. Not only does it
exist, but also insists in your visiting to discover it in depth.
In the capital, they combine the latest in architecture and
technology with their Mudejar gems with great skill, which have been
given the status of World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. The new face of
the Óvalo Walk has gone around the world; it has even been exhibited in
the MOMA of New York. In the Torico square, they embarked on a road
surface which lights up during the night. And this perfectly coexists with
the towers that will lead you around the city. On February 14th, you can
travel back to medieval times in order to relive the Lovers tragedy.
t
Without loosing that romanticism, in this province, there are wonders like
Albarracín and its surroundings. In the protected landscape of Rodeno’s
pine forests, the cave art is waiting for you since ten thousand years ago.
You can also follow the huge dinosaurs’ paw prints if you enter Territorio
Dinópolis. The Jiloca gets all dressed up year after year when its saffron
fields are in bloom. The Cid Campeador rode along these lands and his
trace is still alive. If you want to know how the flour was produced in the
mills, you can see it in Ojos Negros. Very close, you will learn how the salt
was produced in Las Salinas Reales (The Royal Saltmines), how the resin
industry worked in the opencast mine installations of the Menera
Mountain Range. Savor the Matarraña and be familiar with the secrets
kept by Alcañiz. Pay a visit to the River Martín’s Cultural Park, the
Peracense castle and the most beautiful villages of El Maestrazgo.

And break all the predictions when you sit at the table in the
province of Teruel. Ham, ham but with roast suckling lamb or
charcoal-grilled or tile-cooked little lam chops It is said that
you can use every part of the pig, and you will check it when
you try the spicy pork sausage, the highly seasoned pork
sausage and the black pudding. The marinade is famous,
which goes perfectly well with the little stew, with the
porridge or with a good consommé with hard boiled egg,
garlic and bread. Do not rule out the game, the poultry or a
good trout, the excellent olive oil from Bajo Aragon and the
delicious cheeses like the Tronchón or the Samper and
Calandra ones. And for dessert, the sun, the Calanda peach.
Captivating aroma and flavor. Afterwards, you will not want
to try other ones. As a coda to this, hand-made cookies, bun
made with lard, Mudejar plait, suggestive lover’s sigh or
torment’s little stones, soul flat cake, almond toffee or
cheese-flavored roll made with maize flavor. In order to drink
a toast, wines from Calaceite and Valderrobres. You see it.
Sincere cookery, with love and sweetness.

Óvalo Walk
In the Coalfields, let yourself be carried by the strength of an
old mine that is a museum nowadays. An unforgettable
experience, like the landscapes and the cute spots that you
are going to see. Follow its trail and leave your own one in
the ski slopes of Valdelinares y Javalambre. Enter all of a
sudden the Drum and the Bass Drum Route of Bajo Aragon. If
you come during Holy Week, you will become an enthusiast,
whether you want to or not, as, in this province, the passion
spreads. Break the hour, break the time, and break the silence.

HE city of Teruel will make you fall in love. In
order to get to know it, it is better that you travel
on foot along its spots and discover that its
settlers have been shaping it since the King Alfonso II decided
to organize the kingdom’s borders during the Reconquest.
Teruel is a Mudejar city but, nowadays, they dare to combine
with great skill its towers and churches with the latest in
architecture and technology. The new face of the Óvalo Walk
has gone around the world; it has even been exhibited in the
MOMA of New York and it is the ideal place to go for a walk,
aired and with wonderful views.
And this perfectly coexists with the towers that will lead you
around the city. The one of San Pedro is the oldest Mudejar
construction of Teruel, witness of every event that has
happened since 1238. On the other hand, the one of La
Merced, which dates from the second half of the XVIth
century. When entering the Cathedral, do not forget to
delight in seeing its amazing roof. There are two more towers.
It is said that the ones of San Martín and San Salvador were
built in record time by two Mudejar workers that competed
for the love of a girl called Zoraida. Whether it is reality or
legend, this gives Teruel a special air. It is the Lovers city,
Isabel and Diego, whose mausoleum receive thousands of
visits.

Teruel
The Great Holidays are in June, the ones of La Vaquilla del
Ángel, with the clubs and roped bulls as the major figures.
Locate yourself in the central Torico Square and imagine that
it is jam packed with people from Teruel, who put the scarf to
the torico (bull), yes, yes, to that located over a column, a
small specimen but a big monument to the bull. If you look
at the buildings, you can see that, in the first third of the
XXth century, they go for the modernist architecture. There
are more churches, spots, friendly people and an
incomparable ham. Teruel is much more. Discover it.

