It was an emotional win for

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
It’s starting to pop up here
and there, but one of the best
commercials promoting bowling is making the rounds on a
cable and satellite channel near
you. Reigning PBA Player of
the Year Jason Belmonte stars
in a 60-second ad for Bowlmor
AMF promoting the joys of
enjoying bowling on a Saturday
night. The ad starts with
Belmo introducing himself to
the camera with a group of
about 30 seated bleacher-style
behind him preaching and the
joys of heading out to your
local Bowlmor AMF center for
a night on the town. Pretty
ordinary so far, but here is
where the ad starts to really
engage the viewer.
Rather than throwing a ball
down any lane anywhere, the
first scene is of a couple eating
at what he calls a stuffy French
restaurant. The restaurant, appropriately named Chez Lame’,
is set up on a lane Belmo is
about to throw a ball down to
a full rack of pins. Cleverly, the
ball rolls between alternating
glasses of red wine and single
red roses, through the couple’s

table legs, then through a
miniature model of the famed
Parisian landmark, the Arc
de Triomphe, with Australian
flags emerging as the ball
passes underneath. Belmo
reacts by saying, “Crushes It!”
The next scenario unfolds in
a crowded bar. Rolling the ball
on the lane underneath bar
stools, once again, he carries
another strike, then the crowd
responds to Belmo putting his
hand to his ear, “Crushes It”!
The final scenario involves
a noisy club and you know
what’s going to happen. This
time, the ball rolls up the DJ
stand and over a huge speaker.
The crowd one final time yells
the hook phrase.
Overall, a very well-paced
ad, lots of things to attract our
attention, plenty of enthusiastic
people, so there’s more than
enough to hold our attention.
But some on social media
have already blasted the ad,
citing the timing shortly after
the Olympic announcement.
Another finger point was aimed
at slighting the league and
tournament bowlers.
Here’s the thing, it’s not for
us, the hard core league and
tournament players. This is
aimed directly at today’s young
20 and 30-something urban,
suburban, and rural hipsters.
Marketing anything to them is
not what it was 20 or 30 years
ago. Not even close. Bowling
is something their folks did
back when I was pin-chasing
on Friday and Saturday nights
in high school. It is something
that Bowlmor AMF knows
very, very well. They are working to get these young people
back into bowling centers they
swore off.
It’s not aimed at us.
Boutique bowling has been
around for almost 25 years.
Many 20-somethings have had
at least one birthday party
experience in a center. Here’s
a chance for them to see how
much fun the adult version is.
It’s not aimed at us.
With all too much other
stuff to do, see, and experience, marketing has to be that
much more aggressive for this

Finally this week, news
broke of current Boston Red
Sox center fielder Mookie Betts’
plans to bowl the PBA World
Series of Bowling in December.
Retired MLBers have rolled
tour events before, like Tom
Candiotti, but I can’t think of
any current major leaguers
since I believe John Burkett
rolled one of the ARC Pinole
stops around 1990 or so.
One great benefit we’ve
already seen is how the
mainstream has covered this
already. Numerous online
and print publications have
featured the story, as well as a
few broadcast outlets.
It was featured in a segment
last week Thursday on MLB
Network’s ‘Intentional Talk’
with Chris Rose and Kevin Millar. As before with a previous
segment in the spring about
John Burkett bowling the
PBA50 tour, Millar took time
this occasion to give viewers
another quick bowling lesson.
This time, he demonstrated

his own delivery style in his
uniquely Millaresque fashion.
He had a decent stance and
set up, then walked through
a three-step delivery. Granted,
Millar was in front of the
studio desk on a small elevated
platform, but actually showed
decent form. In the prior piece
on Burkett, Millar had said his
uncle and mom had bowled in
league before and then added
his league average awhile back
was around 200.
One thing not mentioned
often about some of the big
money contracts players in the
four major team sports sign is
what they can and cannot do
outside of their sport during
the length of the contract. Golf,
for example, is ok. Motocross
racing and bucking bronco
riding is probably not.
I’ve heard many teams
don’t want their players to put
themselves at risk for physical
injury or overuse. Back when
they were both Minnesota
Twins, Kent Hrbek and Tim
Laudner bowled league in
the off season, even venturing to the then-ABC Team
Championships. In the late
80’s, the Illinois State Bowling
Proprietors Association gave
Chicago Cubs reliever Mitch
Williams a lifetime pass to
bowl in their centers. But this
is a little different. OK, it’s a lot
different. But it’s a good kind
of different. The PBA World
Series of Bowling has many
bowlers with many different
occupations outside tour life.
Now one of them can say he’s
patrolled center field in Fenway
Park. Whether it’s MLB or PBA,
playing the show is playing the
show.

