St Joseph’s Is A Nut Aware School
Dear Parents and Guardians
Bush Dance in Queenstown
Yesterday our Prep/Gr 1 class and our Grade 2/3 class travelled to Queenstown to
join with other schools from the West Coast in the ‘Dance Event’. This event has
been on going for many years throughout Tasmania and comes to the West Coast
every two years. The children had a wonderful time showing the dances they had
learnt at school. We were really pleased with the way our children joined in with
the dances so enthusiastically while their behavior and manners were excellent
throughout their time away. Thanks to Miss Niaura and Mrs Stoessiger who
organised the outing and taught the children their dances.
Next Tuesday we will have an opportunity to watch the children perform their
dances at our school assembly. Our Grade 3/4 and Gr 5/6 classes will also be
showing off their dancing skills as they also perform bush dances they have
learnt with Mrs Stoessiger.
Whole School Assembly
Next Tuesday, 16 September, we will have a school assembly to show our
Dancing Skills and some of the songs we have been learning of late in music.
The assembly will commence at 11.30am in the MacKillop Hall.
For that day children may wear casual clothes with an Early Australian theme.
Clothes such as jeans and a shirt, possibly a bush hat and if your child has them
- boots would be great. There is no need to buy new clothes or costume - just
their outdoor clothes will help set the scene. Therefore children may wear casual
clothes that reflect the idea of outdoors / Early Australia for the day.
All parents and friends are most welcome to join with us for our assembly.
Footy Colours Day
Friday 26th September is our last day of school and also the day
before the AFL Grade Final. To celebrate we will have a Footy
Colours day. For the day children may wear their casual clothes
and if possible something to do with their favourite football team.
CENT NIGHT
Don’t forget the "Cent Night" fundraiser being held at the School Music Room on
Thursday 18th September. Bring a small gift or two (less than $5) to share!
The Parents and Friends look forward to seeing you all there! All friends and
family welcome.
Fire Safety Program
Ever two years Fireman Craig visits our school to conduct an excellent Fire Safety
Program. The program will run throughout the last week of this term.

Summer Uniform
As we have an early and warm spring this year we will therefore move into our summer
uniform just a little earlier. From next Monday, 15th September, children may wear
either their full winter or their full summer uniform. Children will be able to wear either
their full winter or full summer uniform for the last two weeks of this term and the first
week of Term Four, after that we will all move into summer uniform. Our NO HAT NO
PLAY policy will also commence on the second week of term four.
Sacramental Program Grade 3 to Grade 6 Students 2014
This will commence the week of 8th September. The programme will be taught in Gr
2/3, 3/4 and 5/6 with some work to be completed at home.
Fr John has advised us that the date for the West Coast parish to receive the sacraments
of Confirmation and Eucharist will be Saturday, 8th November at 6.00pm in Queenstown
at St Joseph’s Church.
The sacrament of Reconciliation will be made here in Rosebery prior to 8th November. Fr
John will advise the date later.
Any parent who wishes their child to take part in the Sacramental Program please
contact the school office.

International Literacy Day - 8th September, 2014
To celebrate International Literacy Day on Monday, 8th September, Grade 5/6 and 3/4 had a
visitor to our classroom. Her name was Sue Baker. Sue comes from Albany, Western Australia
and she is a grommet.
This year on of the shortlisted books from the Australian Book Council was a story titled “Granny
Grommet & Me”. This book tells the story of a little girl who goes surfing with a bunch of granny
grommets. The book was actually based on the group of grommets in Albany, that Sue surfs
with. (A grommet is the name given to someone who is learning to surf.) We thought it was
pretty cool for people over 50 learning to surf!
Sue also told us that she surfs every day with some other lady grommets. She had lots of funny
stories to tell us like, because she is short that she has to climb up on her boogie board. She has
also gone through some pretty scary times, like when she got caught in a rip. A rip is heaps of
water spinning around and it can pull you in. They are dangerous because you can drown. Sue
told us what to do if we ever do get caught in a rip which is good to know, with summer coming
on.
Mrs Bakers presentation really helped us understand why the book was written and what to look
out for when surfing and ..... we all now know what a grommet is.
Thank you Mrs Baker for sharing your story with us and giving us the opportunity to meet a real,
live granny grommet!