Q
O you want more magic and romanticism? Go to
Albarracín then. You will for sure have heard about the
existence of an enclave that seems to float over the River
Guadalquivir. A divine place in which, in both sides of its narrow and
irregular streets, the most beautiful palaces, temples and magic
hanging houses raise with and unthinkable harmony. A balcony with
views over the territory flanked by a wall that invites to give free rain
to your imagination. As you are about to fly, the best thing you can
do is to travel around every spot on foot and, if possible, leave your
heels at home.
D
Albarracín
Very close, in the protected landscape of Rodeno’s pine forests, the
cave art is waiting for you since ten thousand years ago, which will
make your walks unforgettable. If you feel like visiting more
museums, pay a visit to the Toy Museum in Albarracín or the
Transhumance Museum in Guadalaviar.
Toward the west, the mountain and shady lands that house the River Tajo
in its source, offer beautiful landscapes and routes perfectly suitable for
walking in the very heart of nature. Do not forget to pay a visit to the
waterfall and the natural-rock arch under which the waters of the Berro
Spring flow, and beautiful localities such as Orihuela del Tremedal, Frías
de Albarracín, Bronchales, Tramacastilla, Ródenas or Griegos.
From Teruel to Saragossa, the road goes up along the River Jiloca’s
valley. It is a good opportunity to realize how handymen were the
Romans when building bridges, such as the ones of Luco and
Calamocha. The Cid rode around these lands and you can still follow
his trace in localities such as Poyo del Cid. Nevertheless, if you let your
smell guide you, you will arrive at Monreal del Campo, beautiful when
its fields are in bloom. A museum goes over the life of this valued spice
that, as it seems, was already used by the Egyptians and the Romans.
Even tough they did not know the paella, they aromatized other stews
and wines and got dyers for fabrics and perfumes. Right there, look for
the Ojos, some suggestive wetlands where the subterranean waters
appear on the surface. Do not mistake them for Ojos Negros, which is
a nearby place formerly famous for its iron mines. Pay a visit to its
mining neighborhoods but also to the flour windmill, Salinas Reales
(The Royal Saltmines) and the viewpoints. You will leave with saffron,
flour and salt. But you need the finishing touch.
It is lifted up, in the Menera Mountain Range. It is the Peracense Castle,
a charming spot. Be careful as it merges into the landscape. And if you
want superb views, you will find them here, if you have a look out to see
the Gallocanta Lake. If you are lucky, thousands of cranes will have
arrived, which, year after year, come to their spring/autumn little house.

Q
ISTEN, I am not telling you to hear but in Escucha
(a village called listen in Spanish), a village from
the coalfields of Teruel, you will be able to put
yourself in the miner’s place. A deserted mine has turned into
a museum that will allow you to embark on a very special trip
toward the earth’s core. The coal, the lead, the gypsum and
the salt have always have been vital in this area. Nowadays,
they share the prominence with the tourist activity thanks to
the incredible landscapes. Alcaine, for instance, raises in the
River Martín’s narrow pass and, apart from a beautiful urban
area, it keeps cave paintings in the Marcro cave. But if you
are interested in archeology, you perfect destination is Aliaga
or, as the Arabs said, Crooked Valley. The River Guadalope
forms part of the mountains that narrow it with harmony.
Rough, uneven and grey rocks studded with green vegetation
and with the magic of the water. The nature’s imagination is
unbounded is this point. If you do not know where to start,
go to El Alto de Camarillas Viewpoint.
Already in the Teruel region, you can pay a visit to Cella,
Villarquemado, Orrios, Escorihuela or Galve, where you can
put yourself in the paleontologist’s place and follow the trace
of these old and huge settlers, the dinosaurs.

Dinópolis Legendark, Galve
To frame, a good photo in the surroundings of Montalbán. It
is mentioned in a passage of Mio Cid and it has an amazing
church, Santiago el Menor, Gothic-Mudejar style that dates
from the XIIth and XIVth centuries. It looks giant in
comparison with the rest of the houses. Just behind, the
remains of this old walled town’s castle. During the night, the
doors were closed and nobody could enter or go out until the
next morning. You will understand it better when you see any
of those doors, for example, the Jail’s Tower one.