interviews throughout the
2015 baseball season, Betts
discussed his love for bowling,
and mentioned during one
interview that he would love
to participate in Chris Paul’s
annual CP3 PBA Celebrity
Invitational. Those discussions
led the PBA to contact Betts
and extend an invitation to
bowl in the World Series.
Betts is a former standout
youth bowler who averages
in the plus-200 range. He has
bowled a pair of certified
300 games and finished third
in the Tennessee Secondary
Schools Athletic Association
state championships individual
event as a junior at Nashville
Overton High School in 2010,
earning Tennessee Boys’
Bowler of the Year honors after
setting Tennessee high school
records with a 290 game and
827 series.
After winning his first
bowling tournament at age 8 –
a no-tap Thanksgiving turkey
shoot in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
– Betts won several other youth
tournaments, his mother Diana
Benedict noted.
Betts, who also excelled
as a basketball player, was
drafted by the Red Sox in the
fifth round (172nd pick) of the
2011 Major League Baseball
draft and signed with Boston,
rescinding his commitment to
the University of Tennessee. He
quickly rose through Boston’s
minor league system, earning a
promotion to the major leagues
in 2014 after reaching base
in a stunning 66 consecutive
regular season games in the
minor leagues. A second baseman at the time, he converted
to the outfield when he joined
the Red Sox in June 2014, and
has evolved into an everyday
outfielder with Boston during
the 2015 season.
After playing in 52 games
with Boston in 2014, Betts
played in his first full season in
2015, batting leadoff and posting a .291 batting average with
18 home runs, 77 runs batted
in, 92 runs scores and 21 stolen
bases in 145 games. During
his extraordinary season, he
became one of four players in
major league history to finish
a season with 40-plus doubles,
15-plus home runs and 20-plus
steals before the age of 23.
Betts, whose full name is
Markus Lynn Betts, is the son
of Diana Benedict and Willie
Betts, who intentionally gave
him a name that reduces to
the initials “MLB.” He got the
nickname, Mookie, from his
parents who were fans of NBA
star Mookie Blaylock.
Betts got his introduction to
bowling from his mother, an
avid bowler in the Nashville
area who also was his first
Little League Baseball coach.

weekend, then, having to bowl

Rash dropped a ball on his

Bluffs.
“Fortunately, all I had to do
was ice it down a lot so it got to
a point where it was feeling well
enough that I could bowl with
not much problem,” Rash added.

“He’s (Weber) one of the
best ever and if you want to be
considered one of the best you
have to beat the best,” said Rash,
whose last win came in the 2014

In the opening stepladder
match, PBA Tour rookie A.J.
Johnson of Oswego, Ill. defeated
three-time Tour winner Dick
Allen of Columbia, S.C., 231-209,

In the semifinal, Weber, trying for his 38th career title to tie

Johnson 213-187 to advance to

RED SOX STAR MOOKIE
BETTS CREATES IMMEDIATE
MEDIA IMPACT FOR PBA
WORLD SERIES
The news of Boston Red Sox
star Mookie Betts’ decision to
enter the GEICO PBA World

an immediate impact on news
media attention for WSOB VII.
Within minutes of the PBA’s
announcement, Boston Globe
Red Sox beat writer Peter Abraham tweeted the news, which
led to re-tweets and comments
on masslive.com, redsoxlive.
com and overthemonster.com,
among others.
Within hours, the news
spread to ESPN, Fox Sports,
the Providence Journal, New
York Daily News, Bangor

websites, social media outlets
and publications, including
many throughout the bowling
industry.
Immediately upon the close
of the major league season on
Sunday, Betts returned to his
Brentwood, Tenn., home and,
according to his mother Diana
Benedict, headed to the bowling center Tuesday morning to
begin preparations for WSOB
VII. Bowling – and Red Sox
fans – around the world will be
able to follow Betts’ throughout
his WSOB experiences by

will be his biggest test to date
that may prove him worthy of
this new Tour. Regardless, his
knowledge of the game makes
him one of the favorites.
Parker Bohn III – Parker’s
best finish in this event is 2nd.
Parker’s resurgence has been
boosted with his ease of mind.
Bohn has had questions about
his future with bowling and
his livelihood. Since Brunswick hired him, his bowling
has gotten better. He is like a
franchise football player just
signing his big contract. Now
that is out of the way, it’s time
to go out and kick some butt….
not fair to the Tour guys. I
asked Parker what else has
he done to keep up. He said,
“I have had some changes to
my span and dropped down to
15lbs. I have to keep up with
the young guns.”
Amleto Monacelli – When
it comes to smooth, Amleto
is the man. He epitomizes
getting better with age….we
are talking about bowling,
not looks. If looks help win
this event, he will be a big
favorite. Amleto has struck
gold winning titles on the PBA
50 Tour. Monacelli stays in
bowling shape competing on
the PBA 50 Tour. Not only is
he constantly bowling, he is
training bowlers in his home
country, Venezuela. Be on the
look-out for Amleto that week.
The fan base, mostly ladies,
will be by his side.
Norm Duke – Norm won
this event in 2011. Now, he
won this event on sheer will.
He was questioned whether
or not he would ever win this
event and it bothered him so
much, he went out and won
the damn thing. Duke is now
being questioned whether he
could ever win again on Tour.
Not a question you want to be
asking him when he bowls
best under the gun. He is the
best when he has a chip on
his shoulder. Norm is and
always will be a fan favorite. I
asked Norm his thoughts of the
event and format. “First and

New Schedule Part of Junior Gold
Championships Improvements
ARLINGTON, Texas – The
Junior Gold Championships
will expand its schedule by
a day in 2016, one of several
improvements that will provide
a better experience for both
competitors and attendees,
and to prepare for continued
growth of the event.
“As we started to see the
record participation in Junior
Gold last season, we put
together a targeted survey to
the bowlers themselves and
commissioned a task force
comprised of volunteer leaders, Junior Gold coordinators,
former bowlers and staff to lay
out “what’s next” for Junior
Gold,” said Chad Murphy,
United States Bowling Congress
Executive Director. “We are
really proud to see such great
response to the surveys and a
clear direction from the task
force to enhance the experience
and build toward a brighter
future for the sport through
this event.”
The 2016 Junior Gold
Championships presented by
Storm, Roto Grip and Master
will take place July 15-23 in
Indianapolis. Five bowling
centers will be used for competition: Western Bowl, Expo
Bowl, Woodland Bowl, All Star
Bowl and Southern Bowl.
The extra day of competition
allows for additional squads
with the TV finals for the event
on Saturday, July 23.
The competition will have
two practice days (July 1617) before qualifying for all
divisions – Under 12, Under
15 and Under 20 boys and
girls divisions – get underway.
Competitors then will bowl
four games each day over four
days for a total of 16 qualifying
games before the first cut is
made. Previously, the event had
15 games of qualifying over
three days for U15 and U20
divisions, and 12 qualifying
games for the U12 divisions.
The new schedule will allow
the tournament to have additional squads. This will mean
Anderson drums up 300/849,
Vannoy handles 694
fewer bowlers on each pair,
will make the centers more accessible for family and friends,
and will set up the tournament
for additional growth.
“The Junior Gold Championships has seen tremendous
growth and the improvements
that will take place in 2016 will
ensure youth bowlers and their
families will have an outstanding tournament experience,”
said Gary Brown, International
Bowling Campus Managing
Director of Youth Development. “Last year, a national TV
audience had the opportunity
to see what this event has to
offer and we expect to see the
Junior Gold program continue
to grow.”
During the 2014-2015 season, the Junior Gold program
shattered its all-time membership mark with more than
6,200 members and the 2015
Junior Gold Championships
saw more than 3,400 youth
bowlers qualify for the tournament. The 2014 tournament
drew just under 2,500 bowlers.
In addition to the new
schedule, bowlers will be
Walker 815, Aragon 300/801, Larue 300
Gary Anderson belted out a
chart-topping 300/849 series in
Denim & Duds action to head
the leader boards for the week at
Brunswick Zone Watauga.
David Walker and Leon
Aragon finished close behind
Anderson with award-winning
800 series. Walker from the High
Points group downed an 815
series while Aragon dropped a
300/801 Mix It Up series.
Wendy Vannoy fired a
thundering 277/694 series in
Senior Classic action to front
distaff scoring.
Matt Larue shared high-game
honors with Anderson and
Aragon with an award-winning
perfecto.

limited to five bowling balls
for competition, one less than
previously allowed. Junior Gold
is a stepping stone to collegiate
competition and the new rule
is meant to keep the event in
line with collegiate bowling,
which limits participants to
five balls in post-season play.
The event also has adopted the
collegiate dress code, allowing
females to wear skirts, skorts
and shorts.
The lane patterns for the
Junior Gold Championships,
which previously were released
during practice sessions, will
not be released until after
competition. The lane patterns