EVELOP a passionate interest in the low lands of the Ebro’s
valley and Matarraña’s basin, until reaching Beceite’s
mountain passes. Develop a passionate interest in their
landscapes, its delicious olive oil and its emotional Holy Week. If you
want to see something unique, dare to go on an excursion along El
Parrissal, go deep slowly into Beceite’s narrow mountain passes and
then go down Els Ports gully, suitable for the general public, even the
children. Taste the freshness, the contact with the earth and the
tranquility. But if what you want are gullies, animals, plants and cave
paintings, you have an inescapable date with the River Martin’s
Cultural Park, between Montalbán and Albalate del Arzobispo. An
authentic work of art modeled by nature.
D
In La Fenellosa, over the rock, cave paintings, examples of the
schematic or eastern art (from the provinces of Alicante, Castellón,
Murcia and Valencia). The dinosaurs are waiting for you in Peñarroya
de Tastavins, a municipality where a specimen of Tastavinsaurius was
found, whose replica is exhibited in one of the Dinópolis’ delegations.
It is said that the good essences are served in small jars. This happens
in the Matarraña. You will be dazzled during day and nigh by its
medieval villages, where you will hear the Catalan, although they feel
Aragonese. The bridge of Valderrobles , its palaces, the castle and the
Gothic church, the paved streets and the special spots; the elegance
of Calaceite, its square with porticos, its church and other gems, the
hundreds of meters of arcades of La Fresneda, Beceite, Cretas,
Monroyo, Ráfales, Arens and masses of villages and proposals.
But if what you want is good art, the Gothic of Los Calatravos Castle,
in Alcañiz, and the passageways that come to life under the streets of
the second bigger municipality of Teruel. Alcañiz sounds of engine; the
motoring has its place in one of the Drum and the Bass Drum Route’s
places, where everything sounds with passion. Next to it, Híjar, La
Puebla de Híjar, Albalate del Arzobispo, Andorra, Urrea de Gaén,
Alcorisa, Samper de Calanda and Calanda. From this last one was the
brilliant Luis Buñuel. He went back to this place whenever he could.
The “Rompida de la Hora” is very famous; thousands of hands mark the
beginning of a pain’s roar that will last hours and days. In these
villages, they have been sounding since the previous day’ midnight. A
show that is signed by the inhabitants of Bajo Aragón, who are
passionate and friendly.

Q
o you know where does the name of this region
come from? From the Middle Ages, when a wide
part of this territory was within the jurisdiction of
the Military Order’s masters, who had conquered it.
Nowadays, it is a peaceful area with more than enough
attractions for the traveler. In its environs, you will be able to
observe the cattle grazing in the meadows. When you arrive
at Cantavieja, you should better leave your car and walk.
Disappear into the big rambling houses’ sturdy stone facades,
with their wooden eaves. The Main Square with porticos, the
Town Hall, arches, passageways and hanging houses, built as
by magic in such rough area.
D
You can gain access to the neighbor and walled Mirabel
though El Portal de las Monjas. It will take you a long time to
find all the details of its clay latticework framed by wood, the
convent that Felipe II founded, its palaces, Gothic windows
and forge details over the paved streets. Every spot has
something to show you, but keep some energy to experience
new emotions. You will find them in the courtyards made of
river pebbles and the Nublos Tower located in El Cid Little
Church, and in Villarluengo that, from its watchtower, seems
to be a postcard village.
Pay a visit to the River Pitarque’s source or to the sharp rocks
of “Organos de Montoro”, next to the Guadalupe meadow, it
is something that impresses when arriving or leaving this
land full of history.
And to recover energy, the best is a little swig wine with
cheese from Tronchón, the one that Don Quixote used to eat,
which is served as it is like semi-cured cheese or in oil with
herbs.

F you like the white sports get your skis and ski boots ready
to ski in Valdelinares and Javalambre If it does not go with
you, come closer to see the ski slopes and the wonderful
environment. From the precipitous mountains to the deep valleys,
Gúdar-Javalambre is waiting for you, with villages such as Alcalá de la
Selva, whose streets intertwine under the castle’s silhouette. By the
way, do you know how to distinguish Mora de Rubielos and Rubielos
de Mora? Mora is the capital of the region and everybody talks about
its Gothic castle, the collegiate church and the walls. Rubielos is one
of those monuments you have to turn around to look at. Its doorways,
walls, temples, houses and courtyards. Everything.
I
Come to this area during the summer to enjoy the Aragon Festivals
and also pay a visit to other nearby localities such as Mosqueruela,
Puertomingalvo, where you will eat good seafood, Linares de Mora or
Gúdar. And, at this point, turn to rest, immerse yourself in the peace
that “El Paraíso” offers you. Do not worry; you are neither death nor
dreaming. It is the name of the Manzanera Spa.
